P965 won't boot DVD from Intel SATA with RAID enabled

System specs
1 x MSI P965 Platinum
1 x Intel Core 2 Duo 6420
2 x 1GiB Geil PC6400 DDR2/800
2 x 320G Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
1 x Pioneer 212 SATA CD/DVD Writer
Configuration has both hdd's in RAID mode (on the ICH8 SATA connectors), with RAID volumes setup and functional.
My DVD drive is plugged into the SATA-5 connector (ICH8).
I have disabled the JMicron sata/ide (since I don't want to use it).
BIOS recognises the SATA DVD drive in the POST as an ATAPI CDROM. And an existing windows installation recognises the DVD drive.
The problem is that I cannot boot from the DVD drive. I have even tried the boot menu directly (F11) - there is a momentary flicker on the DVD drive, but after a while, booting continues from the HDD anyway.
Please help, I'm trying to install XP onto a different partition, and if I cannot boot from the optical drive, it may present some difficulties ;-)
Has anyone else had a similar issue? Or can offer any help on tuning the BIOS settings?
Regards
The Wibbler

Maesus
In my first post, I said that the DVD is plugged into the SATA-5 connector (on the ICH8), the JMicron sata connector is not used.
I also said that my configuration has 2x 320G drives configured as a RAID array (on SATA-0,SATA-1 if that matters), hence BIOS is set to "RAID" mode - if it were IDE or AHCI I would suspect my RAID array would not function (haven't tested this, but it seems logical).
If the system boots from HDD, the DVD drive (on SATA-5) is fully functional from Windows XP, just that the BIOS won't boot from the DVD drive on the ICH8.
Jack the Newbie
I have tried the JMicron SATA connector, but WinXP setup disk causes BSOD if the drive is configured as IDE in BIOS. And after some more hair pulling I figured out that if I slipstream the JMicron RAID drivers and configure the JMicron as RAID, then WinXP setup accesses the DVD correctly. Seems like a lot of hoops to be jumping through  :(

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for that reply.
I have always opened it separately from Premiere in the past.  In this instance I have some MPEG files unrelated to Premiere.
No problems during install or reinstall.  No error messages when clicking on the desktop icon.
It seems to not be part of the Cloud suite at all.
    The system is Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit with 16gb memory i7-2700K CPU @ 3.5Ghz.
Lets know if more information needed.  One thread suggested that it needs an update to pxengine (owned by Roxio) but I could not locate it at their site – it appears to be integrated into their programs, of which I have Roxio Creator 2012 installed.

  • G4 17' won't boot, flashing question mark folder with complications

I'm editing a final cut pro project, due to air on friday at noon and during conversion in compressor to dvd format, final cut quits then the computer freezes up. On a hard restart I get the flashing question mark folder.... i know what that means
I was able to boot up after a couple of tries from the os 10.4 (tiger) cd and the hard drive shows up but disk utility can't make the repair. This is the error i get:
booted with the tiger os cd and got to the disk utility. the hard drive does show up with some generic-y looking name. I try to repair the disk and get this error (in red):

so then i get the bright idea that i will change the startup disk to network drive and try to start from another drive on the network. it tries to find it then goes back to the flashing question mark. I've restarted holding the c key down with the tiger cd back in there and it is spinning but it never reads it.
any ideas? I REALLY need to salvage this film if possible.

  • Satellite L20-260 won't boot up, everytime it freezes with no reasons

    Hi all,
I've got a sad problem with my satellite, after 3-4 days I've installed a new OS (i've tried with XP SP2 and Kubuntu) system won't boot up, everytime it freezes with no reasons, the only way is to perferom a new OS installation. Could it be an hardware problem maybe related to RAM or HDD?
    10x, Daniele.

    Hi
This is not easy to say if the problem is software or hardware related.
You should install the OS from the Toshiba recovery CD and test the functionality again
If the notebook will start freezes again immediately after recovery CD installation then it could be a hardware problem.
You could try to use the MemTest 3.5 tool.
It checks the memory for malfunction.

  • My boot camp 4 won't make dvd from windows 7 iso

Help! why is the option to make install dvd from 1so file greyed out?

For some reason it doesn't see the .iso as a burnable disk or it doesn't "see" the iso at all. Is it really an .iso or did you download the .exe by mistake? The .exe can only be used while booted in Windows.
Is it an upgrade version, you need the full version for Boot Camp Assistant?
You may have to be logged as an Administrator?
You can burn it yourself first with "Disk Utility" at 2x only speed if you can't get it going.
Heres a link for more information. Here's an excerp from@Noble Seven's response:
Ok, that is wrong. To burn the iso to a disk, you first need to open the Disk Utility program, which is in the Utilities folder in Applications. If your cd is inside the computer, you should see it in the left pane. Select it. At the top, you will see the biohazard symbol that says "Burn". Select that, and find the iso file on your computer, and burn it.
    It should now work fine.
With the Retail Upgrade DVD version, (in 10.6) I could still do a clean install. I don't know if you can with a burned "Upgrade" iso image.

  • MSI P965 Platinum, system won't boot only when ICH8R is in RAID

So I couldn't get my system to boot properly when I have the ICH8R in RAID 1 mode.
I have the boot drive on a single, non-raid Wester Digital 250gb Cavair HD on the ICH8R.
Installed XP Pro SP2 with the ICH8R in IDE mode.  I installed in IDE mode beceause I was unable to install XP on my single drive when ICH8R was in RAID mode.  I installed XP in IDE mode, did all driver updates, then put the ICH8R into RAID 1 mode for my other data drives and the system will post, start to boot and get to the Windows XP boot screen then the system just restarts before the boot completes.  It does it in normal boot mode and safe mode as well.
With the ICH8R in IDE mode everything boots/runs fine.
The problem is, I need the 6 SATA RAID controllers on the ICH8R as I have 3 RAID1 arrays.
I've done all the updates to windows, motherboard bios, Highpoint RocketRaid bios update, tried every mode on the ICH8R, unplugged the Highpoint Rocket Raid, left it plugged in with no drives plugged in, disabled the Jmicron controller, everything I can think of.
    Any help would be appreciated.
I did not do the windows floppy driver install for the ICH8R when I installed XP, but I have not had to do that in the past with the ICH7 on my old motherboard so I assumed I wouldn't here as I've been told it's just if you are installing windows on a RAID.
    System:
    MSI P965  Platinum
Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 CPU
    (4) 1gb OCZ Gamer Extreme DDR2 PC6400 RAM
    Windows XP SP2
High Point Rocket RAID 2300 PCI Express x1 RAID card
Asus nVIDIA GS7300 PCI Express Video card
    Drives on ICH8R Controller:
Boot Drive: WD Cavair 250gb SATA2
DVD: Some sony 16x DVD - SATA
RAID1: (2) Seagate Barracuda 320gb SATA2 HD's (setup on previous motherboard on Intel ICH7 Controller)
    (2) Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA2 HD's
High Point Rocket RAID 2300 Controller:
    (2) Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA2 HD's

The problem that you are having has nothing to do with your mainboard.
Once you decide to install Windows XP SP2 when the ICH8R controller is in IDE mode, Windows will give you a bluescreen once you switch to RAID mode after the installation is done because it is to stupid to change to the proper driver.  Consider this as normal behaviour.
    You have basically three possibilities:
    1. Reinstall XP with integrated SP2 and integrate the Intel ICH8R RAID drivers using a floppy disk
The latest drivers can be found here.
As I understand, you have already tried that.  I if you don't feel like trying this again, have a look at this:
    2. Slipstream Intel ICH8R SATA RAID drivers using NLITE or XP ISO BUILDER and try to install again with a self-made install CD that already includes the proper drivers (no floppy needed)
Use google to find one of the tools I mentioned.  The procedure is free, perfectly legal and easy to do.  Guides for this can be found all over the internet
    3. Switching to RAID mode without having to re-install Windows XP
If you are still using your existing installation, that was done when the controller was in IDE mode, the follwing trick may work for you.
I posted a little guide on how to switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to re-install XP.  Have a look at the guide.  The procedure is essentially the same for RAID.  The only difference is the content of the REG-File that you have to make.
Guide: HOW TO switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to reinstall Win XP (GUIDE)
Use the following content for the REG file instead of the one I put up in the above thread:

    "Count"=dword:00000001
    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001
The procedure works perfectly well in most cases (but not always).
I hope one of these three "methods" will work for you.

  • IMac won't boot after OSX  Intel update crash - Newbie needs help please!

    Hi,
at the weekend I updated OSX on my IMac 17 with an Intel update. An error message said that the update could not be installed and that the update was sent to the trash - a restart was requested. Since that shutdown my Mac chimes and gets stuck at the white load screen (hard drive is quiet).
    I've tried the following:
Holding Shift key upon boot to initiate Safe Mode - No Joy!
Apple+S to run disk utlity/console - cannot initiate to cmd prompt!
Just as a little background - I'm a recent Apple convert and typical Windows defector. I've seen the light after many years in M**soft environments (I even trained to MCSE) but my Mac OS knowledge is considerably lacking. Let's be honest - so far I haven't had any problems.
Any gentle help would be most appreciated folks - I'm not sure where to start and I want my baby back!
    Many thanks.

Same here. I have an iMac 20". It has been upgraded to Leopard and running fine since I purchased it 2 weeks ago. I downloaded the latest OS/X update (100+MB in size) but the installation failed. The system requested a reboot but it has not been able to ever since. It simply keeps beeping with a white screen. I put the Leopard DVD in, held the "C" key, but nothing works. Now I have a system that won't work. From now on, I will shy away from getting the latest update .... I am planning to take it to the apple store

  • Can't boot windoze from extra sata ports in MacPro?

I recently bought a 5th HD for my Mac Pro planning to mount the drive under the optical drive and take advantage of the 2 extra sata ports on the mobo. Because my Vista drive was the only one with the old style power connector ( and I have no adapter ), I thought I'd put it up there and the new drive in the sled. Long story short, the Vista HD mounts when I boot into my Mac OS(s), but it won't boot into Vista..
Is this a known limitation of bootcamp/windoze/MacPro? Will a SnowLeopard OS drive boot from that sata port or is it only going to be useful for data drives? Any other limitations of those 2 extra ports?
Sorry if this has been answered before, I couldn't seem to form a useful query..
    TIA

    Hi flommer,
by default Windows or better said the Apple BootCamp Drivers for Windows can not see or use the odd SATA ports.
Have a look here http://osx86.net/archive/index.php/t-3159.html for possible solutions to that.
    Hope it helps

  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

  • My 27" iMac (2009) won't boot OSX from the internal drive

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning.
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo.
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

You have a serious drive issue that likely can't be repaired that way.
Follow the data recovery efforts here, your drive still works and thus data can be recovered, won't be easy
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3172
If you have your data off the machine, to a storage drive (or earlier with TM)
then hold command r keys and use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Partiton with Zero option, and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers.
use the same name (important), different password ok Software Update fully
install your programs from fresh orignal sources and return files into their respective folders
once your stable, read the backup proceedures here etc.

  • Mini won't boot up from internal hard drive

    Greetings,
I can't get my Mac Mini to boot from it's internal hard drive. It just gets stuck at the grey apple screen wth the spinning gear, nonstop. Booting in safe mode produced the same behavior (still wouldn't boot). DiskWarrior fixed some directory problems and found some corrupted microsoft office files which I deleted but it still won't boot. It boots fine off an external USB drive.
I've tried disconnecting all peripherals except keyboard,  mouse, and monitor, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, and reinstalling the OS over the existing one (but not a clean install).
Disk Utility and DiskWarrior both now say the boot drive is fine, but of course it still gets stuck at the grey boot screen.
Booting in verbose mode it shows the following errors and then hangs:

  • Why won't my DVDs from iDVD play on my Macbook Pro?

I have made over 3 dozen DVDs from home movies using iMovie and iDVD. They have all played fine on my Macbook Pro. For some reason now, any movies I make and burn using iMovie and iDVD won't playback on my Macbook Pro, but will playback on my wifes Macbook or our DVD player or a windows computer. What is going on?

I am having the same problem and it is extremely inconvenient and frustrating. Here's what is happening to me:
I am a Film and Video Studies major at George Mason University, so I use Final Cut Pro a lot, everything works fine with that. I export it to Quicktime and go through the regular procedure of putting in on iDVD. My friend was working on a project and I told him I would help him out by making him a DVD as a part of his final project. So I made the DVD using iDVD in the computer lab, same operating system, same software. I used the type of DVD's I used before so that's not it. After I burned it, I took it back to my dorm and tried to watch it, instead of opening the DVD Player application it opened iDVD and asked me if I wanted to start a new project.
    Anybody know what's going on?

  • IMac g5 (isight) 20 inch won't boot up from harddrive or cd

Hey! I am going to make this all very clear and explain everything to the best of my ability (this might be long).
My friend gave me this iMac g5 with the built in iSight. The computer was not functioning properly, so I decided to see if I could find some help fixing it.
Basically, like many others, my computer is stuck on the grey loading screen, and I can't figure out what operating system it is running because of this. I asked my friend what OS it was running and he said he didn't know. I have tried EVERYTHING to fix it. Here's a list:
Pressed Option key at start (nothing happened)
Pressed C key at start with Disk Warrior in the cd drive (won't boot from cd)
Pressed C key with Tiger OSX in cd drive (won't boot from cd)
Reset the PRAM to no avail
Reset the SMU to no avail
Infact, the only thing that seems to work is COMMANDOPTION+OF ...and I don't know what to do when i get to that screen...i've been using it to eject cd's from the imac...thats about all i know.
PLEASE HELP! I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!

    Thankyou for your response!
Unfortunately, I have been to that support page. I cannot even get into disk utility, let alone the mac osx software.
is there anything else i can try? maybe something in open firmware since its the boot key that works
