Page numbering in InDesign CS5.5 not working
21 Chapters have been added to InDesign CS5.5's Book File feature. However, only the individual chapter numbers are shown, not the cumulative numbering system. Can anyone please help resolve this issue.
Eugene, sorry I can see how my question is not clear. My issue is this: I've added 21 chapters of a book to InDesign CS5.5 Book File. When I did so I expected all the chapters to paginate with consecutive numbering. But all I see in the column beside the chapter title are the page numbers (folio) that were created in each chapter. Since all my chapters start on the right hand page the beginning number is alway 2. Each chapter has used the same Master pages template and are spreads.
Hope this clarifies my issue. Thanks.

my iphone 3g keypad is not working. Letter "R" and numbers 7,8,9 not working. Can someone help me, please?
Idiabasics from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. Have these been attempted?
If you've tried ALL these steps, including setting up as a new device (not from backup), and you still have problems, then you have a hardware failure and will need to bring your phone into Apple for replacement. -
My on and off button is not working anymore and my iphone fell again today so the numbers 7,8,9 not working and so i cant enter my password to access my iphone. Pls, what can i do about this to access and change my password?
Changing your password won't help. It is a touchscreen so if 7,8,9 are not working then that part of the screen will not work if you were to get it unlocked.
TeeKnows is right. You need to contact Apple for a repair. -
Hello fellow graphic junkies,
I have a big problem. I am using Adobe InDesign CS5 on windows 7 and have been using it just fine for a long time now. Just today it started having problems. When I open a file everything looks correct and works fine, until I try to push a button on any of the palettes or control panel. The palette titles; ie. Pages, Layers, Links can all be pushed to open up the palette however the buttons in the palette do not work. In fact the weirdest part is that the buttons on the control panel can be pressed but they are off by inches, so I try to change the kerning and the font menu drops down instead however only the control panel buttons and cursor buttons can be pushed. Everything else works, dragging images, writing new copy, drop down menus like File and Edit, clicking cursors or gradients from the cursor palette. I have updated it, re-installed it, and nothing is working. Could this be a plug-in problem with Suitcase Fusion? Is it something crazy like Java or an error with windows itself?
some of my specs are :
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.8 GHz
4GB Ram
64 bit Windows 7
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Sorry I don't really know what else you would need. Thank you for your help!

What is the best way to preserve page numbers from InDesign to EPUB?
I have a project where the source files are InDesign based - the final step before the product goes to print. We want to bring this content to reflowable EPUB format, but we need to keep the print page numbers in order to support citations.
Has anyone faced this type of challenge previously, and what was the approach pursued? While an InDesign 2014 export to EPUB Fixed will preserve the page numbers, there will be a lot of cleanup required to make these files reflowable again.
AndreHi Douglas,
I agree that the common practice of removing the page numbers works with regards to trade content (fiction, non-fiction, magazines, etc) where pages generally are to communicate how far you have 'travelled' in a particular title. With reference works, however, this particular type of metadata can have a greater meaning - communicating to other individuals the location of a reference in order to allow them to see the reference in its original context. It becomes a way of locating relatively precise locations within a work that is being referenced.
Currently, and we can expect for some time, the original print content will be the authoritative version that is referred to, or cited, as a means of communicating the exact location of a specific reference to another individual. Although evident in many industries, perhaps this arises most commonly in legal texts, where a lawyer as part of an argument or a judge in writing a decision will cite a text reference by title, volume, possibly edition, date/year, etc. and, ultimately, the page number - which in the end is just another piece of metadata relative to the text that appears on that particular page. In order to create digital copies of these types of texts that can still function relative to the print authority, an accurate page number that corresponds to the print needs to be available somewhere in the texts. (This is true both ways, by the way - both in terms of following a cite to a specific location within the content; and citing a specific location within the content).
For many publishers, InDesign will be the final, what I would call 'exportable' format that can maintain a certain degree of information about the context of the source content and will have page numbers represented that precisely reflect what will be found in the final print version.
I have some ideas on how I would like to present this in a reflowable digital version (and reflowable text for this type of content is desirable for all the reasons it would be elsewhere - adaptability to screen size, ability to resize/change fonts for different reader experience, etc). And the new EPUB fixed export function will allow me to preserve the page numbers and through some programming I can get to a point where I can isolate the text that corresponds to a specific page number from the InDesign exporta manual solution would not be an improvement), but with a somewhat 'cleaner' export of the text of the content, where the precise fixed formatting is not so important.
The perfect solution would be to allow page numbers to be preserved within a 'hidden' tag in the EPUB reflowable export - so that the content of each page would be preceeded by an <a id="Page_75" /> tag, with words that are hyphenated belonging to the page on which they started. Note that the use of such a tag would also go a long way towards supporting the call for a "page-list" and hyperlinks as you've described them above. If the publisher wanted to make use of such a tag, it would be available to them - otherwise the tag would be ignored by publisher and eReader software alike.

Book Page Numbering Broken - InDesign 5.5
I've been experiencing some very persistent and reproducible errors with book numbering in InDesign 5.5.
Any feedback or ideas would be very welcome.
Platform: OS X Lion (relatively clean install), InDesign CS5.5 7.5.2, no plugins on test environment
Reproducible condition:
Create a new book, enable automatic page numbering (continue from previous section).
Create four new documents, to each add ten pages. Ensure automatic numbering is on.
Add each of these documents to the book.
Save the book.
Update page numbering for the book.
Result:
Documents do not display correct book page numbers in the book palette. They show document, not book, relative numbering. Each document displays (1-10) in the book palette.
When viewing the documents themselves, the first two document page number as expected: (1-10) & (11-20). This is also the result when exporting to PDF.
However documents 3 & 4 in the book take page numbers (11-20) as well, as though they were each positioned second in the book.
Tested:
I've tried alternative automatic page numbering options for the book (start on odd/even) with no change. UPDATE: on a 20 document book there are some sections that seem to restart as "pairs", so number restarts randomly throughout the book. Same document and book numbering options as described here.
I've tested with different numbers of documents, different page counts.
I do update the page numbering after each attempt, no change.

Note about large document test added.lilia@, thanks for the ideas, keep them coming...! Regarding these two, I've tried both already, no joy. Reordering document 3 to document 2 does result in it being re page numbered, but the "new" third document loses it's page numbers again (i.e. the book seems to be maintaining "pairs" of docs and reordering just changes which document is being re numbered).
Have also added using the plus button on the panel, same. Thanks for the ideas though.
Fwiw, this problem shows up on both existing books and new test books with fresh test docs. I've also tried the borderline voodoo method of exporting to IDML and reopening/saving the docs. Pretty much at my wits end. Well, a little more wit left, but not much. -
InDesign XMP Not Working with Live Caption
I have images in InDesign CS5 (Mac OS X 10.6..), and although they have XMP data (Set from Bridge), when I set with Live Caption, my caption always says "<No data from link>". I've set up captions in Objects > Captions... > Caption Setup - metadata to "Description" and the XMP data doesn't get put into the caption. I can see the XMP information in Links > Image > XMP File Info... "Description". That's Fine. I've tried other user-defined fields, "Title, Keywords" and none work in Live Caption. I've also been updating the images after setting the XMP data in Bridge. I've also just deleted the images and re-placed them. Still can't get live caption to work.
I also saw a related thread where a user set file XMP via photoshop (CS5), which I also tried. When I do that, InDesign CS5 doesn't see the XMP data (via Links > XMP File Info). I can see it if set via Bridge, but can't make Live Caption work. If I set XMP via Photoshop, I can't see XMP data, and naturally can't set Live Caption.
I could have done my project 5 times manually by now - but the fact this isn't working has been driving me crazy. Wondered if anyone has seen this or, hopefully, got it to work. And am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
MattI think this is a bug - probably in Photoshop (though the various engineering teams may disagree on this ).
Here's what I did:
Opened a TIFF image in Photoshop CS5, and confirmed that it had "Description" metadata.
Placed it in InDesign CS5 and created a live caption which DID work.
Saved the image as a PNG using "Save for Web and Devices" in Photoshop CS5 with metadata set to "All".
Placed that PNG in InDesign CS5, and found that a live caption did NOT work
Examined the PNG image in Bridge CS5, and found that the description WAS shown
Opened the PNG image in Photoshop CS5, and found that the description field was empty (in fact all fields were).
Looked at the "Raw Data" section in the File Info dialog box in Photoshop, and found that it was essentially empty.
Opened the PNG in a hex editor, and found that the missing metadata WERE there, but somehow must be formatted/structured in a slightly incorrect way which somehow prevents Photoshop and InDesign from properly parsing the XML, but not so far afield as to prevent Bridge from doing so.
I would suggest filing a bug report against Photoshop CS5 since it cannot read the metadata that one of its own components wrote into the file. -
Page numbers in Word TOC not correct; have to open doc and update
I'm using RoboHelp HTML 9 and Word 2010.
I generate a Word doc (.docx) as one of my outputs. The Word TOC works -- that is, if I Ctrl-Click one of the items in the TOC, I'm taken to that item.
A user just came up to me asking why the page numbers are off. Here's what I see.
I use SSL to generate the Word doc.
In the TOC, I look for the topic "Setting Up Comments." It's listed as being on page 30.
I Ctrl-Click that TOC item and it takes me to the topic, but when I look at the footer, it says this is page 28.
If I go back to the TOC, right-click, and choose "Update page numbers only", Word updates the TOC, which now shows the correct page number, page 28.
In other words, generating my printed doc is now a multi-step process:
Use SSL to generate the Word doc.
Open the Word doc and update the TOC.
Save the Word doc.
Shouldn't the TOC be right the first time around? Am I forgetting to do something?Your example was not the best, many chapters have such a topic. However, I am seeing issues there.
In another project I am finding the page numbers correct so I will need to do some more digging.
Meantime, given the problem can be recreated using the sample, you should report it as a bug.

Photoshop CS5 not working with Lucida Grande Regular font
On my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, I am running OS 10.6.7.
When using Photoshop CS5, if I try to use the font, Lucida Grande Regular, it causes an error.
"Could not use the type tool because of a program error."
When I try to open an existing file that has type layers that include the font Lucida Grande Regular, Photoshop will not open the file. I have several of these files that I want to use. I can open them on another Macintosh and everything works fine.
First I get a message window that says, " Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now?" I click on update and then get the following message. "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
I have updated Photoshop CS5 to the latest version, 12.0.4.
I have run the FontTest.jsx script and it shows an error for Lucida Grande Regular.
(IOError: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
- <no additional information available>)
The other 100+ fonts on my machine did not create errors.
Since Lucida Grande Regular is an essential font for Mac OS X, I re-installed OS 10.6 in order to have a new version of Lucida Grande Regular. After that re-install I am having the same problems with the font not working in Photoshop.
It also does not work with Adobe InDesign CS5. The font does work in Microsoft Word.
The program Font Book verifies Lucida Grande Regular.
Other fonts including, Lucida Grande Bold, work fine in Photoshop and InDesign.
What can I do to get Photoshop CS5 to work with Lucida Grande Regular?Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread. This problem has been dogging me for years, and it's so sporadic that I've been afraid of breathing the wrong way lest I somehow incur that diabolical Program Error dialog. I'd managed to reach a truce with Photoshop CS5, getting it into a barely working state, and avoiding all updates... until Lion came along today. Then I updated to CS5 12.0.4, and the Program Errors were back again.
Now I see that the problem does seem to be related to the Lucida Grande font. If there's a layer with that font in it, not only can I not edit that text, but I can't marquee select anything, nor drag any shapes. Deleting caches and massaging fonts are completely ineffectual measures... but if I delete the Lucida layers entirely, we're back in business.
At least so far.
Funny to think that of all the innovations I'd like to see Photoshop adopt, the fixing of this one issue is the thing I'd like to see most. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread, and any updates by Mr. Cox. -
How to center web page made in indesign cs5
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I hope I'll get help, because I need it
I've made a web page in indesign cs5, exported in SWF and generated HTML.
My swf file looks good, but my html file is not centered, web page is positioned
in upper left corner, and I want it to be in the center.
How can I put it there?
Thnx very much!
HrestaI know ID is not the best option for a website, but I need it that way.
I know html/css, but my generated html file contains javascript which
I'm not familiar with :/
There's no div so I don't know where to put my auto margins?
Simply on top of the html file?
Thnx anyway!! -
InDesign CS5 not recognizing font style
I recently installed InDesign CS5 on a Windows 7 machine. One of the fonts I have installed (both in the Windows/fonts folder and the InDesign font folder), Futura Lt Cn Bt, only shows up as an italics style, not a normal style.
The italics version shows up in ID and is installed in both my main font folder and my ID fonts folder. However, the "regular" or non-italics version, is also installed in my main fonts folder. I seem to have found a solution by finding a free download of this style (i.e. non-italics) of Futura. It created a separate font entry in my ID (rather than just adding a different style to my exisiting Futura Lt Cn Bt listing), but all seems to be working. Thanks for your help!

InDesign CS5 Not Recognizing Plug-Ins
After installing CS5, when I launch InDesign I get a string of error messages such as this:
"Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in. Please reinstall the InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin plug-in and restart InDesign."
To my knowledge, I've never installed a plug-in in the first place and I don't know where to start to reinstall the plug-ins in question. Why is this happening?Err, he tried that before posting, in post #13.
I've tried a full uninstall and the creative Suite cleaner tool and then\
re-installing and the same thing happens
Tom, I wanted to compare the Get Info output you had to my Mac
but I haven't had a chance to sit down in front of Mac interactively
to look.
But it seems to me pretty likely your plugin is corrupted.
So here are some cryptic things to check. Open Terminal.app and paste in:
cd "/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5"
find . -path \*InCopyExport\* -ls
find . -path \*InCopyExport\* -type f | xargs md5
The first sets the working directory to InCopy.
The second prints out the permissions and sizes of all paths with InCopyExport in the name (surprisingly many).
The third prints out the cryptographic checksum of all files (not directory) with InCopyExport in the name.
Output should look like this, but you might as well paste in the whole results (use >> Syntax Hlighting >> Plain in the web interface so the line endings don't get messed up):
$ find . -path \*InCopyExport\* -ls

Numbers 2.3 does not work anymore!
Help!
I am furious.
My old numbers 2.3 is now also not working on my macbook with Mavrics.
I can create documents in 2.3 but not open them in 2.3
i previously installed the new version, but quickly deleted it, since it is @#$%- software: it does not doe what I want.
The same for Pages.
I doe not wantt to upgrade just jet, but now I find myself stuck.
All documents that I try to open in Numbers 2.3 on my macbook do open on my iMac (still Mountain Lion) with the same version of Numbers.
I am an Apple user for more then 30 years, I have seen a lot of ********, but this kills them all!!
My trust in where Apple is going is whithering, I must say.
Doe anyone know how to solve the problem???Hi Jo,
If you opened Numbers 2.3 documents in Numbers 3 and saved them, they are now Numbers 3 documents.
You can revert them, but only from within Numbers 3, by using Menu > File > Export To... > Numbers '09
I have both Numbers 2 and Numbers 3 on my machine. Numbers 2 (Numbers '09) lives in a folder called iWork '09 within the Applications folder (it was put there when I upgraded side-graded to Numbers 3).
On my Dock, Numbers 2.3 on the left, Numbers 3.0.1 on the right.
I can run either or both at the same time. I just need to be careful to open a Numbers 2 doc from within Numbers 2, or Numbers 3 (big bully) will snaffle it if I edit and Save.
If you have docs that were converted to Numbers 3, download the Numbers 3 app again, open them and Export to Numbers '09. Then make a choice as to whether you delete Numbers 3.
Regards,
Ian. -
Dreamweaver CS5 not working with CS4 templates?
I upgraded from CS4 to CS5 of Dreamweaver today and so I opened a template up in CS5 that I made for my site in CS4. So everytime that I make a new page from the CS4 template it will look good in the editing view and I can edit everything I'm supposed to like it should. But whenever I test the page in my browser or the Live View it won't use JavaScript or it won't show me AdBrite ads in the page and it messes up my CSS. I have no clue why its doing that because the new pages from this template in CS4 work fine but new pages in CS5 from the template wont show up correctly. Oh and every other page that I made in CS4 works very well in the CS5 but the new pages in CS5 just won't seem to preview well. Do you guys know of any solution for this or how I can solve this annoying problem?
Any answers are greatly appreciated!!!One thing to note if you attempt JulesN's solution of moving the DIV tag inside the editable region... since this move is to a "non-template" area.. on many pages of your site it will simply mean the removal of the DIV tag outside the editable region. You will need to manually go into each page and add the DIV tag back into the editable region as Template updates do not modify the content of those regions.. I tried this today and had hundreds of pages instantly stop displaying correctly before I realized the logic behind it.. I was able to recover. However if you are using nested DIV tags as containers.. they are all either one big editable region or you need to wait till Adobe fixes this and use CS4 as I'm being forced to. I have submitted as a bug as well.

How Do I Pin A Tile To My New Tab Page, Instructions On Here Do Not Work.
These new FF updates are going to drive me to drink. It's a simple question, one would think, yet I cannot find the answer. FF29 has "tiles", I suppose they are called, when you click on "new tab page". At one point, I had them all on there...how, I don't remember.
Now, my "tiles" are disappearing. I have changed NOTHING. How do I re-add the websites I want to those tiles?
Before someone gives me the generic answer with the link, I will tell you that I already went to this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites
Those instructions do not work. I do not have any little pin in those squares. When I go to a website that I usually go to, the only option I get is "Pin Tab" but that only adds a tab at the top of the browser window, it does NOT add it to the tiles, like I want.
I've tried the "Show All Bookmarks" route, and tried to drag the bookmark to a tile, it does NOT work.
There are 9 tiles. If I want to change them around, or re-add the 4 that have mysteriously disappeared today, HOW do I do that? Again, those blank tiles do NOT show a "pin" anywhere. They were set up, then they started to disappear. Again, I've changed NOTHING. It should not be this difficult to add a website to my tiles on my new tab page. What troubleshooting information would you like. I posed a question, you tell me what you would like to see.
I know how to open my about:config, this isn't my first time on the internet.
You said: "You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page to see if it still has the default about:newtab value."
Yes, it does. What else would you like to know so that this can be fixed?
I also stated in my very first post that the link you just linked to, (that I also linked to so everyone was aware of what link I'm talking about), I already tried and it doesn't work. Do you guys even read what we put up or do you just hand out random, generic answers?
