Packet loss spike every 5 minutes (on the nose)

Bit of a weird one. Openreach came out last week to fix our line (and did a fine job too). Went 72 hours without disconnection, all going well, mod got in touch again to book another engineer out to give us an IP Profile reset (booked for this Thursday). With that context in mind...
Today it's all gone a bit weird. The spikes are every 5 minutes exactly. Not really noticable, but the couple of disconnections were. One thing I have noticed is my data rate very, very slightly edging up.
Is this Openreach at work early? Or a symptom of something else? I can't think what else could be causing it.

What I can see its coming from your equipment at 192.168.1.254, just look at the min, max and average, massive ping spikes, virus scan and malware scan would be my first point of call, and check out if any software is hogging the network, could be another PC in the house?
Thats my opinion, anyone else?

My iMac has been restarting "because of a problem" every 5 minutes for the last 4 days. This started only since I updated Mountain Lion OS last Thursday (i didnt update TO mountain lion, i already had it and updated to a version that came up in the mac app store).
Also, it usually restarts while in Sleep mode, and when iPhone 4s (iOS 6) is connected.
Any Help or advise would be appreciated.

Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice; then, follow up with Rember.

There is a problem on Windows 8 with Firefox 19 and AMD Radeon HD 6XXX/7XXX graphic display cards.
This issue is currently being investigated in bug 830531.

  • A warning keeps appearing every 10 minutes indicating the disk was not ejected properly.  How do I stop this warning?

The disk was not ejected properly.  If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.
To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File Eject.  The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk.

Try mounting a disk, then ejecting it properly, see if that helps.  Please post back with results.

  • I use apple TV to watch Netflix.  How can I stream the movie, so it doesn't stop every few minutes?

Why does the Netflix not streaming all at once, instead of every few minutes, interrupting the movie.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • FP-CTR-500 and Frequency Measurement: How to modify it to report the frequency (0-10 Hz) every one minute?

How to modify "Frequency Measurement" to report the frequency every one minute?
The signal frequencies vary from 0 to 10 Hz (see the analog output plot and attached sample data file), so I want record the average frequency every one minute.
    Software: Labview 8.5
    Hardware: FP-CTR-500
Program: "Frequency Measurement"  --build in and under "NI example finder", It was attached with this message.
Physical wiring: (1) The signal I want to measure to count input 1 (pins 2 and 18).  it is a pulse signal (range from 0 to 1 V, see the plot and attached data file).
     (2) Wire Output 0 (pin 130 to gate 0 (pin 9).   Do com pins 26 and 30 need to wire together?
FP-CTR-5000 was set up in Max based on the program instructions. I have tried different gating pulse frequency, my readings are always "0".

    H2O_20130809.xlsx ‏18 KB
    Frequency Measurement.vi ‏35 KB

CTR-500 high pulse is >=10V. Hence, it always read your pulse as low. With this low voltage pulse, you must use analog input module, and write a program to read pulse from analog level. You must also make sure that you pulse is not so narrow that cFP loop is not fast enough to capture voltage change.

  • Since installing the ios5 my iphone3gs keeps restarting every 3 minutes. can anyone help please

since turning my phone on this morning its restarted itself every 3 minutes. ive tried holding the power and home button together to restore it but nothing happened and ive also tried 2 restore factory setting via itunes but the phone just restarts as its attempting 2 restore. its an absolute joke with how much the phones cost and yet it f##ks up all the time

Okay, I've now done yet another software restore but this time I also deleted a bunch of apps and only kept the essential stuff. I'm hoping that has fixed it because, not only do I currently have my phone back (the phone has stopped rebooting itself every few minutes) but the battery is now lasting more than 3 days between recharges. This suggests to me that one of the apps was to blame.
I will point out that my phone is 100% run the 'Apple' way. It is not jailbroken and so all apps came from the iTunes store.

  • Network glitch every two minutes

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue where by applications sending data between 2 Solaris 10 x86 machines (v40z) will hang for about 1 second every two minutes. The interval between the hang is very regular (2 minutes almost to the milisecond) but it doesn't land on a predicitable second each test (eg, 12:34:52, 12:36:52 in one test, 13:13:20, 13:15:20 in another).
It appears to be independant of the application. I can see it during long file transfers using scp as well as internal applications that push steady streams of data. The usual checks with prstat and such don't show anything spiking on the nic, cpu, etc. Packet captures don't show anything unusual coming or going at the times of the hangs. It lasts for 1-1.5 seconds.
The July Recommended set is applied.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

FYI, this ended up being two different situations. In one spot there was a bogus route in the table that was theoretically benign, but removing it made the spikes disappear. The other situation was revolved by removing ipmp from a high-load situation.
My conclusion is that there is something in the driver or stack that is configured to happen every two minutes which can make itself obvious when in the presence of certain networking misconfigurations. I have not patched and retested the ipmp stuff since the original post, but I don't know that that would necessarily be conclusive if it still existed, what with all the ipmp patches coming out lately.

  • Home Hub 3.0 vs Home Hub 2.0 packet loss

So I upgraded the BT package that our family is on today, and with it came the Home Hub 3.0. Happy right? Better wireless, less connection problems etc... No.
For some reason, since upgrading, I get random moments of massive packet loss. Up to 50% packets are lost for periods of up to 5 minutes. I've tried resetting the router, tried turning it off for ten minutes etc but still get regular moments of packet loss.
My internet is not interleaved at the moment so that could be a problem, however before switching to the 3.0 i never had any packet loss with non-interleaved internet (on the 2.0 homehub).
    Could anyone help me?!
    Thanks

  • Help resolving 20-30% packet loss to many sites inc. google and youtube

I've been having issues with pages stop loading, youtube and netflix are not watchable. Netflix will buffer freeze and stop responding. Youtube will load for several seconds then stop buffering. If I refresh the page it will buffer a bit more then stop. Usually to watch a video all the way through you will have to refresh the page 4-5 times per minute of video buffered. Reading forums is also tedious as you have to constantly hit refresh to get pages to finish loading. I’ve been through the standard modem and router reboots, nothing as made a difference.
    Sample ping test:
    >ping -n 100 google.com
    Ping statistics for 74.125.113.105:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 76, Lost = 24 (24% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 48ms, Maximum = 159ms, Average = 55ms
    >ping -n 100 verizon.net
    Ping statistics for 206.46.232.39:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 75ms, Maximum = 110ms, Average = 77ms
    >ping -n 100 youtube.com
    Ping statistics for 72.14.204.136:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 71, Lost = 29 (29% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 39ms, Maximum = 229ms, Average = 45ms
Speed tests usually report the line around 2MBit. If I connect to the VPN where I work, I do not get packet loss. The fact that the same pings through my VPN do not have the issue leads me to believe its some type of routing issue upstream from my DSLs CO.
Also is there any way I can open an online support ticket that is assigned to a Verizon resource with some chain of accountability. I'm frustrated listening to 10 minutes of automated prompts telling me to reboot the modems to get to a resource that did not understand what I meant by packet loss, then somehow disconnected to start the whole process over again.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

#1 Please post the Transceiver Status from your modem.
#2 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a seperate router: What is the brand and model of it?
#3 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) will contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it. If anyone has been helpful to you, please show your appreciation by clicking the "Kudos" button.

  • Wi-Fi packet loss + iMessage 'activation' error

    Hello
    I have two problems:
    - Still having WiFi problems after updating to 10.10.3. This is REALLY annoying... When will there be a fix for this core problem?? Everyone is talking about this. When I do a ping to 8.8.8.8, I get a lot of packet loss (around 50%). Most of the time it's in blocks (5 minutes down / 2 minutes up). I tried everything: rebooting router, rebooting computer, adding/removing WiFi in Network preferences, added different DNS, added manual IP,... Other Mac's in the network do not have this problem... It's the operating system.
    - I recently changed the password of my Apple ID, now I cannot login to iMessage anymore. 'Cannot Sign In to iMessage'; 'An error occurred during activation. Try again.'. I found a fix via Google, people advice to use Chameleon... But I'd like to rely on official support. This issue is around since Mavericks ...

If your Mac supports Handoff try to disable it and check if there is any progress: System Preferences > General > and disable option Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
Also, go to System Preferences > Network and remove Bluetooth PAN/DUN if you have these options on the list of your Network Services.
After above steps, reboot your Mac and test it again.

Try this steps first: If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
If above won't work for you, then i would suggest to create a separate thread for this issue. Otherwise this one will only get messy and soon no one will even look at your thread.

  • Linksys WRT54GSV4 causing packet loss? Wired or Wireless.

Hi.  I have been having trouble for months with my connection having packet loss.  Up until yesterday my results from www.pingtest.net were between 2%-6% packet loss.  Generally at 5% packet loss.  A technician came out yesterday and bypassed my DSL modem and ran that test and got 0% packet loss every single time he ran it.  So I bought a new Westell DSL modem off him to replace my Speadstream 4100 and away he went.
Now, when I hook up my Linksys WRT54GSV4 router to the Westell 6100 DSL modem, I get between 0%-1% packet loss.  It's never higher than 1% but usually is 1%.  This happens on my wireless laptops as well as PC's wired directly into the router.  The main reason this packet loss was affecting me in the first place was Xbox Live gaming.  Gears of War 2 kept thinking I was cheating, and it was host banning me.  Last night I got host and did not get host banned but that doesn't mean it won't ban me in the future for the minimal packet loss.
Any suggestions on why the router could be causing this packet loss when the Linksys router is invovled?  With a PC directly connected to the DSL modem I get 0% packet loss on that ping test every single time.

Try reducing the MTU value to 1365 and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests under Security tab on the router's GUI...and check if it makes any difference.
If the above steps doesn't work then, try to upgrade/reflash the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from the scratch...Download  the firmware for your router and save it on the desktop. Now,On the Linksys GUI,click on Administrator tab to upgrade the firmware.
