Pagemaker 7 to current InDesign

When the Adobe salesman talked me into subscribing to  the cloud....it was critical to me that I be able to transate my old PageMaker files in the InDesign version that came with the cloud.  He assured me there was no problem and that InDesign could read my PageMaker files.  He was wrong.  I can't open my PageMaker files...how do I translate them??

I just looked at the readable file list and it appears that PM support
has been dropped in CC. That said, if you are a CC subscriber, then you
have access to CS6 as well and that does open PM files.
You can install CS6 by loging into your account at creative.adobe.com
and clicking the download center link. Scroll to InDesign and click it.
Once on the InDesign page scroll down to the "in this version" section
and click the drop down. Select CS6 and you'll be able to download and
install it.

  • Can I access my old Pagemaker files with the current InDesign software?

Will the current InDesign software allow me to access my older Pagemaker files?

As pointed out, opening PM files with Indesign is not a straight forward business. Make sure the images are linked, take care for text reflows, glyphs, etc.
Sometimes it's better to start from scratch again then to try and open the files in Indesign.

  • How to save the current Indesign defaults file?

Hi, I've tried following the Indesign Classroom in a book but I find it left a lot to be desired for anyone new to this e.g ME!!!!. So can someone please tell me how I can save the current InDesign defaults file on a windows and if you can please do so like you would, for lack of a better word or term, an idiot because I'm fitting that description pretty well right now. Any help will be greatly appreciated and you will forever in my mind be a god, thank you =DDDDD.

Hi, im not too sure (I thought it was a stock standard thing, sorry) so I'll fust give you the instructions my book has.
To save the curren InDesign Defaults file, Follow these steps:
    1, Quit Adobe InDesigns CS5.
2, Locate The Indesigns Defaults file.
. In Windows, the InDesign Defaults file is located in the Documents and Settings/Users/Username/Library/ Application Data/ Adobe/ InDesign/ Version 7.0/en_US folder.
3, Drag the Indesign Defaults file to another folder on you hard drive.
When you launch Adobe Indesign CS5 after moving the InDesigns Defaults file to another folder, a new InDesign Defaults file is automatically created and all prefrences and defaults are reset to their original factory setting.
Okay that's all of it and as far I can get is to the app data, for some reason my notebook doesnt have it and I've been trying to find other ways of getting to it but im having no luck. I would really like to avoid the Ctrl+ Alt+Shift thing because I'll apparently lose any saved settings that I might want to keep.
Hopefully that all makes sense, thank you for responding and your time =3.

  • Opening Pagemaker 5 files in InDesign CS3

Can anybody help me with opening old Pagemaker 5 files in InDesign CS3 or creating PDF from this files?

Download the PM 7 demo and use that to save as PMD. Open that in InDesign.

  • Is there a way to upgrade my current InDesign CS6 to 8 without purchasing another license?

Is there a way to upgrade my current InDesign CS6 to 8 without purchasing another license? Perhaps there's an option to pay for an upgrade that I don't know of that is still less than the cost of a full license?

CS6 IS version 8. If you mean one of the CC versions (9 or 10) which are only available by subscription it depends. IF your CS6 is a subscription license you may install the newer versions at any time. If it was a standalone perpetual license it cannot be upgraded without paying for a new subscription.

  • Converting from Pagemaker 7.0 to Indesign CS3

Lots of questions here I'm afraid, but it would be a massive help if I could get this sorted, and I only have a week or two to do it.
My colleague and I are writing an English language textbook, with separate teacher's guide and student's book. It is currently in Pagemaker but we have had a number of problems with it, including:
    1. Some pages will not PDF. Various error messages are given, none of which I understand.
    2. On the pages that will PDF, most of the Excel tables become black or grey boxes. They were inserted into the document via Edit>Insert Object but it does not seem possible to link them (doesn't accept OLEs or something). Nor can I Place them due to some unknown error.
    3. Some of the objects, esp those pasted in from Word, jump around when PDFfing.
    4. Some text and objects move when transferring between computers, messing up the formatting. This may be because my colleague and I have different printers installed, so we can't set it to the same one.
Due to these and other problems, we're thinking of transferring the book to Indesign CS3. However, I have the following problems:
    1. When I try to open the Student's Book (SB), it tries to convert it to ID format, but before it opens the whole programme shuts down. There is no message or other indication of what the problem might be. It will open sections of the book when saved as different files, but not the whole thing at once. (The Teacher's Book [TB]) opens fine.)
    2. The Excel tables once again become black boxes, like when PDFfing from PM. I know I can redo them either by pasting in and creating table from text (which loses formatting), or by saving the files and Placing them (saves formatting but takes a while to save each file), but there are about 230 such tables and it would take forever.
    3. Other objects, such as speech bubbles pasted from Word, some Excel tables and some photos, become very low quality. They stay like this when pdffed.
    4. When I open sections of the SB, the text that was in other colours all changes to black. Eventually it will all be in black anyway, but I have highlighted some text in red and blue that I want to come back to later.
In addition to solving those problems, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me:
    1. if it's possible to insert multiple pages of another ID file, so that separate documents become one, as in Acrobat. (This would allow my colleague and I to work on different sections of the book at the same time but still end up with one document.) The Place function creates one solid object (if that's the right word), with all separate objects merged, and is low quality like the images/tables mentioned earlier.
    2. if it's possible to save the formatting when pasting tables from Excel (and I mean pasting, not importing).
    3. if it's possible to create speech bubbles (callouts) in ID. I need loads of them. They don't seem to be in the Shapes section.
    4. if it creates problems if you paste stuff in without linking, e.g. speech bubbles and arrows from Word, images from PM, etc. I know it makes the file bigger, but apart from that? Someone said that may be behind the problems we had with PM.
    Thanks heaps for any help.

#1. This is the hardest one.
First, just because it shows in Pagemaker, doesn't mean it should show in Indesign. Pagemaker lists all kinds of crap, PPD fonts, system fonts.
Courier (VGA res) is a screen font. ID won't (and shouldn't) list it and you shouldn't want to use it. Courier New is just about impossible to get rid of in Windows XP. You should substitute Courier New for Courier (VGA res).
I can't help much with Lucida Handwriting and Tekton Pro, except to
    repeat my usual font advice:
    1) Make sure the font is actually installed. Make sure it shows in
Control Panel > Fonts. If it's really there, delete it (make sure you
have a copy of it somewhere other than Fonts), reboot, and reinstall it. Install fonts with File > Install new font. Don't just dump it in the Fonts folder.
    2) Make sure ID doesn't already list it. ID doesn't list all fonts
strictly alphabetically. For instance, note that Adobe Caslon shows up in the C section, not the A section. And Lucida Grande shows up at the bottom of the list with the Hebrew fonts. You can have a situation where you have Courier loaded, it shows in ID's font list, but on opening, ID tells you Courier is missing. The lesson here: there's more than one Courier and ID is smart enough to know the difference.
    3) Search your hard drive(s) for adobefnt*.lst and delete all of the
found files. Make sure you search hidden and system folders.
    4) Delete the stubborn font files and copy them from somewhere good (I think Lucida and Tekton come free with something Microsoft, probably Office). It's rare, but font files can be corrupted, and ID is more picky than most other apps.
    5) Check Type > Find Font to see where your missing fonts are used. If they don't show up there, they may be used in a style but the style is not used. Maybe you don't need them at all. Maybe you just have a space or a return formatted in the missing font.

  • Pagemaker Conversion using Trial InDesign on Mac?

I just downloaded the trial version of InDesign CS5 and tried to open a Pagemaker 6.5 file with it, but on my current computer (Mac OS 10.5.8), the files only show up as an unknown file type, and InDesign doesn't recognize them at all. From what I've read in other forum discussions, all versions of InDesign should be able to open Pagemaker files. Is this capability limited to other OSs, or is the trial version limited in this regard? I suspect it can't be that because I also tried to open the file on someone else's computer using CS2, without success.
I only need to use page layout programs ever so often, so I wanted to see as well whether it's worth it to buy InDesign or to just toggle between ancient and new computers, which is getting rather tiring.
    Thank you.
    Emily

Are you sure it's PM file? Does it have an extension? If so, it should be P65.
The trial has no limitations at all as far as features go.

  • Can't open or print .PMD files in Pagemaker 7.01 or InDesign CS or CC... HALP!

Good afternoon.  I have Pagemaker 7.01 on a Windows 8.1 desktop - and have been using it just fine - until this past Wednesday - when suddenly, a file I've been able to open and print stopped working, and now every time I open Pagemaker, I get a PLUGIN ERROR message: "Plug-in cannot be completed.  Some systems operations failed.  [7212]  [4816]"  I checked for a fix, and all the postings suggested were I download a Reg Cleaner (BIG mistake... MAJOR scam, if ever there was one) and/or delete as many of my unused fonts, as that would be the culprit(s).  Nope.  Didn't fix a thing... relating to the issues we're having.  I even attempted to open a back-up file - and got the same prompt.  Ditto on a different computer (running Windows 7).  SAME error message.  I tried to access the file in InDesign, but - InDesign says it "may not support the file format, or a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing.  I am lost without being able to access these files and print them.  Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Have you tried opening one of the PM files with CS3?
If so, the result might range from acceptable to not so good. Part of it depends on the images being embedded or link, and the fonts. Sometimes the phase of the moon seems to come into play (not really, but it seems like that at times).
If you have your install for PM, you might hunt down an XP Pro computer and try installing PM on it you may have better success.
If you would like someone else to try, you would need to ZIP up the PM file(s) and upload to dropbox.com or another file sharing server and provide a link. If the files are sensitive, consider uploading them and sharing the link to download privately through the private messaging here.

  • How do I open PageMaker 7 files in InDesign CC without buying a previous version of InDesign?

without buying a previous version of InDesign?

InDesign CC does not have the capability of opening Pagemaker 6 and 7 files, but InDesign CS6 does.
If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, you can also download InDesign CS6 at no charge using the Creative Cloud desktop app.
In the Creative Cloud app, go to the Apps list. Scroll down until you see the heading Filters & Versions. Choose Previous Versions. You can download CS6 from there.
Both versions can run on your computer at the same time.

  • How to open Pagemaker 7.0 in Indesign CC.

I just got Indesign CC after talking to an Adobe rep for about 30 minutes via chat. I told her I had several Pagemaker files I needed to open. (New computer - which I now got Indesign CC on her recomendation) She said that was the only way I could open Pagemaker files was to have Indesign CC. When I tried to open it says it doesn't support opening Pagemaker files.
Does anyone know a way to open Pagemaker files in InDesign CC?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How do I convert Pagemaker 7 files to InDesign CC?

I've used Pagemaker 6.5 and 7 for years but finally upgraded to InDesign CC last year.   I still need, however, some of the Pagemaker 7 files.   Is there a way to convert them to InDesign CC?  I still have the installation disks for Pagemaker 7, and have installed it before on a Windows 7 computer (it worked, but crashed on exit).   It will not install on my new Windows 7 system  (hangs right after the Windows permission screen), so I can't even cut and paste between the two programs..

Thanks:   Adobe does state support for Windows XP, with their 7.01a patch which I ran for a long time:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2426 .

  • Pagemaker 7.0 to InDesign CS2

I have several PageMaker 7.0 files that I want to open/convert to InDesign but when I try and open them in InDesign I get an error message: The PageMaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered. It opens in PageMaker just fine so I renamed it and resaved it but got the same error message. I followed the instructions in the Help file under "To open a PageMaker document or template."
Do I need a plug-in or something else to open the files? I hate to lose them.

Yes, I am running SP3. Thanks for the link. I would upgrade if I could afford it. I guess I could uninstall SP3 long enough to convert the documents and then reinstall it.

  • How to open Pagemaker 7 files in InDesign CC 2014?

This was possible in the earlier Versions of InDesign  but in the latest Version 2014 it is not possible.  Are there some Plug ins one can get to open thos files?

Your subscription allows you to also download and install CS6, which is the last version that will open PM.

  • PageMaker upgrade path to InDesign?

Anyone know when Adobe will stop offering that upgrade path? We should probably upgrade before they do so. Does anyone know if it will be with CS5? Also, when we do upgrade, is the software specific to PageMaker only, or is it universal and it is just the way Adobe offers the upgrade path? Many thanks!!!

I would think that no plain
user knows, and that any Adobe employee who knows will not be allowed to say. And as far as I know, the special upgrade price only applies for  upgrades from PageMaker 6 or higher.
My guess is that Adobe will keep this offer as long as they keep on selling PageMaker, something that in my opinion they should have stopped doing as soon as they stopped developing the product. If you are going to upgrade, my suggestion would be to do it as soon as possible.
Extra linefeed kindly provided by the software.

  • Pagemaker or Indesign for newsletter

I'm evaluating Pagemaker and Indesign to replace Microsoft Publisher, which we currently use for our quarterly newsletters.  Our requirements aren't very sophisticated.  We just need a couple things:
    1) Newsletter template options
    2) Ability to publish to HTML (preferrable)
    3) Compatible with both PCs and MACs
What would you recommend?  Also, what is the best way for me to get up to speed with either program?
    Thanks!

Pagemaker is dead. InDesign is the only way to go. Pagemaker will not run at all on any newer Mac and will be a complete crapshoot on anything newer than WinXP.
CS5 does not ship with templates.
For InDesign the best book on the market is Sandee Cohen's Visual Quickstart Guide: http://amzn.to/97Hng2
Lynda.com has some great video courses for only $25/month.
