P965 Platinum IDE/SATA BIOS settings

Hi all,
After playing with my system I finally managed to find a proper setting for my SATA hard drive and IDE DVD-RW. If you want to meke this kind of configuration working first of all download the latest JMicron driver from MSI website. Then disable IDE as a master, put the SATA cable to the SATA socket no.1. In this way your DVD/CD will be working as a slave while the HD is a master. In this configuration the time to load windows is the shortest and there is no lag when using the DVD. The transfer DVD to HD is also excellent.
Good luck.

Please can you clarify what you mean when you disable IDE as master - is this in windows or bios? ??? The potential bios options are as follows:
1. On board raid controller
Setting to IDE : I get the DVD RW Recognised as a IDE device and burning capabilities (windows uses the standard IDE drivers not Intel or jmicro)
Setting to RAID:  windows recognises the DVD RW as a SCSI device but I don't seem to get any burning facilities with the device (windows uses the jmicro SCSI driver)
2. On chip ATA devices
2.1 IDE master enabled  : DVD RW works OK including burning capabilities
IDE master disabled :  DVD RW works OK but cant burn a disk
2.2 Setting SATA#1  to ACHI rather than raid Windows hangs (blue screen) during boot up
Setting  SARA#1 to RAID windows boots OK and hard drive recognised as ATA drive
(2.2 I know is caused by the fact that I set up the drive as a RAID drive during windows set up so no problem there.)

in windows something is wrong with the cd-rom when i use it my computer is going slowly.
i think this problem is caused by the jbmicron software.
anybody who can help me with this problem??

Would much appreciate some help if anyone is familiar with this issue!
I'm having a very difficult time getting the the 965 Platinum to recognize my IDE devices, and I don't know why. I've got a Sony DRU-500A DVD burner in the master position, and a Maxtor 6L300R0 hard drive in the slave position. The jumpers on those devices are appropriate for their position. The devices are "usuable", that is, I've been able to run the Windows XP installer (up to a point) and writes have occured to my hard drive, but the installation fails after the portion where you reboot after all the files have been written from the install disk.
In any case, the Standard CMOS screen simply never shows any devices detected on either the IDE Primary Master or Slave entries. I've tried disconnecting the DVD drive and just connecting the Hard Drive as master instead with no improvment. I've also tried disabling the SATA configurations, toggling PCI IDE Busmastering. Nothing works.
I've never been able to boot into Windows.
There was a point where the JMicron Raid menu showed this drive as a raid drive for reasons that aren't clear to me (the drive may have been a raid drive in the past). I've set the drive back to non-raid, rebooted back into my old system and everything checks out. No problems at all, so I think that there are any RAID issues.
I'm not a pro at building systems, so there could be user error anywhere alonog the way.
    Any ideas? I'm bamboozled!

  • DKA790GX Platinum no VGA Bios Settings

    Hi,
I recently acquired the DKA790GX Platinum motherboard together with the 9950BE processor. I am also running the system with the Powercolor 3870x2. I do not see the onboard vga settings in the bios as perscribed in the manual.
Would like to check if the settings only appear when there is no external graphics card connected to the board? The onboard graphics is also not detected in Windows Vista.
I am running on bios version 1.2.
    Please advise.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
I removed the 3870x2 and the bios settings for onboard graphics becomes present. After I reconnected the board, the vga settings are no longer available.
Hence, I'm wondering if this is by design? I do not need the onboard graphics but I'm just curious as to whether this is normal behaviour for the board or do I have a lemon.
I read somewhere that if we want to use both a discrete card and the integrated graphics, the discrete video card must be a 34xx series card. I installed an MSI ATI 3450 and my bios shows both  + side port.

  • P965 Platinum V1.2 Bios = OK V1.3 & V1.4 = not Ok using dual nvidia cards

Argh....  So I built the system in Jan.  Just read about the C2D microcode update from MS that inspired me to see if a new Bios release for my mainboard was out.  The last bios I tried was V1.3, and I see 1.4 is out.  So I wast a Sunday screwing around trying to get my system working before giving up in disgust and rolling back to the Ver 1.2 bios release, and everything works again.
This time I was very meticulous about my troubleshooting.  Problem boils down to the Nvidia 6200LE card in the PCIe X4 slot (yellow slot).
    See sig for starting point.
    Update Firmware to 1.4 release
Reboot, reset bios features to default, boot OS normally, hangs after splash screen, eventually times out on it's own and resets the system. Repeated one more time 'just to make sure'
Boot windows into safe mode, goto system properties, device manager, disable 6200 LE card, reboot.
Windows boots back up on main display fine.  Enable 6200 LE card, no problems.
Goto display properties, I see the main screen and the two secondary screens (both secondaries are greyed out because I haven't re-selected "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"
I place a check mark in the "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor", setup screen resolution and color dept.  As soon as I click "apply" system hangs for 60 seconds then resets and reboots and hangs again, resets reboots, hangs.
It will do this until I either boot back into safe mode or boot "last known good config"
So I do the nvidia driver shuffle, trying all the driver releases available including the beta release.  No joy.
I remove the 7800 card in the top PCIe slot and move the 6200 card to that slot.  reboot system and no problem enabling multi-displays.  OK, so the new bios does something to the second PCIe slot
I put the 6200 card back in the second PCIe slot, and try all manner of bios settings to see if I can make it work some how, no joy!
I put the system back together like it was before I started screwing around, rolled back the firmware to ver 1.2, and now all is ok.
What is different between 1.2 and 1.3 or 1.4 release that could cause such an odd problem?

Its all good, but still no joy
I re-flashed with 1.4 bios, powered off, pulled plug, attempted power on, pulled cmos jumper from pins 2-3 and re-installed on 1-2, waited, replaced cmos jumper to 2-3, applied power.
Got the same results as before with the noted exception that it complained about the cmos date being invalid when I power it up.   Other than that no change.
    I also tried
clear cmos, set date, save settings
clear cmos, set optimized defaults, set date, save settings
clear cmos, set date, set optimized defaults, save settings
Finally, I restore back to version 1.2 and all is well again.  (I keep telling myself, if it aint broke don't fix it, but ya know )

  • P965 Platinum IDE devices not recognized

I posted about this in a related thread, but I wanted to make a quick note of it in its own topic.
I have a DVD player and a hard drive, both of them IDE, that aren't recognized by the bios on this board. Is there maybe a problem with the IDE socket?

Quote from: leekh on 04-December-06, 14:37:55
ok. just check the specs of your power supply. http://www.antec.com/specs/sl400_spe.html
its seems that 18A output from the +12V rail is way too low for your system, especially for that power hungry GPU in your system. Try to borrow a higher powered PSU, with a mininum of 28A output from the +12V rail and see whether the problem still persists.
    good luck.
That's good info, though I kind of doubt it has anything to do with the IDE issue. I don't know much about the particulars of the amperage output on whichever rail for a system. My calculations for the wattage required by my system seemed to indicate that there was plenty enough of that to run my fairly spare and non-overclocked system with a bit of room left over.
I'm begining to suspect that the real issue is the usual JMicron crap, and that I'm going to have to get some SATA adapters for my IDE devices to get them into the Intel SATA ports on the board.

  • 945P Neo Platinum IDE or bios problem

Ive just fitted a maxtor diamondmax 10 160G hdd as a second drive to my pc, the hdd was previously in an external case, had no problems, now that it is connected to ide 2 on the mobo the transfer rate is incredibly slow, about 30 mins for a 4.5g DVD, ive looked in the bios changed the ide controller to ide instead of raid, i also checked device manager but cant seem to see anything wrong, any ideas

Tried Hd Tach i got 2.2Mb per sec, removed the drive tried it on usb and got 35Mb, will try installing the via controller, i thought the floppy was only for the raid drivers.
Thanks will let you know how i get on

Contacted ATI but their support team is baffled. I am wondering if its a BIOS problem. Want to try flashing it before RMAing the card. However I dont have a floppy drive and really dont want to get one. Is there a way to flash the BIOS without a floppy on MSI boards?

  • IDE & SATA setup

    Hi,
i'm about to build a new PC build around a 915P Neo2 Platinum. I'm a little concerned after reading the posts in these forums, the amout of problems people are having with IDE & SATA Bios setup. The setup will be simple enough 1 WD 160gb SATA HDD, and 1 Pioneer A104 DVD/CD rewriter. The questions are, which ide channel should the CD drive be plugged into 1,2 or 3 and should it be set as master or slave. What bios changes need to be made to take the above config into account.
    thanks
    Ian P.

Best to place the Optical drives to either Channel 1 or 2 and must be Master if only 1 drive is connect to that controller.

  • P965 Platinum False Start: Help...

I searched the boards and found a few threads dealing with the topic of false starts, but none really seemed to really address the situation completely.
    First, my system specs:
    MSI P965 Platinum
    v1.4 bios
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    RAM: CFD W2U800CQ-1GLZJ (DDR2-800 / 2GB)
    VIDEO: RX1950-E512H (Radeon 1950GT 512MB)
    DVD1: ASUS DRW-1814BLT SATA
DVD2: Pioneer DVR-A07-J-BK PATA (currently not connected)
    HDD1: Hitachi HDT725032VLA360 320GB SATA
HDD2: Maxtor 7L250R0 250GB PATA (currently not connected)
Internal memory card reader: Owltech FA405MX3(B)
     - connected directly to USB header on motherboard
I also have a USB mouse, PS/2 keyboard, Wacom tablet, and a USB external hard drive all currently attached to the system.  I have 2 case fans (80mm and a 120mm) to go along with a stock Intel CPU fan and a small 45mm fan for the Northbridge.
    No overclocking on the system
    Now, the story:
I've been having false start ever since I put the system together.  After reading a few of the threads, I tried a variety of different things like re-seating the CPU, re-seating the motherboard, re-seating the video card (the only card currently in the system), unplugging / plugging the power connectors on the board...  But not seemed to stop the false starts.  I did, however, find out that the false starts only occurred when completely switching the power off on the PSU.  I have a power strip and I usually shut my system down completely and then turn the main switch off on the strip.  One day I happened to forget turning the power strip off and when I went to start the system up, no false start.
Now, fast forward to this morning.  I had (yes, had) an Enermax Liberty 620 Watt PSU in the system.  I had turned off the main switch on the power strip so I turned that on, then hit the power switch on the case.
    POP
I saw a bright flash near the PSU and the system went dead.  I immediately switched off the switch on the power strip and opened up the case.  I could smell burned metal.  I removed the PSU and took a peak through the grating and I could see that something inside blew-up.  The system was running fine (outside of the false starts) for three weeks.
Fortunately, I had an old Antec True430 PSU lying around so I just plugged that in and everything seems to be working (again, except for the false starts).  I did remove DVD2 and HDD2 to lower the power load just in case.
    My questions:
    - Are the false start a common occurrence with this motherboard?
    - Has there been an official explanation from MSI as to why they happen?
    - Could the false starts have been a cause for the PSU to finally blow after two weeks?
    - Is it not good to turn off the main switch on the power strip?  In other words, is it best to keep the PSU powered?
    - Is there an actual fix to stop false start altogether?
I would really appreciate any and all feedback.  I'm really stumped (and bitter) about the PSU blowing.  I'm going to try and see if the warranty covers this incident.

Quote from: Quadrifoglio Verde on 29-April-07, 00:38:06
(I'm not convinced however that any Liberty could be rated as a good PSU)
Hmm...  Before forking over the money, I did read a handful of reviews.  I think these are the ones I read:
    ExtremeOverclocking.com
    ViperLair.com
    Bjorn3d.com
    Phoronix.com
    XSReviews.co.uk
    SilentPCReview.com
    guru3d.com
    TweakTown.com
    HotHardware.com
    ThinkComputers.org
The guy at the store I bought it from also assured me that it was a solid PSU.  Maybe not the best on the market, but enough for what my system required.  In any case, I don't really want to turn this thread into a PSU discussion (even though I probably do need a refresher course).  We can save that one for another day.
Back to the original subject (my apologies for digressing)...
I'm guessing there hasn't been any sort of official word from MSI regarding this false restart problem?

  • Raid 0 on P965 Platinum

    Hi
    First post for me
I have the following and need to configure a raid; would someone help me?:
    Intel core2duo 6400
    Msi p965 platinum
    (2) Sata II 250gb HDD´s 16 m buffer
    (1) sata II 80gb HDD 16m buffer (I got this one as system drive)
    2 g GSKILL ddr2 800 ram
I do not know the basics to configur the raid
I will use the pc to work audio (Nuendo, Reason, Kontakt, etc) and video (combustion, etc(HDV)) so I thought I was going to need speed on my drives.
    well Thanks
    Modiolo

    Hi!
Configuring RAID is very easy. Just do as the manual tells you to.
I can copy the manual here now, but that doesn't seem useful. Get your manual >> here << and look up page C-2. There you can find how to configurre RAID. Enter the RAID ROM by hitting Ctrl+I when POST screen appears at system startup.
The rest seems pretty clear to me. If you can't figure out what to do, just ask, okay?
You want speed, then you want a RAID-0 made with your two largest hard drives.
I advice you to install Windows on the smaller disk.
    Just a few remarks:
    - when building RAID-0, always use two disks of the same size. Not doing so will cost you storage space. The largest disk of the two will be reduced to the size of the smaller one.
    - Don't get confused by disks, partitions and RAID-arrays. In short:
One RAID-0 array made out of 2 disks form one large disk. (2x80GB makes 1 160GB disk). This disk can be split up into 4 partitions of 40GB each, or in smaller partitions, whatever you want. The system simply "sees" the RAID-array as one physical disk only.
    - When installing Windows, you probably need to hit F6 at Windows Setup start to install a driver to be able to use your SATA-disks.
Now, just give it a try. It's really not very hard.
    Good luck!

  • P965 Platimium Correct SATA/IDE Bios Settings

Hi I have finshed building my sons computer and loaded Windows xp Pro twice (first time I didn't load the intel raid drivers so the SATA drive wasn't recognised except in IDE mode).
I have run Sandra to get details of the drives etc and check the windows manager to see what drivers are being used for the hard drive and DVDRW drive
The Samsung drive is using the Intel Raid drivers (checked via device manager) and is reported as being in UDMA 6 (although UDMA 7 is supported reported via Sandra). Speed tests of the hard drive seem to match the standard SATA 300 drive held in Sandra data base.
The DVD is using the standard windows IDE drives in single and dual mode. It is not using the Intel drivers.
I tried fiddling with the BIOS trying different settings in the integrated peripherals menu and here are the results for the different sub menus:
Please can someone tell me what should the correct bios settings be for 1 no. SATA 300 hard drive and 1 no.  IDE DVDROM and what drivers ideally should windows being using. The various RAID and IDE settings are very confusing.
    Thanks in advance

One of the features of AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is Native Command Queuing (NCQ). This allows ATA drives to accept more than one command at a time and reorder commands for efficiency. The reason there is some interest in getting this setup is because it supposedly increases performance. How much of an increase I don't know. I have AHCI setup in the BIOS and Vista installed fine. I read you also need the Intel Storage Matrix drivers but I'm not sure if this just applies to XP or VISTA too; in any case I never installed them. One adverse affect of changing AHCI in the BIOS having already installed XP with no AHCI is that it will not boot afterwards. I wish somebody would weigh in on this issue and give us some good advice on best practices so we can all take full advantage of SATA.
Intel Matrix Storage drivers in AHCI mode will make the hard drives perform a little bit better, but not because of NCQ (on a single user system and OS that is). On most hard drives NCQ will cause performance to go down by a couple percent...

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards

Since you have 3 PATA devices you have to use Native mode.  The Native settings given by NovJoe are for booting from a PATA drive. If you decided to use the SATA drive, change SATA only to PATA only and make sure both PATA Keep Enabled and SATA Keep Enabled are set to Yes
