Page numbering Panel

hello indesigners.
i have a made 10 spreads.and im trying to get my book to start counting the page numbers from
page 6 and beyond.i have insert on my mastrer pages current page number.whic is counting perfect
through out my spreads.the only thing is i would like from page6  and beyond to be 1 2 3 4 5 6.
but when i open up the numbering and sections options, when i type in the dialogue box start page numbering from 6
page 6 becomes 12!instead of 1.
thank you.

Did you have page 6 selected to start a new section?
Once you do that page 6 should become a new page 1, and two things will happen, when you press OK. ID will complain about duplicate page numbers, which can be fixed by going back to the first page inthe doc, opeing the numbering options again and changing the style of the numbers, and all of you pages after the fifth one will change sides and you'll see two right-hand pages in a row in the pages Panel.
ID doesn't like putting odd numbers on the verso (left-hand page) as it flies in the face of tradition and reader expectations. It can be done, but in my opinion you really should add a blank page instead if you have five pages of front matter before the start of the document. If you really want to swap sides with the numbering, before you change the numbering options, select the spread, right-click, and unchek Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle. Ifd asked if you want to maintain the same number of pages inthe spread, say yes.

  • Page numbers in page panel don't match current page numbers

    Hi all,
I have been working with InDesign for a decade now and never had this problem.
I created a document in InDesign CS 5.5, very simple and with consecutive pages, no sections etc.
My page numbers show up correctly on my spreads. BUT, for some reason, the numbers that are shown in the page panel, underneath the page icons, are different. The first page is named "11", followed by 12-17, then the numbers jump to 111, 112 etc. I selected all pages and chose "Numbering and Section Options", setting them all to automatic page numbering, but to no avail.
As I said, the actual page number on the page is unaffected. But this bugs me since I am afraid that the document is somehow messed up.
I am using a simple InDesign document, no book file.
Any idea why this would happen?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you - I just found the solution to my problem (after playing around some more), and it turns out to be rather simple. In Numbering & Section Options, the Section Prefix was set to "1" - this field needs to be clear. That's why InDesign would add a 1 to every number.

  • InDesign CS4 page numbering not displaying correctly in Pages Panel

    Hello,
I searched the forums for a solution to my problem before posting. I am sorry if I'm doubling someone's question but here I go:
I noticed this problem I have about 6 month ago. When I create a simple document with automatic page numbering everything is fine. When I try and create a section (i.e. I want my numbering to start at 1 at page 3) it actually works however in the Pages Panel the pages are displayed with their basic numbers. You will agree this is rather confusing. I've tryed different files, same files on different computers and so on. The problem has to do with my installation of InDesign CS4 and I suppose it's some kind of a display option I accidentally turned on.
Could someone please suggest a solution? Thank you!

  • Working on existing document; two forms of page numbers (starts as i,ii,iii and moves to 2,3,4)

I inherited a facing-pages document with two master pages. They are supposed to have page numbers in them (1,2,3,4 etc) but the first few pages of the document are i,ii,iii etc. and I can't figure out how to change them. Can anyone help?

That's pretty standard formatting for a document divided into sections withthe first section containing front matter and the "real" page 1 appearing further into the file. What's the first page number after the i, ii,iii ... series?
Number style is changed by slecting the first page of a section (it will have a small triangle above it) in the Pages panel and going to the Numbering And Section Options where you will find a drop-down for number style. It's a bad idea to have multiple pages with the same logical page number using the same number style, and ID will complain.

  • Document page numbers in pages palette?

I just jumped from CS to CS5. I work in magazine spreads most of the time and would like the pages palette to reflect my document page numbering. All I can get it to show is 1, 2, 3, etc. with 1 starting on the LEFT page of the thumbnail spread, whereas the my document spreads always start on EVEN-numbered (left) pages. I have no trouble numbering the document itself any way I want, it's just the palette. Was not a problem in CS, it always showed my document page numbers below the thumbs. Is there a menu setting I am not finding?

Can you post a screen capture of your Pages Panel (they officially became panels instead of palettes in CS4, or maybe CS3)? Use the little camera icon on the web screen to embed it in your post.
The only things that's changed significantly about the Pages Panel/Palette is the addition of page thumbnails, so if you aren't seeing page numbers that match the numbers assigned (if you are viewing section numbering rather than absolute numbering -- a preference choice), then there is something wrong with the program. The first step with oddities like this is to Replace Your Preferences

  • Page numbers are repeating in Page Thumbnail view.

Using Adobe Actobate XI Standard with Windows.  When I in insert another adobe document into my current document (by either using the tool Insert from File or dragging it from another screen), my page numbers in the thumbnails get the same page number.  For example, original document is 5 pages, insert a page 6 from somewhere else and it is now listed as a second page 5.  Insert a page 7 and now I have three that are labeled page 5.  How can I stop/fix this.  Thanks

Those are page labels, not page numbers, and they don't have to be in order, or to use the same scheme.
To set them all as the actual pages numbers click the Options button in the Pages panel and then select Number Pages. Select "All" and then your numbering scheme and you're done.

  • How do I 'assign a higher layer to the object on the master' (page numbers on master) I understand the layer needs to be at the top to show above placed images on pages but how do I do this?

I've added the page numbers to my master pages. They are displaying on the pages but I have images on the individual pages that are covering the numbers. I understand I need to assign a higher layer to the object but I don't understand how to do that. Please help me? Please explain a simply clearly as possible, I've read other answers but still don't understand. Wish it was as simple as select object, right click, edit layer!
    Many thanks!

    Layers panel;
    Create new layer
    Switch to Master page
Make sure new layer is on top in the Layers panel, if not drag the layer on top in the Layers panel.
Select (click once on) that top layer (pen symbol appears behind that layer in the Layer panel)
Now draw your page numbers etc on the Mastet page
From now on, select (click once on) any Layer in the Layers panel that is below the layer you used on your Master page items and create new objects in your document pages.
If you accidently created objects on a 'wrong' layer:
    Select those objects
You will see a square behind the layers name in the Layers panel
Click and hold the mouse on that square and drag it behind the name of the layer you want to move the objects to.

  • Automatic page numbering not working in book files

Hi. Using CS3, I have successfully created a book in the past, where the dialog box of the book file shows consecutive page numbers for each file.
    e.g file 1 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
file 2 5-22 (indicating 18 pages, starting on page 5) etc.
Files automatically renumber if I insert pages, etc.
This next book I am creating has two problems:
    1. the book file dialog box shows
file a 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
file b 1-6 (indicates 6 pages - STARTS ON PAGE 5 AS IS IS SUPPOSED TO, in some cases - see problem 2).
    I've followed the protocol below:
For the first document, I select "start page numbering at" and enter "1". For the rest of the files, I select the automatic page numbering radio button.
Why won't the dialog box reflect, for file b, pages being 5-11 as it is supposed to? This will get very confusing as the document gets larger.
    2. I created a document by resaving an initial file as a new file in order to create additional documents, keeping the same master but changing content. Even with the automatic page numbering radio button selected, some of these files start on the wrong page (e.g. 5 when the file is supposed to start on 12), after I select Update Page and Section numbers from the book dialog drop-down. I can't figure out what may forcing an override of this page numbering and am looking for a pointer in the right direction...thank you,
    Erin

I am having the same exact problem as Erin. The page numbers don't even get updated correctly on the documents within the book.
I'm using InDesign CS3 5.0.3 on Win XP.
For the first document in the book, "Start Page Numbering at:" is set to "1." "Chapter Number:" is set to 1.
For the second and third+ documents in the book, "Automatic Page Numbering" is selected, as is "Continue from Previous Document in the Book."
In the Book panel, all documents show page "1-x". When I open the second and third+ documents, the page numbers all start at page 2.
Any ideas? Please tell me this is a documented bug because it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

  • Can I move pages/reorder page numbers by moving bookmarks?

I'm using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard and in a different version of Adobe I used to be able to renumber the pages by dragging and moving the bookmarks. I see that I can do this using the thumbnails but I can't see the content well enough in the thumbnail view to know which one to move.

fwiw - I've used each release of  Acrobat since release "3". In no release has moving Bookmarks renumbered pages. As you've noted page numbering via PageLabel (from within the Pages panel) is doable - that's how it has been with each release.
    Be well...

  • My InDesign document has two page 1s and I can't get the page numbers to work.  Help!

My InDesign document has two page 1s and I can't get the page numbers to work.  Help!  How do I fix this?

Do you mean the first section is starting at page one?
And the second one now is starting at page two?
So I would ask why you would need sections at all?
Did you set the controls for Automatic Page Numbering?
If you select the particular page where section two is starting in the Pages Panel, you could untick the Start Section option in the numbering and section dialog. That would remove the section. You cannot do that with the very first section, but you should set the first section to Automatic Page Numbering if you ever want to use your document with an inDesign book file.

  • Oracle Reports - page numbering for repeating frames

    Hello,
I have an Oracle Report that has one parent repeating frame containing several children repeating frames. One repeating frame has a maximum of three records per page. If the records do not exceed the maximum, page numbering is fine. If there are more than three records it creates a new page. The new page appends to the end of the report and throws off the page numbering. I changed the source of the page numbering from page number to panel number. The panel number gives the best results. All pages are numbered with the exception of the appended page(s). Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

YES!!!, change the PRINT condition of your
panel field to ALL instead of FIRST.

  • What is correct way to make a PDF reader, read the page numbering? (for accesibility in indesign 5.5

What I have to do to make the reader read pdfs page numbering is in the page layout in InDesign CS5.5?
I read that unlinking the numbering of the page layout and then including it in panel articles with the other elements. Is it true?
    Is this the way?
    thanks

But page numbers do defenitively not belong to the text structure, neither do running headers and footers. As far as I understand these items are disturbing when reading pages.
I am not blind and neither peronally I don't know any. But I suppose there are other means as reading marks for them as page numbers.

  • Page Numbering when merging a document

    Please help!
I am presently working a trial copy of CS3 and trying to figure if I will convert from PM7.
I publish a 12 page newsletter each month with a merge of name and address. The merge works but the page numbers continue after the first set of pages.
In other words p1-p12 is the first set and p13-p25 is the second and so on, but I want to retain the original page numbering of p1-p12 for each merged set.
Can anyone guide me to get this to work?

No Problem. I'm presuming you don't have a merge-in-print-stream workflow available, so you need to make, ultimately, a 6,000 page document (as I said, this is not the ideal solution). That's the way Data Merge works in ID.
Create a twelve page facing-pages doc to start, and add the fields you need for mailing addresses to the first or last page, and the rest of your fixed content wherever it belongs. Since all of the content is static except for the address info, you can actually build the entire document on master pages, if you wish, using a different master for each page, but it's pretty much six of one, half-dozen of the other. The advantage to putting the fields on the master page is you can update the data file. DON'T ADD AUTO PAGE NUMBERS. Put real numbers on pages 1-12, and they'll repeat along with the rest of the stuff.
With the document set up this way, execute the merge (you can test it by doing a limited number of records). You should get a document with all pages repeating, in order, and the merged addresses.
In my test run the last page of one set was shown separately from the following first page of the next set in the pages panel, and if you open the panel menu and uncheck the "allow document pages to shuffle" option, they will stay that way. It makes no difference for printing, but it is more intuitive to keep them broken apart.
To print, use Print Booklet, and set up as two-up perfect bound with a signature size of 12. You could also do this with a 4, 8, or 16 page newsletter with a corresponding signature size count. Set the page size to landscape tabloid in the print options, and check the preview. Should be good to go. Go fishing while you wait for it to spool those 6,000 pages.
The good news is that the same 12-page base document should work with a commercial Xerox or other high volume copier/printer that has a data-merge module in the RIP (though you might have to do the imposition yourself, and there are scripts for that that work just fine), so you have to do the same work either way.

  • Can page numbering start on a left-hand page?

A question arose here yesterday regarding automatic page numbering.
Is it possible to do it so that odd numbers come on left-hand pages and even numbers on the right?
I know this is highly unusual, but can it be done?

    Yes,
    For Example:
    Start a New Document.
Go to pages panel and turn off the check mark for "Allow Document Pages to Shuffle"
Then go to the first page in the pages panel and go to Numbering and Section Options
Set the "Start Page Numbering" to "2".
And now Page 2 is a recto, and Page 3 is a verso, Page 4 is recto and so on.
It doesn't make it easy for shuffling pages around though. But it can be done. Perhaps others have more elegant way?
I can think of a way to do it using the Book Panel - that is if this doesn't suffice?

  • Adding a 'background' to page numbering

    Hi,
I have a large document which includes multiple PDFs that have been imported into the appendices.
I want to turn page numbering on so all the pages are numbered, which is easy enough of course.
The problem I have is that some of the pages (in the appendices) follow totally different formats or may have graphics and text where the page numbering is and therefore you are unable to see the page numbering on these pages.
Is it possible to format the page numbering in a way so that it always shows up - perhaps say a white box so it appears on top of other page elements?
    Many thanks.
    I'm using Acrobat XI.

A 'background' layer always drops to the bottom of the stack, hence the name.
A 'watermark' layer can be on top or beneath, but if it's on top and left editable it will be above the header/footer too, so you need to flatten it as got go:
Create your 'whiteout' boxes using the Watermark tool.
Open the Layers panel on the left sidebar in Acrobat.
Click the tools dropdown and choose Flatten Layers, agree to the warning
Now use the header/footer tool to add the page numbers on top
