Package search by file name

Hi there,
I am wondering if there is a way to locate a particular package if I only know a name of some file it contains. The www.archlinux.org/packages seems to search only the short describtion and package name.
This is quite stupid since it happens quite often that you work with some tutorial which wants you to run some utility and you do not have it. Or you want to run a program you just dowloaded sources from and compiled them and you need a library, but you have no idea what package it might be in.
I know it is possible to look through installed packages by file name using 'pacman Qo /path/to/file'. However I would like to do the same for packages not yet installed. Moreover without having to specify the full path.
For example I am looking for 'mkfs.vfat' utility to format my usb stick.
I already found it to be part of dosfstools, but it was more a luck than any systematic search ...

Sorry for that. I didn't want to upset anyone. Actually arch seems to me to be the 'right' dristribution for me after trying redhat, suse, mandriva and *buntu at last. Please be a bit tolerant, I am not a native English speaker and somtimes my expressions are a bit clumsy. When I said stupid I was definitely not referring to pacman but to the process of looking for the right package I couldn't figure out. My apology and thanks to everyone's answer.

Where is Search by File Name in Mountain Lion?

My spotlight searches in 10.6 used to allow me to search either by contents or file name. Now, in 10.8, I seem to be able to search by contents only. Is there a way to get search by file name back? Some preference somewhere?

Use the box in Finder. Put the cursor there, hit the space bar, and you will get a + sign on the right. Hit it and you can select to search by name on the left.

Change the Finder search default to Find by Name (search by file name) rather than Find by Content

I just discovered another way to set the finder Find option to default to "find by name" (search by file name). I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. I'm not sure if this works on other OS versions, but it probably does.
Here's a step by step:
#1: Open System Preferences
#2: Click on "Keyboard"
#3: Click on "Keyboard Shortcuts"
#4: Click on "Application Shortcuts" (on my system this was the last item located on the left-hand side window)
#5: Click the little "+" right below the right-hand side window
#6: Click on the "Application" menu and choose "finder.app"
#7: Click into the field "Menu Title:" and type "Find by Name..." (Type it exactly like that including the three dots. Don't type the quotes BTW.)
#8: Click into the field "Keyboard Shortcut:" and press the command-key and F at the same time. It should look like this ⌘F
#9: Close System Preferences
That's it. Basically what you are doing is remapping the command-F key (⌘F) to "Find By Name".
I tried to post this to other previous discussions asking this same question, but they were all locked.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Quick finder search by file name

NW65 +SP6 (soon to be SP7)
I'm sure this has been asked before, with the latest version.
I would like to search mainly images, although pdf's also,
Can the latest version search by file name and maybe exif info of an image?...the EXIF is not vital but search images by file name would be cool.
Or some kind of addon to do so.

No it doesn't. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A single shot can be in 100 albus and use no extra disk space at all.
If you have the same shot in two Events then yes, the file is duplicated.

The Finder doesn't really understand the iPhoto Library. It's quite possible for the iPhoto Library to contain many files with the same name. The Library also contains different versions of the same shot - thumbnail, originals and edited version. This is normal.

Document search by file name using TREX

Hello,
We have implemented searching of documents using TREX. At the moment TREX finds all documents where search term is included BOTH in the file name (title) AND the content of the document. We need to limit the search results only to the documents where the search term is a part of the file name/title and NOT the content.
I know that searching for the term in the title and content is a standard functionality. Is there any way to limit searching for documents only to the title? Are there any parameters that I could place in the KM Document iView in the property 'query' that will limit searching to the file name?
We use SAP NW 7.0 SP18.

I have followed the suggested solution with the predifined properties - "cm_displayname(/default)" - in a new Search option set and a new Search Component set containing only two aliases: search_predefined_props and standard_search, but it seems that searching is using the standard_search alias anyway. If I remove it from the search component, I do not have a full-search field for entering the value.

I want to search by FILE NAME not CONTENT!

Whenever I do a search, using either Spotlight or a Finder window, the results displayed are by "Content." Then I have to click "File Name," because 9.9 times out of 10, that's how I want to search. How do I get the search to default to File Name?

Problems with search by file name

I was recently trying to find a duplicate copy of a file that I had saved in 2 locations. One copy of the file was on the desktop, and I typed a keyword from the file name into the search box in a finder window, then clicked "File Name." To my surprise, no results came up. Can anyone suggest why the search function is not even finding the file that was staring at me on the desktop (that was the copy of the file I wanted to keep).

Check your Spotlight Preferences and make sure in the Search Results tab all the type of files are selected that you want to search for. Then check your Privacy tab and ensure that you did not add your desktop as a place that can't be searched.
Also, just wondering: you posted this question in the Snow Leopard forums, but your profile lists you as 10.4.9.

Why does searching by file name ignore files that are there?

This is NOT a question about Spotlight. I'm using the old-fashioned command-F method of searching, and I'm searching for terms within a file name, i.e "Name Contains _". When I type in the name of a known file and search for it, it doesn't show up. These are not particularly long or unusual file names. This is a disaster, to say the least.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? Is something corrupt? (My computer is quite new, though I have put lots of files on it from my old computer.) I've checked permissions and run disk utility on my hard disk and they're all fine. What gives?

As a brody said that is still using Spotlight.
There can be 2 reasons for this 1) Spotlight does not
search in some system folders, 2) Spotlight is not
indexing.
EasyFind is my recommendation, works well and is free
and is spotlight independent.
You can get Spotlight to re-index by opening up the
preferences pane, click on Privacy, add the hard
drive you want to re-index to Privacy. Then remove
it and close preferences, Spotlight will immediately
start indexing the hard drive again.

How to Use FULL TEXT Indexing Search on file names with brackets

I would like to use a FULL Text Seach query to find Files on a windows file system
The Problem is when the case comes up where there is a parentheses"()" in the file name. This example was created from a file copy being pasted in the same folder location as the original a few times.
Here is my code:

@SearchWord VARCHAR(50)
SET @SearchWord = '"KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg"'
SELECT [FileName], [FilePath] FROM [dbo].[tblLegalPlan] WHERE CONTAINS(*, @SearchWord)
When I use Double quotes for the @Searchword I recieve no results.

When I remove the Double Quotes for the @Searchword I recieve an error message:

Msg 7630, Level 15, State 2, Line 8
Syntax error near '(' in the full-text search condition 'KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg'.
When I search for files containing TEXT up to the bracket i Get undesrired results obviously:

KAP1556PP_P01(2).jpg BC\EPP\KAP
I would like results where I can search for the file name and only one file is found matching the search word.

Is this a SQL Server Reporting question? You maybe better off posting this in a more relevant forum.

Search by file name as default?

I miss hitting CTL-CMD-F (I think that was the keystroke combo!) to get a finder window that will search by filename. Is there a way to do this in lion? so far all I've found is the drop down menu and I hate that extra step every time!
Has anyone found a way to do this?

Prior versions of the finder had an option to allow searching of file names only. This seems to be gone in Mavericks. Is there any way to get it back?

While the default is to search for both name matches and content matches when you start typing into the search box you will be presented with the option to limit the search to the name

Can an Adobe search contain many file names to be retrieved in mass?

In any Adobe product, is there a way to cut and paste a large list of file names, in one search, to be retrieved from a data base of 100,000+ searchable .pdf files? What is the maximum file names allowed in one search? Can you "mass" print (or save) the results of the search?
We need a software product that can search for file names (entry numbers) within a huge searchable .pdf data base and retrieve the specific files listed on search to be printed or saved in mass. Does anyone know if Adobe offers such a product? I have read the specifics regarding Adobe search within the products, but I did not come away with the impression that Adobe could perform the type searches we are looking for?
Please advise if you know of any software product that could mass extract specific files from data base into a print queue.

A way to search System Files and by File Name as default?

Hello.
Is there a way I can make the default search both include searching by File Name and searching System Files?
I know I can make a saved search, but this just is one extra step. I'd like to the default behavior of the Finder be to search system files, and default to searching by File Name rather than contents.

If you bring up the Finder window search using Command-Shift-F you will get the default of a file name search (unfortunately it has no criteria whatsoever, so if you want to modify the search with an added criterion you have to click the wee little + icon).
There is no way to automatically include system files.
