Page Tiling is Way Off -- fixable?

I'm running Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2) under an evaluation copy of Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit (build 7100) and the page tiling for my Photosmart printer is way off and mighty peculiar to boot. A "new" file may show the correct margins, but once I've gone into "print," and back to the file, the tiling shows 1/4" all around, as for the Laserjet (which is the default printer). Or the tiling lines may appear well outside of the page outline -- and double, with one set about 3/8" larger all around. A file I keep as a template for a plain 8 1/2x11" portrait layout opens with the tiling lines in the right place, but also changes as above once I've gone into "print" and come back to the file. The print preview shows 1/4" margins all around, and prints to that size, meaning anything laid out (lain out?) to the page tiling is off the 1/2" margin of the Photosmart. A similar "template" file for landscape does the same. (Landscape page tiling has always been wonky -- that is unchanged or maybe worse, with tiling lines for both layouts, doubled, etc.)
This is some kind of a system problem, not an Illustrator or perhaps even an Adobe software problem (it's the same in Photoshop though I don't often print from PS so it's not bothersome there), but I thought someone here might have had the same problem or one like it.
I 'm using the latest printer driver -- insofar as there is a "latest:" for Vista 65bit--, but HP didn't much want to install it to Win7 -- it did install when I chose the  "install with recommended settings" button.
Any input will be appreciated. (Except don't tell me to get CS4, I tried for a month to get the copy I bought to install and spent days' worth of phone hours to accomplish nothing, finally got some of my money back and decided to wait for CS5 or until I find non-Adobe programs to do some or all of the jobs... whichever comes first...)
TIA
Molly

<Have you considered creating a user-defined default document profile for the printer in teh printers control panel?
That doesn't seem to be an option with this printer, at least not anywhere I can find.
<Sounds like the print engine is querying those values and the system simply returns >>>what it thinks<<< are correct settings based on your printer default.
But the printer default (letter, document, meaning with the normal printer margin of .25" top and sides, about .4" on the bottom) should return the correct margins, shouldn't it? (.25" all around is the default for the Laserjet, but it makes no difference whether the default printer is the Photosmart or the Laserjet)
<Also check, which printer language it's using. It often makes a huge difference of PS vs. PCL. vs. WinPrint (GDI+).
<Far as I remember it's PCL like all the other HP printers we've had  --can't find that in the properties tabs either and put the manuals somewhere where I knew I could always find them... (bet I can download them)
Illustrator has never liked that printer much -- CS2 crashed if I changed the settings (which was nearly always necessary) from its printer setup function. And CS3 still gets absolutely crazy with page tiling if I change the page setting from portrait to landscape. I don't remember if PS has the same troubles.
<If all else fails, an alternative may be to save as PDF and print from Acrobat. It has a much better handle on such things. AI is really quite limited in that regard...
What I did, and should have thought of first thing!  was put a guide on the lower page tiling line of the template file (for printing custom-sized labels and sets of photos, has centers and cut lines marked) as soon as I had the template file  on the screen. The tiling lines are correct to the printable area of the Photosmart until the print function is evoked.  Then when I'm designing and spacing labels etc., I'll know where the lower boundary is.
Saving as a PDF isn't very practical for this stuff as my husband is of the nibbled to death by ducks, or millimetres, school of design and will have me making mm adjustments for hours on a label which to be stuck on a hard hat (and thus wrinkled and distorted, as a rule). Every time he needs a new set or a reprinting of an existing badge. (Hmmm... if I PDFed the file and told him it was unchangeable...)

  • Setup of page tiling

Having trouble getting page tiling to match my artboard.
Following the instructions for saving multiple pages into a pdf file I'm told to setup my artboard large enough to house all the pages (images in my case).
I'm trying to paginate 4 images at 8.5 x 11 each so I setup the artboard a bit larger. (18x23)
Then walking thru the print dialog I set the media to 8.5 x 11, and during `setup' I set `Crop work to art board' and `tile full pages'
When I click done and view page tiling, I get nine tiles far exceeding the size of my art board.
After working thru this several times, and reviewing the `tiling' help as well, I'm still getting 9 tiles whose combined size is way bigger than the artboard.
The directions I followed say the artboard will be divided equally by the number of objects, far as I can tell.
What do I need to do to end up with 4 tiles equally dividing my 18x23 artboard?

    > Dan Olech - 6:08pm Oct 27, 08 PST (#2 of 2)
    > Set up the artboard in the EXACT multiple of the page tiling. In your example document set up-artboard should be 17x23, for 4 vertical page tiles.
    > As a tip you can let AI figure out the dimensions by putting 2*8.5 then 2*11.5 in the boxes. It seems simple but if you do A4 size tiles and want 6 page tiles it comes in handy.
Thanks for the multiply tip but making the artboard the exact size made no differece whatever. I'm still getting 9 tiles.. far exceeding my artboard where there should be 4 dividing it equally.
In the print dialog, for media size I am putting 8.5 x 11. Is that right?
What else am I missing here.

  • Preview fine in Safari but WAY OFF in Firefox, Flock, Opera....

This is really frustrating me because I can't seem to get the pages to look the same in every browser.  I don't have IE (I have a Mac) so I have no idea what it looks like...  Please help if you can.
    The page is located: http://www.promarevents.com/VA/work.html
    The css is located: http://www.promarevents.com/VA/va1.css
Here are some screenshots of what is going on:
Safari, this is how it should look...
This is Opera.  The image is pushed down and the text runs off the layer.  The same exact thing is happening in Flock and Firefox....
    Flock having the same look.
I tried changing the code so it looked good in Firefox and Opera, but then Safari was way off...  I received the files from a friend who wants me to make some "minor" changes but this is frying my brain!  Thanks!

    AlieneGirl,
Not having looked closely into the CSS, it seems that something in the background has an excessive fixed width, and the VA logo with the gradient seems to be centred in it, whereas the box is locked to the right edge.
If you use a sidebar and change its width, more and more of the VA logo becomes visible as the available width on screen is decreased.

  • The app store screen is way off to the right and stuck with the spinning wheel. I can't close it. Should I force close? It said iPhoto did not update.

The App Store screen is way off to the right so I can't access it. It has the little spinning wheel I can see when I swipe up to see what's open. It won't close. Should I try to force it? How much more time should I give it? I did just give Google some accessibily access that it asked for. Just upgraded to Maverick. I thought everything was fine. Says iPhoto needs a retry; but I can't get to the screen to try again. Pages also says it has an update; but also says it just updated.

    Thank Carolyn,
I had tried that; but to restart it had to close, and to close it had to close the App Store, which was stuck. Finally did a force close. Am now trying to update iPhoto. We'll see if works this time.

  • Page Tiling vs Page Orientation

How do I get the page tiling to convert to landscape? I can change the page orientation in the document setup box, but the tiling stays in portrait. Meaning, the only way for me to print a landscape page out of illustrator is to tile it.
    I am running CS3 (13.0.2) on a Mac G5 running 10.5.2
    Thanks,
    Jill

In the Print dialog,General pane, Media area, set click the landscape icon. Set the media size to match your Artboard size. Click Done.
Note, the preview shown in the print dialog does not flip to horizontal when you select a landscape tile. The outline of the tile rotates to vertical to match the preview of the artboard.

  • Page Tiling - Precise alignment of pages

    Hello.
I know that I could solve this by using InDesign, but I'd like to have the flexibility of using Illustrator while creating this document.
I am making a presentation which will eventually be saved as a multi-page PDF. I have set up a 6144x2304 pixel document which has the page tiling set up to produce a 6 wide by 3 tall, 1024x768px PDF document for eventual viewing on-screen.
How can I set up the page tiling so that it is PRECISELY accurate when exporting? As far as I know, I can only place the page tiles using the "Page Tool", which has the handle in the lower-left corner of the tiles. This makes precise positioning of tiles in relation to the upper-left corner of my document impossible. Also, the handle is attached to the live area of the page and not the edge of the printed page, so forget about snapping to the edge of the doc.
If there was a way for me to move the handle of the page tool to the upper-left, or if there were a way for me to numerically control the page tool's placement, I'd be oh so happy!
    Thanks for your feedback.
    --------------S

After setting up the document in the Document Setup window, do a Cmd-P and then select the Setup in the box at the left. Set the origin to 0, 0 and to tile full pages.

  • Print Colours is all Programs on My MacBook Pro are Way Off

I'm having colour issues with printing in all programs.
The colours are muted and dark. Eg. Royal Blue becomes a Denim Blue. A bright pinkbecome a dusty rose. Reds are orange. Lime Green becomes Forest Green.
I have an HP 7500A printer. I experinced this difficulty with my old printer when I first got my Mac the printer was blamed and as it was 10 years old and dying I accepted that. Now my brand new printer has the same issue.
I've change the printer profiles in Pages and General CKMY is closest to true it reduces the muting but the colours are still dark and the shades are off. It slows the printer big time. Automatic or Vendor is awful the colours are so far off. RGB is way off as well.
The issue is worse on my own Mac specific creations but is persistant through out all programs iPhoto, Pages, Safari, Adobe Elements 9, Mail etc.
I've been working with HP and they can't figure it out. They have sent me a new print head and are sending me another one. Uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software.
I've quereyed help and looked through system settings etc and can't see where to fix or change the colour settings with in the Mac itself.
Can anyone out there shed some light on this.
    Pantheria
P.S. I posted this in the iPhoto forum by mistake. Since then I checked out ColourSync and I get no profiles for anything except the calculater. Nothing for the Displays, Devices, Systems etc.
MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8), Snow Leopard

My apologies.  Click on Display.  The next window will bring up the Colors button as well as the Calibrate button.

  • CS4 Page Tiling Problem

I recently moved to a 64 bit computer and i don't know if that is part of my issue or not but i finally figured out what is causing my rotate tool problem.  Basically for as long as i've had the program and this new computer everytime i opened an old ai. file i had an issue with the rotate and skew tool and and just about any other tool with the click and drag function.  Once i clicked the button to rotate, it would not release.....it stayed in constant preview mode and i would ultimately have to force quit the program to make it stop. I would take my finger off the buttom but the rotate would not set....it just kept rotatating to whatever i did with my mouse.  Now it would only do this on some documents and not others, so i've been trying to find the cause and i just did.  As soon as i set to show page tiling, this issue arises.  The second i take it off....it the problem stops.  I've trying reinstalling several times, i've even tried reformatting my computer and reinstalling.  I have all the latest tablet, video card, and printer drivers installed.  All updates etc.  Anyone have an idea how i can fix this?  I like to use the page tiling function so i really want to fix this issue.

The obvious work around would be to keep the tile preview off when working on the document. Then when you need to see the tiles for printing turn it back on. This sounds like a real pain but you may need to be aware of the foibles of using illustrator on your particular system and use a work around (which you discovered)  to get work done until you resolve this issue. From what you have stated, and the symptoms I would start with the Tablet to see if you can eliminate the issue by taking it out of the equation. Also if you search this forum for issues with tools and Tablets you may be surprised the answers you find. I often do this first before posting a question. I seem to remember seeing others with sticking tools behaviors while using Tablets in past postings. If I find one which looks promising to resolving your problem I will post a link.

  • Dreamweaver CS4 positioning way off!!!

Does anybody know why my Dreamweaver CS4 positioning is WAY off of what appears on any browser? It's not just a couple pixels, it's like over a hundred in each direction. Text and image containers look perfect on DW, but in Safari they're about 100 too high and too far left... then in Firefox they're so far down the page that I can't find middle ground between the two (and then my DW looks so messed up its confusing to work with). I found in CS3 there were some variances, but not like this. Editing this page sucks and I'm so new to web design that my head is going to explode from the frustration. Help!

  • Print/Page Tiling?

I'm playing around with Illustrator CS 4 and the print tiling thing is kinda throwing me off.  Here's my scenario:
Let's say I'm creating a new document with A4 - sized artboards and I want 10 artboards in 2 rows. I want to see the print tiling on all the artboards at the same time but when I go into the print (setup) I can't turn the tiling on (greyed out).  If I use the print tiling tool, it only does it for 1 artboard and if I go to View > Show Print Tiling, once again only on 1 artboard.  So my question is how do I turn on print tiling on multiple artboards at the same time?
In the pic below, it shows page tiling from a document originally drawn in Illustrator CS and it has page tiling in all the pages. I want that in my artboards.
    P.S. I'm on a Mac

  • Colors in browser way off from what's viewed within Dreamweaver

I downloaded a 30-day trial of Dreamweaver on Monday, March 28. I finally had a chance to try it yesterday. I like it. There's only one thing: when I view my saved INDEX.HTML file by double clicking on it, IE and Chrome both show the colors as being terribly dark and way off. I racked my brain for over four hours yesterday trying to see what was happening. I even uploaded the file to my ftp site and used my IP address to view it that way (the site will have the domain name attached after it's completed). Same thing.
Last night I opened the INDEX.HTML file with notepad just to see what could possibly be wrong. There's a few lines of proprietary code from W3C or something. I deleted them and saved it. I double clicked on the file and when it opens, it's perfect.
    What gives?

Thank you both for your replies. I get pissed because I get ignored on message boards when I ask for help. When someone asks how they can import a flower image into their site, they get 150 replies. I ask on guru about css classes and I get ignored.
I've been in the printing and publishing business since 1980 at the age of 12. I don't just surf Facebook all damn day long like everyone else abusing this technology. My monitors are top notch and so is my machine. My keyboard is an IBM from 1993 and I want it this way. Corel 9 is the best typesetting program in the world and CorelX4 sucks. I use Photoshop every day and can't find a use for Illustrator. I pushed Sitebuilder to the max and now I need more. I tried CoffeeCup and their graphics output to INDEX kicks Publisher out of the park.
I need to implement a Member Login so I bought a full license. DW can handle it and none of the others can touch it. My media license with AP announced that our thumbnail video players will be replaced by players that don't use Flash. They're lifeless but I have no choice.
So here I sit at the age of 42, putting together my weekly newspaper that was started in 2007. I don't have time to screw around. My message board nick is what it is because that's all I do all damn day long -- work. I'm getting married this August for the first time and I don't have any kids. My girlfriend is a virgin and 22 and hot.
I apologize for being a *****. I take my job and this technology seriously.
Why doesn't the weather bug show up on my page -- to the right of my flaglogo in the white box? http://96.9.48.31/
I noticed osgood left it in the revised code, but it still doesn't work after I sent it up to the ftp.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Macbook Pro to TV via HDMI - image way off center

Early 2008 15-inch Macbook Pro to TV via HDMI worked at first, now image is way off center on TV (like only showing a sliver of the computer image at the edge of the TV screen). Philips says it's an issue with the computer settings, not the TV. Any suggestions?

  • I can't print multiple pages from a website using the site's print button or 'file - print' and if I try to save as a PDF, it still only saves the first page and then cuts off.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Firefox version 3.6.8. When I'm on a website and try to print the info on the site, whether I use the site's own 'print' option, or I go to the Firefox toolbar and try to use 'File->Print', only 1 page prints out - it just cuts off mid-page. If I try to save as a PDF instead, the same thing happens in exactly the same spot - it saves as a 1-page PDF and cuts off in the middle of the page. I've already tried all of the suggestions here https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Printing+a+web+page?s=printing&as=s and the suggestions here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problems_printing_web_pages and nothing has worked.
    I appreciate any help!!

I have the same problem... not being able to print website 'Print' pages. I have read carefully the above link and have followed the reset directions in about:config, but I still cannot print in Firefox. Both Google Chrome and IE work perfectly every time. I have verified that the correct printer is selected and that the margins are in order (0.5 all around happen to be what mine are set for). I have resorted to use the Firefox Add On "View this Page in IE" whenever I need to print something. Works like a charm, but come on... it should work in Firefox too! I know there is some setting or something, but the Problems_printing_web_pages link had nothing there that worked for me.
