P965 NEO & E6400 sudden reboot

Hello all!
I recently built a new system:
MSI P965 NEO
C2D E6400
Gigabyte GeForce 7900GT
2x 1Gb DDR2 Aeneon 667MHz CL5 5-5-5-15
Be Quiet! Blackline BQT P5 420W
320Mb SATA2 Seagate hd
Samsung Writemaster DVD-RW
The system started up and I installed Win XP Pro SP2 without any problems. Now the problem is it sometimes suddenly reboots without blue screen or any error messages. It happens most often when playing Oblivion but has happened while playing DVD's or using Opera as well. The CPU runs at stock speed and I've never tried to overclock it.
First I thought the CPU was overheating since the temps were high(ish), I use EVEREST to measure the temps since it shows core1 & core2 independently. At full load the core temps were close to 60 deg. C with the original Intel heatsink. I replaced the original heatsink with a Scythe Ninja Plus (a huge heatsink with a 120mm fan) , now it idles below 40 C and peaks at around 50 C when fully loaded. Unfortunately it didn't fix the rebooting problem.
Since updating the BIOS from 1.4 to 1.5 made a huge difference I'm starting to think it might be something mainboard related. With v1.5 the system has rebooted itself only a few times and only while playing Oblivion. I've run EVEREST's "System stability test" multiple times without problems.
Can anyone think of what's causing it and how I could make it more stable? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I've run Memtest86+ (the DOS version) and it passed several times without errors. I've also tried running the memory both 667MHz and 553MHz which made no difference. It does seem like a memory problem though so maybe I should try running the memories one stick at a time?

Anyway, have you
-installed chipset drivers
Do You mean the Intel INF drivers from MSI's website? I've installed all the latest drivers I could find.
Quote
-tried to increase the v-dimm by 0.1v or 0.15v
I'll give it a try. BTW the default setting in BIOS was 1.85V (I haven't touched it yet), I thought DDR2's normally run at 1.80V?
Quote
-tried other gfx drivers
I've tried Nvidia Forceware 91.31 and 91.33 beta. I'll try something older to see if it helps.
Quote
-disabled energy saving features in BIOS
Good point, I never even thought about that!

I have a MSI P965 Neo-F motherboard in my PC, everything works great except for one thing, rebooting.
When i reboot or reset, it shuts down the operating system/BIOS, after that the PC stays on but my screen stays black.
    Does anyone know a solution?
    Thank you,

i see the problem in mobo or revision of P965 itself ... there is many problems with restarts, reboots, first boot. It depend on version of BIOS you have, but i not found any version which solve this for me ...
i using v1.9 now ... and i have problem with boot after hybernation with vista..
after turning my computer off (in vista is normal to hybernate and shut down) i can boot my computer .. by its very strange. So, power comes up, but then instantly comes Windows Vista with logon screen - NO posting by BIOS, no RAID initial screen, no scaning for hardware... it comes instantly to windows - but windows are in some inconsistent state and i cant login (freeze/BSOD ... but pointer can be moved by mouse and login button shows efect if i move pointer over - so windows are in memory and working) ... in this state is HDD led all time ON (shining) ... i can shut down and boot up again and everything is OK (windows are normaly restored from disk)
with older v1.5 BIOS ... my computer goes to same state like is described here - BLANK ... and BIOS setting was reseted

  • PC freezes. (P965 Neo-f & Core 2 Duo E6400)

    Hello,
    I need some help.
My system became instable since I did a clean install.
It just freezes, especially when using heavier apps (within 5 min).
It is running winxp (Dutch version incl all win essential updates) and I used “live update 3” to get the latest drivers.
I did flash my bios (that wasn’t probably the smartest thing to do).
I already read some stuff on the forum (like the 1.9V my DDR2 need)…
and i installed “MSI Core Center” (system temp 35°, cpu temp 45°-50°).
But I didn’t discovered what my problem is.
Can anybody help me out please?
    Kind regards,
    Simon

    Hi,
yes i do get the green message about the dvd in green color after the memory check(MSI logo)
    somthing like ODD0 DVD RW
I will try the second option you recommended, thx alot.
Hello, welcome to forum. if you are planing to update BIOS:
get P965 Neo BIOS ver. 1.6 CD Image (have modded boot record and integrate JMB361 Dos drivers.)
    How do i flash it?
Extract image file from archive, and burn it to CD.(example: open it with nero burning rom and burn image file to CD)
Make and ensure PC is stable, then reboot PC and boot from CD. you will need to confirm twice BIOS update when asked.
after BIOS update is complete successfully, power down your PC, remove power cord from the PSU, hit few time power button to drain electrify from capacitors, touch some metal with hands to discharge any ES which you may have, then open the case and Clear CMOS then pull back power cord, and turn on your PC, will be notice CMOS CHEKSUM MISMATCH/ERROR, hit F1 to continue to rebuild DMI Pool Data, then reboot your PC, and enter in BIOS and LOAD BIOS DEFAULT, SAVE AND EXIT, go back to BIOS and apply your customs settings.
if you want to use USB key to flash BIOS, copy AWFL865.EXE & W7235IMS.160 to USB drive, reboot PC and boot from bootable location, (hold "SHIFT" key when starting loading from bootable device to bypass startup files to avoid loading memory managers and other applications) navigate to folder which containt flash program and BIOS file and type from there:
    AWFL865.EXE W7235IMS.160 /cks/sn/py/cc/cd/cp/wb/ld/qi/f/e

  • P965 Neo temp issues

Hi I'm really happy with my board, no problems yet Thankfully, also had a great installation, of windows vista RTM, and windows xp. But the rare issue i have is that my e6400 at stock, speed and with stock hsf, makes like 41c temp. this have been happening with the new 1.6 Bios release. any one have an idea why, and also my is always at low rpm, like 1300 or so, thanks.
and also, why Vcore voltage is so unstable, it move from 1.18 to 132v any ideas.??

I did some thermal throttling tests.
    E6400 @ 2.130mhz (stock)
    MSI P965 Neo-f (bios 1.6b13)
    Speedfan 4.32 Beta 8
Stresstest & Rightmark CPU clock utility from www.rightmark.com i think. if not that try google
At first I tried to set fan running at minimum speed. Well it was cooling too much and I could not hit over 67C.
So I obviously had to disconnect the CPU fan.
After that temperatures started to rise. At 83C thermal throttle started up. I dunno why the hell the threshold is so high, and I dunno if it can be changed with some program, didn't find any settings from rightmark cpu clock utility.
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/TM1.JPG
Picture 2 shows that temp readings are lost while cpu is throttling and stresstest is running. I guess this is because most CPU cycles are used for cooling CPU, not doing much work.
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/TM2.JPG
Well I continued this for a while, what a heck this box has still warranty left
Picture 3 shows that thermal throttle is able to keep Core temps about 82C without fan running. Obviously stresstest + thermal throttle was reason for losing CPU temp readings, as seen in picture 3 temp readings came back after stopping stresstest.
    http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/TM3.JPG
I killed the stresstest, but left CPU fan disconnected. I can again see the temperatures. Its 82C.
At this point my computer still works without any problems.
Well I connect my CPU fan back. And temps starts to decrease fast, after going below 80C thermal throttle was disabled. It "saved" my CPU. BUT!
Now I get report from windows that my RAID1 device is broken, one of the HDD's goes missing.  HMMMM?. (to note im running temporarily software RAID1 on Jmicron connected IDE hdds).
Well I decide to reboot my computer, Windows shutdowns normally. At post first everything seems ok, my SCSI card finds both my HDDs etc etc. Then comes Jmicron's turn to find HDDs, it just freezes there. Hmm interesting, did I broke my mobo??
I try reset button, again same thing.. $hit !!!.
I shutdown the computer, and turn on again and everything works again. OMG
So before someone tells how to set different threshold for cpu throttling it might work, but at least my p965 neo-f doesnt like it. My guess is that the North Bridge is overheating as there is almost no airflow there, without cpu fan running. (There would be airflow from my computer case coolers, but I did it case open, and my fans are attached to the opening side panel, so the werent blowing in the case atm).
But atleast 70-80C should be safe temps for the cpu.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) problem booting from USB flash drive

    Hi, all!
I was wondering if someone can help me. I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my 320GB HDD that is connected to my MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) mobo (The CPU is a Core2Duo 6600 with 6GB of RAM). I created a bootable USB 8GB flash drive using Microsoft's "Windows 7 DVD USB Download Tool" and bootsect.exe (Needed to create a boot sector on the USB drive) from the MS store. I successfully tested the resulting bootable USB drive using freeware MobaLiveCD (Sorry, you'll have to Google "mobalivecd" since this forum doesn't seem to allow external links) running under Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit). Under MobaLive's QEMU, Windows 7 setup loaded its files and produced an error message basically saying that it could not install Windows 7 x64 under an x86 OS (No surprise there since QEMU is emulating a 32bit processor - The point is that the bootable USB drive I created works).
I then went into my mobo's CMOS and under Advanced BIOS Features -> Boot Sequence -> 1st Boot Device, set the value to "USB-HDD" and rebooted my machine. The USB drive probably was not detected by the mobo under that setting because it proceeded to boot from my HDD which is the 2nd Boot Device. I repeated the same process using each one of the  four USB ports in the rear of the mobo (I don't have the optional USB panel that the MSI users manual mentions) to no avail. I also tried setting the 1st Boot Device to "USB-FDD" and repeated the process for each USB port but the mobo still will not boot from the USB drive (It does not recognize it). When I set the 1st Boot Device to "USB-ZIP" and rebooted, the mobo hangs after "Verifying DMI Pool Data ..." which is no surprise since I am not using a USB ZIP drive but a USB flash drive. It appears that under that setting, it recognizes that there is a USB device attached but it is expecting a response (From a USB ZIP drive). I had no idea it would be this frustrating to boot from a USB flash drive! If anyone knows how to make this mobo boot from a USB flash drive, please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P965 Neo motherboard is 8 years old, so don't expect miracles. .... You need to format the USB stick in the proper way. You may use this utility to do it: hxxp://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ Also, it's a good idea to use the first (USB0) connector (controlled by Intel ICH8) for the USB flash drive. Good luck.
Thank You for your fast response, RemusM!
I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm just looking for a mobo that does what it is supposed to do: Allow me to boot from a USB flash drive (I don't think that is too much to ask for even from a board that was made in 2006)!
Thanks for recommending FlashBoot. I see under their "Why FlashBoot" section that it "... does not shift to user the burden of choice between "USB-ZIP" and "USB-HDD" at format time and proper BIOS setup at boot time. ... and every USB disk is formatted in such way that it will work in every environment properly, regardless of current BIOS setting.", so I will give it a try and let you know about the results afterwards.

    My Problem
Immediately after installation, my will have lots of citrical errors and many times, the monitor just went blank and PC restart.
    What I have done:
Updated BIOS to 1.6. THE SAME PROBLEM.
I suspect that it was the RAM, so using only 1x 512MB RAM, that system was Stable. (For Both my RAM – thus, RAM was good)
That makes me suspect that the MOBO. So I place Both the RAM from DIMM Slot 1 & 3 to Slot 2 & 4. The System was Stable.
Back to Slot 1 & 3, THE SAME PROBLEM.
To me, confirmed MOBO faulty and went to change the MOBO.
With the NEW MOBO (same model), THE SAME PROBLEM.
Now I am running my System with RAM in Slot 2 & 4 for 1 week and the System is Stable.
Can someone advise me what the problem? What if in the future I need to add more RAM?
    Thanks

increase your ddr voltage, run memtest86+ and correct all memory errors.
list your power supply specs from label on psu.

  • MSI P965 Neo board failure ?

I have the P965 Neo board running perfect for two years, for a few weeks ago the system didn't startup, a long beep sound came from the MB. I opened the case, checked connectors etc. and replaced the memory modules. After that the system runs ok, no problem occurs for almost three weeks.
For a few days ago, out of the blue,  the system didn't startup: error message: "WARNING Have option ROM can not be invoke (Vendor ID: 10Ech, Device ID:8167h)"
I reset the system and it passes the POST, the WINDOWS XP splash screen shows up but after a few seconds the blue progress bar stops.
I reset the system again and now the WINDOWS XP splash screen stays fade out, no progress bar
I reset the system several times, after a few times the system normally boots up and is ok.
I tested the HD with Speedfan Smart utility and it is found ok.  Also no virus etc is found. I checked the device manager, no driver problems.
Yesterday the system had the same problems (XP boot blue progress bar stops, sometimes the progress is very slow) but after a few restarts the system boots normal and is ok.
Tonight, after I had opened the case to measure the voltages, I startup the system but no problem occurs. The 12V and 5V are ok
I think I have a hardware problem but I'm doubt what hardware (MB,RAM,PSU,processor) causing this kind of problems.
    Can you help me ?

Clear CMOS and try booting the system again.
Was the system like this from Day 1 or this only happens after something has been done?
    Thks NovJoe ....
The system had run without any problem for more than 2 years.
I presume I have a connection problem on the MOBO or other hardware. If I place the PC case in the cabinet under my desk, the problem occurs. If I have the PC on the floor there is not any problem. It also happens only when the PC is cold.
I asked my hardware supplier, he suggested to test the hardware with a special self booting hardware test CD. It will cost 40 euro. I searched for such a CD on internet but didn't find one special for MSI boards. Do you know where I can get such a CD ?

  • P965 Neo with Conroe6400

    Hi,
I'm having some stability problems with my new system :
    P965 Neo
    Core 2 Duo 6400
    2 x 1Gb OCZ PC2 5400 (4-4-4-8)
    Bios v1.5
    IDE 160 Gb H.D.
Some applications keep crashing (with hexadecimal errors (memory)). I've tried to run the Mem86 test but it crashes somewhere in the middle of the test (my PC just reboots).
    What can I do ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your help,
The problem was the memory voltage but it wasn't because it wasn't high enough. After verification on OCZ website, I realized that the voltage for my RAM was 1.8V instead of 1.85.
    It's now fully functionnal.
    Thanks.

  • Would the P965 Neo-F make a good board in a student PC?

These are the components I had in mind for my sister's new PC:
    Core 2 Duo E6300
    MSI P965 Neo-F
    2x1GB Kingston HyperX KHX6000D2K2 DDR2-750
    Asus 7600GS passively cooled
    430W Seasonic S12-430
    Samsung 80GB HDD SATA
    Samsung DVD Burner SATA
    BenQ FP93VW
    MS-Tech Midi Tower
She does game a little (Caesar 4 too, so the gfx must have a little juice), but mostly DVD watching, surfing the net, work stuff, encoding to MP3 and so on. Would the Neo-F be worth the extra money compared to the 50€ AsRock solutions?
Edit: Important question: Does the Neo have any other significant problems then with IDE optical drives? Since both the HDD and DVD Burner are SATA I dont expect any problems on this side.

Quote from: Streifenkarl on 28-December-06, 14:47:38
Thanks for your input guys. I think I'll stay with the Neo then!  Which BIOS version should I use then? 1.5 or an earlier one for highest stability?
Use 1.5 if it works right. Seems BIOS has some issues as beta's are released quite often. That Asrock board wouln't be bad, if you get piece that isn't defect. My Asrock's AGP port was faulty which resulted burned GFX. If you are not using external (PCI/PCIe) hdd controllers you should not hit any problems with this board. I would not suggest flashing beta biosses if you dont have problems.
Jmicron controller might cause some problems, but they are fixable trought newest drivers I have heard. I am currently running some old beta driver with my 965 neo, as I have been too lazy to update to newest as they seem to work enought. I dont use much IDE drives anyway, only my raid1 backup set is IDE, other stuff is SCSI, which are bit problematic with this board.
2x 12v lines aren't good If you are using some heavy gfx card, if the rails aren't real powerfull. There was some nice postings on these forums about them. I would prefer PSU with really heavyduty one 12v rail. But if it works, dont do anything ofc.
Your set is almost like mine, tho I have e6400 and kingston valueram. Im not sure if the mobo keeps RAM at specified speed as I havent found any software that could see the ram clock. Well I can run 325 fsb stable with default voltage, so if the ram clock is not fixed to 333 my KVRs are just good pieces
Nice to see atlast powerfull cpu that can be cooled even with stock cooler when overclocked, tho I already installed my watercooling as all parts of my computer seems to work.

  • MSI p965 NEO boot problems

    Hello everyone.
My DVD-rom is installed in IDE, and i have sata HD. My boot device is CD-rom.
OK, so my problem is that i puit windows XP cd in my dvdrom, because i want to install XP. Ok, so firstly my dvd doesnt show up on the IDE listing, they are all 'None', i press F1 to continue, my other option is DELITE to enter bios. Ok, so i get to a screen where my HD shows up, and also my DVD, then i get the option to enter the realtek setup hablahabla shift+f10, and this i dont need. Then i get to another screen it shows all these different things but ends with "Verifying DMI pool data ....." and then i get the msg ITLDR is missing, and i get the option to press CTRL alt delete to reboot.
So plz, how do i fix so that i can fornmate my hd and install windows XP?
    thanks //eric karlsson

fendic thanks for your input, its given me some progress i hope.
I did connect it to one of the four ones, not the 1 in other color. Now, this made my HD show up as IDE Secondary Master. Instead of the previous "none", the rest of the IDE on start are still "None". As for my "DVD-ROM", after ive pressed F1 during the first screen, i get on the second one saying 0DD0: Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A, in green text, which is my DVD-ROM. Now, i think the issue for some reason is that even though i have CDROM as first boot device it still trys to boot it from HD. because when i unplug my HD i can boot XP using my windows XP CD in my DVD ROM. Also, my BiOS is 1.5, im not sure how to flash bios using a floppy or whatever, but i will look into it and ill post if i ever succsed to make my bios 1.6. Oh, and yes im using a SATA HD.
    Thanks
    Eric Karlsson
EDIT; I flashed bios to 1.6 now, but the problem still remains im affraid.  Iv bin doing some lurking about and i cant let go off 1 thing, and its "enable JMicron as IDE". Since my DVD-rom shows in green text druing the JMicron screen.
EDIT2; This is how i flashed, its from a post on tgis forum. I had to unplug my HD to make it boot from the CD-ROM. But after puting the HD back on, it still does not work.
"Hello, welcome to forum. if you are planing to update BIOS:

Check the bold part in the qotation, thats the drivers for JMicron i think, still there is no succses for me.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F + DDRII 800 TwinX (2x512mb) issue

Hi, ive recently built a new system a couple of days ago and im having a few issues with it... i 'presume' it may have something to do with ram/mobo compatability.
    Heres my system, no oc'ing:
    MSI P965 Neo-F
    1Gb (2X512Mb) Corsair TwinX DDR2 PC6400 (800) @ 5-5-5-18 1.85V (mobo default)
    480W power supply
The issue seems to be that during boot up the system loads into windows XP then after about 20-30 secs the system will reboot itself for no reason (no event log), then it kinda has a set of mini reboot fits during POST.
After the system has settled down it will boot into windows XP fine and i have no further issues at all... it runs all my games/apps perfectly.
Can anyone shed any more light on this issue ?

first, stop the board from auto-rebooting, by going to Control Panel , System Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, uncheck "Automatically restart". See what the bluescreen error code is. That would help a bit.

    I would like to replace a Core2 4300 by a Core2 Duo E7400 (Freq 2.8Ghz, Core 45nm, FSB 1066Mhz, L2 Cache 3Mb, PCG 06, SLB9Y)
On the website, it seems hat these proc. are not supported

    Thanks for any information

Precisely, 45nm CPUs, FSB-333-MHZs-Processors and Quad Core Processors are not supported on this mainboard.
If you are thinking about a CPU Upgrade, the best processors you can upgrade to would be one of the E6x00 Series (E6300, E6400, E6600, E6700, X6800).

  • P965 Neo and Corsair XMS2 DIMM kit 1024MB PC2-5300U CL4-4-4-12 (DDR2-667

I have a nasty compatibility issue with my P965 Neo board in combination with Corsair DDR2 memory.
    Hardware config:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 2x2.13GHz, 266MHz FSB
    MSI P965 Neo-F (7235 PCB-V1.1) BIOS V1.50
    Corsair XMS2 DIMM kit 1024MB (2x512MB) PC2-5300U CL4-4-4-12 (DDR2-667) XMS5402v5.7
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 16MB SATA II
    Asus Extreme N7600GS SILENT/HTD, GeForce 7600 GS, 256MB, DVI, TV-out, PCIe
Using the Corsair memory at 667MHz (BIOS: auto by SPD) results in an unstable system and a lot of memory errors (checked by memtest86+). If I set the frequency to 533MHz the system is 100% stable.
Anyone else who encountered this problem? I have also tried to use only 1 DIMM for single channel mode, same problem.
Will this issue be fixed in the upcoming BIOS release?
    cheers,

Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR2 voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
    @winkel111
strange there are no corsair 5300 only 5400 ?
and cm2x512-5400c4 needs 2.0v but cm2x512-5400c4pro only 1.9v ! so maybe it has nothing to say that my 5400c4pro are perfect ?
how good are the samsungs ?
