P965 Platinum and E6700 CPU Core v ?

Just a question.
What is the default CPU Core V on the P965 Platinum board when you just unpack it first time ?
I just want to know because i just installed my board directly with my new E6700 CPU on without checking the CPU core v first.
I never touched it, but i'm afraid its wrong. Maybe i have to chance it my self for the right setting.
So my question is really. Is the default CPU core v on the P965 Platinum alright for a Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU or should it be chanced
to the CPU the user are using with the board.
Thx

1.265V for mine...

  • MSI P965 Platinum with E6700 - what ram (Mem) ?

    Hi.
    I have a P965 Platinum board with a Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU on and 2x 512MB Kingston PC2-5300 Dual channel 667 mem.
But i can see the board support PC2-6400 Dual channel 800Mhz mem also. That would be better than the 667Mhz PC2-5300 mem, right ? maybe a stupid question, but i'm preatty new to PC.
And if yes. witch 1GB Dual channel PC2-6400 would be good for this board together with the DC2 cpu.
    i was thinking of these :  OCZ Gold GX XTC Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 5-5-5-12 - or OCZ Platinum XTC Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 4-5-4-15 - or OCZ Special Ops Edition Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 5-5-5-12 -
Tell me witch of these best suit my system..
    Thx again..

  • P965 Platinum and E6600 won't go to 3GHz

    Hello,
I have a MSI P965 Platinum and a E6600. Currently I have two sticks of Corsair Value Select 1GB PC-5300 RAM, rated at 667Mhz 5-5-5-15.
The E6600's stock is 2.4GHz, and I want to go to 3GHz. This should be dead simple - not only can the E6600 usually clock much higher, but 3GHz will only require a 333Mhz FSB (9 x 333), which means my RAM doesn't have to be overclocked at all since it is rated for 667MHz DDR2. I should be able to obtain 3GHz with a nice comfortable 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio without stressing the Corsair Value ram beyond specifications.
However, it just won't work. I seem to be having RAM instabilities at 667MHz 5-5-5-15 and 333Mhz FSB. The reason I say RAM is because Memtest86 freezes, and SuperPi has a 'not exact in round' error in 16M and 32M - which apparently means there is a problem with memory stability. Now, I know this sounds like the RAM is faulty, but I don't think it is, because when I run stock 266MHz FSB, the system is fine at 4:5 divider to make the RAM 667Mhz. It's only when I increase the FSB (and not the RAM at all) does the system become unstable. At 266MHz FSB and 667MHz RAM, my system will pass any stress test, but not at 333Mhz FSB and 667Mhz RAM.
I've upped the CPU voltage 3 notches to around 1.350 or so under load. My ram is at 1.9v, although I tried 1.95v too. I didn't touch the chipset voltage (should I?). My temperatures seem ok - I'm only using the stock Intel cooler, but it should be able to handle 3GHz fine. It hovers around 48c idle, 60c load according to Everest Ultimate (before it crashes in SuperPi), so it doesn't appear to be overheating while overclocked. Not great tempts but acceptable.
However, there are two things I've noticed:
    - In the BIOS, if I select CAS to be 5 or 6, CPUZ still reports my ram at CAS3 (which my RAM can't do at 667Mhz), or 3-5-5-15. However if I select CAS4, it reports CAS4 properly (still unstable though), or 4-5-5-15. This is only a problem when I overclock the FSB - at stock FSB, the CAS timings are reported correctly. It could be an issue with CPUZ, but I doubt it. If there is a bug with the P965 Platinum not setting the CAS right when overclocking, this might explain why I'm having RAM stability issues even though I'm not overclocking the RAM - i.e. because the board is not using the right CAS setting. Is this a known bug? Also, I tried Auto SPD but it tried to use 4-4-4-12 at 667MHz (again, which this RAM won't do).
    - When I run 333Mhz FSB and 667MHz RAM, the POST shows some sort of error message about the board not supporting CPU's with a 267Mhz FSB or something (which is weird, because 266Mhz is the stock speed *shrug*), and that it's resetting it. Sorry I can't recall the exact error off hand, but I can try the overclock again and provide it later on if needed. Anyway, despite the error message, the overclock still applies - it will boot into Vista 64-bit at 3Ghz, it just won't pass any stress test.
Is it possible a BIOS update could help me? I run V1.4, and even though I know there is a V1.8 now, no newer version mentions anything about fixing overclocking issues. I don't like to update my BIOS unless necessary (and I don't even have a floppy drive anyway, would need to figure out how to do it via USB).
Thanks for any help. I'm certain my RAM isn't faulty and I'm certain my CPU should be able to reach 3Ghz surely. I'm also pretty sure heat isn't an issue. I think maybe the board is trying to force CAS3 when FSB overclocking or something? That's my guess anyway.

    Thanks for the reply!
Sorry, I should have mentioned I was definitely achieving 1:1 - I recall the confusion over why my RAM was trying to be 800+MHz at 667 and then I realized 533 actually meant 1:1, 667 4:5 etc, so I am definitely running at 533/1:1. I doubt this RAM would even post at 800+ MHz.
So updating the BIOS may help? Ok thanks, I guess I will update then. I don't see it in the "fix" list though on the site. Is there a way I can get a *full* fix/enhancement list for 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 so I know exactly what I'm fixing going from 1.4 to 1.8?
Also, does MSI support LiveUpdate BIOS in Windows Vista 64 yet? And if not, is there an official way to update via a USB stick? (no FDD here).

  • P965 Platinum and XP hell - found a way

    Hi guys,
I had ugly startup problems with the P965 Platinum and a Samsung Spinpoint SATAII HDD. So I want to share with you how I finally got there. I tried for a whole day to install XP as I wanted a dual boot with Vista. Trying XP Home OEM did not work, I got those blue screens we have seen in here. I tried everything, but to no avail. Two short beeps during startup also confused me, but forget about those for now. Well after hours of frustration I installed Vista. It worked! And told me that my Corsair RAM was probably OK, as well as my HDD. Then I had a drink too much and went to bed.
Today I slipstreamed XP with Service Pack 2, and managed to make a bootable CD. So now I got XP Home SP2. Tried again, and this time I got past blue screens...but when XP came to the first reboot...arghh no HDD. Today I was actually going to RMA the whole crap, but got a tip from the vendor.
On the MSI driver CD there is a IDE folder, with a "floppy" containing the AHCI ICH8 drivers. I read the readme and moved the files to a floppy, then put the floppy into the drive. Then I went into the BIOS and set SATA to AHCI. Started the install, pressed F6 and loaded the drivers from the floppy. I selected ICH8 AHCI, and XP was happy. During the installation it read the floppy once more and obviously recognized stuff. So here I am, up and running. Rock steady.
I think both MSI and vendors should inform us better about such.
I still got those two short beeps at startup, three if the USB CDRom is on. Can anyone please explain those beeps to me?
    Cheers,

Glad you found your way out of "hell".  The problems that threw themselves in your way are well known to many P965 Plat. users in this forum. It is good to see that you were able to solve them.

  • P965 Platinum and Realtek RTL8111B problem

I have a dual boot setup on my computer:  Windows XP and Fedora 7 Linux.
After booting Windows XP I will have to COMPLETELY UNPLUG the power supply from my computer before booting to Fedora 7 Linux.  The reason:  If I simply reboot or turn off the computer (simply turning off does not remove the power from the mainboard), then the Realtek RTL8111B onboard LAN is left in a state which prevents Fedora 7 Linux from being able to use the LAN.  Fedora simply reports the LAN is not available.  The solution, which I find unacceptable, is to completely turn off the Realtek RTL8111B on the P965 Platinum and use an old Realtek 8129 PCI network board.
A better solution would be for the MSI BIOS to reset all of the Realtek RTL8111B LAN chipset's bits to a valid state so that Fedora 7 Linux would be able to properly recognize and use the onboard LAN.
Again, if I COMPLETELY UNPLUG my computer's power supply Fedora 7 Linux always finds and uses the onboard LAN.  It is only after using Windows XP and rebooting to Fedora 7 Linux without completely unplugging the power supply first that there is a problem.  This would seem to indicate the MSI BIOS is not resetting the Realtek RTL8111B onboard LAN chipset to a clean state when it initializes the system upon booting.
I am using MSI P965 Platinum BIOS version 1.4

Uhm, I'm having exactly the same issue under linux.
The router's led will stay off and it looks like there was no network cable connected (Realtek Ethernet controllers are insmod'ed and everything looks fine).
The only thing I haven't tried is unplugging the power supply's cable ... weird.
I'm also upset about this problem  >:(

  • MSI 965 Platinum and E6700 Core2. HELP

My problem is this. I just got a MSI 965 platinum and a E6700 CPU.
But when i check the little apps called CPU-Z then i can se my multiplier is only at 6x instead og 10x as default and core speed around 1600Ghz. I think its called (EIST) ?? or something.
I did turn of the 3 thing in BIOS setup. Spread Spectrum, Speedsteep and the vanderpool. I tought that would keep my CPU running at full speed all time. But it dosent. Its still in auto mode (EIST) i can see in CPUZ
I need some help here please. I dont want to use that processor cycling auto mode, i want it at 2.66Ghz all time.
Is that posible with this combination ?  Can anybody help her please.
    thx

Some topics you should read/scroll through first, as they contain useful info on what issues this board has using the current BIOS:

Overclocking on this board right now is just highly irregular, you can't tell what you are going to get. We will have to wait for a new BIOS release...
Like the rest of us, your choice in motherboards has been unlucky. Hopefully a new BIOS release will help overclocking.
What seems to be your maximum FSB right now?

  • P965 Platinum and Vista x64 RAID config?

Ok, I have looked all over this forum for Vista x64 issues. Nothing even comes close to my problem. When I load Windows Vista Ultimate x64 Edition onto a clean SATAII drive (single non-RAID drive) I have no problems what-so-ever.
Now here is when it really gets weird. When I run install on a RAID array (2 SATAII Seagate 160GB drives) I see issues in the install. First thing I see is it corrupts the data on the first drive. This causes a blue screen at restart. When I go into the RAID config (ctrl+I) I see the first drive has errors. The only thing I can do is delete the RAID and start over.
When I reinstall Win XP Pro X64 I have no problems at all. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the downloads section and I have tried the newer Intel drivers. Non work!
    Computer info:
    CPU: Intel 3.4GHz Pentium D x64
    MB: MSI P965 Platinum
    Storage: 2x Seagate 160GB SATAII
RAID: Intel ICH7R/ICH8R SATA RAID driver 2006-08-29 (and have tried the newer driver from Intel)
If you need more just ask!
Oh yeah, I looked at the specs sheet for the P965. They need to remove the NEC 3550 from the "OK" list since it does not Wright period or READ at install. I went through a big deal with MSI about this and they still have not removed it.

Well sh**! I borrowed a friends Vista x86 and found it to also have the same issue. Would not even load the "Choose Drive" screen or allow me to even install the RAID drivers.
Man when a board gets Vista approved is must not take much. I have had compatibility issues with this board since day one. I think maybe it is time to through it away. What a shame since it is only a few months old.

  • MSI DKA790GX Platinum and AM3 CPU - BIOS Update

    Hi,
I am going to upgrade my current computer from an older AMD socket 939 setup to an AMD Phenom II based system
I am thinking of the MSI DKA790GX Platinum motherboard and AMD Phenom II X3 720 (Black edition) CPU (AM2+ Motherboard and AM3 CPU), but I need to clear up the BIOS update for AM3 issue before buying the components.
The motherboard advertisement states that the BIOS has to be upgraded to support AM3 CPU
My issue is this: I do not have an AM2/AM2+ CPU, and I am looking to jump right into buying an AM3 CPU - so will the unit power-up/POST with the combination of the newer AM3 CPU and older BIOS to allow me to update the BIOS using either FDD or Bootable USB Pen in a DOS environment?
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this? Any help on this would be appreciated
    Thanks

The 1.74 Bios is one I got from MSI tech support.  We're trying to work through a problem with my new board. nothing major, but we're not quite there yet.
I know that Nvidia was The chipset to have for several years, but I think AMD has upset that applecart a bit with the 780 & now 790 chipsets, and with Intel
getting into the chipset game as well, Nvidia could see some rough times ahead.  They may even end up dropping out of the chipset game, since Intel's new CPUs have the memory controller built on die.  Hence, Intel has no real need for NVidia any more, Nvidia may end up just focusing on the video card market, unless?
My board defaults to 800mhz as well and I'm running a 720. You have to keep in mind that they have to make the boards default to the lowest common denominator as not everyone runs 1066 capable memory on their board (even though Manufacturers may spec the memory so). I also have to manually bump up the voltage, as well as timings and ratio for 1066.  But, my Mushkin ram plugged in and booted with no problems, but I did have to bump up the voltage and tighten up the timings even at 800.
Interesting (Abut BIOS version 1.74). I guess it is not yet available for downloads.
So now Intel CPU's have the memory controller on the die (just like AMD). So does this prove as an advantageous concept? I expect Intel to implement better memory management than AMD. AMD drops speed when all 4 memory banks are occupied... what is the use of utilizing max RAM capability if memory controller cannot sustain the max RAM speed?
I may agree with you on the concept that motherboard should support the lowest (RAM) denominator...
However if someone uses lower than 1066 MHz sticks, system should detect accordingly, and when 1066 sticks are used, auto-detect as 1066... I still do not see the issue here. On former nVidia based boards like my MSI K9A Platinum SLI (with an AMD X2 CPU), 800 MHz modules are detected as 800 on auto, no need to manually tweak anything in BIOS. I still have to see an nVidia EPP profile enabled board which is claimed to auto detect 1066 MHz capable memory sticks by default.
On my system it is also the same... I have to up the RAM voltage to 2.2V (otherwise system is not stable), as well as setting up the timings and of course the RAM/FSB speed ratio to 1:2.66.
I am running currently 4 chips of OCZ platinum 2 GHZ (for a total of 8 GB RAM, for 64 bit Vista and Linux). Also with mine (as we know Phenom II does not support 4 sticks of 1066 MHz) it drops to 800 MHz. As well as, I needed to bump the voltage to 2.2 V... otherwise in the middle of operation, system reboots. We know what this is about, dont we ?

  • P965 Platinum and Crossfire

OK, if this has already been posted, I sure can't find it with the search...  So..
I have a system running the 965 Platinum, 6300 CPU, and a single ATI X1600 pro video card (xp64 if it matters)..  I can't seem to find a solid answer as to whether I can run a second X1600 pro on this board in Crossfire mode...
    Anybody know for sure?
    Thanks in advance

Sorry, didn't mean to come off like a jerk    It's just that before I posted, I had already read all I could find..  I was hoping there was someone here who had tried it and could let me know if it worked or not...
Some of what I'm reading implies that you need a newer card (like the X1950 or such) to work crossfire on the P965, but then other stuff sounds like the X1600 would work..  I'd just like to know for sure before I drop cash on the card.
You just need a card that doesn't use the external dongle of early Cross-Fire (that big white thing outside the chassis) IIRC... I can't remember wherever the X1600 uses it or not, depends on how new the card is

  • P965 Platinum and Zalman CNPS9500AT

    Hi
I have recently built system with above two components (and dual core 6400)
I can set bios to monitor fan speed and temp (Rpm 2000)
or dual core centre(which does not seem too good) at min fan speed gives (2400rpm)
The processor temp is about 32
Unfortunately the system is noisy and I had hoped it would be silent
I would like to decrease fan speed to 1300 rpm just not sure how to do this
I got cnps9500 because it was supposed to be automatic Perhaps not compatible with P965
I have a zalman fanmate 2 but it is a 3 pin connector
Anybody got any suggestions or help?
    Thanks for your time
    Richard

    Hi everyone
    thanks for responses
The Zalman fan has a 4 pin connector it is the fanmate 2 that has 3 pin connector
The zalman fan can be controlled from MSI dual core centre program but this only allows speed in range 2700 to 2200rpm (1 to 7  slowest to fastest)
So the fan can be controlled from software  I think I read that a beta version of speedfan might work
At the moment I am thinking of going back to the intel fan that came with the processor!
    Thanks again

  • These ATI cards 9500 Pro and 9700 Pro ok for MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and winchester cpu? Compatible?

Looking at grabbing a used ATI 9500 Pro or used 9700 Pro AGP card for my MSI Neo2 Plat since I can't use my Matrox G400.
Any problems using either of the above cards? I don't play a huge amount of 3D games so I'm not going to grab a 9800 Pro or XT or 6600GT. A 9500 or 9700 Pro would allow me to play the newer games at reasonable resolutions. Just want to make sure they are compatible.
    thanx

Ok guys, thanx for the feedback. I missed the 9500 Pro sale, so maybe its for the better. If I'm going to try a bit of 3D gaming, I may aswell get a little bit better card. So here is my question for you folks:
For my MSI K8N Neo2 and AMD64 3000+ system, I want a card that will have good 2D output and good DVD playback. I want to try some 3D games, but don't want to have the minimum. I was looking at used 9500 Pro's and the 9600 XT but I've come across a used 9700 Pro and a 9800 Pro and 9800 Pro with r360 core (almost a 9800XT). So if I get a 9700 Pro, what will I be able to play smoothly at what settings and what will I be unable to play. Ultimately, I may play mostly on my projector at 858 x 484, so maybe the cards don't matter too much. If I don't play 3D games much after a while, I'll probably downgrade, but I want to give it a try. I can't afford a new 9800 Pro/XT or 6600GT.
Used cards I'm deciding between. Have to act fast.
9700 Pro $170 CAD or 9800Pro $210 CAD or 9800 with r360 core $230. Price differences between the cards is as you see there.
thanx in advance for any feedback,

At least for this summer, you should leave them at 5-5-5-15 and 1.85V
Also take care with that E6400 running at 3.2GHz. It won't last long!

You preach too much! Instead of the CPU lasting ~7-8 years it will last ~4-6. I don't see why you keep a CPU that long...

try messing with memset http://www.tweakers.fr/memset.html. with that you can change timings in windows, if your system doesnt hang when you apply the timings it should post. i had to do that to correct my timings when i underclocked my memory to achieve a post.
