Page numbers wrong in PDF - original Quark file ok!

We do magazines mainly and have a Homes and Interiors publication which I have produced for over 7 years. The workflow has changed over the years and is now a PDF one as you'd expect. We output from Quark 7.31 to a postscript file then distill using our custom job option file as provided by the printers we use. Then the files are uploaded to the Agfa Delano system for them to process.
I just had a call from them to say some of the page numbers were wrong so they removed them. The page numbers are inserted using the auto numbering in QuarkXpress and the original file is correct.
The odd thing here is it's not that pages are mixed up - it's just the page numbers that are wrong - the content of each page is correct!! The only change we have done recently is go to Acrobat 9 which obviously uses the new Distiller too - but I am still using my Acrobat 7 printer option when I go to the Print dialogue within Quark. The magazine is 128 pages if that has any bearing and the pages with wrong numbers on them are in sequence (92-111).
Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or are there any known issues with Distiller 9 that could cause this?

Why don't you export the pdf from Quark using the latest pdf printer available?

Can you add page numbers to the PDF version?

    Hello saradianapasik,
If you start with a document created with Acrobat Pro, or exported from your word processor as a .pdf, then you should include page numbers in that originating application. After you have exported a .pdf form from FormsCentral, it is no longer editable.
    I hope that helps,

How to insert page numbers in a PDF document using Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1.2?
    Thanks.

    OK, I found it myself:
    1. Tools - Pages - Edit Page Design - Header & Footer - Add Header & Footer.
    2. Select the font and size, etc, place the cursor on the appropriate site to insert the page number, click the "Insert Page Number" button, and click OK.
    That is!

  • Page numbering wrong when exporting to pdf

I have a 340-page book, broken into about 40 chapters.  The chapters are set as the start of a section, and there are no section changes inside the chapters.  Theoretically, the pages should number consecutively throughout the book -- and they do, in InDesign 5.5.  But when I export to pdf, they get all screwed up.
For instance, the page numbers in Chapter 6 start correctly at #27, but the following pages are numbered like this:  28, 29, 28, 29, 28, 29, 30.  The last page number should be 35, not 30.
This happens sporadically throughout the book.
I've checked to be sure each chapter has only one section, and that page numbering is set consecutively.  In ID, all the page numbers are in order.  But once they get exported to pdf, they go crazy.
    Thanks............

Peter:  My reply above to John kind of overlaps this reply, so it might be well for you to read that, too.  You'll find there a whole list of problems I had with CS4; going back is not the answer.
I agree that one problem is that I don't have extensive experience with ID.  But I'm living on an extremely limited income, and I hoped the Creative Suite would help alleviate that.  I has done that; it has also added a great deal of frustration.  I don't have a huge IT budget to draw from.  The original outlay for CS4 was an extreme reach for me, and I didn't really have the funds for an upgrade.   How I would love to spend a few thousand dollars to fly to Pittsburgh or New York and spend a week or so immersed in an Adobe workshop!  Unfortunately, I live on a small town without such resources.  I have watched as many videos as I could find, and I have gone through several step-by-step books.  But you're right:  hands-on experience is necessary, and I'm scrambling to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can.
I would imagine you're right, too, when you say that bugs are inevitable in a complex program.  What I have trouble understanding is why they aren't fixed, especially considering the price of the program.  The problem with internal hyperlinks not working in epubs has been a known issue for some time, and according to one Adobe expert's post, the developers' attitude has been more or less, "Yep, that's a problem, all right."  But it hasn't been fixed.
Not only am I working on a limited budget, but I have made promises to clients I haven't been able to keep.  It's frustrating when clients are screaming, "Where's my book?" and I'm fighting with "known ID issues."  One novel was supposed to have been published in early October.  I was all ready to finalize it when I noticed the page numbering problem.  I feel I have spent far too much time chasing ID program bugs -- and I don't get paid for posting requests for help in the forums.
In reference to the internal hyperlink problem, I have attempted to "crack open the epub and do some fixing."  If that would work, I would have no problem; I know HTML.  But after I "rezipped" the files,  I couldn't read the result in any epub reader. I'd like to know how Ms. Castro puts its back together after cracking it open.  Perhaps it can be done with a Mac; as far as I know, it can't be done on a PC without oXygen, yet another expensive program I can't afford.   (However, after going to her website, I have decided I need to buy her book.  Thanks for that tip!)
I do appreciate your help, and I apologize for getting so impatient.  I hope you and the other moderators will be patient with me.  I'm working hard to learn as fast and as much as I can and sometimes the frustration gets overwhelming.

  • Table of Contents page numbers works for PDF but not for other formats

    Hi,
I followed exactly was indicated here regarding creation of TOC.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E10415_01/doc/bi.1013/e12187/T421739T481157.htm
The page numbers generated correctly for PDF but not for RTF, HTML and XLS.
(HTML and XLS are understandably not paginated in nature but why not in RTF?)
Tried to make the simplest example work, with 2 headings each on a separate page. Doesn't work on either MSWord 2003 or 2007.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Kavipriya,
What is your email address? I have attached a file in Oracle Metalink, under SR 3-5172030861. named test_toc.rtf
You may use any xml because the template does not use any dynamic binding of values.
The template is basically 2 pages, the TOC in the 1st page. First TOC item (Heading 1) is in Page 1, and Second TOC item is in Page 2.
So the end result should be (PDF result from BI Publisher):
    First TOC Item .................. 1
    Second TOC Item ............. 2
    But for RTF it outputs:
    First TOC Item .................. 0
    Second TOC Item ............. 0
And after doing Print Preview (once or twice)
First TOC Item .................. Error in Bookmark
Second TOC Item ............. Error in Bookmark
Hope this is detailed enough to illustrate the problem.

  • Missing page numbers while generating PDF from Framemaker book

FrameMaker 9 book files have the correct master page applied and page numbers appear right. However, when generating PDF, the page numbers including the footer is missing.
I created another book file, yet same issue occurs.
Also, tried generating separate PDF for each chapter, same issue occurs.
I have installed Univers font from ATM, I'm using WIndows XP. The Footer tags are in Univers font. Could that be the reason?
    Please advise.

We have seen a similar problem when the page# was at the right edge of the header or footer frame, and the tab that put it there was too far to the right.
This is an old problem. It comes from setting tab stop positions in paragraph formats with the cursor in the text frame on the TOC reference page. Nothing wrong with this, EXCEPT when the master page text frame has been made narrower than the reference page's text frame. One way to avoid the problem or to fix it, is to set tab stops in a paragraph in the body page text frame, so the width is correct. Another way is to set the tab stops accurately by number, rather than by eye. Visually, the reference page tab stop will look correct, but the generated TOC uses the master page text frame - if it's narrower than the reference frame, this problem occurs.
I seem to remember that this might have been fixed in more recent FM releases, but I think that's a false recovered memory, because this is not a bug, just a discrepancy in measurement. There's no way to expect that the prototype paragraph format on the TOC reference page can know if a tab stop will be out-of-bounds on the generated TOC page.

  • How to preserve custom page numbers when combining PDF's?

When combining multiple PDF's into one, the custom page numbers are lost.
Example: As four separate files (one page each), the pages are numbered as follows:  AC-77, AC-78, AC-79, AC-80.  When combining them into a single PDF, the page numbers become 1, 2, 3, 4.
How can I preserve the original page numbers?

What is ' custom page numbers' ? How did you create the page numbers?

  • Keep unique page numbering when combining PDFs

I have a series of PDFs that I am combining for a project, but I need to keep the unique page numbering found in each file. Each PDF is a volume in a set and has page numbering like "v1 100" for page 100 of volume one. There are also seperate page numbering styles for unnumbered pages that have images. This is done so that each page has a unique page number in acrobat that matches the number on the image of a page.
However when I combine PDFs it throws out all of the page numbering and goes back to 1, 2 ,3, etc. If I open the first PDF and insert the second at the end it just sets the whole second volume to have the page numbering schema for the last page of volume one.
Does anyone know of a solution for this problem? I don't want to go through 1000+ pages of renumberingagain.

    Hi Sunder,

  • Inserting filename and page numbers into multiple PDF files?

Have since seen this thread, BUT still interested in the syntax of the code
to insert filename and page # into multiple files:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/951925?tstart=0
    Good Evening (GMT!)
I have approx 100 PDFs with one or two pages in each, they are English translations
of Russian language test certificates and the formatting/feel of the originals is lost in
the translations. The only real link between the two sources is the "_RUS" and "_ENG"
filename suffixes and the common leading filenames otherwise. Thus I need to maintain
a record of the filename in any page I print off, should there be a need to refer back to
the original if the translation is open to artistic licence.
I have a script (below) that happily adds a page x/y and filename into the active file,
what I would like is to be able to do this insertion into multiple files as defined by a
portfolio or a selection via a select files dialogue box
I am quite out of my depth now as my past skirmishes with JavaScript have set
cookies and tweaked a few other browser doodads in webauthoring
Any help most appreciated on this one...
    Kind Regards

NB the filename inserted may be corrupted as a result of my last tweakings
will sort that one out ASAP....

  • Can I add the file name and page numbers to multiple pdfs automatically?

Hello.  Thanks first for taking the time to read this!  We are a small non profit hospice.  Looking to take a large amount of files and put the patients last name (which is the file name) and a page number on the footer of every page of every document.  For example.  File Name Smith.  Smith 1 Smith 2 Smith 3 etc.  However I like to be able to do this to multiple files at once and not have to open each one up.

Go to Advanced - Document Processing - Batch Processing...
Click New Sequence and give it a name.
Now select the sequence you've created, click Edit Sequence, click Select Commands.
Select Execute JavaScript from the left-hand side, and click Add.
Now select it on the right-hand side and click Edit.
Paste the code from my previous post into the window, and click OK twice.
Now, back in the Edit Sequence window, select the folder you want to run the batch on, and the output folder. Be aware that if you choose the same folder, the original files will be overwritten, so you might want to use a different one.
Under Source File Options, deselect everything.
    Click OK.
You're now ready to run the batch sequence!

  • Why is page size different from my original Illustrator file?

My art board in Illustrator CS6 was set to the correct dimensions (4.25" x 5.5") with an added bleed (set to .125"). However, when I save as a PDF and viewed the resulting document in Acrobat Pro, there is now almost a half-inch ADDED to the overall page size of the document!  This has never happened to me before when saving documents as PDFs. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to make this stop happening?

Check the bleed and page framing settings in the PDF export dialog.
