Page item to hold SQLERRM

I am trying to catch the SQLERRM in a text field when a process fails and have it displayed on the screen, instead of on an error page. The book shows how I can create a generic error page. Is there any way to do this. This is section of code that seems to have the problem. PLSQL doesn't like # and the item shows nothing right now during an error.
exception
when others then
begin
:P3_SQLERRM := ' '||SQLERRM;
:P3_FLAG := 20010;
end;

Hi User515008,
The following code works like a charm. It is in a PL/SQL process that is fired by a button. When :P1_SOME_NUMBER contains a zero, the error is displayed correctly in :P1_RESULT.
-- ===================================================
DECLARE
l_Some_Number Number ;
BEGIN
-- Do a bad thing.
l_Some_Number := 100 ;
l_Some_Number := l_Some_Number / :P1_SOME_NUMBER ;
:P1_RESULT := l_Some_Number ;
:P1_ERROR_MESSAGE := 'No bad thing.';
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS THEN
:P1_ERROR_MESSAGE := 'We did bad.';
:P1_RESULT := SQLCODE || ' - ' || SQLERRM ;
END;
-- ===================================================
Have you checked :P3_SQLERRM in your configuration to make sure that it is not being reset to a default value? Check your session state and turn debugging on.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

• How to populate another page item based on cascading select lists?

Oracle 10gXE
APEX 3.2
I've created cascading select lists based on the examples (using Javascript and AJAX) that i've seen on this forum. Thanks for help on that!
Now that I have these LOV's being populated without needing to submit the page, how do I take the value that is presently in each LOV and concatenate them together to populate another page item? I'm trying to build the URL string that will execute an Oracle Report once the user clicks a button.
Previously, when I had multiple Select Lists with a submit, the URL was being put together using an After Submit Computation that would set the value for an item (P26_REPORT_URL) on the page. Notice that a report parameter (i.e. parameter name and Select List value) is only included if the user has provided a value. The page item that holds these values is then referenced by a button for URL redirect. The URL Target for the button currently is: javascript:popupURL('&P26_REPORT_URL.'), but will not work at the moment because P26_REPORT_URL page item is not changing based on what is selected in the LOVs. Since I'm not submitting anything (do I need to?), how do I put together the values needed?
Computation for P26_REPORT_URL:
DECLARE
l_param VARCHAR2(2000);
BEGIN
l_param := '&REPORTS_URL.&report=&P26_RPT_VIEW..rdf&desformat=&P26_DESFORMAT.&destype=cache';
IF REPLACE(:P26_OLO_CODE,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_olo_code=&P26_OLO_CODE.';
END IF;
IF REPLACE(:P26_BEG_DATE,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_start_dt=&P26_BEG_DATE.';
END IF;
IF REPLACE(:P26_END_DATE,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_end_dt=&P26_END_DATE.';
END IF;
IF REPLACE(:P26_ORG_CODE_2,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_org_code=&P26_ORG_CODE_2.';
END IF;
IF REPLACE(:P26_FLAIR_ORG_2,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_flair_org_code=&P26_FLAIR_ORG_2.';
END IF;
IF REPLACE(:P26_BUDGET_ENTITY_2,'%'||'null%',NULL) IS NOT NULL THEN
l_param := l_param||'&p_agy_code=&P26_BUDGET_ENTITY_2.';
END IF;
RETURN l_param;
END;

Andy,
This is a great suggestion! After I posted, I started looking at a Javascript solution and figured it's probably what I had to do.
However, now the cascading select list no longer working for some reason after I added the function to concatenate the item values. When I remove the showReport() function the select list works again.
Here is what I have in the HTML Header portion of the page:

function popupURL (url) {
w = open(url,"winLov","resizable=1,width=800,height=600");
if (w.opener == null)
w.opener = self;
w.focus();
function showReport()
var l_param = '&REPORTS_URL.&report=' + $v('P26_RPT_VIEW') + '.rdf&desformat=' + $v('P26_DESFORMAT') + '&destype=cache';
if ($v('P26_OLO_CODE' != '')
l_param += '&p_olo_code=' + $v('P26_OLO_CODE');
if ($v('P26_ORG_CODE_3' != '')
l_param += '&p_org_code=' + $v('P26_ORG_CODE_3');
popupURL(l_param);
function get_AJAX_SELECT_XML(pThis,pSelect){
var l_Return = null;
var l_Select = $x(pSelect);
var get = new htmldb_Get(null,$x('pFlowId').value,'APPLICATION_PROCESS=ORG_SELECT_LIST',0);
get.add('TEMPORARY_ITEM',pThis.value);
gReturn = get.get('XML');
if(gReturn && l_Select){
var l_Count = gReturn.getElementsByTagName("option").length;
l_Select.length = 0;
for(var i=0;i<l_Count;i++){
var l_Opt_Xml = gReturn.getElementsByTagName("option");
appendToSelect(l_Select, l_Opt_Xml.getAttribute('value'), l_Opt_Xml.firstChild.nodeValue)
get = null;
function appendToSelect(pSelect, pValue, pContent) {
var l_Opt = document.createElement("option");
l_Opt.value = pValue;
if(document.all){
pSelect.options.add(l_Opt);
l_Opt.innerText = pContent;
}else{
l_Opt.appendChild(document.createTextNode(pContent));
pSelect.appendChild(l_Opt);

• Set page item from a stored procedure

Dear reader
We would like to have a stored procedure to run every 10 minutes. When the procedure starts, the user has to be warned that the update process is running.
When the procedure is finished, the user should receive a message that the update process is finished.
What I had in mind was to set a Page 0 item 'P0_REFRESH' and set his value depending on the status of the update. Then add a dynamic action with a change event. So everytime the value of this page item changes, the user will receive a correct message.
Does anyone know if it is possible to set a page item from a stored procedure?
Kind regards

I found a solution by querying the user_jobs table. In Apex, I created two page 0 items that hold the current status of the job (online, offline) and the old value of the job.
Online of offline in the current status item is determined by a decode on "this_sec".
The enext step was to include a html region in P0 that contains some javascript. This javascript will display a message when the values of the new status is different from the old status ;)
Many thanks for bringing up the ideas.

• Page items not getting set upon login in APEX 4.0.2

We just upgraded our APEX in development from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2.00.07. While testing found that in APEX developer, unless we press one of the buttons (Debug/View Debus/Show Edit Links) in the tool bar on the login page, the application/page items are not getting set to display the conditional items (page regions/buttons/Tabs etc,.) Could this be some setting within APEX Developer?
But the display is fine when the application is run directly in a browser, as an end user.
Is anybody else having this issue? We are holding off our production upgrade because of this issue.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Radhika

Hi,
Could you please explain what you mean by
Running 4.0.2 version...need to know how to remove the pop-up login and go straight to welcome/splash page?Do you mean application builder or your application login page ?
If you mean application builder, you can not remove login page. You need always login to builder.
If you mean your own application then change authentication scheme

• Display page items based on Authorization Scheme...

I have a report form that shows all my columns, but I have two columns that I only want "Admin" and "Edit" from my authorization scheme to be able to edit; but I would like for "User" to view.
Currently I have "authorization" enabled for the two items, and set for "Edit". This works, except the "User" logins cannot view the items.
I thought of two possibilities, both I think I'd need help on though!:
1. Create a duplicate page item for these two items. One would show as "Text" only (cannot edit). The other would be "Text Field". The "Text Field" column would only be
accessible by "Edit" or "Admin".
The problem, though, is now "Edit" or "Admin" users will see both columns
2. Set up something in "Conditions" that would show as "text" for "User", and as "Text Field" for "Admin" or "Edit"?
I would have no clue how to do this...
Any thoughts?
Kevin L.

Kevin
You can create two items and in the Authorization Scheme you can set one as Users and second as Edit. Also You can do something using small JS. Create a variable P_USR_TYPE to hold the value of User group lets say 1 for Users and 2 for Edit. Then on the HTML header or footer of the region you can add a javascript call
function UsrCustomization()
if ( P_USR_TYPE == 1 )
// mark the item as readonly
// document.getElementById('P1_FIELD_QUESTION').disabled = true;
document.getElementById('P1_FIELD_QUESTION').readOnly="readonly"
UsrCustomization();Thanks,

Hi K,
One way to achieve a result similar to what you are looking for is to use a combination of pop-up menu for the initial choice and a slider or stepper to make the second choice. The example below uses a slider. The formula would be the same for a stepper cell in column B of Main.
Column A contains a series of pop-up menu cells with for choices: -- (no choice yet made), Red, Blue and Green.
Column B contains a series of slider cells, each with the same values: Minimum: 0, Maximum: 3, Interval: 1.
Each cell in Column C contains the formula below, which uses OFFSET, MATCH and the value set by the slider to retrieve the correct value from the Lookup table.
Main::C2, and filled down: =IF(A="--","--",OFFSET(Lookup :: $A$1,B,MATCH(A,Lookup :: $1:$1,0)-1,1))
Results for various combinations of the pop-up and slider cells are shown.

• Random page item data corruption

I designed an APEX page for a service request processing application with several date page items. Our database is Oracle 10g. The application is in production and the users have reported that data in some date page items become corrupted randomly. For example, the user enters ’07/04/2011’ in the date page item “Planned Start Date” among other values and submits the page. The date somehow winds up ‘07/04/0011’ that is, year 11. (A corrupt date increases the risk that these transactions will not be processed in a timely manner and will negatively impact the level of customer service the user wishes to provide.)
I have identified three possible areas that may hold the key to underlying cause: 1) page item edit mask, 2) page process(es), 3) DB column constraints. Inasmuch as this is a random problem and has affected a handful of rows it may not be possible to trace the logic as the pages are processed. Has anyone encountered this problem and can suggest a possible remedy? For the sake of clarity I placed the setups for the affected page item below.
Selected setups for P14_PLANNED_START_DATE, all unlisted attributes are blank or null:
Settings - Value Required: No; Format Mask: MM/DD/YYYY; Show: on icon click; Show Other Months: No; Navigation List for: None
Source - Source Used: Always, replacing any existing value in session state; Source Type: Database Column; Maintain Session State: Per session; Source Value or Expression: PLANNED_START_DATE
Default - Default Value: to_char(sysdate, ‘MM/DD/YYYY’); Default Value Type: PL/SQL Expression
Sample page processes are:
Validation - Name: P14_PLANNED_START_DATE not null; Type: Item specified is not null; Validation expression: P14_PLANNED_START_DATE; Always execute: No
Conditions – Condition Type: SQL Expression; Expression 1: :REQUEST IN (‘SAVE’, ‘CREATE’)

Validation Expression:
IF SIGN(to_date(to_char(to_date(:P14_PLANNED_START_DATE,'MM/DD/YYYY'),'YYYYMMDD-') || :P14_PLANNED_END_TIME,'YYYYMMDD-HH:MI AM')
- to_date(to_char(to_date(:P14_PLANNED_START_DATE,'MM/DD/YYYY'),'YYYYMMDD-') || :P14_PLANNED_START_TIME,'YYYYMMDD-HH:MI AM')) > 0
THEN RETURN TRUE;
ELSE
RETURN FALSE;
END IF;
Conditions – Condition Type: PL/SQL Function body returning Boolean
Expression 1:

IF (:P14_PLANNED_START_TIME IS NULL OR :P14_PLANNED_END_TIME IS NULL)
THEN RETURN FALSE;
ELSE RETURN TRUE;
END IF;

Ligon,
You're right to think this is pretty laborious stuff. A co-worker wanted to do the same, to make sure users didn't lose a change when clicking Cancel. I suggested he look at calculating the query checksum before and after, which he tried. But it got very cumbersome very fast and he ended up dropping the idea. He's fairly new with Apex, but he's also a quick study, so it's not like he's a novice coder.
I don't have his implementation details anymore to even share with you.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Good luck,
Stew

• Arangement of Page Items and Regions

I created an APEX page (version 4.0.1.00.03) named Request Edit with many page items for data entry of user requests. The form has a region named Request Edit that holds the data entry page items. Within the region is a region for buttons. There were two addition regions on the page below the buttons named Jobs a report region and Audit a Show/Hide region. The users do not like to scroll the page during data entry so I decided to place many page items into three new Hide/Show regions name Requestor, Recipient, and Service. I defined the regions and then moved the page items to one of the three regions Requestor, Recipient, and Service. When the page is displayed the three new regions displayed after the audit region. I wanted the new regions to display after the Request Number and before the Comments page items. I decide to change the Parent Region in the User Interface properties of the page to Request Edit for the new regions. That moved the three regions above the Audit region but after the Comments page item.
What properties of the three new regions Requestor, Recipient, and Service will position the new regions after the Request Number and before the Comments Page items? Is it necessary to define the Parent Region in the User Interface properties of the page to Request Edit for all of the regions?
To describe visually what I am trying to do imagine the following simplified page:
<Create> <Save>
Request ID: [________]
Requestor Name: [_________]
Recipient Name:[ __________]
Service Type: [____________]
Comments: [____________________]
<Create> <Save>
Jobs Report Region
+Audit Region
I defined three regions and moved the page items to them
<Create> <Save>
Request ID: [________]
Comments: [____________________]
<Create> <Save>
+Requestor
+Recipient
+Service
Jobs Report Region
+Audit Region
After I defined the Parent Region in the User Interface properties of the page to Request Edit it looks something like this:
<Create> <Save>
Request ID: [________]
Comments: [____________________]
+Requestor
+Recipient
+Service
<Create> <Save>
Jobs Report Region
+Audit Region
But I want the new regions to display between the Request ID and Comments page items.
Thank you.

here is how i got someting like that to work with a raoid group.
page HTML header:
<script>
function Show_On_Radio_Value_2(pThis, pThat, pValue, pLabel){
var rv = html_RadioValue(pThis);
var elm = document.getElementById(pThat);
var lbl = document.getElementById(pLabel);
if (rv == pValue) {
html_ShowElement(pThat);
html_ShowElement(pLabel);
} else {
html_HideElement(pThat);
html_HideElement(pLabel); }
}</script>
REGION Footer:
<script>
Show_On_Radio_Value_2('
P3_ENT_APPROVAL

','
P3_REJECTION_DESC

',"Y",'L_
P3_REJECTION_DESC

</script>
I think thats it but it should get you in ther right direction.

• Bind variable problem when renaming page items?

APEX 2.1 on IE6.
I'm having trouble with bind variables. I cannot reproduce this regularly, but I notice it from time to time. Basically, certain page items will simply refuse to hold their contents, even though the debug output says :
0.03: Saving g_arg_names=P9_XYLOPHONE_XYLOPHONE and g_arg_values=hello
0.03: ...Session State: Save "P9_XYLOPHONE_XYLOPHONE" - saving same value: "hello"
Whenever I reference the variable (using :, V(), NV(), or &.) I get NULL. None of the output indicates that it was changed elsewhere. I've noticed that changing the name of page item influences this. Shorted names tend to cause fewer problems.
I can't be more specific, as I can't figure out the pattern. Has anyone else noticed this?
Cheers.

• Getting incorrect coordinates, width/height of page-item in actionscript.

Hi,
I am developing a Flex extension for InDesign CS5. I am trying to get the coordinates and width/height of a page-item. But, I keep getting incorrect data. Please refer screenshot. The coordinates as I see in the InDesign application are 38.8, 66.02, 117.5, 160.5.
I used the geometricBounds method to get the coordinates and width/height, but I am getting 29.70, 40.26, 222.07, 178.11. Please refer the screenshot.
I read somewhere that the coordinates can change with respect to the ruler settings, i.e., it depends on Ruler per Spread, Ruler per Page or Ruler on Spine. But, I couldn't find anything related to this with respect to actionscript.
How can I get the coordinates and width/height that I see in the InDesign application through actionscript?
Thanks!

@poortip87 – make a rectangle with the coordinates ActionScript is suggesting on your page together with your placed image. Then you can see how this correlates to the path points of the rectangle that holds the image.
Further reading on geometricBounds and their relationship to other geometric properties of page items can be found here:

elsif (:MAX_EXP is null and :JOB_CODE IS NOT NULL and :MIN_EXP IS NOT NULL and :SOURCES1 IS NOT NULL) then
v_sql := 'select v_candidate_id, v_fname,v_current_employer,v_Experience_years from candidature where V_REQUIREMENT = :JOB_CODE and v_experience_years >= :MIN_EXP and source like ' || '''' || '%'|| ':SOURCES1' || '%' || '''';
end if;
insert into query_list values (v_sql);
insert into debug values (:JOB_CODE , :MIN_EXP , :MAX_EXP , :SOURCES1);
return v_sql;
end;
Please not that I am insertin the query into a table called Query_list and the page item values into the table called Debug thru the pl/sql function which returns teh query.
Now I select the data from the debug tables.
select unique(query) from query_list;
select v_candidate_id, v_fname,v_current_employer,v_Experience_years from candidature where V_REQUIREMENT = :JOB_CODE and v_experience_years >= :MIN_EXP and v_experience_years <= :MAX_EXP and source like '%:SOURCES1%'
select * from debug;
JOBCODE     MINEX     MAXEX     SOURCE
21     1     10     donkeyHire
And if I run the query in sql I get some records returned
select v_candidate_id, v_fname,v_current_employer,v_Experience_years from candidature where V_REQUIREMENT = 21 and v_experience_years >= 1 and v_experience_years <= and source like 'donkeyHire'
V_CANDIDATE_ID     V_FNAME     V_CURRENT_EMPLOYER     V_EXPERIENCE_YEARS
2     Vengu     Andale Tech     4
But the record does not show up in the report!
does this type of report parse page items as text?
Why is it so?
Waiting for an early reply.
Thanks,
venkat

Venkat - You don't want to put ':SOURCES1' in quotes like that.

• Text wrap on Master Page items

RE: InDesign CS2 on Windows Vista
Hello,
I inserted a graphic on both of my master pages and applied a text wrap to them. However, on my document pages, my text does not wrap around the graphics. (In the Text Frame Options dialog box, the "Ignore Text Wrap" box is not checked.) I know I can either override my master page items (and insert the graphic again) or control-shift-click on the graphic and force the text to wrap around it. But that puts another link to the graphic in my document...and I'm trying to minimize the file size.
Do you have any ideas on how to make the text wrap on the master pages work on the document pages?

Text wrap on masters is not honored on live pages in CS2. It was added as feature in CS3.

• Problem with dynamic change a page item value

Hi,
I'm trying to dynamically calculated the value of an item based on a simple formula that involves the multiplication of two elements from the same page.
To do this, create dynamic action as follows:
Event: Change
Selection Type: Item(s)
Item(s): P19_DURATION
Action: Set value
Fire on page load: TRUE
Set Type: SQL Statement
SQL Statement: SELECT :P19_DURATION * :P19_RATE FROM DUAL
Page items to submit: P19_DURATION
Selection Type: Item(s)
Item(s): P19_AMOUNT
When altering the P19_DURATION get no change in P19_AMOUNT
Since my knowledge of javascript is almost zero, I'm trying to do this with pl / sql or sql. Try the dynamic action with a function or a PL / SQL statement and nothing works.
Have to use javascript for this?
Searching the forum I think it's something simple, but I did not find an example similar to what I need.
Regards

Event: Change
Selection Type: Item(s)
Item(s): P19_DURATION
Action: Set value
Fire on page load: TRUE
Set Type: javascript
javascript Code:
amount = $v('P19_DURATION') *  $v('P19_RATE');
$s('P19_AMOUNT',amount);

• Discoverer Viewer Report with Page Items Slow Performance

I created a report in Discoverer User that has page items and parameters and runs fine (under 3 minutes) in Discoverer User, but when I try and run it in Discoverer Viewer it takes a long time. It took over 70 minutes before manually terminating it. I made a copy of the report and removed the page items and tried to run it again in Discoverer Viewer and now the report runs in under 3 minutes. Any idea why a report with page items would run in Discoverer user fine, but not discoverer viewer?
I am using Oracle Business Intelligence Plus 10g (10.1.2.55.26)

As long as you can access the middle-tier server where Discoverer Viewer is running, you should be able to run and view Discoverer worksheets.
While it is difficult to even start guessing what the problem might be, if the machine you installed Discoverer on has DHCP addressing, you will run into problems.
Thanks

• Report row highlight based on a page item

Is there a way to highlight a report row based on the value of a page item?
In my case I have a report where the application user requests data in a detail report using a column link in the master report. This loads an id number from my report into a page item (say :P8_ID for example). If this item is null, I want the report rows to all render normally (nothing is selected or the detail report has been closed). If there is an id in that field then I want the row containing the information about that item to highlight (its column link has been clicked selected it to bring up a detail report).
At first glance, this looks similar to Vikas solution (Change the Report row color when clicked but I am trying to make the connection between what has already been done and where I need to be.

After looking back, I discovered my value was being set after the report rendered. When I re-organized my calculations and the rest, it worked.
