Packaging large InDesign document - won't copy all links

I'm trying to Package a 1,000-page InDesign document that has about 375 links for our archive. When I go through the packaging process, however, it only saves about a dozen images or so in the designated folder. Any ideas why it's not taking the time to resave and compile all of the images?

What operating system specs; OS, RAM, available HDD, network or local?
Which version of InDesign, are you fuuly patched?

Can you select all Links in the Links Panel
Use the Flyout Menu on the top right of panel.
    Choose "Utilities>Copy Links to"
    And see if that works.

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?

The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • Large pages document won't save

I have a very large pages document - 400 pages, 1.4GB. I have been replacing all the images in the document with edited versions of them, perhaps making the document slightly larger. When I try to save the document it goes to the halfway mark, stays there for ages, and then says that pages cannot save the document. Is there a certain size document that pages simply won't save as I know I have enough space on my computer to store the file.

Well,  Did you save it as Untitled? Where did you save it? On the HD or on iCloud? Is it just this untitled document or are you having problems with more Pages documents? what else haven't ypu told us?

  • Adding name of indesign document to metadata of all images used in document

I have been asked to include the indesign file name in the metatag of each image used in every document i produce from here on.
is there a way to write a script in indesign that will copy the document name then open every link (in bridge?) and append the document name to the metadata (i don't want to lose any existing tags) and then save?

This should should give you a start. It'll add the active documents name to the field instructions of the img when executed. Tested once. No errorhandling.
    currDoc = app.activeDocument;

  • [JS] how to package an InDesign document

I am trying to script the packaging of InDesign files.
    function packageForPrint (to, copyingFonts, copyingLinkedGraphics, copyingProfiles, updatingGraphics, ignorePreflightErrors, creatingReport, versionComments, forceSave){
    app.activeDocument.packageForPrint (Folder.desktop, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, true);
I thought the packageForPrint was the way to go. But I can't get the correct structure.
Can someone give me a clue as the direction I need to go with this.
I am using InDesign CS2 on a Mac. But want the script to work cross platform.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You can find detailed information about it in ‘File System Access’ chapter of JavaScript Tools Guide. Or use this script – it writes the path of the selected folder to console.

  • Large Word document won't let me work

I have a very large Word document (322.5 MB) that I need to work on. I think it has a number of pictures or other graphic items in it. I can open it but then Word doesn't respond. It doesn't say the program is not responding, but I can't do anything, even remove the pictures or break up the document into several smaller ones. Any ideas?

  • Large cs3 document won't open in cs6

    Good morning,
I have a 1.3gb catalogue that was created in InDesign cs3. I have now got cs6 and have tried to open the file but it keeps freezing on "converting data".
On the odd occasion it crashes the pc almost instantly, on others it just seems to freeze or be making small progress for hours before eventually crashing the pc.
The current scenario has the document being opened for 8hrs and it is about 30% along the progress bar.
Is there anyway that I can improve the performance of this conversion?
I am working on a windows pc with vista 64bit (which works with other documents fine), running with 6gb ram.
    Look forward to any advice.

I can't find anyone with cs3 to open the file, we have a cs4 within the business but again with no joy in opening the file.
A friend of mine has an old cs3 from their student days but I assume it won't let me activate the licence as it as a student / teacher licence and it probably was not deactivated from their old system, and I guess also it's just not the right thing to do...
I have the file in PDF which could be a solution, albeit meaning I lose the edit ability of the old pages, but at least I can use these along side some new pages.
otherwise there's going to be alot of work to replicate this old file in a newer version of ID.
thanks for all your comments, I will let you know how I fair

  • What can I do to open a large InDesign document that crashed.

My doc was in CS4, (I have CS5), it froze up I had to force quit now when I try to open I get a "Failed to Import" error.  Does anyone have a solution for this or do I lose the day and go back to yesterday's document?
I shut down the computer and came home for some sleep before I tackle this. I am on deadline any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

My doc was in CS4, (I have CS5)
Err, this is confusing. Which is it?
Were you editing a cs4 doc in cs5?
If you can still open the ddocument, try exporting to IDML and opening that. But in general:
do I lose the day and go back to yesterday's document?
This is probably the way to go. And you also know it is going to work, so you won't be wasting a lot of your time trying futile efforts...Sorry for the bad news.

  • SL won't copy all files

When trying to copy files from one NAS drive to a second for back up I received an error message that "the operation can't be completed because the item already exists" while in fact the folder has been copied with one or two of the items but not all. The only work around has been to copy each folder individually. Nested folders do not copy either. Makes back up impossible.

The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “20100401 Images” already exists.
I get this also, just started when I try and copy from a jump drive to an external USB drive.

  • Export Large Indesign Document to Hyperlinked/Bookmarked PDF

I am trying to export a 600+ Indesign book as a PDF with hyperlinks and bookmarks but it constantly crashes. I have tried many things, including splitting the document into small batches, exporting and appending the pdfs but that is most time-consuming and definitely not efficient. I am using CS5. Does anyone have any solutions. Thanks.

There’s a script floating around but it’s easier to export one PDF and then use the extract pages command in Acrobat to make single pages.

  • My indesign document won't open and is now only 0KB

On page 350 something of a book I'm working on, I had to leave the office, so I turned off the computer.
When I turned the computer back on it performed a scan of sorts saying it wanted to check for corrupted files (I think - I didn't pay it much mind, just let it do its thing). I left the scan going paying little attention. It finished itself and the computer booted up (no message of finding any problems). The file I was working on will now not open and reads as being 0KB in size.
Does InDesign not keep a backup of a file anywhere? I've tried looking in C:/User/(User name)/AppData/Local but then there is no Adobe folder for me to look in for a recovery file.
Please can anyone suggest something, I've lost about 8 weeks of work on this bloody maths book which was just about finished.

I'm quite new to InDesign and am more used to working in CorelDraw. Corel creates an automatic back up file everytime you save. I'm so used to that process that I've taken for granted having the need to make a back up myself.
I'm amazed that InDesign doesn't do the same.
I'm sorry this happened to your, but still, I'm amazed that with a project of this magnitude, you didn't have a backup on a separate hard drive. The jobs I work on range from a couple pages to a couple hundred pages, and I back my work up to a separate hard drive every night. Worst case, I lose one day' work.

You probably hit the Numbered List on the control panel (top). Just deselect it and it should be fine.

  • Packager for iPhone Labs Forum - moved but old links don't work :(

Since Packager for iPhone is an obsulete product now and everybody "should" use AIR 2.6, the Packager for iPhone forum disappered today and all links bring to the page saying: "It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake."
Come on guys, the old links to the specific forum threads should still work, I bookmarked so many links ralated to many problems "to read later" and now they are gone... Would be nice if there was some redirect to the same threads on the new forum if they were moved (I hope they aren't removed). So far we can only used "cached" in Google version...

Yeah, great, thanks Adobe... you've just lost years worth of community comments and resource there!
Who thought that removing that forum could ever be a good idea?!
It could have stayed as a static 'read only' forum with this being the new place to add comments and threads.
    Shocking really...
Please Adobe re-instate it. You're normally amazing but this truly sucks and is very surprising.

  • InDesign CC won't package due to "Cannot copy necessary font(s)" error.

Every time I try to package out a file in InDesign its gets about 3/4s of the way through and then shows the "Cannot copy necessary font(s)" dialog box. I have read on certain discussions it may be a font issue. When I remove ALL fonts from my computer font library and use only preset Adobe fonts, Arial Regular for example, it works fine, then as soon as I use a font say, Helvetica Neue Light, I get the error. I have only recently upgraded to CC and all of the existing fonts in my library have always worked fine and never been a problem when packaging... However due to the tests with different fonts, it seems to be a font issue and not a links/filename issue like other people have had.

I am experiencing the exact same problem/same error message as Brendan. I just installed InDesign CC; was using CS5 prior, and WAS having NO issues with the same fonts being packaged (all Myriad Pro family). In the Package dialog box > Fonts section; this is displayed: "8 Fonts Used, 0 Missing, 0 Embedded, 0 Incomplete, 0 Protected." The Show Problems Only checkbox IS checked, no problems flagged, no errors in the Preflight panel either. On the "More Info" panel within the "Find Font" menu, every one of the fonts used has "Restrictions: Normal".  Packaging with the "Report" button option selected is not helpful, (you'll get a text file with YourJob_report.txt, showing no font errors) InDesign stops packaging but creates a job Folder containing a "Document Fonts" folder with only a tmp file inside. Extract that and read it in a Text Editor. Here's what I found:

It seems MyriadPro Black Condensed MAY be the culprit in my case.
By the way, isn't it a bit redundant to manually create a "Document Fonts" folder, drag / copy all the fonts used in my file into that folder, THEN to try and "package" them— again?! What ? Isn't that the whole point of the feature, to perform that exact task?
