  • [SOLVED] pacman -Syu issues for a newbie

    Hi all,
After my very first installation of arch in my laptop, following the Beginners Guide, I tried to upgrade my system in order to continue installing wifi, gnome, etc...
after a Pacman -syy, followed by pacman -Syu, I got the following output:
    :: Syncronizing package databases...

after looking for something on the web, i found something like this in the URL  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56431 , but after deleting the /usr/lib/klibc/include/asm, I've got the same errors
How can I continue installing arch?
    Thanks a lot,
    Josep

    Thanks Snowman,
Well........ for better or worse..... I did "rm -Rf /usr/include/tunepimp" ..... then redid pacman -Syu and it appears to be working fine now.  I suppose I could have just moved the /tunepimp dir to something like /tunepimp-backup.... to be safer....but it did appear to work anyway.

    - anti-aliased interface fonts
    - gameplayer
We also ship the plugins, but most of these features can be accessed only
from the users home directory. Therefore, you wanna copy everything from
/usr/share/blender to ~/.blender (some are hidden files!). The browser-
plugin builds but is using an old mozilla API, this is why it doesn't work
    and we don't ship it.

  • PLZ HELP!! Strange issue after pacman -Syu

after running pacman -Syu and updating all, my system simply doesn't recognize any modules, and when I try to load them by  modprobe <modu name> I receive a  FATAL msg, even the hostname is set to (none) after reboot, I cant even get into   menuconfig   and now after some commands, the hdd starts reading (I don't know what) like crazy, and the system go all slow, I have no idea of what went wrong

menuconfig?  are you using a custom compiled kernel?  perhaps this is the source of your problems?

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
I had this error when upgrading.  I'm using arch linux on eeepc with kdemod 3.5

Thank you.  That solved my same problem as well.
But on my screen the text scrolled  by so fast that i could barely read it and I could not scroll up to read the beginning.
how can I pipe the output so that it does not scroll so fast.  i thought this was the "less" command but when i typed:
    less pacman -Syu
    or
    pacman -Syu less
I got errors in syntax.  I am a noob coming from 1 year using Ubuntu.  I have worked thru many errors to get this far in the install.
The forums where down so I was on my own and had to use trial and error and the beginner wiki.  im glad now forums back online because i never woould have figured out this klibc error on my own.

  • Had issue with pacman -Syu & util-linux-ng upgrade

This is mostly just a informational post in case anyone else has the same problem, or in case my problem is indicative of a pacman problem.... I hadn't been keeping on top of my upgrades for awhile, so that may be a factor.
I first upgraded pacman to the latest version, updated to use "core", then ran the full pacman -Syu .... it died halfway through because it tried to delete/move /mnt/cd and /mnt/cd was unable to be removed because it was mounted I believe... I tried to unmount it to continue, but it appears that util-linux-ng had been removed but not replaced at that point so I was missing my mount/umount commands (among others) (I'm making the assumption that whatever script was modifying /mnt/cd would have unmounted it for me if umount had been available)
here's the relevant bit of my pacman.log
(previous full sys update had been from around feb. of this year..)

seems like it's possibly unwise for pacman to remove packages it is replacing without immediately replacing them with the new one? Might it be better if replacements were treated as a single transaction or something?
thanks to bfinch for helping me figure out what was missing I was beginning to worry I'd been away so long umount had been replaced lol
    andrew.

The problem is you installed the 310 nvidia drivers, these require the nvidia-utils package version 310. But that version doesn't exist in the repositories because its already up to version 313. There is a way to do it but it will require a lot of work around's involving old packages manually. You will need the nvidia-utils 310 probably have to downgrade the xserver to xorg 1.13 and the linux kernel to 3.6. Then blacklist the packages in your pacman.conf so they are not upgraded.
Alternatiy you could just install the nvidia 313 drivers in the repositories and be done with it.

  • After pacman -Syu upgrade xfce boots black screen cursor

    Hello,
I've recently upgraded the system with pacman -Syu and it seem something has gone wrong with new xfce 4.12. I have changed DM from slim to lxdm and can only boot to openbox but not xfce. I also switch to tty2 and try a startx with ~/.xinitrc file with exec startxfce4 but it does not launch properly. What I mean is both the display manager and a startx boots me into a black screen with a cursor when i try to launch xfce. Again I can boot to openbox just fine. I've searched for similar topics but cant seem to find any solution. Can anyone help?

Ok i get that. Here is xorg log and journalctl -b log. I rebooted tried to login through lxdm and got the cursor and blank screen. I then tty3 and startx and launched into openbox to post these results. Still cannot get into xfce as normal user. Thoughts???

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after kernel boot after pacman -Syu

Hi, after full system upgrade with pacman -Syu, I get after the kernel boot black screen and everything is freezing. Then need to manually shut down the power button!
Normally when my system starts up after the kernel boot I get straight to the command line terminal login.
Can anybody help me how to fix this? Any clues? Any advice is welcome!
The problem is solved by downgrading to kernel 3.6.11.-1
Many thanks for the help from the people on #archlinux !

What have you done about the errors being printed to your logs? You could start by fixing the network error and the broken udev rule...
Are you still using intiscripts? They are no longer supported: https://www.archlinux.org/news/end-of-i … s-support/

I have searched for many hours and days for solutions on the internet and forums, tried some things, but with no results! I don't know how to fix the errors! Do you know how to fix that? I'm a total n00b! I'm doing my best as I can! Need help, thanks!

  • [SOLVED] Broken SLiM after pacman -Syu

I know that it's good to understand the rolling release approach from ArchLinux and that an update may have unforeseen consequences.
Yesterday I wasn't that smart and updated my system using pacman -Syu. I'm having the system with SLiM and Cinnamon on top. Now
when I login I get the message: "failed to execute login command".
    I already googled the error (SLIM+error) here: https://www.google.nl/#q=slim%20error%2 … %20command
And I've checked .xinitrc and slim.conf. everything looks just fine.
When I put in my ArchLinux cd, boot from it, /mnt my /dev/SDA1, bash and try to see what error I get from the system then I see a message
about PulseAudio (but guess my check was useless ). Anyway, my Pacman log is down here, my log from SLiM and Xorg.
    Pacman:
    http://pastebin.com/Pe03DVNm
    Xorg.0:
    http://pastebin.com/AhVnQvex
    SLiM:
    http://pastebin.com/3LdcUBPc
Am I that stupid? Guess so but well, who can help me out without reinstalling my system?
My image I built with CloneZilla was corrupted so I'm kind of lost for now.

    pacman -Syu went without problems.
    Thanks in advance.

The issue was initcpio ZFS hook. Evidently, if root partition isn't on ZFS the boot breaks.
In this case, ZFS should be handled by systemd service which will mount ZFS partitions from userland.
    Procedure :
inside initcpio console, manually mount the root filesystem, chroot to it and run init
    mount /dev/path/to/root /new_root
    switch_root /new_root /sbin/init
System boots. Afterwards, remove zfs hook from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rerun mkinitcpio. Also check that zfs.service system unit is active and enabled.

Trilby wrote:What are you doing?  Wine was never a problem.
I'm sorry - I was trying to help myself by following the errors, as reported.  It seemed that my problem stemmed from lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2, so I was attempting to remove those.  However, wine was dependent on them so had to be removed first.
I told you want needed to be done.  If you ignore provided advice and instead do other random things (without actually specifying what you are doing) then no one can help you.
Indeed, your posting did point me in the right direction, but did not appear until after I had posted about my experiment with wine.  Wine is no great loss, anyway - I've never managed to achieve anything useful with it!
As you indicated, my problems were resolved by updating package-query:
    yaourt package-query
Edit: In my searching, I did come across advice to use pacaur instead of yaourt - I'm not sure whether this would have made any difference in my case.
My analysis, wrongly or rightly, is this:
    1) AUR packages (some?) appear to list pacman version as a dependency.  "pacman -Syu" was attempting to update itself to 4.2 which broke the dependency (<4.2), even though 4.1.x was running at the time - there's a recipe for confusion!  This was resolved by rebuilding package-query before updating the rest of the system, because the latest version has updated the pacman dependency.
    2) lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2 (both AUR packages?) were in conflict - they cannot (must not) be dependent on each other.  This was resolved by pulling later versions during the rebuild of package-query.
    3) The libreoffice problem was not an issue.  My mistake was that I ignored a lifetime of experience working in IT - I concentrated on the last-reported error rather than the first!  All I can say in my defence is that eight years of retirement must have addled my brain!
In short, two, unrelated, errors, conflated with another, relatively insignificant, error message, led me on a wild goose chase.
I thank you for your wise counsel!

  • No ping / traceroute / google earth since Pacman Syu today

    Hello,
I did a pacman -Syu this morning as I do most days.  To be honest I can't recall precisely what was updated (kernel headers, glibc not sure what else - sorry).  I am now finding that while I can surf the web / be on IRC / dowload my e-mails - some things are broken.  I am not sure if they are related, but they were all working very recently. I use pan for usenet and it is giving me "no such process" when trying to contact my news server.  whois is giving "Temporary failure in name resolution", ping and traceroute are is giving "unknown host" on everything, and google earth "cannot contact  authentication server".
I have not done anthing to my network settings or router, and other boxes using it can still (eg) ping out.
I am nervous about trying a reboot in case I lose the connectivity I have, because I really need this box functional on the net at the moment.
I am baffled.  Any ideas please?
Added by way of edit : - I had both Firefox and Opera open. I tried closing Opera and on restarting it cannot connect to the net. I suppose that I will lose connectivity with other applications if I close them.
Second edit : So I got my head out of my rear sufficiently to read the pacman.log. Todays upgrades were :
[2008-12-16 10:15] starting full system upgrade
    [2008-12-16 10:28] upgraded kernel-headers (2.6.26.3-1 -> 2.6.27.6-2)

    [2008-12-16 17:16] synchronizing package lists
I don't know what could cause this apart from glibc.
I am also wondering whether this is the related to the issue metalforever reported earlier today with his "transient resolver failure"
It makes no difference to run as root btw.

I found that the problem was a DNS one.  ping etc worked if I fed it IP addresses instead of domain names.  I am using pdnsd, which seemed to be working so far as I could tell.  The daemon was running and "pdnsd-ctl dump" output the contents of what seems to be a valid cache.  I changed /etc/resolv.conf to stop using pdnsd temporarily and my DNS came back.
I still don't have the faintest idea why this problem has arisen.  I am too busy to try taking it any further at the moment.  Maybe I should cross-post this in the networking forum.

  • Pacman -Syu killed network performance

My system was mostly working fine, and I went on vacation for 2 weeks.  When I got back, I did a pacman -Syu (about 4 weeks worth of updates).  A lot was updated, and my Internet connection is unusably slow, but nothing else appears to have broken.  Google's search page takes 2+ minutes to load, and an actual search takes longer.
I have a netbook, so I am sure this is a problem with my linux box, and not the router, cable modem, or cable company.  CPU and other resources don't seem to be used.
I was (and still am) manually bringing up my network connection with dhcpcd when I rebooted before this problem happened.
I essentially do not have a network on the machine affected, so I am limited in what I can do to troubleshoot this.  I have not been able to get another pacman -Syu to update successfully due to this issue.

bvbellomo wrote:I have a netbook, so I am sure this is a problem with my linux box, and not the router, cable modem, or cable company
Working for an ISP, I can assure you that you can never be sure that it's not your ISP.
Give us some results of ping and traceroute to sites that refuse to work. Also ping your router to see where the slownes happens.

  • [SOLVED] pacman -Syu took an extremely long time today

    Hey,
this is the first time I've encountered such an issue:
today I upgraded as usual (pacman -Syu) but the process took an extremely long time
(~20 minutes). The last time I upgraded was three days ago.
The culprits seem to have been the libreoffice-still and texlive packages.
Has anyone else had this problem? What could have caused this?

  • Pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde

I did a pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde
Users can use keyboard in the basic console and this is a failure within KDE or the X-server.
On this upgrade I needed to add the portmap daemon to rc.conf.
I am running kerrnel 2.6.5-2. The upgrade lifted KDE to KDE 3.2.2. Xfree86 was upgraded previously and did not present this problem so the KDE upgrade is under suspicion.
My rc.conf daemons list is DAEMONS=(portmap syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond fam cups kdm)
Is there something extra I need to add?

    Hi colnago,
I tidied up my daemons, after considering how you've set yours. I agree portmap and fam are not useful. I now understand that the upgrade was leaning on fam so that it noticed portmap was missing... a red herring issue, perhaps?
I had no means of getting a dmesg log readout, because of the keyboard crashing. So I have patiently reinstalled kde 3.2.1, by way of adding the components one by one from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. That works, so I can now pause and investigate if there are any any known issues with the 3.2.2 upgrade that shed light.
I did get an indicator that the DCOP server did not function properly. This happened as warnings and errors, when I installed an additional user.
    Thanks
    gs
