P965 Platinum Dead in the Water

I have just upgraded to the above MB with core 2 duo E6600 processor. I cannot get any sign of life out of the computer. I have carried out the following checks:
-Mains voltage gets through to the PSU and the fuse is OK
-The 20 Pin ATX connector is properly plugged in, shifted towards pin No 1
-The front panel power switch works (checked it for continuity), but I also tried shorting the contacts on JFP 1 (pins 6 and 8).
-Reset the CMOS by removing the battery.
When I push the power switch absolutely nothing happens - no beeps, no sign of life. Has anyone any suggestions for something else to try?

Slaydeuk you are not alone. I have upgraded to p965 Platinum mobo, E6600 processor and 2x1GB OZC Platinum Rev.2 memory. And I have exactly the same problem as you. My PSU is Antec TPII 480W - http://www.antec.com/specs/TPII480_spe.html. I have tried everything… Now I suspect its either dead mobo, or underpowered PSU. Today I ordered Zalman 600W - http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=223&code=015. Hopefully it will arrive during next week.
Do you guys think my 480W is not enough, or is it a dead mobo?
By the way Slaydeuk, do you hear any sound from your PSU?.. I can hear a strange sound after I plug in the PSU. You know this electrical buzz sound.. I hear nothing on my older rig, with the same PSU. Can this sound mean anything?

You may have to follow the slightly more detailed steps in whichever of these two applies to you.

Rebooting into safe mode may be needed to delete any folder the instructions say you should remove. You may also find this Microsoft Fixit helps to remove stubborn components. It has taken some people several attempts to completely clean iTunes and supporting software before they have been able to successfully reinstall it.

Changed PW in my home network. Now when I try to log on I get "unable to connect" , but it doesn't ask for he new (or any) password, so I'm dead in the water. Any suggestions?

Use the Settings app to select your Wi-Fi network.
Settings > Wi-Fi > Select the Wi-Fi Network that will not work > then select Forget this Network
After to accept this choice your iPad should see your network again and allow you to enter the new password.

  • Anyone else have problems after QT 7.3 update?  My FCE is dead in the water

Since updating my QT to 7.3 my FCE will no longer export using QT conversion, nor will it allow clips to be installed into the time line. An "insufficient content for edit" comes up whether I try to install between other clips already in place or when I try to install a clip at the end. My FCE is, once again, dead in the water after a QT update.
I've looked for a QT 7.3 uninstaller but to no avail.

    Here's what happened.
After doing everything by the book, nothing worked-except that unsufficient edit warning-so I shut down for a few minutes and figured I'd try a few things.
After doing a cold reboot I opened the existing file with 7 hours of clips. It had an opening to it which had been shortened. I tried to insert a clip, and insufficient edit popped up again. I took the clip and tried to drag it to the timeline, nothing. I went to the absolute end of the timeline, tried dropping the clip onto a clean video/audio track and it appeared. That was a start. I took the clip and moved it to the tracks with existing video and audio (V1, A1,2) and it moved toward the existing clips with no problem.
I deleted the clip from the timeline and tried to install the clip through the canvas and it took. Don't ask me how or why, but for some reason it would not allow clips onto the timeline until it was 'retrained' for lack of a better term. It is now taking clips as it did before the troubles.
I'm wondering if there was some type of 'ghost' clip which just wouldn't go away until it was overwritten manually-although overwrite through the canvas wouldn't work before. Perhaps the problem and the updates were coincidental but experience would say no. I would guess I tripped something which may be difficult to reproduce, but it's returned as it was. Thanks for reminding me to do the maintenance, it had to help in the overall. But I'll remained thrilled that it works but baffled why it didn't.

  • SOS! My computer seems dead in the water and I can't get to an Apple Store!

I'm a Soldier in Iraq, so getting to the nearest Apple store is not an option. Even calling from here is a challenge. I tried to install Bootcamp but came up with a message that several files couldn't be moved and I needed to re-install my OS. I backed up everything on my USB drive, loaded my OS disk 1, and erased the HD. I turned it back on and a message came up staying that this disk couldn't be used to reload the OS. I have a MacBook Pro with the latest firmware and software updates. I don't even know how to get the disk out of the HD if necessary. Please help! Thanks in advance.

    Here's an idea.
You won't be able to restore a Mac Book Pro whatsoever from a MacBook software because the files are just different. What I would suggest now that you have a firewire cable is that yo do the following.
    1. Make sure your computer is shut down
    2. Being your wife's computer on plug the firewire cable to both computers
    3. Start up yours holding the "t" key (that is for firewire targetting mode)
    4. Once you've done this you'll see your computer displaying a firewire symbol and it will appear as an external HD on your wife's computer
    5. Open Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
    6. Select your computer's HD on the application (it'll be an orange icon)
    7. Once selected, run the verify and repair disk permissions
Hopefully after this process your files will corrected and your computer can come out of the water.
    Good Luck from Mexico

  • My homepage will load about 30% and then i'm dead in the water. when i close firefox it appears to close but when i try to reopen it tells me that it's already running. started with beta 6 i deleated and loaded ver 5 no change

when i start firefox, everything starts normal then my homepage (igoogle) starts to load, gets to about 30% and stops. from there i can click on links or bookmark and a new tab will open but no page will load. i can't get anywhere. then when i close firefox it appears to close normally but when i try to reopen firefox i get a message that firefox is still running but not responding and the only way to shut it down is to reboot. when it first occured i was running beta 6 (since it became available, i also used beta 4 & beta 5) i then uninstalled beta 6 and downloaded and installed ver 5 same problem. i then did a system restore to a time before the problem.. no luck. i'm not sure what to try next. IE & chrome both work fine

I'm in exactly the same boat - dead at blue screen, only option is to salvage using target mode.
I don't currently have access to another Mac to do target mode. I was planning to buy a new Mac this fall anyway, though. 2 questions in preparation for that purchase:
    1) Is there anything I can do before buying a new Mac to make the salvage process more successful? ie, should I spend the time and money going to the genius bar to have them help me get from totally crippled to partially crippled? (As for expertise, I'm a proficient consumer-grade user, but Apple Support walked me through the safe-boot process, etc.)
    2) Is Apple going to provide 10.5 once it is released to people who buy a new Mac in these 6 weeks pre-release?
    Thanks for your help,

  • I'm dead in the water

    15" Powerbook G4, 1.25GHz, 2GB RAM, OS 10.4.9 (I think - whatever the latest is)
I've had this Powerbook about 3 years. Haven't had one single problem with it other than it sometimes not coming out of sleep mode when I opened the lid. I had come to live with that. However, sometimes it required a hard restart to get it going again.
In the past month, I have noticed that my Powerbook has been heating up and running the fan almost all the time. It only used to do such things when the processor was being taxed heavily. I've been thinking about taking it to the shop to have it checked out. Well, now I might not have a choice.
Along with the heating up recently, I have noticed that when I open the lid and the PB comes out of sleep, that it occasionally freezes up. This didn't used to happen. I ran my tech tool pro utilities on it and it didn't seem to detect any issues. This morning, I opened the powerbook up and it came out of sleep mode, but froze. So, I did a hard reboot. This time, when it rebooted, it got to the blue screen (my computer automatically logs me in) and just sat and sat and sat. (SIGH)
I tried booting into safe mode -- got to the blue screen, and for a moment I saw a mouse cursor and it worked. Then, the spinning "wheel" showed up and sat that way for about 20 minutes before I gave up.
Then, I tried command-s, single user mode, and I ran fsck, it fixed errors, I ran it again, it said everything looked ok. I rebooted, same problem and I tried safe mode again -- to no avail.
I also tried this, which I found:
"If you can not get to the login prompt, or your login window appears but shows no users and no username/password boxes, your NetInfo directory is probably corrupted. Reboot into single-user mode and trash it
    :# cd /var/db/netinfo
    # mv local.nidb local.nidb.corrupted
    # reboot"
Those are the only things I have done so far. It should be noted that I have no disks.
I have SO many documents on that laptop that I need to get to, not to mention my iTunes and bookmarks (literally, hundreds of them), and my emails. Is there any hope for me here, or am I screwed? I used to be a PC technician, but I don't know a lot about the inner workings of Macs. Any help here would be much appreciated. I have seen a few posts that have shown this problem occurring lately. Thanks again.

  • Won't open at all after auto update!!! dead in the water!!!

yesterday I was informed that an auto update had been done. for 6.blah.2 or something. I don't know. I was immersed in the constitution and Thomas Jefferson was waxing his ass. Anyway last night I shut down, all is well in the world. This morning I try to log on to see if my prof has any news for me...nothing. You know, no coffee, perhaps I'm not awake, kidnapped by ailens. So I shut down and try again. Nothing. But IE worked...So here I am...What is up?

  • Brand New imac  ... dead in the water ... SOS

I just opened up my brand new imac 3.06 duo core yesterday, started it up, all ok. Today I transfered all my settings from my old G4 using firewire and the Migration Assistance in the utilities folder. After transferring data, restarted imac and that's where the problem begins... It will not restart. Every time I restart it stays on the white screen with the grey apple and the clock spinning below it. I tried restarting holding down the D key and then selecting my start up disk, I also tried installing the software disk and reinstalling the software, no luck. What I need to do is do a complete erase and install back to factory settings. Any ideas? When I put in the disk it is not giving me any options.

    HI Dale,
I transfered all my settings from my old G4 using firewire and the Migration Assistance
If you transferred files from a previous PowerPC Mac to your newer Intel based iMac using the Migration Assistant, that could account for these problems To see if you have apps that require Rosetta, go here; Intel-based Mac: How to tell if an application is Universal
I tried restarting holding down the D key
Booting while holding down the D key will run the Apple Hardware Test. To prompt the Startup Manager window, boot while holding down the Option key.
What I need to do is do a complete erase and install back to factory settings. Any ideas? When I put in the disk it is not giving me any options.
Insert your install disc while holding down the C key.
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
You can run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) to check the startup disk for errors. Restart by going to the Apple Menu/Restart.

  • Has anyone found a quick, permanent solution to the missing iTunes.msi file. It's very frustrating that I can't uninstall or reinstall. I have a new iphone and I'm dead in the water:)

Has anyone found a quick, permanent solution to the missing iTunes.msi File? I have tried many times to upgrade both itune and quicktime and get the same old error notice. Surely, by now, someone has found out how to get around this mess. Please....

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Macbook Pro 2012 Retina Won't Start, burnt power pins on power port, digital artist dead in the water

After a year of owning my macbook pro late 2012 retina model, it started having difficulty charging, it wouldn't charge even when green on the magsafe, and had difficulty turning orange, basically right after the 1 year warranty was over by one month, I went into the apple store and they told me that I simply needed to replace the power adapter and cord and it would be fine, but that it most likely was caused by me plugging it into a power strip, and that I had to plug it directly into the wall in its own power slot, which they never said that was what you were supposed to do when I purchased the laptop and could not find it anywhere in the literature. It was fine in the store for the apple worker, but after even just a few months I had to to constantly twist and unplug and replug the magsafe adapter from different angles just to get it to work, and it was like a living ****, as I am a digital artist and my wacom tablet will not work until my macbook pro is charging and the magsafe is orange, so everyday I would waste 30 minutes to an hour with the finicky magsafe, until recently my macbook pro will not turn on at all.
Since the problem arose after warranty I had to pay out of pocket for the replacement magesafe cord, which was a temporary solution, I pointed out that the magsafe power port on the laptop itself also had burn marks just like the magsafe cord that had a few pins pushed in and was slightly blackened but the attendant ignored that and said it was fine and just swapped out the cord. The "genius" attendant claimed if I just plugged in the macbook pro directly into the wall, everything would be fine and back to normal, and I did just that, I never plugged it into a power strip ever again, and still we arrive to my current predicament.
I believe I have to repair the actual power port the magsafe plugs into on the laptop, and get a new magsafe cord all over again, but it will be much more expensive than simply swapping out a cord this time, and I don't think the reason this happened to begin with has been truly identified, and I'm worried I have to make this repair every year, and I can't afford this kind of planned obsolescence, and I thought I was getting the best laptop in the world, and it was, everything was perfect not one single problem, except for this power issue, which now won't even allow me to use the computer at all and is now a giant paper weight, and leaves a dirty taste in my mouth when it comes to apple products.
I live in San Francisco in a house that was built around 1910 and don't know much about what or when renovations were made for power, but I have a feeling some kind of incorrect voltage is happening, and I was never instructed on this, and every other macbook is fine, my roommates have earlier models like the 2007 and 2009 MacBooks and have no problem like mine.
    Please help me

I don't understand why and how the red light in the audio jack is still on while the computer is totally off, not connected to any power source and the battery seems to be empty... how is taht possible?
Because the battery is not empty, something is messed up, likley the SMC.
All I can advise is doing a SMC Reset, which resets the power firmware in case it got messed up and hopefully that will charge the battery up like normal.
If you can't do it or it doesn't work tommorow after charging up (turned off) overnight then just take it to Apple.

  • My macbook pro said it was installing updates and when i clicked ok, its now dead in the water

So the first thing that was wrong with it was when I tried to install updates it wouldn't let me. I think I tried that like three times and right at the end of installing it said there was an error that occurred then showed my hard drive symbol. After that I noticed that google Chrome wouldn't open anymore, as soon as I opened it it said an error had occurred again and gave me some options or reopen, report or close... I just closed it because I didnt want to deal with that. Then the next thing was my downloading speed only maxed out at about 20kbs... When normally I think it use to hit 600 or 700. Then after that none of my icons would respond and started dissipating off the screen! So I tried restarting it and when It was on the white boot up screen it flashed a little black and white world symbol about the size of the apple logo that is suposed to be on that screen. Then when I got on there was no top bar.. Only some apps worked and thats pretty much it.
this is a transcript of the email that has my macbook pro right now

You provided no system or os profile.  This is very important when users here try to help.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left for starters?

  • DEAD IN THE WATER--Can't remove email from server-can't receive new emails

I stopped receiving emails this morning upon startup, steps taken:
    restarted mail
    rebooted
    backed up all inboxes
searched how to see message on server, found them and and can see one that says:
From: unknown sender Subject: No subject Date Recd: Today Time is always the current time.
I read a very old post from David Gimeno Gost who said:
"You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message not downloaded yet (i.e. the message that Mail appears to be choking on)."
I can't remove it from the server either by itself or grouped with other messages. Interestingly enough, I can receive emails on my iPhone and I changed my email address in my Apple info and received the verification email, but still nothing else that's sitting on the server.
Went into my email account through Webmail to delete it and can see all emails except that one
opened Mail on my mac mini, I couldn't receive email there for my email inbox, however I was able to receive email in my employees inbox on the same server but different email address.
Is this a Charter issue or a Mail issue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Renee

I finally figured it out. The server had to be refreshed by calling my hosting service. 9 hours of diagnosis and a 2 minute fix.
Hope that will help someone else:)

  • Help! i downloaded a newer version of Safari but it turns out it isn't compatible with my OS X (10.6.8). Now my computer is dead in the water - essentially it doesn't have a web browser.

Help! I downloaded a newer version of Safari but it turns out ... its not compatible with my OS X. Now my computer essentially has no browser and can't connect to the internet.

"… my dilemma is that my iMac…"
Download the old Safari to the MBP. Use a flash drive to transfer the .dmg installation file from the MBP to the iMac. Open the .dmg on the iMac and install Safari 5.1.10.
But, frankly, I don't think that simply reinstalling the old Safari will work because of all the peripheral, under the hood changes that happen when you upgrade from one version of Safari to another. Reinstalling 5.1.10 may be insufficient to turn back the clock. (This is the moment where a Time Machine or another form of full backup would save your bacon.)
While you're getting a copy of Safari, get a copy of Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/desktop/), too, so that you have an alternate browser to use as you're sorting matters.
