Page Ins vs Page Outs question

Hi Guys,
Could someone please explain... I have 4GB ram installed and when I look at Activity Monitor I see I have in the region of 38200 page ins and 0 page outs {when surfing the web as I am now} and a VM of 10.56GB. I just opened iMovie, iDVD, Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, Parallels, iTunes, Word, Safari and iPhoto, and it went up to 74452 Page ins but still 0 Page outs and the VM went to 20.02GB with 1.50GB of real Ram still free. What does it all mean?
Cheers
B

It means you have enough RAM. Page outs occur when data on physical memory, RAM, is "paged" to virtual memory on your hard drive. Having zero page outs is a sign that you have sufficient RAM.

  • Activity monitor Page Out question

Is there a way to get Page Outs to report the number of page outs rather than bytes ?
And when did this change, as it used to report in # of pages.... I think in 10.5

Sorry, but that cannot be changed. If you want a better report of that information then open the Terminal and enter: top then press RETURN. Top's information is more complete than what is reported in Activity Monitor. Also see:

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Page outs is TWO to THREE TIMES page ins

Have been having much trouble with a slow Macbook and have been reading on this forum for solutions. Please know that I have little understanding of any of this stuff although I do know enough to check Activity Monitor---and my page outs can be 2 to 3 times my page ins. Isn't that really unusual? Is my little Macbook in serious trouble? The spinning beachball and slowness happen usually after I've been using Safari for quite awhile, particularly with lots of tabs and images; if my Trend Microsecurity then decides to update itself, I might as well shut the computer off for the remainder of the night. This is what just happened this afternoon---I got on Safari for the first time today, watched one short video clip, then CRASH---couldn't do anything with any other program or window---then noticed that Trend Micro was updating. I ran Etrecheck at that time (took forever) and then like an idiot somehow lost that log before I could get to this forum. But the page outs were MUCH larger than page ins.  Last night when this happened, page outs were 2.85gb and ins were 898.9mb. One reason I'm confused is because Best Buy's "Apple guy" said I didn't need any RAM.
I'm including the Etrecheck I just ran but things have settled down now so I'm not sure it's telling the whole picture:

    > It's OK to have 8 gb if I still use Snow Leopard? That site said that OS 7 is required for anything over 8 gb
If you have 8 GB in a 2 x 4 GB configuration you can still run Snow Leopard.
These details are confusing.  I myself got confused so I chatted with OWC to straighten it out.  If you have any questions you can chat with them yourself.  Here is what I learned.
OWC told me if you use the 4 GB chips then you can run Snow Leopard.  If you use the 8 GB chips then you must upgrade to 10.7.5 or later (Lion).  If you use the 4 GB chips then you can upgrade to Lion or later.  I also note (as K implied) that for 8 GB total memory the 2 x 4 GB configuration will run faster than a 1 x 8 GB configuration.  So you will want the former.  I confirmed the 4 GB chips are compatible with your Model 7,1.  (That is also confusing on the web site.)
(K spoke about four slots while your Model 7,1 has two slots but the concept is the same.)  You want to fill all slots with memory chips.
MacTracker confirmed you have two memory slots.
              Memory Slots          2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
As K said, if you transition to Lion, the old PowerPC applications such as AppleWoks are no longer supported.  So if you need these old applications then you would want to run Snow Leopard. If and when you need the Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks features you can upgrade to those OSes.
If you ordered a 1 x 8 GB configuration then don’t sweat it.  OWC will gladly take it in return for a 2 x 4 GB configuration.  That is why we recommend OWC and Crucial.  They give excellent customer service.  To be polite I would return the package unopened.  You can chat with them on their live chat line or on the phone about a return, if needed.

  • My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (5.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.  HELP!!??

My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently.  My page ins (3.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here.   I don't know how to copy the pie chart so it shows on here but here's what it says right now:
    Free - 176 MB
    Wired - 592MB
    Active - 843MB
    Inactive - 432MB
    Used - 1.82 GB
    VM size - 198GB
The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/
And you will be a happy camper!

  • Slow Macbook pro, ~1 year old;  Really HUGE Page Ins and Page Outs size, think 400 GB In vs 100 GB Out

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro and it's so slow.  After scouring the internet a lot, and CCleaning my computer 359802 times and using Onyx, I finally realized why it's so s low.....my Page Ins and Page Outs are so big.  I have attached a screenshot that illustrates this.
I am not sure how my computer ballooned to this size, but it makes sense why it's like a turtle and is slower than my 4 year old Sony.
Can someone help me?? I am not sure what processes to get rid of and I feel like Google Chrome is taking up huge amounts of my Ram.  I mean yeah I open Google Chrome and run like 8 tabs and have Word and iTunes open, but my 4 years old Sony could run faster than this and I used to open like 12+ tabs on Chrome while running Word, Excel, Powerpoint, iTunes, and VLC on my Sony.  Which was nowhere near as powerful as this computer.  Supposedly.
    My computer Specs are:
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
    Intel HD  Graphics 384 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
I would really appreciate any advice to get this down to normal.....since I hear most ppl have page ins and page outs in the MB or even KB.  Right now I'm running Google Chrome, Word, Ppowerpoint, iTunes, and Adobe PDF Reader.  I don't think this should be too unreasonable of work load.
    Thank you

The problem is not that your page ins are big, as that value resets when you reboot the system. However, your page outs are are almost 25% of your page ins, which means you can use more memory for the applications you run.  A page out is done when memory is full, and the system needs to add something else to memory, so it writes some memory to the hard drive to make room.  The guideline to add more memory is 10% to 15% page outs greater than page in's, and yours are more than that.
Your MacBook Pro can handle up to 16GB of memory. You might want to consider upgrading to 8GB, which would double what you have today. OWC and Crucial are two sources for quality memory. $42 for 8GB from Crucial, and you can usually find a % off coupon on retailmenot.com.

  • What are you Page ins / Page Outs?

Got 2Gb Ram (would love 4...but..yeah), MBP C2D 2.66Ghz and just installed Snow Leopard.
Uptime about 16 hours, but spent all of this morning working with Illustrator CS4 and large AI / PDF files each of which was over 150Mb...and i mean opening and closing and editing and converting relatively intensively.
My Page Ins are: 2.4million - WOOO HOOOO!! a record for me i think
My Page Outs are: 147 thousand
Whats yours? What do you think?

'''''"I have had problems with firefox crashing for the last three month."'''''
You need to investigate the cause of your crashes that started prior to the release of the first Firefox version that offered crash protection, version 3.6.4, released in mid to late June 2010; that is just over one month ago.
<u>'''The crash protection feature does not prevent a plugin from crashing, it prevents the whole Firefox browser from crashing because of a crashing plugin; only the tab with the crashing plugin crashes.'''</u>
For information about report plugin crashes see: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Plugin+crash+reports
You need to post the crash Report IDs for the crashes occurring over the last 3 months. To do so, type '''about:crashes''' in the URL/location/address bar, then copy and paste the Report IDs (only) into your reply. See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes#Getting_help_with_your_crash
In addition, please do the following. Type '''about:support''' in the URL/location/address bar, on the screen presented, click "Copy all to Clipboard" and paste that into your reply.

  • Extremely Slow mid2012 MBP. 4.71gb page outs?

Hi guys. I use my MBP daily for design and illustration work. Generally I only run one program at a time, and that is either Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop. My 27" 2010 iMac at home can run all three programs at the same time with no issue whatsoever, but my MBP struggles with even opening one.
Lately, even on start up, chrome or safari take so long to open, they usually get stuck at the rainbow circle. No matter what is running, my computer seems to overheat within minutes and starts to lag, freeze, and sometimes even reboot itself.
It is near impossible to get any work done when I try to press an icon, and my mouse freezes on the way there.
I've been to my Apple store seven times, and all they seem to want to do is reinstall everything, but the problem persists.
Now, because of lack of transporation and time, I cannot go to the store until I absolutely need to get it fixed. I do have Apple care.
The last time the Apple store wiped out my computer and reinstalled everything, I asked them to remove Mavericks (it didn't cooperate with my school and works printer drivers), and it actually improved performance for quite some time.
I've also seen the colour flicker from a green tint, to a more grey/blue tint, and then it will return to normal after a few minutes or shutting the screen.
Here are my specs from EtreCheck.

  • Page outs

I thought it best to start a new thread with this question.
What are page outs? How do I determine how many page outs I have?
I did buy a gig stick of memory which I am using with the original 512 on my Rev A so I assume I don't have too many page outs???
    Dave

A page out is when the Mac puts some of its info in RAM back onto the hard drive to make room for new info it wants to hold in RAM. If you open up Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities) and click on System Memory you will see the Page ins/page outs. A rough rule of thumb: page ins should equal 10X your page outs. If they are closer together, you may notice more beachballs and delays and probably would benefit from more RAM.

  • Pages In/Pages Out ... came someone explain this please?

Ok, I've been told that the Pages In/Pages Out stats in your Activity Monitor is important, and should read a certain way. Obviously this is affected by the amount of physical memory in your system, but I'd like some more in depth info on what these pages in/out mean.
Right now, my iMac Core Duo with 512mb RAM reads:
    Pages ins/outs: 188682/152482.

Likemost modern operating system MacOSX uses a Virtual Memory system. Every process running under OSX receives a very large virtual space of memory (typically much bigger than the computers physical memory) thats devided into 4kb pages. The operating system is able to move these pages from the computers RAM to its hard disk back and forth as needed.
A pageout just means that, for some reason, the system just swaped RAM to a pagefile on the HD.
There are a couple of situations where these swaps have to occure. For example when starting a programm or switching betwene different applications - and there are situations where they only occure because there is not enough physical memory available.
Whenever a page-swap occures, the systems performance will suffer BIG times (because the HD is typically 100+ times slowern then RAM - and swaps occure on kernel level, haveing the potential to block the whole system).
If the computer is under heavy swap-load while performing an operation, its performance is limited by the speed of the HD - NOT the processor.
MacOS is a very memory hungry platform (For some reason it even got worse with the intel switch). After my experience, macs with <1GB ram are pretty crippled, under normal use....
Personally I really can't understand how apple can sell systems with 512MB ram - they just make their own systems look bad that way.
    Hope that answers your question...<br>

  • OS 10.8.5 on iMac grinding to a halt - fairly usual CPU but up to 7GB Page outs after starting Safari (I think)

    Hi
I'm running OS 10.8.5 on an iMac (early 2009, 4GB memory), which has been running fine up until today:
Applications started becoming very unresponsive, and eventually beach balled until it became unusable. Restarts didnt cure it.
Having looked in the Activity Monitor from suggestions in discussions here, the System Memory 'Page Outs' seemed high, at 7GB
For a while, if I didnt run Safari, it seemed to stay at 0
Once I've run Safari, the Page Outs keep climbing, even when Safari is closed
The Page Outs are raising at between 1MB/sec and 7MB/sec, which i think seems high based on reading people's comments
(CPU usage seemed fairly normal, except for an occaisional 'Safari Web Content' jump to 20% once in a while)
Im using Safari 6.0.5, and aside from Java being enabled (I've tried turning it off, same effect), theres nothing unusual about what I'm doing in Safari
Any ideas about what could be causing this / what to do?
    Many thanks in advance

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing softwre. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Swap used but no page outs

What would cause OS X, Mountain Lion in this case but I believe I've seen this in previous versions as well, to use swap space but not to page out?
    See:
Its been a while since I've had to delve into the whys and wherefores of memmory managment and paging systems.
    thanks

Thanks for that, it was a good vm refresher.
However after giving the doc a quick read I didn't see any mention of OS X use of swap vs. paging. Unless the term has changed meaning when a process was swapped its entire memory footprint was written out to disk. Now if my memory was all used up and I started a new program I could see the need to swap out an existing program to make room (but even this case, at least as I remember it the paging system would be used)
So my question still is open, what causes OS X to swap rather then page when there is memory available and what does OS X even mean by swapping?
    thanks
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - looking at the Activity Monitor page on the Apple site isn;t any help. They state:
    Swap used:
This is the amount of information copied to the swap file on the Mac's drive.

  • Page Outs and Swap Used

I'm considering adding more memory to my system.
I currently have 10 GB. I'm not sure how what to expand to.
I'm wondering what Page outs and Swap used means in Activity Monitor.
I just recelty looked at it and it shows:
    VM: 199.57 GB
    Page ins: 10.54 GB
    Page outs: 336 KB
    Swap used: 488 KB
    Free: 3.91 GB
Although, prior to checking, I had been running Photoshop.
While 10 GB may not be a huge amount of RAM, it appears that my system is, or has been swapping out memory.
Is that correct? As I'm not certian what these memory stats mean in Activity Monitor.

The free indicator is an instantaneous indication of how much was free at the instant you looked.
The pageouts counter is an incrementing counter that starts from 0 at startup and goes up when pageouts occur, and does not go down until you restart.
Pageouts are a bad sign because they indicate that at some point, NO more memory could be freed, and some was needed, so something important had to be sent out to the Hard Drive to make room. This slows down everything. Unless those numbers represent days of use, you could benefit from more RAM memory.

  • Getting high page outs.

Hey All, I am getitng a high amount of page outs. The 2 main programs I run are Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
I just upgraded my ram from 4gb to 6gb.
    My specs are:
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Here is what I am getting from activity monitor
    VM Size: 292.14 GB
    Page ins: 1.97 GB
    Page outs: 1.04 GB
    Swap Used: 2.76
Is there anything else I can do to stop this from happening? I shut the computer down every night and it seems half way through the day it starts getting sluggish.

Hmm, with the Swap at 2.76 it's almost like only half your new memory is being used.
You do have a 64 bit processor so it should be addressing all that RAM.
Run a extended #3 Hardware Test and/or use Rember overnight.

  • How to expose a page out of PS authenication

How to expose a page out of PS authenication,
Say i've a register page for a event page, i want to email blast that. how do i make that page available to user without a OPRID?, just like any other webpage?
    Thanks,
    Kaushik

You could create a user with only the grant to read that page.
Then configure the automatic login with this user of a specific web profile (and webserver) or if it is available for the current one used.
