hi. i have problem vith my motherboard( p965 neo-f v2) i cant instal win7. always rebooting when instal. 3 days im trying to make this work. any help?

If it's rebooting randomly then it's most likely the RAM, data corruption or power supply issues.
It's never a good idea to mix RAM modules by the way. Try with just ONE stick in DIMM1 (slot closest to the CPU). Also, still check there's no problems with the RAM module with >>Memtest86<<.
Run diagnostic tests on the hard drive to check it's not the cause of the problem and try a different lead.
Another possibility is that your power supply is faulty. Try and borrow one of greater power (more amps on the +12v rail) and see if that changes anything.

I have a PowerBook G4 12" (ppc) and I want to see if I can get it back up and running. The problem is that the internal optical drive and the hdd are both broken. I would like to create an installer on usb and deploy a working osx installation to a flash drive. I know this is officially supported with osx on intel based machines but not ppc. However, the hack in the article above shows a way that you can run osx from a usb flash drive. My father has a MacBook Air so I can get access to Disk Utility and Pacifist but before I try it I think I might get stuck at the point where you have to copy SetupAssistant, BaseSystem.pkg and Essentials.pkg from the hdd of your working copy of osx (remember I don't have one because the hdd is broken). Either the versions of these files on his machine (10.8) will be different from my 10.6, or they won't exist. Is there a way that I can extract them from the disk or get them from the net.
I know what you're thinking, (just get a new machine already). But I'm really interested in tech and thought it would be nice if I could bodge a solution to this problem together.
Also, this hdd is the second hdd now and I only installed it 2 months ago. The machine is 9 years old. My friend in irc said that it could be a fault somewhere else that caused the incredibly short life span of the new hdd.
I realize this is a wild stab in the dark but I also thought about being able to create and installer for Ubuntu and deploying a working installation of that OS to this machine.
Of course I am only doing this as a matter of interest. It is not because I am too poor to buy a new laptop.

How do I install and BOOT Windows 7 on External Hard Drive?

Please please please help! I've been browsing the net for 2 days straight and can't find a decent answer.
I've partitioned my external hard drive (Western Digital Passport) using Disk Utility.
I have 4 paritions in total; 2 intended for Mac and 2 intended for Windows.
I used a GUID partition table for all 4 as displayed on the below picture.
Although I should note that when my external hard disk is booted in Windows it says that it uses Master Boot Record, please see picture 2 below.
I formatted the Mac Partitions to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the Windows Partitions to ExFat.
The Macs work beautifully; having successfully installed and booted Snow Leopard on them, and then backed up my 2 internal Mac Drives to them.
However, the Windows ones are a complete nightmare and I have no idea how to installl Windows 7 and then use them from there.
Can anyone offer a solution? I've heard so many conflicting ideas about this that it's made me dizzy just reading it all.

Yeah, I use Windows on bootcamp for both my Imac and my Macbook Pro.
In fact, seeing as my Mac partition on my external hard drive was successful i.e. I installed and can boot from them any time I like, couldn't I just use the external hard drive's partitions' bootcamp assistant and install/boot windows on there?

How to Install and boot-up New Blank Hard Drive

I am looking to install a new hard drive on my 2007 MBP C2D. I currently have a stock 200GB 5400rpm Toshiba hard drive installed and I am looking to upgrade. I was looking at a Seagate momentus 320GB 7200rpm SATA or a Western Digital 500GB 5400rpm SATA. Would I have any problems with either of these drives, and would I see significant improvement in performance if I went with the 7200rpm drive?
I was also looking to start fresh with the new drive, only copying and pasting some files from my old drive to the new one. I would do this by first copying the files I want from my old drive to an external, and then copy them to my new drive once it is installed. My questions are do I need to format the new drive? How do I install Leopard? Would I simply put the DVD into the disk drive and install it from there? I've read about partitioning issues and other installation problems; will I have to deal with these by installing it this way?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

All of my external hard drives are Western digital. I am pretty sure that they can only be formatted in FAT32, is that going to be a problem if I decide to clone my current hard drive?
FAT32 is not Mac OS X bootable. If you must have PC readable hard drive that is Mac bootable, get http://www.mediafour.com/macdrive
That will allow your PC to read your Mac drive.

You can still maintain the Mac booting by formatting your drive HFS+, and the PC will still be able to share files with your Mac.
Regardless you can't clone a Mac OS X bootable drive to a FAT32 formatted drive. And there is no such thing as a hard drive that can't be formatted HFS+. They may come initially formatted FAT32, but Apple's Disk Utility can reformat them.
I don't know what restrictions exist in event you run Boot Camp though. For that you'd have to ask in the Boot Camp forum:

Would a 7200rpm drive show significant performance advantages over a 5400rpm drive?
If the drives are of equal capacity yes. Larger capacity but slower drives actually are the nearly the same speed as the faster drives of smaller capacity. I.e. a 120 GB 7200 RPM drive is going to be of equivalent speed to a 160 GB 5400 RPM drive.
Also, the one reason why I want to start fresh is because my computer sometimes runs slow, which it never did in the first few months that I had it.

A 10 GB free hard drive sounds like it lacks the necessary empty capacity to run smoothly.
Cleaning the space as suggested earlier may be an easier approach than trying to install a new drive.

I need to install and boot to OS 9 to update firmware

I have purchased my first Mac (yahoo!!)The Mac is a G4 model M5183, so far I have purchased OS 9 retail cd, Jaguar 10.2 retail, The mac came with jag already installed and that is why i cannot update the firmware. The retail os 9 will not start up when restarting and holding down the C key on the keyboard. I have since installed a second HDrive, so i have a 20 gig with Jag, slave drive split with 2 partitions 10 gig each. formated extended with os drivers ticked. 2gig of ram, 3.4f1 firmware, 10.2.8 , (6R73) I want to run os 9 on the slave drive and x on the other , i am asuming that i will have some way of choosing witch os to boot into ?
I hope somebody can help caus i am getting nowhere with this (help please..)

The model designation M5183 is a rather generic one, and is not precise - it indicates a form factor used by more than one model G4, such as the G4 (AGP) and the G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) models. This Apple Kbase article can help you determine the exact model by noting the arrangement of ports and connectors on the back -

It's important to know that, since some G4s can use any retail OS 9 Install CD while others are more limited in that they can not use early versions of OS 9.
What is the version of OS 9 on the retail OS 9 Install CD?

Did you perhaps mean "OS 9 drivers ticked"? If so, that's good, because without them no OS 9 can see the volume.

Yes, a couple of ways.
• With the two OS's (OSX and OS 9) on separate volumes, you can use Startup Manager during booting to pick which OS you want to use for booting -

The picture in that article is for newer Intel Macs. On your older machine the screen display will be slightly different. Once Startup Manager has loaded, click the icon representing the volume you want to use for booting, then click the straight arrow on the right.
• You can also use Startup Disk (in Apple menu >> System Preferences in OSX, in Apple menu >> Control Pnaels in OS 9) to do that. This sets the OS to be used for the next boot, such as after a restart.
Note - OS 9 versions earlier than OS 9.2.1 may not contain a Startup Disk control panel coded to recognize OSX as a valid OS, which can present a problem in getting back to booting to OSX. The solution is to update just that control panel; there's a specific download just for that -

Random Freezing and booting problems

My MBP (4 years old) randomly freezes and the only button works is the power button. It has booting problems as well
Done already
clean install of snow leopard
PRAM reset
Safe Boot (boots again after using safe boot but still freezes after a couple of minutes)
AHT hardware test with no result
Still freezes after 1 to 15 minutes.
Anything else I cab do?

Wow my first time i use this forum and a fast reply.
Unfortunately not at home at the moment so can not give exact answers.
When my mac book freezes the fan still works, keyboard and touch pad do not work anymore. I don't think caps lock light works but not sure.
Have original ram and a retail SL disc.
When I have booting problems I can see the spinning wheel and after that only blue screen. If I power off and start in safe mode and then restart again mbp will boot again for 2,3 or 4 times and then stop booting again but still freezing after a couple of minutes.
The funny thing with the booting is after I see the blue screen I can still connect from my mac mini and browse my MBP from my mac mini.(screen sharing does not work though).
And do not know what smart status is

Neo Platinum XP install on RAID problems

Hi, this is my first post on these boards so I'm hoping someone will be able to help.
I'm building a new system using:
Neo Platinum Mobo
Twin WD Raptor SATA drives
This is the problem:
I have installed the two Raptors on SATA ports 3 & 4 and enabled these in BIOS. I have also enabled 3 & 4 as RAID and set up a striped array. I have then proceeded to install Windows XP (standard, no service pack). Past the F6 driver setups without problem but then after a short while a blue screen appears saying that windows has encountered problems and is shutting down to avoid damaging the system. This message also mentions viruses or badly terminated drives.
I have tried several times but this window always appears.
I was able to install xp without problems on one of the SATA drives once I had disabled the RAID array but obviously I want to be able to make use of RAID.
I have checked and double checked all connections etc and all seems fine. getting desperate here and would really appreciate some guidence.

A couple of points to add to all that:
1. How about the rest of the specs of your system, especially the PSU specs (max amps on each rail).
2. Are they 74GBRaptors or 36GB? If 74GB you should slipstream SP1a or SP2 into your Win XP first because the combined capacity will be greater than the OS can recognise. There are lots of sites with instructions for this. My favourite is here (Nero 6 version). You can also look at XPCREATE.
3. The original XP did not support UDMA6 and I wonder if that may be another reason for your problems. It shouldn't make any difference but then problems are often caused by things that shouldn't really matter.
I would certainly suggest you install from a CD with SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed.

Installing AND Uninstalling problems

My problem started when I was trying to install one of the CS4 premiums. When I was going through and selecting everything I wanted to install, Photoshop CS4 Extended would not select. I clicked a little drop down arrow that said that the reason is because it is already installed. This is not my problem...
I thought it was weird because I had never, ever before had any version Photoshop installed on this computer. But I opted to simply install and then uninstall a Photoshop CS4 Extended trial to see if that would help. After downloading a hefty installer file, I attempted to install it. At the end of the installation I received the following error:

Crap. But I decided to try to uninstall it anyway. At the end of the uninstallation it says that there were some errors uninstalling some of the components. "For more information see below." And then there's nothing below. What.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it several times. What the Christ, guys? Am I forever doomed to have an incomplete, non-working Photoshop on my computer? Is there any way I can simply delete all the files and remove it from the registry?

Windows Keboard and Booting Problem (on a Mac laptop)

Hi, I've been putting up with a really strange (and annoying) problem that my laptop has been going through. I have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro with OS Leopard, and I put on a Windows XP Pro (with Service Pack 2) NTFS partition. It used to work fast at first--especially booting up and logging on. I have noticed that now when I log onto Windows (no other user accounts , just mine) the wallpaper, desktop, desktop icons, start bar, all load. But when I click on My Computer it takes a good minute and a half for all the components to be displayed (like C drive , the CD drive, Shared Documents). I only have one partition which is C drive. But for a minute and a half, the flashlight icon keeps moving back and forth. Even if I click on any icon, the cursor will turn into a sandtimer but no programs will open once all the drives show up in the My Computer window.
My initial theory was that maybe it's searching for My Documents which I shifted to one of my external harddrives. But that doesn;t seem to be it. When I log off and log back in, it loads much faster. I can open programs in 2 seconds. Also, I realized that the Apple keyboard features (which is controlling volume and brightness) works only then. If I had to boot up Windows, not only does it take long to load (although shutting down is pretty quick), the brightness and volume keys don't work. I have to set it manually through Control Panel. So now if I have to open up Windows, the ritual is that I sit around for a minute and a half (which is a very long time if u think about it) and just when it's working I force myself to log off (so the volume and brightness keys work once I log back on)
I suppose it's worth mentioning that I had downloaded this "skin" which makes XP look like Vista, but I uninstalled it now although not completely since it needed the Service Pack 2 CD which I don't have at the moment (I'm on vacation) . I would think that could be the problem, but then why does simply logging off and on make Windows work like a charm? Is it an update glitch? Has anyone had this problem before? Could somebody please help me since I'm really tired of waiting around or this stupid thing to load (not to mention hearing myself come up with stupid theories). This has been going on for 4 and half months now. Come to think of it it's been a while since I received any Bootcamp updates from Apple (unless they just haven't released any that could fix such a problem)
Just in case my specs are-- 2.4 GhZ, OS 10.5, nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, 15 inch display, 250 GB (of which 30 GB is for Windows).
I'll be waiting for any answers/suggestions/tips/solutions. Thanks so much in advance =)

SOA Suite 11g HA install and EDNDataSource problem

We are encountering constant XA and DBLocker related errors with the EDNDataSource:

These errors occur every couple of seconds on both SOA hosts. Additionally, we see errors on one of the hosts, complaining about EDNDataSource not being clusterable:

We have ensured that the database (we are using a single Oracle 11g database instance, not RAC) has XA support enabled. Beyond this, we haven't found any leads on this forum nor the Oracle support site (we have opened an SR with Oracle). I've seen a couple of other threads related to this issue over the last year (e.g., Re: JTA - XA Rources - Rollbacks reason and What is the purpose of EDNDataSource in SOA 11g? but no resolution was ever posted.
Does anyone have any suggestions of where to being looking to troubleshoot this issue? Any help would be most appreciated!

How are you starting the server? Using start script - ./startManagedWebLogic.sh soa_server1? Make sure that classpath is getting set properly.Yes, after using the script to start the admin server.
How do I make sure the classpath is getting set properly? Seems to be the actual problem, but from the logs when the server starts up the command seems correct from what I can see. If I knew which jars contained the classes it needed I could try and look for them in the start command.
11g is not certified on Ubuntu. Please refer below link for certification matrix -I actually wished Oracle could certify the installers for Mac OSX (just for development), but I guess I could try and get things up on Redhat instead. :P

MSI P965 Neo-F Sata & IDE presentation (& boot options)

I have purchased a MSI P965 Neo F motherboard.

I have flashed the bios to the lastest 1.18 revision.
If you look at this board, you'll find it has 5 SATA ports.
- 1 SATAII port by JMicron JMB361.
- 4 SATAII ports by ICH8.
Questions:
1.) The machine only appears to be able to boot from the 1 jmicron sata port.
2.) within the bios any disks plugged into the board on the other 4 ports show up as "ide" disks, this could be wording or this could be some cheap bus trick

I've got an info from one of MSI Engineers for the DDR 800MHz RAMs support for MSI P965 Neo-F mainboard.
There'll be a BIOS v1.40 that enables the mainboard to support 1GB DDR 800MHz modules.
Another upcoming BIOS v1.50 will fixed the 2GB limitation on the board, allowing the board to run up to 4GB of DDR 800MHz RAMs.
I'll update this thread on any upcoming details that I can get.
I can't confirm when the BIOS will be officially released so please kindly have the patience to wait.

Mac Pro 2008 Memory Overheating and Boot Problems!

I have a mac pro early 2008 8core 2.8ghz with 20gb ram and I have 2 very frustrating problems
1. The Mac Pro has trouble booting, every time I power on the mac pro it makes the boot noise then shuts down, I have to press the ON button at least 5 or 6 times for it to regularly boot, I have replaced the hard drive to an SSD recently to fix the problem but it stills persists. I don't know if its the riser card, the GPU or the logic board thats faulty but its driving me crazy!
2. My Memory is overheating! again I don't know whether its my memory or the riser cards, I recently purchased an extra 16gb of ram, so I'm super confused, is this mac pro dying, because i really don't want it too! please help me out!!

I have not received an answer to the question and the meaning of said specs remains unclear to me. Nevertheless, I installed the memory and have been running it without problems for about a month now.

Can't install arch, boot problem?

I thought that I give Arch a go on my desktop computer after checking that everything works under linux (using ubuntu-live-cd).
So I downloaded the 64bit netinstall .iso and burned it to a disc. And when I tried to boot the disc I came to a grub prompt. So I thought that something could be wrong with my systemdisk (previously used in raid0 as systemdisk for windows). So I booted the ubuntu-live-cd once again and installed it on the hard drive without any problems. And I put the arch disc back in and tried to boot, but I came to the grub prompt once again. I found a older release (2009.2 64 netinstall) that I've used on my laptop before, so I know that the CD is good. But I came to the grub prompt once again. So then I took the 2009.8 disc and tried to boot my fathers computer with it, and it worked.
Then I thought I'd give USB-install a go. So I downloaded the 2009.8 64bit netinstall .img file and put it on a USB-drive using unetbootin in ubuntu. I booted the USB-drive and I came to the blue grub windows, then I selected to install archlinux with sata. The info about the kernel comes up, and then it just freezes. So I've come as far as booting the installer, but it freezes right away. I've also tried the 2009.8 64 core .img in case the netinstall was missing some important files.
I've tried to remove my usb-dac & soundcard if they conflict in some way, but without success. I've tried to remove all but one memorystick without any luck. Everything but my nic on my motherboard is disabled. Sata is set to ACHI in bios.

Processor: Intel e8400
Memory: 4x2gb Mushkin Redline
Graphic card: Nvidia 9400gt
Soundcard: ESI Maya 44
USB-Dac: Red Wine Audio Isabellina HPA
Motherboard: ASUS p5e deluxe (x48 chipsed, marvell nic, IHC 9 sata-controller)
Hard drive: Corsair p64 SSD
I can't understand why it won't boot properly when both Ubuntu and OpenSolaris boots just fine from live-cd. The hard drive and the dvd reader are the only sata things that are plugged in.

Grub is known to make problems on some systems, when used as to boot from CD. You could try using the alternate ISO with the isolinux bootloader. You can find it on your favorite mirror as archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-x86_64-isolinux.iso
