P965 Platinum booting problems

Hi all,
I have a serious problems with stability of my system. It seems to behave pretty randomly. Every now and then when the power button is pressed the system seems to start booting up for 2-3 seconds, then suddenly turns off and re-boots again. If everything goes ok windows is loaded and sysem is pretty much stable. However every one in five booting attempts ends up with system trying to boot a couple of times, getting on and off constantly so there is not even a chance o get to BIOS. After some time the POST screen shows up saying that an overclocking attempt has failed and system will be restored to te defaults. The story is that there has never been an overclocking attempt whatsoever since I can not get he system running stable at stock settings!!! Anyway, I get finally to BIOS but sometimes next restart of the system occurs and the story is all over again. When I finally get to the settings and restore the defaults the system will reboot alright and for the next couple of times it will turn on normally untill the next doggy start forces me to get to the BIOS and start al over again. Initially I thought that this is due to the fact that the memory runs at 667MHz(2x333MHz) when the FSB is set to 266MHz - FSB:DRAM 4:5. I changed it manually to 533MHz (FSB:DRAM 1:1) but the problem did no vanish. I also tried different memory timings set manualy and by SPD but it also failed. At this stage I used up all my ideas and really do not know what to do know. The memory I have is pluged in in slots 1 and 3 for dual channel operation.
I bought this motheroard to get fast and stable system that will not failed during week-long simulations and I'm very dissapointed with what I got so far. Below are my system specs:
Intel E6300
MSI P965 Platinum
Corsair 2x1024 PC 5300 matched
NorthQ 4001 400W PSU
Gainward GeForce 7300GT
WD SATA 250 GB
NEC DVD-RW AD 7173
Windows XP Pro SP2
I hope somebody can help me or at least give me a hint where to look for solution.
Thanks

the only way I have no problem with this mobo is putting ddr moules in slot 3 and 4 (no dual channel)

  • P45 Platinum boot problem!!!

    PC specs in signature below!!
Ok, this is a new system, and it has been running GREAT since I started it for the first time. I am running my RAM with manual settings of 5 5 5 18/1.8v/800. Nothing is overclocked!!
Anyway, this morning I get to the office anxiously anticipating starting up my new system for a day of pristine computing. It starts up, the screen appears where you can hit "delete" to enter the bios. The screen hangs there for allot longer than I remember. Then, I get this message popping up on the screen: ''Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device''.
The first thing I did was hit Ctrl/Alt/Del to reboot and enter the bios to check my boot order. Everything was set exactly the way it is supposed to be. CD/RW first, then my OS drive. I exit out, and it boots into windows just fine.
Ok, later I decide to run check disk on my OS drive, thinking that maybe it's going bad, and the bios is having trouble seeing it. Check disk finishes, and it goes to boot into windows, and I get the ''Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device'' message again.
So, once again I hit Ctrl/Alt/Del to reboot, and it hangs on the screen where you can enter the bios. I quickly hit delete this time to enter the bios to see if my operating system drive is recognized. When I do this, it enters the bios, but hangs for awhile where it detects the hardware. Finally I can get to all the features in the bios, so I check to see if my hardware is recognized. Both my SATA hard drives do not show up as being recognized. My SATA CD/RW shows up, but not my hard drives.
So, I exit out of the bios, and it boots to windows just fine. I restart my system again to see what happens, and it boot just fine into windows.
Anyway, I went ahead and shut down my system, pulled the power plug, and cleared the CMOS. I then started the system back, entered the bios and set up all my settings, and it boots right into windows fine.
What do you think happened here?  At first I thought maybe my OS drive was going bad, but after discovering that the bios didn't see either one of my drives, I ruled that out. Plus check disk was fine on the OS drive.
    Any ideas??

Ok, I am still having an issue with this boot problem described above. Now that I have used my system allot more, I have discovered some more details. This boot problem only occurs when I plug anything into the system that gets noticed in the "boot order" in the bios. Example: USB thumb drive, external hard drive, or even swapping out an internal drive. The next time I re-boot, it fails like I described above.
Ok, here are some more experiences I have had. My system had been running great, and boot ups were working perfect. I decided I wanted to add a 3rd internal hard drive for storage. I already had my C operating system drive, and a D storage drive. I bought a large Seagate for a 3rd F storage drive. My CD/RW is listed as my E drive. So, I power my system off, and turn off the switch on the back of the PSU. I then add my 3rd hard drive and hook it all up. I power on my system. It boots to the bios screen where you hit delete to enter the bios. I enter the bios and I see all three of my hard drives. I check to make sure my boot order is correct, and save and exit the bios. As it booting, this time it hangs for a longer time at the screen where you can enter the bios. I hit the delete key to enter the bios, but it once again hangs while it tries to list all the hardware. Finally I can get to the bios setup screen, and both my C drive and D drive are not recognized, but my new Seagate is. For the record, my C drive is connected on the #1 SATA connection, my D drive is on the #2 SATA connection, and my new Seagate drive is on the #3 SATA connection. So, I select optimized defaults, save, and exit the bios. I re-enter the bios just fine and in the normal timely fashion. Now all my hardware is recognized. I set up my RAM again and other settings, and save, exit, and my system boots perfect.
So, I go about a week of perfect boot ups and no problems. I decided to buy a new larger hard drive to replace my existing C operating system drive. My plan was to install the new drive, and simply restore from a current image made from my old hard drive. I get my new C drive installed, and plugged into the #1 SATA connection on the mobo just like before. Ok, same drill......I enter the bios, and all my drives are recognized. I set my boot order, save, and exit. AGAIN, when it gets to the bios screen where you hit delete to enter the bios.....it hangs for longer than usual. I know exactly what it's doing, so I hit delete. It lags again as it starts to list hardware. Again, when I get to the setup bios screen, my C drive, and D drive are not recognized, yet my F drive is......just like before. So, both the drives connected to the #1, and #2 SATA connections on the mobo are not seen in the bios, yet the hard drive on #3 is seen. I do the same thing again, which is load optimized defaults, save, exit, and re-enter the bios again just fine. All drives are seen, I set up my personal settings, and all is well again.
The last time it happened was when I connected my USB thumb drive. Same exact scenario. The thumb drive shows up, and my F drive with the C drive and D drive missing again.
Any ideas??  The system will run just great now the way it is. But, the second I stick my thumb drive in, or an external hard drive, my C and D drive will disappear on next boot. If I kept the thumb drive and external drive connected, and just loaded optimized defaults, then rebooted and loaded my personal setting, I would never have the boot problem again. It just doesn't like me disconnecting, and re-connecting hardware I guess.
About the only thing I can think of to try is connecting my C and D drive to different SATA connections. But, even if that worked, it wouldn't fix the problem.

The problem is, that the screen is blank and there's no error beeps, when I fire up the system.
The D-bracket keeps giving me the 1-0-0-0 (Early Chipset Initialization)
    So far I have tried:
Reseat the CPU, didnt help. (This is the 2nd (or 3rd) CPU on this board)
Tried diffence slot, for the memory.
    Tried another memory type.
    Tried another GFX.
In every case, the D-bracket gives me the 1-0-0-0.
Just tried to fire up the system, without the CPU/MEMORY/GFX, and still I get the 1-0-0-0 (Early Chipset Initialization)
    Is the mainboard dead then?
Does anybody know of a solution, to this problem? Or any ideers at all?
    Thanks

  • K9A2 Platinum Boot Problems

Dose any one know why I cant' boot from the DVD drives that I have connected to The SATA ports 5&6, I can see the drive in the CMOS boot order and I chose the first DVD Drive (Port 5) as the first boot disk.  Is it even Possible to boot from the Promise T3 Controller on the MB (K9A2 Platinum V1). I am using the other controller (sb600) for a RAID 0=1 Array. I ma trying to install windows 7 rc.
In order to install XP Pro I had to temp in an IDE CD/DVD drive on the MB IDE Connector

Maybe the DVD-device has a problem, as in not working all that well.
One troubleshooting step would be to try a different port, 5-6 is aimed at RAID it says on the home page:

  • MSI p965 NEO boot problems

    Hello everyone.
My DVD-rom is installed in IDE, and i have sata HD. My boot device is CD-rom.
OK, so my problem is that i puit windows XP cd in my dvdrom, because i want to install XP. Ok, so firstly my dvd doesnt show up on the IDE listing, they are all 'None', i press F1 to continue, my other option is DELITE to enter bios. Ok, so i get to a screen where my HD shows up, and also my DVD, then i get the option to enter the realtek setup hablahabla shift+f10, and this i dont need. Then i get to another screen it shows all these different things but ends with "Verifying DMI pool data ....." and then i get the msg ITLDR is missing, and i get the option to press CTRL alt delete to reboot.
So plz, how do i fix so that i can fornmate my hd and install windows XP?
    thanks //eric karlsson

fendic thanks for your input, its given me some progress i hope.
I did connect it to one of the four ones, not the 1 in other color. Now, this made my HD show up as IDE Secondary Master. Instead of the previous "none", the rest of the IDE on start are still "None". As for my "DVD-ROM", after ive pressed F1 during the first screen, i get on the second one saying 0DD0: Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A, in green text, which is my DVD-ROM. Now, i think the issue for some reason is that even though i have CDROM as first boot device it still trys to boot it from HD. because when i unplug my HD i can boot XP using my windows XP CD in my DVD ROM. Also, my BiOS is 1.5, im not sure how to flash bios using a floppy or whatever, but i will look into it and ill post if i ever succsed to make my bios 1.6. Oh, and yes im using a SATA HD.
    Thanks
    Eric Karlsson
EDIT; I flashed bios to 1.6 now, but the problem still remains im affraid.  Iv bin doing some lurking about and i cant let go off 1 thing, and its "enable JMicron as IDE". Since my DVD-rom shows in green text druing the JMicron screen.
EDIT2; This is how i flashed, its from a post on tgis forum. I had to unplug my HD to make it boot from the CD-ROM. But after puting the HD back on, it still does not work.
"Hello, welcome to forum. if you are planing to update BIOS:
get P965 Neo BIOS ver. 1.6 CD Image (have modded boot record and integrate JMB361 Dos drivers.)
    How do i flash it?
Extract image file from archive, and burn it to CD.(example: open it with nero burning rom and burn image file to CD)
Make and ensure PC is stable, then reboot PC and boot from CD. you will need to confirm twice BIOS update when asked.
after BIOS update is complete successfully, power down your PC, remove power cord from the PSU, hit few time power button to drain electrify from capacitors, touch some metal with hands to discharge any ES which you may have, then open the case and Clear CMOS then pull back power cord, and turn on your PC, will be notice CMOS CHEKSUM MISMATCH/ERROR, hit F1 to continue to rebuild DMI Pool Data, then reboot your PC, and enter in BIOS and LOAD BIOS DEFAULT, SAVE AND EXIT, go back to BIOS and apply your customs settings."
Check the bold part in the qotation, thats the drivers for JMicron i think, still there is no succses for me.

i tryed everything, another mems, another vid card... i started my pc with only mems, vid and heatsink and nothing...only the beps
i put my cpu on another pc and works fine.. and put another cpu on mi mother and the same problem..
    i clear cmos and nothing
i change the psu for a generic 520w and nothing
    plz HElp
    cyas
EDIT: DBRACKET led 1, 2, 4 in red // led 3 in green

Sounds like bad/not levered pressure from the new heatsink to the cpu HS .
Make sure it correct aligned and the right way and has the correct pressure
to the cpus heatspreader . Also make sure motherboard can read the fans rpm .
    [edit:]
btw i agree with bas , your current psu is weak .
The polo fan also is a very watt hungry fan compared to boxed .

  • MSI X48c Platinum boot problem

    Hi,
I recently bought a X48c Platinum and it was working fine for the last 3 weeks, but when tried to turn on my computer this morning, it failed.  (I did not change anything in my configuration.)
The power led turns on and the HDD led blinks at a fixed interval.
All the fans start and keep going at full speed.
After a while the computer turns itself of and goes into a "reboot" loop, it turns on for half a second and shuts down again and repeats this every 5 seconds.
At the moment the only thing installed on the motherboard is the CPU (and the PSU connections) and it's still not working.
Is this a known problem, has anyone ever had the same problem, or is my motherboard just dead?
Mandatory info (although probably not relevant):
    Intel q6600 @ 2.4ghz (arctic freezer 7 pro)
    X48C Platinum (MS-7353 ver:3.0)
    GEIL, DDR2800, 2*2GB
    Ati Radeon 4870 (512mb)
    Western digital 1tb 5400rpm / samsung spinpoint 500gb 7200rpm / kingston SSDnow 40gb
    Windows 7 64bit (ultimate)
    OCZ600SXS (3.3v/36a, 5v/30a, 12v/18a)

I went back to the store and got a new motherboard, after I got back it still wasn't working.
Bought a new PSU and it's working again, my motherboard, PSU and DVD drive were all broken
Probably a power surge or something.
Anyway, thought I'd post how I "fixed" the problem

  • MSI X48C Platinum booting problems

    Hello all,
First of all, I tried using the searchfunction multiple times and didn't find anything helpful.
So I hope you guys can try and help me with this problem since it's a real pain in the ass.
I built a new setup using:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300
    OCZ Reaper PC3 10666 DDR3 2x2GB
    OCZ ModXtream Pro 600W
    WD 80GB SATA HDD
    XFX 9800GTX+
The system booted fine until it got to the POST-screen with the MSI logo. I googled and figured that the Q8300 was not supported and I had to update the BIOS.
With that being said, I got a replacement CPU (C2D E6600) and tried to boot the system. But I gave me and beep-errorcode; 2 short beeps 6 long beeps, no videosignal
I thought it was either the RAM, videocard or the CPU,
so I replaced the RAM with; DDR2 RAM (Kingston KVR800D2N6/2G)/OCZ PC2 8500 1GB (using the Turbocards for DDR2)
the videocard with: ATI HD 5470
and the CPU with a Pentium 6 630
How many times I tried swapping components, it didn't really matter. The system would still give me these cursed 2 shorts beeps and 6 long beeps.
    What I've tried so far;
    Clearing the CMOS using: https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/how-to-clear-the-cmos
    Removing the CMOS battery
Switching between hardwarecomponents as stated above
Reseating the same memory multiple times
    In short:
Errorbeep-code: 2 short beeps and 6 long beeps, no videosignal
Really hope you guys can help me,
    Thanks.

Confirm that you tested your Power Supply in another system.
Have you tested the MB outside the case, just resting on a non-conductive surface.

  • K8N SLI Platinum boot problems

    Hi there everyone,
I am new here so I am sorry for any mistake I make while setting up the topic.
Anyway, I have just bought this board but I have experienced some problems. When I turn on my PC it sometimes doesnt boot and halts on POST and sometimes when the logo of Win appears.
I dont know what to do . I have already loaded the latest BIOS, I run without overclocking but I still have these problems.
    Here is my setup:
    A64 3000+ (Venice)
    Gainward 7600GS
Fortron 350W (20 pin and here could be the problem, coz mobo has 24pin)
    2x512MB DDR PQI
    Audigy 4
    TV card Leadtek
    80GB Seagate
    Thanks for any help guys....

OK, guys, I guess you are right.
But I was to a website (I dont remember address) where you could compute the power supply you need according to your parts in PC and I had something about 240W so I hoped my PSU would be enough
Well, anyway thanks for help and I am going to shop for new power supply
//EDIT: I have P-ATA HDD and it is always detected. It gets stuck sometimes before HDD detection, sometimes after it and sometimes during the WIN logo....

  • MOVED: K8N Neo 4 Platinum Boot problem

This topic has been moved to AMD64 nVidia Based board.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=110171.0

Ups, I messed up. Thanks for moving this to the correct forum!
Yes, I'm using 1st Dimm slot. I cleared CMOS with and without the power cord, with and without the battery, and every way possible. I even held the button down for 2 minutes.
PSU is Vitsuba 450W. The 12V rail has 20A.
I don't have a better PSU. Should I buy one?
Already tried barebone setup. Just didn't know what it was called. Reseated CPU but didn't change anything. There are no bent pins.
How this happened. I was working in windows and it BSOD. I reset and it didn't boot at first time, but after several tries it finally booted. That was last week. The problem repeated once again yesterday, so I decided to do a clean reinstall of Windows, just in case. So I had some troubles to boot again but it booted ok after some time. Installed windows, drivers, updates, apps, etc and everything was fine. I switched off the system yesterday at night. Today the pc won't boot anymore. So, here I am!
Thanks for your assistance and don't hesitate to ask me some more questions!

ok so this motherboard has been running for around 3 months with no problems. Motherboard boots up it POSTS and then freezes when the windows logo comes up. Now I have tried and installed a fresh install of xp and the same problems occurs. Only way i can get to windows is that after it freezes i shut it down by pressing the power button and then it restarts and would now go to windows.

    Antec 650watts psu
    XFX 8500GT

    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hello rvdsts,
try with one stick of RAM only and see if there is any change in boot-up behaviour.
Which BIOS-Version are you currently using?

  • 865 Platinum Boot problems

Hi, think I could need some ideas / help here.
I have just made some rearrangements and changed chassi with my 865 platinum board together with some other components ( what´s mainly differs compared to below sig, is a radeon 9500pro and 2x512mb twinmos 3200 )
All components have work individual before putting it together.
When boot, it stops at MSI logo for a couple of minutes, after that it just keep trying to boot from LAN ( serching mac addr.)
Can´t reach bios setting and no other keyboard command is answering.
D-bracket is blaming "Initalize floppy drive controller"
    ( Red number2 - the other´s green ) - if the manual is right.
    I have :
    - Reset cmos
    - Checked all cables
    - Tried to boot without floppy ( without power/cable)
    - tried to boot with differant hdd
    - Changed PSU
    - Changed mem.slots ( tested with one or two sticks )
    Any ideas anybody ??
    Thanks........

    Thanks Raven, but no luck.
I´ve changed mem.modules to the same A-data that worked before but still no boot except MSI logo/Core Cell.
I´ve checked all connections and switch diff. cables over again with no luck.
Several jumper/battery cmos resets. Seems like no power to hdd /Cd/ Floppy.
CDrom dead when pushing open button.
Then I installed all of the same components back to a an old 845 board ( except another cpu) and everyhing work perfectly.
So I have to face it - my 865 P-board is gone
Starting to think back - I´ve had some high pitch noise coming from the PC when load, thought this was coming from psu, fans, hdd or whatever,
But it also may have come from the MB itself - so there could have been a more or less faulty board a while back. Still there´s no visual signs on the board what my eyes can see.

  • P35 PLATINUM BOOT PROBLEMS

Had all sorts of problems with this but the final answer was to swap the RAM from Corsair XMS2 to OCZ - everything now seems fine!!

    Did you memtest corsair memory?
Did you have corsair memory set at 2.1V?
What are your full system spex?

  • P965 Platinum network problem

Yesterday I bought myself a 1Gbps switch and thought now i would really have speed on my home Lan, great was my disapointment when i discovered that no matter what I try, my nic just wont run at anything above 100mbps.
I have tried everything from flashing the bios to trying full duplex, trying other cables looking in the bios and so on.
Does anyone know if there is an issue with this motherboard and gigabit lan, after all it should work. :(

I'm using cat 5e cables, tested it between my switch and another computer with gigabit ethernet, there it works fine. Tried 3 differnt cables, all work fine on my other computer, none of them work on my p965 motherboard. OR they work at 100mbps, just not gigabit :(
