P965 Platinum Problems

Wow, who does not have problems with this board, I wish I would of read up more before buying it. I have one SATA HDD connected to one purple SATA slot, and one IDE DVD-ROM connected to the only IDE controller. If I plug the SATA drive in the blue slot, I get no POST. But the BIOS does no recognize my HDD at all. If I set Onboard RAID controller to IDE then it will recognize my DVD-ROM (thats the only way I have found to do so) but it apparently recognizes it as a RAID drive and jmicron tells me that it is there on start-up. I have no OS because I can't get my harddrive to even remotely be recognized. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!,
Mike

Hi,
After playing with my board I found appriopiate SATA/IDE bios settings. Read it here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=104136.0

  • Q9550 cpu and p965 platinum problem

I have P965 platinum m/b with 1.8 bios. The old CPU is E6400. I just tried to instal Q9550. PC starts but stack at MSI logo. Any ideas?
    EDIT: 1+3 led are  red

    Hello,
which Revision of the Q9550 are you using?
The CPU Support List only includes the Q9550/C1 [sSpec number = SLAWQ].  If you have the Q9550/E0 you have a CPU Support problem.  That processor is not included in the CPU Support list.  It requires a MicroCode-Update and currently the latest BIOS for your Board is v1.80 which does not include such an update.

  • DVD Burner problem with P965 Platinum

I have had on going issue with my DVD burner. When i try to play or esp burn a DVD the whole PC slows down and i am unable to open or run any other applications.  The Burner is connected via IDE cable and i have tried 2 other DVD Burners with all the same result.  When i play a DVD the picture jitters and when i burn a DVD the burn rate is about 10 x slower than my other PC.  It comes across as if there is a data transfer problem, not sure though.
Could this be a bios issue or maybe a faulty IDE port on the MOB ???
    My system
    MSI P965 Platinum
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    2 x 1GB DDR2 800mhz RAM
    Leadtek 8800GTS 640mb G/C
    W.D SATA II 320GB HDD
    ASUS DRW-1612BL DVD Burner

I would also like to add that, this fix has also fixed my Lan input port.  I built this PC about 3 weeks ago and from day one the Lan connection would come up with that "Limited or no connectivity" issue.  So I thought it was a faulty Lan port so I went and bought a PCI Lan card to fix that issue.
But as soon as i applied this fix, I noticed the network connection popped up so I tried it out and the damn thing now works.
    Extremely Happy
    cheers

  • P965 Platinum booting problems

    Hi all,
I have a serious problems with stability of my system. It seems to behave pretty randomly. Every now and then when the power button is pressed the system seems to start booting up for 2-3 seconds, then suddenly turns off and re-boots again. If everything goes ok windows is loaded and sysem is pretty much stable. However every one in five booting attempts ends up with system trying to boot a couple of times, getting on and off constantly so there is not even a chance o get to BIOS. After some time the POST screen shows up saying that an overclocking attempt has failed and system will be restored to te defaults. The story is that there has never been an overclocking attempt whatsoever since I can not get he system running stable at stock settings!!! Anyway, I get finally to BIOS but sometimes next restart of the system occurs and the story is all over again. When I finally get to the settings and restore the defaults the system will reboot alright and for the next couple of times it will turn on normally untill the next doggy start forces me to get to the BIOS and start al over again. Initially I thought that this is due to the fact that the memory runs at 667MHz(2x333MHz) when the FSB is set to 266MHz - FSB:DRAM 4:5. I changed it manually to 533MHz (FSB:DRAM 1:1) but the problem did no vanish. I also tried different memory timings set manualy and by SPD but it also failed. At this stage I used up all my ideas and really do not know what to do know. The memory I have is pluged in in slots 1 and 3 for dual channel operation.
I bought this motheroard to get fast and stable system that will not failed during week-long simulations and I'm very dissapointed with what I got so far. Below are my system specs:
    Intel E6300
    MSI P965 Platinum
    Corsair 2x1024 PC 5300 matched
    NorthQ 4001 400W PSU
    Gainward GeForce 7300GT
    WD SATA 250 GB
    NEC DVD-RW AD 7173
    Windows XP Pro SP2
I hope somebody can help me or at least give me a hint where to look for solution.
    Thanks

the only way I have no problem with this mobo is putting ddr moules in slot 3 and 4 (no dual channel)

  • P965 PLATINUM / REALTEK network adapter connectivity problem

    hi,
I cannot connect my PC with my laptop using a crossover ethernet cable. All of the crossover cables I have tested operate as expected when used to connect other computers. A fact that complicates things more is that the connection status is indicated as "connected" in the network connections window but no packets are received at all.
    My configuration:
MSI P965 PLATINUM (flashed with v1.2 BIOS)
    OS: Windows XP PRO SP2
    REALTEK driver version: 5.654.721.2006
Network IP, mask and gateway are manually assigned.
Note1: The network adapter works totally fine when connected with my router using a straight UTP cable.
Note2: My brother's PC (which has exactly the same configuration as mine) has the same problem.
    Thanks in advance

Thank you all for your tips.
Please note that network file sharing is enabled. If I use my ADSL router as a gateway (it is 192.168.1.1 as you can see in the ipconfig commands output) the computers do communicate.
Problems arise when I use a crossover or straight cable to connect directly my desktop and laptop. Some things I have tried:
    - I have disabled the firewalls on all computers.
    - If I ping the localhost (127.0.0.1) I get packet replies. However, when I ping the other host I get timeouts.
    - I have set the connection speed manually from the device manager to 100mbit/full. Still no good..  :(

Is there any utility to check my network adapters? It is a VERY weird situation, because on both adapters the green light is constantly ON, and the orange flashes from time to time. I assume this means that on hardware level everything is fine. Moreover, I cannot believe that there is a firewall/AV that interferes, because even if I shut them down, I still can't ping the other host.
    Thanks in advance

  • Msi P965 Platinum with Vista Premium 64bit big problem

hi i cant run vista properly, i get blue screen dumps that dumps memory.
Some time it can run 5min sometimes 2hours
Vista says that there is a hardware incompatiblity something with memory.
I have run memtest x86 it passed, and Vistas memtest fail.
tryed to run with only one memory and changed place to them
core duo center doesent work either.
now i run windows Xp with latest drivers and everything works just fine.
I want to run my computer on windows vista 64bit, whats my problem

Sad to hear about those problems, especially since I am going to upgrade to Vista myself in the nearest future.
I have no guarantee that this will work, but try using manual settings for RAM. And set RAM to 5-5-5-15, not 4-4-4-12. And run RAM at stock speed, and the same goes for FSB etc.
And try using 2,1V for the RAM.
If you have runned on manual settings, set the to "Auto" if you haven't tried that.
I have read abuot one guy that got bluescreens all the time when he overclocked in Vista. You haven't overclocked, have you? :P
EDIT: I see you use BIOS v1.3. Try flashing to v1.2.
I flashed from a bluescreenfree system at high overclocks (v1.2), to a instable system vith plenty of bluescreens when exeding 340-350FSB.
With BIOS 1.2, I have booted with FSB 389, and been able to run SuperPI, CPU-Z and some other small programs. Now, with BIOS 1.3, I can't get into windows, get bluescreen before logon is complete.
I think there is something "wrong" with the northbrigde in P965 Platinum, because the errors are allways memory related.

  • P965 Platinum and Realtek RTL8111B problem

I have a dual boot setup on my computer:  Windows XP and Fedora 7 Linux.
After booting Windows XP I will have to COMPLETELY UNPLUG the power supply from my computer before booting to Fedora 7 Linux.  The reason:  If I simply reboot or turn off the computer (simply turning off does not remove the power from the mainboard), then the Realtek RTL8111B onboard LAN is left in a state which prevents Fedora 7 Linux from being able to use the LAN.  Fedora simply reports the LAN is not available.  The solution, which I find unacceptable, is to completely turn off the Realtek RTL8111B on the P965 Platinum and use an old Realtek 8129 PCI network board.
A better solution would be for the MSI BIOS to reset all of the Realtek RTL8111B LAN chipset's bits to a valid state so that Fedora 7 Linux would be able to properly recognize and use the onboard LAN.
Again, if I COMPLETELY UNPLUG my computer's power supply Fedora 7 Linux always finds and uses the onboard LAN.  It is only after using Windows XP and rebooting to Fedora 7 Linux without completely unplugging the power supply first that there is a problem.  This would seem to indicate the MSI BIOS is not resetting the Realtek RTL8111B onboard LAN chipset to a clean state when it initializes the system upon booting.
I am using MSI P965 Platinum BIOS version 1.4

Uhm, I'm having exactly the same issue under linux.
The router's led will stay off and it looks like there was no network cable connected (Realtek Ethernet controllers are insmod'ed and everything looks fine).
The only thing I haven't tried is unplugging the power supply's cable ... weird.
I'm also upset about this problem  >:(

  • P965 Platinum ethernet driver problems Vista 32bit

    Hi there.
    I have some serious problems.
I got a MSI P965 Platinum Mainboard a few days ago. Installing everything form start using Vista Home Premium 32bit. The included CD does not contain drivers for Vista, but Vista found almost everything, except Firewire and the onboard Ethernet controler.
Beside the Mainboard, only a PCIex16 VGA card (Expert Vision 8500GT Super) is connected to the board.
Got the driver for the Ethernet controler at MSI´s homepage for Vista32 bit, BUT!
Everytime I try to install it, I end up with an errorcode 10 (device fail to start).
The Mainboard arrived with firmware 1.3 I just upgraded to 1.4 - Still same result.

  • P965 Platinum memory latency settings problem

When I overclock the FSB of my P965 Platinum with C2D E6400, I get problems with the memory latecy settings. My memory is specified as 667MHz 5-5-5-15 2T, but when I enter these latencies in the bios, CPU-Z and Sandra both say I have 3-5-5-15 1T. Which is of course out of spec and gives system instability unless I raise the memory voltage quite a bit above spec.
So does anyone have an idea why this might be? Is it a bug of the bios (ver 1.3) or are CPU-Z and Sandra both mis-reporting the value? In the latter case, why can I get rid of the instability by raising ram voltage??
    Thanks for any help
    /Mattias
PS The disable speedspep switch in the bios dosn't seem to have any effect. The multiplier still switches down from 8 to 6 when the CPU is idle. Anyone elso who has the same problem?

The CAS Latency issue is known and it is possibly being addressed by MSI technicians. Please refer to this thread, CAS Latency is in the list of desired fixes for a new BIOS release. For the time being, switch memory timing to SPD instead of Manual in your BIOS and it should be set to CAS Latency 5...
Memory voltage: at certain settings memory chips require a certain amount of power. The default voltage for DDR2 is 1.9v, so in other words DDR2-667 5-5-5-15 is the best your memory chips can do at the default DDR2 voltage, that's why your memory is rated as it is. Raising the voltage enables you to run above rated speed, you simply let the memory chips use more power. There are limits of course...
Disable Speedstep: please refer to this thread, should help you disable Speedstep.

  • P965 Platinum shutdown and driver problem.

    Hi all.
I purchased the P965 Platinum a few days ago, and I got two problems.
    1.
My computer will not turn off the power when shutting down. I got the message: "It's now safe to turn of the power"
    2.
In Device Manager i got a "!" in front of the "Intel(R) ICH8 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 283F.
I got the latest inf-files and latest BIOS.
    Anyone got a solution?
    Cheers...

Changing the HAL made my computer freeze and operate very unstable.
But I've reinstalled XP and NOW IT WORKS!!!! YEAH!!!
My computer is recognized as an ACPI Multiprocessor PC, and there are no errors in the system device section.
It must have been the flashing of the BIOS that did the trick.
Thanks for all your answers guys.
I'll go back to loving my new computer now..

  • P965 Platinum/Realtek RTL8111 Connectivity Problems

I have a P965 Platinum that has the on board Realtek RTL8111.  I have had it since Dec '06.  I have the latest Win Xp.  Driver 5.658.814.2006.  From the beginning I have had connectivity problems.  I have stripped the motherboard of all non-essential components and I have installed XP multiple times.
Almost every time I boot up, and windows comes up, I get a Limited or No Connectivity error.  Notice I said 'almost' every time.  Sometimes I get connected right away.  I thought it might be a loose cord, and noticed that the left LED on the back of the LAN jack was blinking.  Which according to the manual means that it is talking.  I wiggled the cable around to see if it was a bad connection, nothing.  Then I replaced it and I connected.  Unfortunately when rebooted, it wasn't connected again.  After trial and error, I soon realized that by unplugging and re plugging the cable back in I could eventually get it to connect, which it eventually did every time.  Bad connection right?  Now here is the weird part, if I disable and enable the local area connection under Network Connections in windows enough times eventually it connects!  Here is exactly what I do:  First I disable it and then enable it again.  If it takes more than a couple of seconds trying to connect, I know it will fail.  So I keep doing it until it works.  I thought it was a BIOS or driver issue and being such a new board I thought I should just wait.  No other computer of mine has this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Have you tried using another cable to rule out the possibility that your cable is bad?
Yes, I tried a new cable.  Same effect.  Now of my other computers have problems with the cable or connection.

Have you tried the updated Realtek drivers from MSI (5.664.0205.2007)? Dated 2007-04-20
                        HERE
Yes, I tried those drivers which are also on the Realtek website.  The funny thing is that it connected the first time!  Unfortunately when I tried it again (reboot and restart) it did not connect.   So the driver upgrade did not fix the problem.

  • Power problems... P965 Platinum

So I updated my system with new motherboard and CPU.
Case: Sonata Antec II Piano with Smartpower 2.0 450W
    Motherboard: P965 Platinum
    CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600
    MEM: 1x 1GB 800MHz
I was short of money that's why I only bought certain new parts.
After installing the mobo and CPU, I plugged in the main power cord to the PSU and switched the power on from PSU (but not from the power button on the case) and the case and cpu fan started spinning and the DVD-drive can be opened and closed. Now this is weird as the computer is not on yet. When I do press the power button, the leds indicates that the system is on but nothing happens (the fans and dvd-drive are still working). So I think there is bad cabling etc.
I tried re-installing everything but the same thing happens again. Now I have only the CPU + heat sink, graphics card (geforce 7300), RAM and the D-bracket installed.
    The cabling goes like this:
the 24-pin power is plugged to JPWR1
the 4-pin power is plugged  to JPWR2
the 4-pin power is plugged to JPWR3
the reset switch, power switch and  hdd led are plugged in to JFP1
the speaker and power led is plugged into JFP2
the D-Bracket is plugged into JDB1
So does anyone have ideas why the fans start spinning when I switch the power on from the PSU switch? Have I missed something I need to do in order to make the system work? I've done everything exactly like the manuals tells me to do (I'm writing this from school, so I do not have access to the system, hopefully I remember the cabling correctly).
    thx

    > hmm.... did you save the BIOS settings before?
Nope, I'm not able to save the BIOS Settings at all. No matter what the settings are (Defaults, modified,...), After saving the settings, the computer just won't boot. I need to clear CMOS in order to get back into BIOS after saving the settings.
I think this might be caused by the fact that it saves the FSB to 266MHz (1066MHz) (during boot it displays the message that "266mhz system bus processor is not supported <....> System will use reduced 133MHz bus instead.) So after saving the settings (and FSB to 266MHz), the system is unable to boot. I cannot change the value to 133MHz from BIOS (this is what I tried, so that I would be able to test if the FSB setting is the one that makes it impossible to boot after saving BIOS settings), it can be only between 200-500MHz.
I'll test more powerful / other PSU in couple of days, MSI's support suggested that. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

    thermaltake pure power 460w

Would much appreciate some help if anyone is familiar with this issue!
I'm having a very difficult time getting the the 965 Platinum to recognize my IDE devices, and I don't know why. I've got a Sony DRU-500A DVD burner in the master position, and a Maxtor 6L300R0 hard drive in the slave position. The jumpers on those devices are appropriate for their position. The devices are "usuable", that is, I've been able to run the Windows XP installer (up to a point) and writes have occured to my hard drive, but the installation fails after the portion where you reboot after all the files have been written from the install disk.
In any case, the Standard CMOS screen simply never shows any devices detected on either the IDE Primary Master or Slave entries. I've tried disconnecting the DVD drive and just connecting the Hard Drive as master instead with no improvment. I've also tried disabling the SATA configurations, toggling PCI IDE Busmastering. Nothing works.
I've never been able to boot into Windows.
There was a point where the JMicron Raid menu showed this drive as a raid drive for reasons that aren't clear to me (the drive may have been a raid drive in the past). I've set the drive back to non-raid, rebooted back into my old system and everything checks out. No problems at all, so I think that there are any RAID issues.
I'm not a pro at building systems, so there could be user error anywhere alonog the way.
    Any ideas? I'm bamboozled!

  • Weird problem P965 Platinum (Solved)

This is my first post, so helo to everybody.
I bought a P965 Platinum board a week ago. Yesterday I decided to update to v1.1 bios which I downloaded from the Global Site (latest version). Since then I have a very weird problem. My keyboard does not work unless it goes into Windows. I tried 2 different PS2 and another 2 USB keyboards but the problem is the same. Before then everything was OK (e.g. I entered numerous times into the bios in order to manage to install the XP SP2 onto a raid0 configuration!). Any suggestions (except from just wait for a new bios release)?
P.S. I searched for similar topics before I post but found nothing similar. Thanks in advance

No keyboards (usb or ps/2, didn't matter) would activate until halfway through the windows load screen, making it impossible to change boot order, get into bios, etc.
Was seriously a very scary problem.
Did exactly as BOSSKILLER suggested.  Updated bios to latest version 1.4 within windows using live update.  Turned off machine.  Unplugged power cord.  Cleared CMOS.  Booted, (keyboard worked! :D) got into bios, loaded defaults.  Rebooted into bios, reset all of my settings and presto!  Perfect again.
Thank you guys so much.  This helped immensely.  I was not looking forward to taking apart my new machine to send in the motherboard for service at all.
