P965 Platinum Limited - RAM Timing issue (Corsair 6400C4)

I have 2Gigs of the Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 RAM running on my P965 Platinum Limited. The RAM is rated to run at 4-4-4-12 timings at 2.1v. SPD defaults to something like 5-5-5-18. I've run several passes of Memtest on these sticks, both pass with no issues.
Now, here is what happens: when I manually set the timings in the BIOS to 4-4-4-12 (up to 2.1v), I have issues coming out of standby. Infact, it only half wakes up, Windows never pops and my monitor remains in a sleep state (yes, I've tried changing the setting for this in the BIOS). The thing that really stands out to me is that regardless of the utility I use to check this, when I set the timings to 4-4-4-12, they all report 3-4-4-12 in Windows. I even checked the 1.51 beta BIOS that popped up last week, its still the same. Setting it to 4-4-4-12 in the BIOS gives reports of 3-4-4-12 in Windows, and I still have the standby issues.
I've done some poking around, and it sounds like this has popped up on the P965 Neo boards as well. I figured I'd throw this up here, see what kind of responses and feedback I can get on this issue. Is it my board, or is it the board, ya know?

Duke Togo, can you publish your full spec? (please read the moan guide, link at my signature)
try set 5-4-4-12, will you get 4-4-4-12?
No, it comes up as 5-4-4-12. The problem only seems to be with 4 coming up as 3.

  • P965 Platinum Limited Start Up Beeps/USB problem

    P965 Platinum Limited Edition
I have 5 USB devices plugged into my PC: my Printer and Webcam in the USB Ports next to the Lan Jack, my Mouse and Keyboard in the USB Port below those, and my microphone in the D-bracket 2 Connecter USB Port (JDB1).
With just the keyboard and mouse plugged in, I get the 2 (high) beeps at startup. With the two cables plugged into the port next to the Lan Jack, I get 2 low and 2 high beeps. With the other cable plugged into the D-Bracket port, I get 2 low, 2 high, and 1 low beep. You can see the pattern there. If I pull out the two cables next to the Lan Jack and leave in the one in the D-Bracket port, I get 2 high and 1 low beep.
Anyone have any idea what any of this means? (without listing post beep codes tables, I've been there, done that)

I stumbled across something online that made it sound like this was standard behavior for MSI boards? Basically announcing USB connections. My last two MSI boards did not do this, and I'd really like to make sure I don't have something else going on.

  • P965 Platinum 4GB RAM - where's my DDR2-800 ???

The manual states you can run DDR2-800 with 4GB RAM.  Using some top notch G.Skill memory that got awesome
reviews on newegg.  But it just won't run at DDR2-800.  Won't even boot, beep, or anything.  I have 4x 1GB modules.
When they say 4GB at DDR2-800, do they mean 2x 2GB modules or something?  Oh, and I did check all the latencies
and voltages.  Worked like a charm with just 2x 1GB modules.  Overclocked that to DDR2-1033 with just an additional
0.1V overvolt, and no change to latencies.  ???

I haven't tried doing the mix and match thing.  I should try that.  I'll do it tonight when I get home.  The modules are G.Skill model F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ.  Search newegg for N82E16820231065.  My bios version is the latest 1.4.  The specified voltage for these modules is 2.1V.  So I overvolted them to 2.2V previously.  During this test, the system is NOT overclocked or overvolted.  System will boot with DDR2-667 and seems to be stable.  But the manuals says that is only when you have 8GB of ram.  Again, DDR2-800 just doesn't work.  Power light comes on and fans spin, but other than that, system appears to be completely dead.  Monitors won't even come out of standby.

  • HD2900XT confuses P965 Platinum (Limited Edition) BIOS

My system is otherwise stable, but when I plugged in my new HD2900XT Vid card, the board no longer can boot from the Vista CD (Also tried the XP CD and also fails, however it can boot Acronis True Image...). I set my boot sequence to CD first, hit F11 to choose boot device etc... No help. Anyone else had this problem before?
Contacted ATI but their support team is baffled. I am wondering if its a BIOS problem. Want to try flashing it before RMAing the card. However I dont have a floppy drive and really dont want to get one. Is there a way to flash the BIOS without a floppy on MSI boards?

  • P965 Platinum on-board sound issue

I can get sound out fine through the headphone port (on the front panel) of my PC but when I plug my speakers/headphones into the line out on the rear, it comes out very faintly and only through the right channel.  This happens under both Windows and Linux (Ubuntu).  I do have a Creative X-Fi PCI card too (which works fine under Windows but not under Ubuntu  ).  Any suggestions?  Do I just have a duff board...?

No luck    Tried the jumpers on pins 9&10 and 5&6 (as I eventually found in my paper manual but not in the online version!).  It's still only coming out through the right channel on both Windows and Linux (even on the SPDIF).  I know my speakers are fine since they work no probs through my X-Fi card.  It's looking more and more like a mobo fault, no?  Anybody have any other suggestions?
    Cheers...

  • P965 Platinum Won't Start

    My setup is:
    MSI P965 Platinum Limited
    Core 2 Duo E6600
    Patriot 2x1GB DDR2-800 (4-4-4-12)
    BFG GeForce 8800GTS 320MB OC
    Antec True Power 2.0 380W 3.3V/28A 5V/35A 12V/16A
    WD 2x 150GB SATA1.5
The mobo, the cpu, the ram and the vid card are all new.
Everything connected, when I turn the PSU on, and hit the switch, nothing happens; no fans turn on, or otherwise. I've tested the external cable to be fine, as well as any wall sockets.
To make sure it wasn't my PSU, I tried plugging the ATX 24pin into my old mobo, which is a 20pin, along with the ATX 4pin and my PSU turned on fine, as well as my old cpu fan, etc. When I left the ATX 4pin on the P965, my new cpu fan lit up as well as half my peripherals (ata dvd burner, but not slave ata dvd rom; graphics card fan also did not turn on despite the ATX 6pin plugged into the card).
I read the manual suggested a 450W PSU, is it that my current PSU doesn't have enough juice to start up my system? Or worse, is it possible the ATX 24pin slot is damaged?
    Thanks.

Long discussion, which one is better. Fact is that not too many brands produce single rail PSU's anymore, and many stores don't even sell single rail PSU's. So you might be limited in your choice.
But to answer your questions: yes, single rail is better. However, some newer dual rail PSU's are capable of outperforming some older single rail PSU's. You can not use the combined 12v current on one rail, each rail is limited to around 20A.
If each rail is limited to 20A, will this be enough for the graphics card? As was stated earlier, the BFG site suggests 12V/28A for nominal usage.
(If it makes a difference, I have no real intention to overclock anything on this system.)

  • Weird problem P965 Platinum (Solved)

This is my first post, so helo to everybody.
I bought a P965 Platinum board a week ago. Yesterday I decided to update to v1.1 bios which I downloaded from the Global Site (latest version). Since then I have a very weird problem. My keyboard does not work unless it goes into Windows. I tried 2 different PS2 and another 2 USB keyboards but the problem is the same. Before then everything was OK (e.g. I entered numerous times into the bios in order to manage to install the XP SP2 onto a raid0 configuration!). Any suggestions (except from just wait for a new bios release)?
P.S. I searched for similar topics before I post but found nothing similar. Thanks in advance

I had the exact same problem with my keyboards / P965 Platinum, although mine started when I used partition magic to resize my windows partition.
No keyboards (usb or ps/2, didn't matter) would activate until halfway through the windows load screen, making it impossible to change boot order, get into bios, etc.
Was seriously a very scary problem.
Did exactly as BOSSKILLER suggested.  Updated bios to latest version 1.4 within windows using live update.  Turned off machine.  Unplugged power cord.  Cleared CMOS.  Booted, (keyboard worked! :D) got into bios, loaded defaults.  Rebooted into bios, reset all of my settings and presto!  Perfect again.
Thank you guys so much.  This helped immensely.  I was not looking forward to taking apart my new machine to send in the motherboard for service at all.

If enabling EIST would cause OC unstable, that means this OC setting is unstable after all. What EIST does is to reduce the multiplier back to 6x during idle, it also set the CPU Core Voltage LOWER.
I don't have this P965 Platinum board to test out, the temperature thing definitely can be fixed, by next BIOS release hopefully. Del UK, did E6600 temp. report correctly?
    Hi Maesus,
Yes, temps reported ok with E6600 and speedstep could enabled and disabled.  Could see difference from standard to OCing at 3.4Ghz.
Had similar issues with Prescott on the PT880 Version 1 when that came out and was solved with a few bios updates.....
I did go and check the Intel spex for P965 chipset and that states max FSB of 1066.  In theory the P965, do not support the 1333 FSB.
I have emailed support and know could be a few days for reply....... not long
Other replies, thanks it all helps and I do try them out.

  • MSI P965 Platinum networking issues

Hi there. I'm having a really annoying issue with my dsl connection. It started 2 months ago and I didn't find a solution yet. 4 months ago I've built a new pc with vista ultimate 64bit. 2-3 weeks later on, this strange problem with my internet connection came up. Even thought I was currently connected, I couldn't access the internet at all. In the 'network & sharing centre there were 2 networks: Local Area Connection & Unidentified Network. At the begining, by disabling my connection and enabling it again the problem was resolved. But later on, having this problem again and again, disabling and enabling the connection didn't work. I also switched off the dsl modem but it didn't work either. I even unistalled/reinstalled & updated my ethernet card drivers but with no luck. So the only way to get my connection working was to format and do a fresh installation of vista. I'm suspecting the realtek ethernet. I'm still having this issue and I really can't affort of doing another format. A friend of mine has the same mobo and vista ultimate 64bit but he never had such a problem. Any suggestions?
    My computer specs:
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
MSI P965 Platinum (ethernet card: realtek)
    Intel Core 2 duo E6700
    MSI 8800GTX OC Edition
    2gb DDR2-800mhz Super Talent
    Corsair 620W SLI Ready
    adsl modem b-focus

I think this is due to configurations of your modem and your network card.
You can give your friend a trial with your DSL modem and see if the problem exist.

  • P965 Platinum-RAM Frequency

I have already installed E6550 and a RAM stick of Kingston 800Mhz...BIOS set RAM value at 832 Mhz automatically. Why this happen? Can i do something
to set Ram value at 800Mhz? Will i face stability problems if ram running at 832 Mhz?
    Board: P965 Platinum (BIOS ver1.5)
    CPU:E6550 2.33Mhz FSB 1333
RAM: Kingston Value Ram 800 Mhz CL5

Looks like the BIOS is not able to offer a proper FSB/DRAM ratio to set your RAM to 800 MHz when a CPU that operates at 333 MHZ FSB is installed. It still only has the "older" ratios for CPUs with 266 MHz.
As far as I understand it, the BIOS only offers two ratios in the 800 MHz range: 1:1 and 1:1.25.
It automatically chooses the latter.  That is why your RAM operates at 832 MHz:
    1.25 x 333 MHz ~ 416 MHz (~832 MHz DDR2)
The only alternative you have tight now would be to choose a ratio of 1:1:
    1 x 333 MHz = 333 MHz (~667 MHz DDR2)
The divider that needs to be implemented in an upcoming BIOS would be 1:1.20:
    1.20 x 333 MHz ~ 400 MHz [~800 MHz DDR2]
If you don't have any stability issues you may as well live with 832 MHz DDR2 speed and be happy with the little performance bonus.
Otherwise, wait for a BIOS fix.

  • MSI P965 Platinum with E6700 - what ram (Mem) ?

    Hi.
    I have a P965 Platinum board with a Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU on and 2x 512MB Kingston PC2-5300 Dual channel 667 mem.
But i can see the board support PC2-6400 Dual channel 800Mhz mem also. That would be better than the 667Mhz PC2-5300 mem, right ? maybe a stupid question, but i'm preatty new to PC.
And if yes. witch 1GB Dual channel PC2-6400 would be good for this board together with the DC2 cpu.
    i was thinking of these :  OCZ Gold GX XTC Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 5-5-5-12 - or OCZ Platinum XTC Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 4-5-4-15 - or OCZ Special Ops Edition Series Kit - 2x1024 MB, PC2-6400 DDR2-800, CAS 5-5-5-12 -
Tell me witch of these best suit my system..

  • Ram placement - p965 Platinum

I have 2 pairs of ram. 4 sticks of 1g each, total 4g. to go into a new P965 Platinum mb. And the manual is not clear very clear on this since they are all the same size.
Should I split the first pair up and put 1 stick in DIMM1(green) the other in DIMM3(orange), and then split the other pair up and put 1 is DIMM2(green) and the other in DIMM4(orange)?
    Or
Put them in sequential order – the first pair in DIMM1+2(green) and the other pair in DIMM3+4(orange)?
    Or
    Does it matter?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Hi, you should put as DIMM 1 + DIMM 3, or DIMM 2 + DIMM 4 for synchronous dual channel capability. But once you popular all 4 DIMMs, as long as the DIMMs are identical, you should also have sync dual channel mode running.

  • GFX card has died, what new cards will my P965 Platinum support?

Good morning all. As the topic says, my gfx card has died. It was a Gainward 8800GTS 320mg, and fell foul of the apparently common solder issue. It's way out of warranty now, so i need a new card. I can't afford a full upgrade, so i need to find a card that will run on my P965 Platinum. The 3 cards that i'm considering are the nVidia 550Ti, the ATI 6790, and most of all the ATI 6850. Will they all work, but primarily will the 6850 work on the P965, or will I have issues due to it being an ATI card?
    My hardware specs are:
P965 Platinum, running the stock BIOS (i assume, i have never flashed it).
Intel E6600 dual core, running at stock speed.
    4 sticks of Corsair xms2 "cm3x1024-6400c4" 4-4-4-12 800mhz DDR2 ram, at stock settings.
Corsair HX620W PSU. I can't check exactly what it's running at as the gpu is dead, but the manual says:
    +3.3V 24A 170W
    +5V 30A 170W
    +12V1 18A 600W
    +12V2 18A 600W
    +12V3 18A 600W
    -12V 0.8A 9.6W
    +5VSB 3A 15W
    WD Raptor system drive.
As a secondary question, what E and Q chips can the Platinum take, preferably without a BIOS update? The main MSI website no longer has the 965 specs available and my manual is nowhere to be found.
Thank you very much for any help that you can provide.
edit: sorry, forgot to mention that i'm running XP SP2 (32bit i think), and have no intention of ever having 2 gfx cards so crossfire/SLI isn't an issue for me. Upgrading to 64bit win7 is no trouble if that's necessary/advised.

  • P965 Platinum memory latency settings problem

When I overclock the FSB of my P965 Platinum with C2D E6400, I get problems with the memory latecy settings. My memory is specified as 667MHz 5-5-5-15 2T, but when I enter these latencies in the bios, CPU-Z and Sandra both say I have 3-5-5-15 1T. Which is of course out of spec and gives system instability unless I raise the memory voltage quite a bit above spec.
So does anyone have an idea why this might be? Is it a bug of the bios (ver 1.3) or are CPU-Z and Sandra both mis-reporting the value? In the latter case, why can I get rid of the instability by raising ram voltage??
    Thanks for any help
    /Mattias
PS The disable speedspep switch in the bios dosn't seem to have any effect. The multiplier still switches down from 8 to 6 when the CPU is idle. Anyone elso who has the same problem?

The CAS Latency issue is known and it is possibly being addressed by MSI technicians. Please refer to this thread, CAS Latency is in the list of desired fixes for a new BIOS release. For the time being, switch memory timing to SPD instead of Manual in your BIOS and it should be set to CAS Latency 5...
Memory voltage: at certain settings memory chips require a certain amount of power. The default voltage for DDR2 is 1.9v, so in other words DDR2-667 5-5-5-15 is the best your memory chips can do at the default DDR2 voltage, that's why your memory is rated as it is. Raising the voltage enables you to run above rated speed, you simply let the memory chips use more power. There are limits of course...
Disable Speedstep: please refer to this thread, should help you disable Speedstep.
