[Packard Bell EasyNote MX61-B] Xorg crash: black screen or segfault

Hi everyone,
I recently reinstalled Arch Linux after few months on Debian, and I remember I had a bug with Xorg. This bug appears known, but I can't find a solution or explication (maybe I don't search enough). Sometimes, I've a black screen for 5 seconds (approximately). I can do nothing and my computer doesn't respond. In my Xorg.0.log file, I've juste this line :
AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
It can happen one, two or three times in one minute, and it's very annoying. I can't reproduce that. I have no idea how, no idea of what is happening.
But sometimes, it's more critical: same symptoms, but my Xorg session is totaly ugly. It doesn't crash, but I did as squares, rectangles of all colors.. If I kill X (with pkill X or ctrl/alt/bksp) and restart it, same result. I have to reboot my computer. In my Xorg.0.log, I've a segfault.
My log file and configuration:
Packard Bell EasyNote MX61-B-050FR
Video driver: xf86-video-ati
10-evdev.conf : http://bpaste.net/show/118059/
10-quirks.conf: http://bpaste.net/show/118060/
20-keyboard.conf: http://bpaste.net/show/118911
50-synaptics.conf: http://bpaste.net/show/118061/
Xorg.0.log: http://bpaste.net/show/118058/
lspci: http://bpaste.net/show/118913
Should I post a ticket on Xorg bugtracker ?
Thank you.

I've read this page http://projects.gnome.org/gdm/docs/2.14 … oting.html
I would like to do as they say, ie find the way gdm startx xorg but arch's gdm package doesn't contain the defaults.conf file where it should be indicated.
Any idea ?
Regards,
Mikael

  • ITunes with videos bad, Music & Regular! Crash, Black Screen, Tagging?

So i have been using iTunes for ages and have been collection Music's CD's longer and i got to load them to iTunes a while ago. Music works great in iTunes but with my CD's i often got music video's included so i tried to play them and some regular videos in iTunes and got the following problems and issues (Almost all the tested video files was optimised for iProducts (All MP4 format)) :
Can't use some of my music videos (mp4 format) in itunes but i can in Quicktime (Got black screen but good sound ). I have no idea how they coded iTunes but shouldn't they use the same codec's?.
iTunes have a tendency to crash if i play music videos in a row. (Like to use random in a music video list, calming in the background. i know it's kind of excessive but i like it).
Sometimes i need to play through a music video then reverse back to it to get a picture. (Sound works great tho) .
Laggy! Sometimes the sound get out of sync with video and vice versa. (Usually the beginning.  Has a tendency to catch up but not always, sometimes a middle lane in the video freezes.)
Can't you tag or sort video files better.? My computer sometimes crashes or get changed so i need to reinstall my media library from a backup. It would immensely help if i could ID3 tag media files the same way i can song so they automatically sort in to music video's, movies and Tv-series (media types!) without forcing me too change it in the advance tap at show more information. (This is off topic but i need this for audiobooks too (iTunes don't got my type of books so i am manually coping them from CD to MP3 format and transferring them to my iPhone))
So i'm a trial and error person so i worked a little bit with the problems when i had the time and  when finally got somewhere and had some real questions so i created this profile and wrote this post.
Please read the whole post before you go yelling: -Look at this!, Already Asked!, See this forum! It's your computer! I usually get to the point somewhere on this post. At the bottom of the post i have my current specs for my computer. So here comes the wall of text:
I started with this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1718?viewlocale=en_US and http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717 which is what you get if you search a bit in apple's support site. Tried all the things there. Disabled Direct3D, Tried Safe Mode On (Note: These two made the performance worse not better.), Checked display colour quality (Maxed), Turned on DMA, (A slight improvement still issues.) and finally got to ReadyBoost. I have all my media on an external drive (Aha you says!) and yes i finally figured out that iTunes can't handle files of that size from a regular external (Observe i do not have ReadyBoost on my 1T drive, It says it don't have the necessary performance). So i moved my video files to my internal drive and it significantly improved in problems 2,3,4 (Not gone!), Also noticed that i need to have as short pathway as possible (smaller improvements yet again!) (None of this shows in troubleshooting, Apple needs to read my post i think.)
I am now browsing web forums for a better suggestions on the problems and found that Apple either did not care about the problems or the members of this or other forums recommended other media player's to use for handling devices and media (MediaMonkey, doubleTwist and so on). Either as to further their own agenda or that they have giving up on iTunes as a media player for large number of media files. (Found a good media tagger, Magic MP3 Tagger, which worked wonders on some of my older albums with no or little information). So back to my problems or questions.
What can be the trouble with a mp4 format?
Tendency to crash, is iTunes really that unstable?
Play through music video to see picture. Really iTunes?
Laggy! don't know what more to say or fix. (iTunes take to long to buffer (got between 0-15 seconds delay after i come this far, better then before but not great)
Sort video files better. (Tags). The only format i know to date that instantly recognise what media type it is, some movie format and the ringtone format m3u  (Useful to know is that you can make your own ringtones by creating a ACC with a limited play time in advanced tab (max 30 seconds)  then change the last file ending of the ACC file now created to m3u. Viola! (Don’t forget to change back to the regular playtime on the original file) your custom created ring/smstone in workable and high quality, but i digress).
Sorry for the long read but i wanted to be as thorough as possible and please forgive any grammar and spelling problems. English is not my native tongue and the spelling checker did not work in my laptop (browser) on this website
Currently using (The one with iTunes and the external hard drive) (But have had two different computers before with same problem, 1 PC & 1 Mac):
    Screen
    SyncMaster T240
    Videocard
    ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512Mb)
    PC
    ACPI x86
    Motherboard
    ASUSTeK Computer INC (P5G-PRO)
    Memory
    Type DDR2 Dual
    Size 4096 MB
    External Harddrive
WD Ext HDD 1021 USB Device
    IDE ATA/ATAPI
    Standard-Dual Channel PCI IDE
    Standard-Dual Channel PCI IDE
    Soundcard
    TerraTec Aureon 5.1 PCI
    AMD High Definition Audio Device
    Processor
    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2,33GHZ

This problem cropped up for me yesterday. I had just copied a new video to my iTunes library and was testing that it worked properly, but while the sound was playing, the screen was black.
Pausing/pressing the Play button resolves the issue, until I select a new video/movie to play, when I have to do it again.
I'm running MacOS X 10.6.6 and iTunes 10.1.1 (4). I tried reinstalling iTunes, with no luck. I also tried the old mainstay of replacing the Preferences file, but that also didn't help.
There is ONE new wrinkle to this situation. Yesterday, I had installed a new app named AirView to stream videos over AirPlay to my iPad. This works fine, but after this, the issue cropped up, suggesting an AirPlay issue.
I have two iMacs, so decided to try this situation on the Kitchen iMac and played a video on this other iMac just fine, video and sound. I then started up AirView on the iPad and initiated the video stream to the iPad from the Kitchen iMac. The movie played fine on the iPad. I quit AirView and went back to try the video on the Kitchen iMac, and yes, the video now failed to display until I reselected Computer from the AirPlay menu at the bottom of the screen, or used the pause/play solution, even though Computer was still selected as the default in the AirPlay menu. Doing this once seemed to be enough to resolve the issue for playing all videos on the Kitchen iMac, but not on the Office iMac.
The only other difference between iTunes on these two iMacs is that one (the Office iMac) is running its videos from a FireWire 800 attached 2TB hard drive, while the Kitchen iMac's contents are on the internal hard drive.
Deselecting the AirPlay option in Preferences/Devices to start videos correctly on the Office iMac is not a solution, since this iMac serves as our home server for our Apple TV.
Since I have a practical option, however, and since this issue doesn't affect playing videos remotely using AirPlay, this is now a buggy annoyance, but no longer a problem for me.

  • [Xorg/startx] black screen with startx

I notice a strange bug with the new version of xorg packages if I use the "startx" method for running KDE4,
    description of this bug :
    1) I type "startx -- vt1"
    2) KDE4 loads successfully
    3) I run a 3D game ( or glxgears )
    4) I choose the "logout" menu in KDE4
    5) then I type again "startx -- vt1" to start again KDE4
    6) KDE4 loads but if I move the mouse I get a black screen, but I can see the HDD led continues to light
this bug doesn't occur if I start KDE with KDM,
    my system:
    - archlinux 32 bits
    - laptop with pentium 4 2.4 Ghz 1.2 Gb ram
    - SIS645DX chipset
    - ati radeon 9000 AGP ( I use DRI2 with KMS, xf86-video-ati driver )

Sorry, I will use code tag next time.
I deleted xorg.conf and it works.
It seems a little bit strange, because xorg.conf is generated automatically by X itself. Why xorg.conf does not work?

Can you Ctrl-Alt-Backspace out of the X server?
Nothing jumps out at me in your X server log.  You can try paring your xorg.conf down to a minimum and try and let X figure it all out.  Here's mine, for example:
    Section "Device"
    # Identifier "VideoCard"
    # Driver "fglrx"
    # Option "monitor-PANEL" "InternalLCD"
    #EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "VideoCard"
    driver "radeonhd"
    Option "monitor-PANEL" "InternalLCD"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "VideoCard"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0660
    EndSection
You can comment out (or delete) the "Device" section that has radeonhd in it, and uncomment the fglrx one (I haven't tried fglrx on Arch64 yet, but plan to to see if it resolves some issues I'm having).

  • Imac crashes black screen

Imac Crashes leaving black screen, need to turn off and on again to remedy.... quite sporadic in any programme - can anyone help?

The fans may not be the cause of the problem but it's definitely related. Now I'm running the hardware monitor every time I play D3 and it always warns me that the CPU fans is spinning up shortly before the crash, which may then occur within seconds or at most 2-3 minutes when I stay in fullscreen. I can't remember experiencing a crash after I went back to windowed mode after the alarm, but I also haven't pushed it much. Also, the temperatures reported really don't look awful at all, nothing exceeds 80°C, there's no sudden surge.
Interestingly, the computer actually keeps running after the screen goes black (but D3 is definitely out), and only when I press cmd-alt-esc does the whole system go completely down (looping sound).
I've checked the logs and couldn't find anything really significant, then again I may not know what to look for. The only suspicious entries at more or less exactly the time of the crash (although I can't tell whether it's when D3 crashes, or the whole computer) are the following in kernel.log:
    12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **
12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: 0x00006740
This is followed by 544 lines similar to the last one with various hex addresses over five seconds, although after line 436 only 0x00000000's are reported. The line just after that is at the time when I restart the computer and says
Jul 14 15:00:36 localhost kernel[0]: PMAP: PCID enabled
system.log doesn't report anything in this time frame, there's no crash report for D3 in CrashReporter... Is there anything else I could check?

  • Server 2008 crash - black screen with mouse cursor

dell poweredge 2950 with Perc 5/I RAID, ESXi 4.1 host, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM
After swapping out a failed raid5 drive this vm began displaying inpage operation error popups while checking folder permissions.  event viewer errors:
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2.
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.
chkdsk /r run from the win2k8r2sp1 install dvd command line resulted in more corrections than i was able to screenshot:
After this the server would only boot to black screen with mouse cursor.  same black screen result in safe mode or directory services restore mode.  sfc /scannow, startrep, and registry repair from the folder contents @ c:\windows\system32\config\regback
have been attempted with no improvement.  I am still able to access the filesystem contents using the command line from the win2k8r2sp1 installation DVD -  user + registry files copied over to another drive without problem and i was able to load
the registry hive on another system.  This server was doing dns, domain controller and certification authority but the only important item is getting the CA back somehow.  Any suggestions are welcome.

    Hi,
According the information you have provided, the file system is broken.
After the repair, do chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow give any warning or error?
If yes, it means that the file system and system file are not repaired. Please post the error or warning here. It may give some hints.
    Best Regards.

  • 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro crashes (black screen) on Windows 7

Hi, I am running Windows 7 (bootcamp obviously) and out of the blue my screen went black, my only option was to make a hard reset. I can then run Windows on Safe Mode, and I found out that if I turn off the graphics card (HD 4000) then Windows will run OK in "normal" mode.
That happened a month ago, and the only thing I could think of was re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. Windows ran flawless until  a couple of days ago where the black screen appeared again and the only way I managed to get into Windows again was either on Safe Mode or in normal mode (with the graphics drivers unabled).
Please help me, I really need to run Windows for work and this is really bothering me.

"Don't think it's the inverter since that helps turn on the backlight on."
Actually the inverter bumps the 5 V. ? from the logic board and bumps it up to high voltage to drive the back light.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/51132/MacBook+inverter+board...how+to+test
Checks you could try would be to check the input voltage to the inverter board. Check the inverter cable for shorts. These are easily seen on close inspection.  If there is a short it could have taken out the tiny fuse that's on the logic board. Or the inverter board itself could be bad. Sub board repairs would require known good replacements. I have identified that fuse but on an earlier model and repaired it after replacing the inverter cable but no tech would go that far.

  • Iphone 4 crashed - black screen + constant vibrating

    HI there
Can anyone help me with a serious iphone crash please?
The phone showed yellow triangle saying something like 'device can not be charged with this accessory' (I wasn't trying to charge it to anything at the time), then it went fuzzy, then black and started vibrating constantly.
I tried to reboot it via pushing the on/off and home buttons simultaneously. I tried to plus it into my laptop but itunes doesn't recognise it.
I am in an airport on my way to Lima!
    Thanks

    Here are Apple Steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
You can try a DFU Mode Restore:
Open iTunes on Computer, connect iPhone to Computer with USB Cable, hold both Home and Power buttons for exactly 10 seconds, release the Power button, keep holding the Home Button until iTunes says it has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds longer. If the iPhone Screen is Black, Blank this is DFU Mode, Restore the iPhone Firmware. If something is on the screen this is not DFU Mode. Keep trying to get DFU Mode, which is sometimes difficult even for experienced users. DFU Mode = iTunes says Recovery Mode and iPhone Screen is black, blank.
If your iPhone Restore results with an Error, write down the Error Number so you can look up the cause and the fix.

  • IPhone 4s turns off and crashes black screen

    HI all,
i have a fault with my iPhone 4s  where it randomly crashes and turns off I've uninstalled recent apps to see if they were causing it but hasn't helped, it will randomly do it while using an app or browsing the net, even when recording a video I will get black marks across the screen bit like watching an old film then the whole screen freezes and just fades to black slowly,  and only way to turn phone back on is to hold lock and home screen buttons together, but this doesn't always work and I find I have to leave the phone for a few hours worse case has been overnight before it will work again..
    what could this be ?
    its really annoying!

    Hey Chriz1,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will unexpectedly power off and will not turn back on. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,

  • Sudden video crashes/black screen flashing with MSI GTX 680 + MSI GT 640 (PhysX)

I've been running an MSI GTX 680 Lightning + MSI GT 640 (dedicated PhysX) setup since last September with excellent results. Most of my Steam games would crash in less than 10-15 minutes before I added the 640.
Just this week, however, I've noticed a new and different problem. While playing several different games, the monitor randomly flashes black, then the game stutters and finally my whole system crashes. I've never seen this before. The only thing that seems to correct the problem is to scale back the resolution from 2560x1600 to 1920x1200 or even 1280x800.
The problem seems to be getting worse. Now, while doing anything on my PC, the system freezes briefly, the screen rapidly goes black, then turns back on and system unfreezes. This happens 3-5 times in a cycle then stops. The cycle repeats every few minutes and happened twice while typing this post.
I've got the latest graphics and other component drivers installed. All diagnostics say the video cards are working properly, but these problems persist.
Are these indications of failing video cards? Any/all suggestions appreciated.
    My system specs: MSI GTX 680 Lightning 2GB, MSI GT 640 1GB (dedicated PhysX), i5-2500K, Asus P8Z77-V, Coolermaster V8, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600, 4TB storage, Corsair HX1000, Dell 3008WFP, Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

First of all remove the GT640 so we can check if the issue is solely related to the GTX680. Then monitor temps in load and idle using Afterburner (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<)
If problem presists when not using the GT640 remove current drivers in safe mode using >>Driver Fusion<< and install latest MSI driver (http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N680GTX-Lightning.html#/?div=Driver&os=All). Yes, I know that driver is older than Nvidia one but it is a surely working one with the special MSI design and features.

  • IMac crashes (black screen) while playing Diablo 3

    Hi,
I've bought my iMac 27" i5 quad 2.7GHz 8GB in January. It's been working fine, being used mostly for some gaming and desktop apps.
2 months ago I started playing Diablo 3, and started having problems after the first update. Basically, I can play for some time (ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour) and after a while the computer screen just goes completely black, the last fragments of sound start to play in a loop (about .2 to .5 second) and the computer is completely unresponsive. The only course of action is to force it to shut down by pressing the power button for a few seconds. After that, it's not possible to restart the computer right away, I need to wait for a few minutes before it can start. It even happened once that it started to play the startup chime and stopped midway, shutting down all by itself.
A similar problem also happened once or twice, when the computer was simply sleeping and it became impossible to wake it up, I had to shut it down and start it up again.
I've explained the problem to Apple and even took my computer to the store for checkup. However, after they ran some tests they said everything was fine and didn't want to replace any component (it would have been the motherboard or the graphics card). All they could tell me was that I should reinstall the whole system (Lion, up-to-date).
I might do that. However, tonight I tried again to play while monitoring the various thermometers and fan speeds, played in windowed mode so I could see the curves, and set up the computer to take a screenshot every second (AFAIK the monitoring app I'm using doesn't keep logs) so I could replay everything. I got my usual crash after about half an hour. What the screenshots showed is that the various temperatures raised, which probably isn't a big surprise. However, they also show that about 3 minutes before the crash the CPU fan, which had been very stable so far, started to speed up very regularly. While it didn't reach any abnormal speed, it's still weird to see how it began so suddenly and so shortly before the crash.
As one can see from the values in the monitoring windows, the temperatures don't seem to me to be scandalous, but I may not be a good judge. Before I start reinstalling everything, I was wondering whether someone might have experienced a similar issue (couldn't find much about it on the web) or if perhaps these "symptoms" may be meaningful to someone?
    I'm grateful for any advice!

  • My iphone 4 crashed (black screen) and now wont turn on or restore! help, my iphone 4 crashed (black screen) and now wont turn on or restore! help

i can put it into recovery mode but wont finish restoring advise please
