Pacman + -Syu = system freeze

I cannot post console output because system freeze so i cannot cut& paste. My pacman output is localized so my translation may not be 100% accurate
After i pacman -Syu
i get a list of packages hit y
they get downloaded
then pacman is checking dependencies...done
then
i get checking package integrity and
then i get something like(note translation may be not exact)
memory security violated
then my system freeze...
I tried to upp one package by pacman -S and it was done okay
Really do not know what is going on
edit: my box is preety up-to-date i did full upgrade 2-3 days ago. I'm running stock kernel form current ,i'm not using testing at all.

  • [SOLVED] Failed pacman -Syu system update

I tried update pacman -Syu and gave me this message:
error: failed to init transaction (unable to lock database)
if you're sure a package manager is not already
    running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
    so I changed db.lck to db.lck.bac
and when I pacman -syu   pacman gave me this mesage:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
    any Ideals?

  • Pacman -Syu fails due to mime.types[SOLVED]

    Hi All,
    pacman -Syu results in:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    mime-types: /etc/mime.types exists in filesystem
Is it safe to mv mime.types and retry the system upgrade?
I have Gnome and KDE installed.  I currently use KDE and this is "the" KED4.1 upgrade.
    Thanks.
Last edited by whot (2008-08-19 01:03:49)

pacman -Qo /etc/mime.types, showed no owner for the file.
    Performed:
    pacman -Rn mime-types
    pacman -S mime-types
    pacman -Syu
System upgrade finished with no further problems.  Machine booted to KDE4.1
    I've noticed a few things with KDE4.1:
DUUUUDE, where's my data?!!? (calendar data, pim data, etc.)
It seems a bit slow to respond.  I don't know if this is a kernel26 upgrade issue or it's the first time
applications are being used so "things" are being set-up/configured for the first time.
All in all, smooth upgrade to KDE4.1.  Thank you, devs.
    Thanks for your help, fwojciec.

  • Computer freezes after pacman -Syu

Did a pacman -Syu and then rebooted after some programs did not work. When rebooting I get

sda is my second drive for backups and documents/music/photos
    sdb is the root/boot/swap drive
I commented out /dev/sda3 in fstab and arch booted up but got to the last line which is starting kde??(don't know for sure cause it scrolls by so fast) and then I get a black screen with a steady cursor. I cannot ctl+alt+ anything to get to a tty or out of that screen. So I cannot check any logs or files and I don't know what to do now when the only thing I have been able to do is restart the computer and the same thing happens all over.
I guess I need to get a bootable cd (live cd) to get arch up and try to get a terminal to find problems. But reading the instructions for live cd it appears that I have to be in arch first. I am borrowing a windows computer to get on the internet and research.  How can I burn a live arch cd in a windows system?
Or is there something else to try??

I'll bet that skottish will kindly ask you to not cross post and direct people to your other post: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65113

  • Pacman -Syu returns system up to date after a new 2008.03 (solved)

I just installed arch from the march 08 live cd (the new cd got stuck on the grub boot screen, but that is another bug for another thread).
I eventually got a totally working installation (installing only core packages).
what's strange is, i've updated pacman's package list and a pacman -Syu says the local system is up to date, but for whatever reason, no package was actually downloaded or updated. My kernel is stil 2.6.24-arch, my klibc is 1.5.5... What gives?
everything i read says all you need to do is run a pacman -Syu, but clearly there should have been updates from the core packages between march and now? (i know there has been, and that packages are updated constantly).
clearly i'm missing something simple here. Sorry for the stupid question.
(i uncommented the achlinux.org repo line in the mirrorlist, and i'm sure this is the server pacman is using).
    thanks for any help.

oops, my bad. that was a typo.
a pacman -Syu yields a local database is up to date
the first time i did a pacman -Sy it downloaded and updated some new dbs... but the  -Syu has always returned that the system is up to date, when i'm fairly certain it isnt... if i am running kernel 2.6.24, that is old right? i should be presented with some updates if i just installed the march live cd...

  • [SOLVED]wlanwep encryption is failing after system update(pacman -Syu)

After a system update with "pacman -Syu" my wlan encryption does not work anymore.
If I switch off encryption on my access point, I can communicate without any problems.
I have currently two wlans active, one with encryption, one without. I use the following iwconfig settings
    iwconfig wlan0 essid my_open_wlan
    iwconfig wlan0 essid my_wep_wlan key s:my_wep_password
In the first case I get the connection, in the second I cannot transmit over the network(Destination Host Unreachable).

Wep and ath9k has been buggy for me for a long time now - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Never got around it, adding "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" into /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf seemed to work for some time. You could give it a try. The network I have problems with is at the university, they use wep + vpn to connect. I can connect fine (like in your last iwconfig), but dhcpd times out.
If you have control over the network, you could just switch to wpa - safer anyway. Or search the forum for "atheros wep", it is a somewhat common problem I think.
P.S.: please use code tags when posting console output.

  • Pacman -Syu fscked up my system

I ran in a disk-full situation while running pacman -Syu. This totally and irreversably ruined my system . After downloading all packages (everything since the last full update of 20 august) it ran the usual pacman checks and then started installing the packages. After a few succesfull installs the / filesystem was full and installing failed from thereon. Yet pacman went on and on with the remaining packages, including a new kernel which also failed miserably and from there it went nasty. Messages from ldconfig about invalid ELF headers in libraries etc.. Yet pacman continued like nothing happened.
After it had finally finished, my system was unusable and also beyond repair. First i freed up some disk space (/bin/rm still worked). But pacman would not run anymore (segmentation error). Pacman --debug also crashed. Just about everything i tried to start, failed with /urs/lib/libetcetera errors about invalid ELF headers.
Finally i tried rebooting but that didn't work (it could not locate the root filesystem), which was no surprise having seen all the error messages during the installation of the kernel package.
I'm left with no alternative but to download a fresh iso image and continue from there.
With all the checks from pacman during its upgrades, apparently there is no check or warning for a safe marging of free diskspace. Wouldn't that be a nice feature? It also would be nice if pacman would just stop after the first failed package.

11639 is probably about the same issue. Although this person could still use pacman to repair his system. I can imagine more people could run into this situation.
I see pacman makes a estimate on required disk size before installation. Maybe just add some percentage extra as a safety margin?
And again, don't let pacman continue after the first failed package. A simple "Errors occured. Continue Y/n?" would be enough.

  • System "broken" after pacman -Syu

    Hi there,
I ran a pacman -Syu today, without reading the news, so I didn't ignore filesystem and glibc. Now the system is totally broken, cannot initiate new ssh sessions, and commands like ls or pacman, or everything I tried so far except cd gives the following error:
bash: /usr/bin/ls: No such file or directory
The system is not yet upgraded to systemd, I was about to do it after this system upgrade.
I realize this is bleeding edge, not bleeding flat, so I should bring my own parachute, but I have no idea how to fix this.

    You might try this
    Also, look at this article
Note that you cannot chroot in as you will have the same problem in a chroot environment.
Thank you for the suggestions. I tried it, and made things worse. When booting it says:
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uuid] ...
    Error device /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uuid] not found.
    Skipping fsck
Error unable to find root device /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uuid].
You are being dropped to a recovery shell, type "exit" to try and continue booting.
sh: can't access tty, turning job control off.
Very same on the fallback as well.
The strangest thing is, that the recovery shell does not respond to keyboard, while GRUB, and the BIOS did.

  • After pacman -Syu my system won't boot (It is not grub problem!)

My English is not very strong, so you can look at this photo:
    http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … 102os3.jpg
After pacman -Syu I rebooted computer and my system crash.
No hardware changes, notning else change, only I have done system upgrade.
A little bit more information /etc/fstab:
    /dev/sda1 /boot blablabla
    /dev/sda2 /   blablabla
    /dev/vg-home/home /home blablabla
Kernel is booting normal (located at /dev/sda1 ; HDD is OK??), but when system starting "software" and checking the file system / (/dev/sda2), you see in photo result.
    Any ideas?

I can boot computer from instaliation CD and mount partitions, it is not problem.
I have forgot about  emergency booting. But this problem is temporary, there is real problem:
    - nvidia-71xx is no longer supported and has been removed from the repositories. Affected users should install xf86-video-nv or xf86-video-vesa, complaints can be sent to nvidia for not providing compatible drivers.
nv driver doesn`t support direct rendering (and 3D), don`t?  And I can`t use more archlinux AND  other distros after updating to new Xorg?
My video card is Geforce FX5700 (not very bad and old card).

  • After pacman -Syu upgrade xfce boots black screen cursor

    Hello,
I've recently upgraded the system with pacman -Syu and it seem something has gone wrong with new xfce 4.12. I have changed DM from slim to lxdm and can only boot to openbox but not xfce. I also switch to tty2 and try a startx with ~/.xinitrc file with exec startxfce4 but it does not launch properly. What I mean is both the display manager and a startx boots me into a black screen with a cursor when i try to launch xfce. Again I can boot to openbox just fine. I've searched for similar topics but cant seem to find any solution. Can anyone help?

Ok i get that. Here is xorg log and journalctl -b log. I rebooted tried to login through lxdm and got the cursor and blank screen. I then tty3 and startx and launched into openbox to post these results. Still cannot get into xfce as normal user. Thoughts???

Now today, after a reboot, my wireless card won't activate (I normally run on wired, but I needed to hook my printer up and its wireless) and the system locks up and freezes at random times (it just stops...the display displays everything as normal except nothing responds. there are no log messages in everything.log about it).
I have determined that the wireless problem probably came from the firmware update since when I tried to start the wireless card it said:
    phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request firmware
My wireless shows up in lspci as an Ralink Corp. RT2800 802.11n PCI which is correct.
How do I go about troubleshooting these issues? I am very new to Arch Linux (it's been a week or so now) so I think this will probably be a handy skill to have.

Looking at my currently loaded modules (using lsmod) it would seem that my wireless driver is loaded at the module level:
    rt2800pci 9681 0
    rt2800lib 43247 1 rt2800pci
    rt2x00pci 5050 1 rt2800pci

    mac80211 395680 3 rt2x00lib,rt2x00pci,rt2800lib
    cfg80211 170074 2 mac80211,rt2x00lib
I also found some handy output from dmesg:

Since the firmware for this update just came out on the 27th is it possible something made its way in there and broke this? I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem and from all appearances it looks like it should be working (and it used to work quite well).
EDIT: One thing I am not sure about is that the firmware is in the firmware directory. Here are all the rt* firmwares. Is this correct or should there be an rt2x00 firmware in there?

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after kernel boot after pacman -Syu

Hi, after full system upgrade with pacman -Syu, I get after the kernel boot black screen and everything is freezing. Then need to manually shut down the power button!
Normally when my system starts up after the kernel boot I get straight to the command line terminal login.
Can anybody help me how to fix this? Any clues? Any advice is welcome!
The problem is solved by downgrading to kernel 3.6.11.-1
Many thanks for the help from the people on #archlinux !

What have you done about the errors being printed to your logs? You could start by fixing the network error and the broken udev rule...
Are you still using intiscripts? They are no longer supported: https://www.archlinux.org/news/end-of-i … s-support/
    # edit: not a pacman issue, moving to Newbie Corner
I have searched for many hours and days for solutions on the internet and forums, tried some things, but with no results! I don't know how to fix the errors! Do you know how to fix that? I'm a total n00b! I'm doing my best as I can! Need help, thanks!

  • Strange complete system freeze with no log messages

After the latest pacman -Syu, I've been having problems with hard freezes which leave no error messages on any of the log files in /var/log.
    I have checked /var/log/everything.log, errors.log, Xorg.0.log, dmesg.log, kernel.log, and messages.log, but none of them indicate any problems.
In the three occasions when the system has frozen, it has occurred when I press the "enter" key (twice while browsing the web, and once in gnome-terminal), but pressing the "enter" key does not always freeze the system.  In particular, it has not been a problem when logging in via GDM.
OK, the system crashed twice again after pressing enter while typing this post.  Now, I'm resorting to copying and pasting new lines.
As I've already said, log files show no errors or any messages which indicate this sort of problem.  The screen simply freezes, there is no hard-drive activity, there is no response to keyboard or mouse inputs, I cannot switch to other tty screens.  Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't have lights for numlock, etc., so I cannot do the keyboard lights trick to check for kernel panic.
This all happened just after the most recent package upgrade, so I'll post which packages were upgraded here:

Anyway, I removed GDM from rc.conf and startx from console. So far so good, no hard freeze in one week.
Edit: Sojek you also have hard system freeze yet you don't use GDM? Does your hard freeze occurs when you hit enter?
you can also start gdm from the inittab.

  • System freezed after "startx"

    Hello,
after updating with "pacman -Syu" my system freezes after boot-process at the loginscreen.
To be more exact: When X starts, all my input-devices doesn't react anymore. Even new plugged-in keyboards doesn't do something.
Numlock doesn't change lights on my keyboard.
As far as i know pacman shows me while updating a message about udev.
Pacman has updated udev, kernel26 and some other packages.
In GRUB I've appended "single" to get a terminal after booting and before X starts.
I've tried to reset X by replacing xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup, but no effect.
Everytime I enter "startx" in the terminal, I can see some white textboxes, but can't move my mouse or enter anything with my keyboard.
Hardreset is the only thing, that helps.
So anybody know what to do in this situation or has any tips for me?
I would appreciate it if somebody can help me... thanks in advance!

Yes, I have a .xinitrc in my $HOME.
I've tried several things and found out, that not X is the problem alone.
It's more the udev update, which doesn't recognize my hardware anymore.
When I type in startx in tty, X now starts with my KDE, where I could see, that stuff is loading (so it's not freezed).
But KDE alerts me, that some audio hardware were removed and even in tty i couldn't mount my usb harddrive or start my notebook-wlan.
So I came to the conclusion, that only my hardware were not recognized..
Is there a way to get udev recognize my hardware again? I've even downgraded udev and kernel26 to versions, which worked properly..., but that doesn't help.
    hope you can help.. =/

  • System Freeze And Blinking Caps Lock

After updating arch using pacman -Syu and rebooting the system, it freezes completely with the caps lock blinking.
It freezes completely means mouse pointer doesn't respond, can't shift to any other tty. I end up having to do a hard reset.
(Yet to try magic sys rq keys. Will go home and try.)
From other posts I have come to understand that the Caps Lock blinking points to a Kernel Panic.
My linux version is 3.7.5 (from uname -a)
The freeze happens while browsing the internet (any browser), and probably when opening pages with many images. (Doesn't freeze when opening arch linux wiki, but on opening youtube, facebook freeze!)
The freezing is not consistent though. Sometimes it happens when opening youtube and sometimes it lets me search for a video and when the video is playing it freezes.
No issues when playing videos stored on my hard disk.
    From Arch linux news.
A potential issue with the upgrade on x86_64 is finding conflicting files in /usr/lib64. All Arch Linux packages that had files in this directory have been updated, so update these individually first. Any AUR packages with files in this directory should be updated to install them in /usr/lib.
Could this be it? Am not sure what has to be done here. I ran pacman and then did an packer update on all packages installed from AUR.

This isn't your problem.  Try to provide the journalctl output for the times of these incidents.  A kernel panic should showsomething there.
