Page Numbers in Long Documents

I'm planning on using Pages to create personal "books," documents which are long enough to contain several "chapters." I know that I can break up a document into different sections, which each chapter becoming a new section, but I worry about document safety.
If I start each chapter in a new document (titled Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.) which is opened from a template of the first document, I would have everything I need (styles, layouts, etc.); Document 1 (Chapter 1) would be "frozen" as saved.
My problem is that I cannot seem to start the pagination in Chapter 2 with the correct number. I have tried selecting the page number in the footer, opening the Layout Inspector and typing in a new starting number for the document, but I cannot enter the appropriate field.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I don't know if the operating system has any effect on this. We purchased a "Family Edition" iWork '08 which is installed on the main machine listed below and also on a iBook PowerPC GR using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
The problem is occurring on the iBook (my husband is using the other machine at this moment).

Thank you so much. That solved my problem.
It is surprising (and humbling) to learn what you didn't understand that is now crystal clear. I did try to understand this from the documentation and from earlier posts, but I was missing the vital location of placing your cursor in regular text.
Thank you again for your help. I'll probably be back here on a daily basis.

  • Add page numbers to a document in Pages

    How do I add page numbers to a document in Pages on the iPhone?

    When I tap the spanner I don't see Document set up.
    I see this:

  • How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing. I do not want the page numbers the software automatically places into my document.

    How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing? The title page is blank, I can type in 1 on the 1st typed page, but the #1 automatically goes into the next page and will not change.

    Click at bottom of the first page:
    Menu > Insert > Section break
    Click somewhere in the 2nd page (not the header/footer)
    Inspector > Layout > Section > Page Numbers > Start at 1 > Configuration > uncheck use previous headers and footers
    Click into the header or footer of the second page:
    Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers…
    If there is anything in the header or footer on the first page that you don't want just select it and delete it.
    If you really wanted to manual place page numbers on each page you will have to use a section break between each and every page. I can't imagine that would be useful.

  • I'm a Dropbox user and I migrate between my iMac and a Toshiba notebook.  Is there Apple software that will work on the notebook allowing me to open Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents that I've placed in Dropbox?

    I'm a Dropbox user and I migrate between my iMac and a Toshiba notebook.  Anyone know if there is Apple software that will work on the Toshiba that will allow me to open Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents when I access them in Dropbox?
    Maybe I should just always export from Pages into Word  (and likewise for the other types) before I upload to Dropbox?  I hope not!!

    If you don't want to export files and consider the Microsoft formats to be your basic working format, then you need to consider either using MsOffice for Mac or LibreOffice instead of the iWork suite.
    You could always run a virtualised OSX on the Toshiba, but I don't think Apple will appreciate me telling you how to do that.

  • How do I add page numbers to a document in Pages 5.2

    How do I add page numbers  to a document in Pages 5.2?   I'm sure there's some way to do this but it's less obvious than in the previous version of Pages.

    Click on one of the Header or Footer fields and you will get a pop-up asking if you want to add page numbers, and a choice of formats.
    You also may use Insert > Page Number.

  • Dynamic Page Numbering for DPS documents

    Since we don't have just 1 document for the entire publication; is there any way to have a footer that has the page number in any way? (without having to manually update every page?)

    Use the book feature.
    But it is difficult to number your publication if you have vertical and
    horizontal pages.
    And why do you need page numbers anyways? Digital has hyperlinks and scroll
    bars for solid navigation

  • Will 128gb of ssd be enough for pages, numbers and keynote documents?

    I am going to be buying the MacBook Pro 13" with retina display in the next month or so and I was just wondering whether the 128gb ssd that it has will be enough for Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents. There will be about 30-40 documents on each of those apps. If I do need the extra space I do have the money for the next size up (256gb). On the MacBook I will also have photos on iPhoto that I will be editing. Thanks

    You won't have any problem with that amount of documents, unless they are very heavy.
    128 GB are enough for most users unless you need to store a lot of files. Respecting to photos, it depends on the amount of photos you want to store, so you will have to check this.
    If you get a MacBook Pro with Retina display with 128 GB and you see that you haven't got enough storage, you can return it during the first 14 days of use and get one with 256 GB. Another option is to get an external drive

  • Automatically numbering a long document in pages 4.3

    I have an 86 long page document that each page is related to one another. How do I get up it's consecutive page numbering on the bottom of each page in this document?
    I'm using pages 4.3.

    You have clicked in the footer? Not that it needs to be in the footer.
    You do have a Footer:
    Inspector > Document > Document Margins > check Footer
    Are you sure you are in Pages '09?
    You are not trying to do this in a locked object?

  • Pages/Numbers 4.3 documents won't show Quick Look in Finder anymore?

    After being dissatisfied with the features and presentation of Pages and Numbers 5.0, I removed both apps from my Mac Mini—running Mavericks—and went back to using Pages/Numbers 4.3. However, I noticed that Finder no longer provided a Quick Look of either type of document (it just shows the generic Pages/Numbers 4.3 icon instead of content), even though they will open without a problem in the 4.3 apps. A few days later, I decided to downgrade to Mountain Lion—due to Mavericks performance issues—figuring it would fix the Quick Look issue, but it still persists. All other documents—images, video, PDFS, etc. Quick Look just fine.
    Any suggestions on how to get back Quick Look for my Pages/Numbers documents?

    It sounds like they are not Pages '09 files, they are files you have saved in Pages 5.2.
    You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
    Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
    Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
    You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
    Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
    Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
    Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
    Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
    Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
    All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
    Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
    Apple has removed 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Page navigation in Acrobat does not match page numbers in the document

    I have a document in both Framemaker format (server.book) and PDF (server.pdf).  When I view the pdf file in Adobe Acrobat, the page numbers appear correctly on the document itself, but up in the Page Navigation window within Acrobat the pages number doesn't match.
    In the beginning of the book I have Title page, a Table of Contents, and a Preface that all use lower-case roman numerals.  However, when viewing this document via Acrobat, the Title pages show up as i, and ii, but then the Table of Contents and Preface show up as pages 1 - 8 instead of iii - x in the page navigation window.
    I can't figure where this discrepancy is originating.
    Please help.

    Acrobat has no way to know which bit of character string on each page is the page number.
    The visible page number has never formed any part of Reader nav. as you point out, it couldn't.
    Acrobat knows the Numbering Properties of the pages as created in Frame. It just doesn't display or honor them consistently, depending on Reader version.
    I also use i, ii, iii, iv for pre-narrative material. The romans are displayed in the page number box of Acroread (this is AR7 on Unix). I can enter "ii" in the box, and go to that page. But the Print dialog is Ordinal only. Printing page ranges in AR7 is always off by 2 or 4 relative to the actual page numbers.
    Acrobat Pro 9 (9.4.5, Win7-64) seems to be more consistent, and does show and accept real page numbers for Print.

  • How to Auto Update non-TOC Page Numbers within a document (ie, 550pp)

    Friends. Within a large Pages document that is dynamically changing, along with the total number of pages, the TOC (ie, Table of Contents) can be easily updated.
    However, I want to point to specific content, and therefore the correct page number for the content, within the document and have that pointer (ie, a page number) *update automatically as the page numbers change*.
    I need to repeat this about two dozen times for different references to make a 550 page document more reader-friendly by making it easier for readers to find the exact source or reference elsewhere in a document.
    How do I do that within Pages '08 ?

    Hello
    I'm not aware of such a feature.
    If the document is designed to be read on a computer, you may use links.
    Clicking on a link will bring you to the linked area.

  • Is there a way to apply a master page to even (or odd) pages in a long document?

    I'm taking a very simple, large pdf document and bringing it into InDesign to add some graphics. The pdf is actually a customized 2-page document for a large employee group (i.e. pages 1 and 2 are for employee001, pages 3 and 4 are for employee002, pages 5 and 6 are for employee003, etc.).
    I've found a script that allows me to bring in all the pages of the pdf at one time, provided I've set up the correct number of blank pages in InDesign. What I'm looking for now is a way to apply a master page to all even numbered pages at one time. Or all odd pages. Anyone have any ideas?
    Ideally, an option that would import the entire pdf document, add the appropriate number of pages to the InDesign document, and be able to assign different master pages to even and odd pages would rock! Help!

    for (var i=0;i<= PageLength-1;i++)
    var isEven = function(someNumber){
    return (someNumber%2 == 0) ? true : false;
    if(isEven(newDoc.pages.item(i).name) == true)
              //Apply Master B for right page
              newDoc.pages.item(i).appliedMaster = app.activeDocument.masterSpreads.item("B-Master");
    //Move elements by x, y position, script label ContactEmail
    newDoc.pages.item(i).pageItems.item("ContactEmail").move([0.7292, 6.011]);
    }else{
              //Apply Master A for left page
              newDoc.pages.item(i).appliedMaster = app.activeDocument.masterSpreads.item("A-Master");

  • How do I extract each page from a long document and email to separate adresses?

    So here's my current situation. I have about a 200 page long PDF document. Each page has an individual customer number on it. Currently, I print out the 200 pg doc and email each one separately to the corresponding customer in numerical order.
    First of all, is there a way that I can extract the 200 pg document into 200 individual documents with one page each? Second, is there an efficient way to mass email the 200 customers with their corresponding document only, without seeing the other 199 documents?

    Splitting document - Acrobat Pro.
    An experienced programmer could write JavaScript to pick up the customer numbers and do something with it, but it's not for the faint hearted.

  • Page numbers in thumbnails & document display/status bar do not match

    I am using Acrobat Standard 6.0...documents that I have assembled using separate PDFs that I have scanned or printed to PDF. I am frequently deleting/inserting/replacing pages in the documents. I find that when I select a certain page in the page thumbnails (let's say, 60), and then go back to the document display, I am consistently sent to a different page. Usually it is about 4 pages back (i.e. page 56 in this example), but sometimes I am sent back to the first page. This didn't use to happen & I'm not sure why it started but it has been going on for months. It happens in all of the PDF files that I am using of this type. I just recently started using bookmarks and I seem to be having similar issues, in that some bookmarks that were linked to a certain place on a certain page are now taking me to a location 4 pages previous to the original target. I read the help and tried using Number Pages in the Options on the page thumbnails tab, but this didn't seem to do anything. Does anyone have a suggestion for me? Thanks.

    Hi,
    She is the only one affected and you don't have the problem with the same document, I doubt if her Office is updated? In earlier versions of Office there was this issue and we could easily solve it by keeping Office updated.
    Please learn from Update your computer:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/word-help/update-your-computer-HA010354322.aspx
    Repairing Office from Control Panel is also suggested.
    We can also have the user start Word in Safe Mode to determine if this issue is 3rd-party add-ins related:
    Press Win + R and type “winword.exe /safe” in the blank box, then press Enter.
    If there is no trouble printing the document, disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which add-ins caused this issue.

  • Recovering Pages, Numbers, and Keynote Documents

    I was going through deleting apps to make space for iOS 7.1.2, so i deleted the three listed apps. I had documents on them and didn't think to turn on the sync for iCloud, I just thought the data would still be there. Can I recover these documents now that I've downloaded the apps again?

    The updates to Pages on your iOS devices require updating Pages on your computer. Anyone who is using Pages on one type of device should update on all devices and computers to allow iCloud to properly share the documents and allow each device to open, read and save them.
