[pacman 3.4.0] Trying to install a group gets every package installed.
I've just finished the installation of an Arch VM, mainly to test the different tiling DEs.
When I finished I was to install the X server as I always did ("pacman -S xorg") but I wanted not to install some packages of that group. The problem is that the question about installing or not the whole group was never presented, and assumed to be true (install the whole group).
Is this the current desired behaviour or a bug? If it is the preferred mode of operation is there a way to get that question back again?
Thank you for your answers in advance.
EDIT: I've just seen the other post about this, this one may be closed / deleted, sorry for the inconveniences caused.

[SOLVED] Pacman trying to install 64-bit packages on 32-bit system
I was upgrading my Arch Linux i686 install, and I got the following error:
error: The mirror 'http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch' contains the $arch variable, but no Architecture is defined.
I added Architecture = i686 to /etc/pacman.conf under [options], and when I run pacman -Syu, I get these errors:
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package clucene-2.3.3.4-2-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package filezilla-3.5.3-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package lshw-B.02.16-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
:: package yajl-2.0.4-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
Why is pacman trying to install x86_64 packages on my i686 system?

Seems to be looking for 64 bit packages still. Had a similar issue when installing another prog as well -
[SOLVED] pacman keeps trying to install 32bit packages on my 64bit OS
Hi,
I have just installed Arch linux first time (ISO as of 01 Nov). My OS should be 64bit (my hw is 64bit) but pacman fails on any package I try to install.
Example
$ pacman -S grub
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package grub-1:2.02.beta2-5-i686 does not have a valid architecture
So it tries to install 32bit package (and fails), but why?
My system:
$ uname -a
Linux archiso 3.17.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 15 15:04:35 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I checked /etc/pacman.conf:
Architecture = auto
and /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist (the first three entries are shown; all of the mirrors have the same format):
## Score: 0.3, Germany
Server = http://mirror.gnomus.de/$repo/os/$arch
## Score: 0.3, France
Server = http://archlinux.polymorf.fr/$repo/os/$arch
## Score: 0.5, Netherlands
Server = http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
And it is not only grub, it is any package (e.g. gamin, lxde)

and of course the mirrors added look like this:

Real trouble trying to install Catalyst Legacy
I'm kind of in trouble trying to install catalyst-total-hd234k package from the AUR
using yaourt to achieve this, enabled the xorg112 package to downgrade, tried pacman directly and makepkg, same result
It asks a lot of dependencies conflicting with catalyst drivers, so I accept to remove before downgrading to 1.12
It goes through like if nothing was up after downgrading, package installs without any error
Following the AMD Catalyst wiki page in here leads me to have a black screen after reboot
EDIT 2: Process of reproducing the problem I'm facing
- I enable the xorg112 repository on top of every other in /etc/pacman.conf
- Downgrade xorg with
# pacman -S xorg

let me paste form the grill:
I'm pretty sure that you didn't update catalyst-total-hd234k to version 13.1-28, because there I fixed conflict with ati-dri.
Comment by doblerone (2014-12-17 19:15)
During the last update, apparently there are some conflicts between catalyst-libgl and catalyst-total-hd234k. The suggestion is to remove catalyst-total-hd234k.
Comment by Vi0L0 (2014-12-18 08:14)
You are probably using libva-xvba-drivers which from yesterday depend on catalyst-libgl, i will add it to provides array after getting back home
Comment by Vi0L0 (2014-12-18 21:50)
13.1-29:
- added catalyst-libgl, opencl-catalyst, lib32-catalyst-libgl and lib32-opencl-catalyst into provides array to satisfy libva-xvba-driver (and maybe other that will come in the future) deps;
- added linux 3.18 support (i cannot test it actually, i can see it compiles fine though)
Comment by K3pler (2015-01-05 12:43)
Planning to replace my ultra outdated x1950pro for a less outdated hd3870 lol.
And using this driver i probably need to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16 to 1.12 from the aur, right???
Thanks for your work VioLO

Building fglrx module for 3.17.6-1-ARCH kernel ...
Ok.
Add nomodeset to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst , ie.:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda1 ro nomodeset
You can use the tool 'aticonfig' to generate an xorg.conf file.
--------------------- ^^^^^^^^^ --------------------------------
fglrx was added into /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf
atieventsd (needs acpid pkg) on systemd:
systemctl enable atieventsd
systemctl start atieventsd
For more info and troubleshooting visit:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst
ATTENTION!
To enable 'automatic re-compilation while system shutdown/reboot'
testing feature run these commands as root:
systemctl enable catalyst-hook
systemctl start catalyst-hook

- Then, I re-enable catalyst-hook (and optionally atieventsd) to be able to build modules at end and start of pc
$ sudo systemctl disable catalyst-hook
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/catalyst-hook.service.
$ sudo systemctl disable atieventsd
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/atieventsd.service.
$ sudo systemctl enable catalyst-hook
Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/catalyst-hook.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/catalyst-hook.service.
$ sudo systemctl enable atieventsd
Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/atieventsd.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system/atieventsd.service.
- Afterwards, I blacklist the radeon module for it not to interfere with fglrx:
Added "blacklist radeon" on the nano prompt below
$ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
- Then I generate the xorg.conf file, and get the output below with '# aticonfig --initial'

There's also several threads in the forum about the xorg7 upgrade. -

I cannot install gcc-libs-multilib... coz that asks me to remove gcc-libs which then results is the whole of xfce being removed

That is weird, since gcc-libs-multilib provides gcc-libs and should not lead to any removal.
try pacman -S multilib-devel -
[SOLVED] Trying to install Octave, gcc-fortran dep. doesn't install
I've been trying to install Octave.
I've found that down the dependency chain that gcc-fortran is giving me the classic mutlilib conflict error:
gcc-libs and gcc-libs-multilib are in conflict. Remove gcc-libs-multilib? [y/N] n
Does the package need to be fixed? Or does it really depend on the non-multilib version of gcc stuff? Any tips would be appreciated, I'd prefer to fix PKGBUILD and makepkg if I can instead of doing a uninstall/reinstall ballet.
Thanks!
SOLVED:
I had my multilib repository commented out in my pacman.conf
Embarassing whoops.

What do I need to do to fix this?It's a problem with Wicd, normally you can force update wicd and after that install gnome as you would normally do.

I looked for a solution and found that a
sudo pacman -Syu eclipse
would allow me to install Eclipse. The point is that I don't want to do a full-system upgrade because a more recent kernel will prevent the wi-fi from working on my computer.
Does anyone have any idea?

[SOLVED] Trying to install yaourt and cairo-lcd but says Error
I was trying to install cairo-lcd manually as I usually do from aur when after building and trying to install I get
error: package "cairo-lcd-1.8.8-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz" not found
Thought there may be a problem with it so tried going down the yaourt route but trying to install that gives the same thing.
I cd into the folder as normal build it then pacman -Q as root.
I admit it's been a while since I installed anything from aur but done it plenty of times to know what to do....am I missing something blindingly obvious?
Last edited by Andy Mack (2010-02-02 21:54:32)I did that so cairo-lcd would install, the problem I am having is pacman -Q* doesn't find the tar.gz to install

error: package "yaourt-0.9.2.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz" not found

its the same with cairo-lcd -
I'm trying to install splashy. The Wiki says that splashy depends on initscripts-splashy, whcih i tried to install. Pacman told me that I need sysvinit-mod which I'm trying to install. As you can see, there is an error when you did that and the reason is given "sysvinit-mod: conflicts with sysvinit". You must remove manually sysvinit with `pacman -Rd sysvinit` and after run `pacman -U sysvinit-mod-2.86-2-i686.pkg.tar`
If sysvinit-mod is already installed why does makpkg tell me:

[jordanwb@LAPTOP initscripts-splashy]$
Actually sysvinit-mod was not installed because of the error. -

How do I resolve of move past this conflict? I don't have any version of Gnome installed since this is a fresh install. Not sure what would be conflicting beyond the error above.

Sorry. This was my 1st time using Testing. So when I installed Xorg, I did:

Does this mean I need to do testing/* for Xorg as well?

Hi
I am trying to install Arch Linux PPC from the ISO on their site. I have run into a problem. When it comes to installing the packages I get and error about "key could not be looked up remotely" with different keys mentioned. I have tried changing the SigLevel to Never in /etc/pacman.conf but this seems to get over written when I start the package install form the installer (/arch/setup). How can I get round this?
Thanks
RobertHi
Thank you for the reply and information. I have gotten further. I am now stuck at installing the boot loader. I get an error that says:
Unable to find OpenFirmware path for boot=/dev/sda2
Please add ofboot=<path> where <path> is the OpenFirmware path to /dev/sda2 to /etc/yaboot.conf
So I have Googled and that ofpath should give me this information. But I then get this error when I run ofpath /dev/sdb2:
Unable to determind controller path!
Am I doing the right thing to find out the OpenFirmware path? Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks

Trying to install Arch Linux on a HP-dv2000 laptop
I am able to start up from, the CD no problem. I get the Arch Linux menu. What I think is the problem is maybe a resolution issue because as I go to install it, the screen looks wonky and I can't see the command line properly. I know when I install Ubuntu for example, the installation screen looks off to one side. Only after installing the nvidia driver after successfully installing Ubuntu does the screen look the way it supposed to.
I think the same think is happening here when trying to install Arch Linux. Any suggestions on how I can resolve this? This is a big deal for me because for the first time, I think I am going to learn a ton of stuff about Arch Linux. I am willing to take the plunge following the beginner's guide along the way.
Thanks for the help!!ArchLinux is designed to run whether in VirtualBox or on a real machine.
If you have a TV connector plugged in it will chop some regular lines at the bottom to make up for the difference in TV resolution.
There are a couple of packages related to nvidia hardware, nouveau is one of them. Just do a pacman -Ss nvidia for possibilities of things you might need to install. Your nvidia hardware is a little newer, so probably nvidia is the package you'll need instead of nouveau.
Are you using X? When you install the proper xf86-video-* driver it shouldn't have any problems with X. If modesetting is turned off, then some resolutions may not be made available (especially in Gnome), so it is best to keep it turned on if at all possible (kernel default).
