PageMaker ".bcf"     to   Illustrator ".csf"     MUNSELL

Does anyone know if there is a way to adapt a PageMaker color library (BCF file) to an Illustrator color settings file (CSF)? I would like to be able to work within the Munsell color scheme in Illustrator... Pagemaker used to have a Munsell color library.
Or alternatively, is there a Munsell color pallete in .ai?

  • Illustrations greyed-out when printing PDF file from Adobe Reader

    Hello,
From within PageMaker 7 I've made a 52-page PDF document in Distiller (selected job option is for Print) and uploaded it to my website.  It contains many greyscale illustrations (TIFs and JPGs first imported into PageMaker), and text.  I am able to view the PDF file over the net, and can print the illustrations and text on each page with no problem.  I am using an old HP laser printer (LaserJet 5L).  Other users are able to view the same PDF document on the net, and they can see all the illustrations and text on every page.  However, some users who have tested it are reporting that when they try to print out the pages on their own printers, most of the illustrations are greyed-out between pages 3 and 51.  The text is printing correctly on their printers.  The images on the front and back cover are printing, and so is an 11-page comic strip (made up entirely of 11 TIFs, with no additional text).  Can anyone work out why all the other illustrations throughout the document are printing greyed-out on their printers?
    Thanks
    Roger3

I am replying to my own question.
After posting here, I received feedback from a viewer that the PDF file is downloading and printing out pages with no greying-out of the illustrations.  It looks to me as though the problems are arising from other viewers' slow internet connections and/or hardware RAM for printing, especially if trying to print all pages at once, rather than Saving As to hard drive, then printing.
    Thanks,

  • How to set up a csf file in Bridge from my printer-supplied icc?

We are a small magazine sending PDF files to a printer out of state (printing on a heat-set web press with a newish stocatto system). We are PC using CS2.
We have gotten inconsistent color from our printer using Adobe recommended color settings in CS2, and so our printer has just supplied us with their icc profile. I have loaded it in all apps but do not know how to load it into Bridge so that Bridge says all is synchronized. I have asked our printer for a csf file but they do not have one or know what I am talking about.
Do you have any suggestions? Can I make my own csf file using the new icc profile?

    Dorinda,
the best place for defining color setting files is IMO
Photoshop by Edit > Color Settings.
    Examples:
RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB(1998) (may be called aRGB).
CMYK: SWOP or ISOCoated or the profile as supplied by
    your printer.
Grayscale: Dot Gain 20% (for Coated) or for instance
Black Ink ISO Coated, which is derived from ISOCoated.
    Never a 'Gamma'.
Spot: widely uncertain, use Dot Gain 20% or Black Ink
    ISO Coated.
The settings can be saved in Photoshop by an understan-
    dable filename, for instance by:
    aRGB-ISO-20-20.csf
In Bridge simply load this file for synchronisation,
especially if local settings in Photoshop, InDesign or
    Illustrator were changed.
For Acrobat I would rely more on actual local settings.
For instance, a document's output rendering intent can
    override working spaces.

  • Font Embedding Question in PDF exported from PageMaker v7

I am having difficulty embedding the majority of my fonts in PDFs exported from PageMaker v7. When exporting to PDFs, a "cannot embed font" error is generated.
    Technical Details:
The fonts I have are ALL LEGAL, and were purchased with complete licenses when required.
The fonts properties show them to be completely embedable, with no restrictions in terms of installation, etc.
The fonts can be placed and embedded in PDFs from all other programs I've attempted this with (Illustrator, Acrobat, MSWord, WordPerfect, etc.).
    Disclaimer:
Yes, I know PageMaker is old, and yes, I am in the process of upgrading to Creative Sutie (although, as an aside, it is extremely disappointing that even a token discount is not offered to those who have purchased every Adobe and MacroMedia software package in the past, but I digress...). However, several of my clients require PageMaker files (for a variety of reasons I won't go into here).
Thank you in advance for any advice on what might be the underlying problem.

When generating PDF output from Pagemaker, I've used 2 methods:
    1. File>Export>PDF
This method works fine for a limited number of fonts (AGaramond for example), which is why I started this post. Bob Levine had suggested using Distiller instead.
    2. File>Printer Styles>Acrobat
I usually used this method when an offset printer requires crop marks, since the other method does not provide an option for crop marks.
This opens a window with numerous options, the pertinent ones to my question are:
Printer: New 2002 PPD for Adobe PS Driver on file
    PPD: Adobe PDF 3015.102
    Postscript: Download Fonts (3 options):
         None
         True Type and Type 1
         True Type Only
When I choose download "True Type and Type 1", I get the same "cannot embed font" error if I use most of my fonts (with the exception of a few that work).
When I choose NONE for the option, the PS file is generated without errors.
Once the .ps file is generated, I then use Distiller 4 to open the file and output PDF file.
If I used "True Type and Type 1" for download font option, and the font does not generate an error, the PDF file is fine.
If I used "NONE" for download font option, when I open the PDF, it indicates that the fonts are embedded. However, since I do not download the font, I am nervous that this might cause problems when I go to an offset printer.
I do not print to a file using a printer driver (for example Linotype, Acrobat, etc.). The 2 processes I've used seem to be independent of what the default printer is on the operating system (XP).
    Thanks!

  • Can I change text in a tiff using Illustrator?

I have a layout for an ebook with some important black and white bitmap illustrations in tiff., 300 dpi. These has appeared ok on print, but not on screen, reading the same pdf-file. This is partly because there are texts in fontsize 5-6 pt. People tell me I have to convert the drawings, or at least the text, to vector graphics.
Question is now - since at the moment I have CS6 avaiable - can I open these tiff.s in Illustrator, change the text to vector and then save in a format, that can be inserted in the Word2010 layout? (You might wonder why I use Word, but it was a question of economy, when the project was started up). Or are there other ways? Thanks for any answers!

Hi, here are some more details:
I´m working on a layout-job, that involves both Adobe CS and Microsoft Word, and since I haven´t found any forums that comprises both, I´m putting my questions here and have been very grateful for the help I already got from your answers. These are some precise details of my task:
The layout is for a revised and extended edition of a book, previously published twice 10-20 years ago, first in danish, later in english. I wasn´t involved in these. The new layout that I make is made in Word 2010, set up in a template made for the purpose. The book is being prepaired both for paper and for ebook publishing, and as far as the printed paperbook I have no worries concerning the illustrations, since they have already been printed in a satisfyingly good quality. The problem is how to present clear and readable illustrations for the e-book.
The material I was given consists of the complete english book-layout made in PageMaker 6.5 plus all the illustrations as separate TIFF-files with english texts. These TIFF´s have been inserted in my new Word layout, and then some of these texts do not appear with a satisfying clearness in the test PDF´s I make from the Word layout (PDF being the first format we have chosen for the upcoming ebook). The illustrations in question here are (originally handmade) black and white line drawings (ink), mostly geometric figures with the english texts (appr. 5,5 to 9 pt). The texts were – using Photoshop - added (not by me) to scanned copies of the original danish-texted drawings. These scans were saved as TIFF´s, typically 600 dpi, onelayered,  bitdepth is 1 – and these TIFF´s are the ones I need to improve and at the same time make a seceond set with danish texts.
The attached TIFF is a section of the most problematic of these drawings (the complete drawing is 1,2Mb). As for the size, the diameter of the largest ring should in the end layout be appr. 1,7 cm, which is eqiuvalent to the original size of the TIFF. In AI it opens up smaller, in PS it opens up bigger – for some reason? Of course e-book readers have the possibility of zooming in, but in 1:1 the illustrations should look somewhat ok, don´t you think? (Here I tried to insert my TIFF, but get the message "content not allowed" - what could be wrong? The file is not over 200 Kb)
So these are the steps: 1) Improving/altering the TIFF´s, maybe change the format to something compatible with Word2010. - 2) Inserting the drawings properly in Word. – 3) Convert to a good quality PDF within an acceptable filesize.
My questions right now are: 1) Will it be enough to replace the unclear texts with bigger and/or screenfriendly fonts, using Photoshop again, - or 2) do I need to change to vectorized texts, using Illustrator or other software like Corel Draw. 3) How to keep the quality through the process of being exported/inserted to Word and subsequently converted to pdf?
My experiences with PS and AI up till now are: The process of vectorizing my illustrations or part of them, seems a long a winding one, let alone the trouble with inserting EPS-files in Word. I have made som attempts with WMF, but the files I get are simply much too big (20Mb+). EMF, exported from AI and in Word converted to a Microsoft Office Drawing Object is the best I have made, but the file is still rather big, the section alone is 5,6Mb. (I would prefer not more than 2Mb). Other suggested formats that I don´t get any satisfying results with are PNG and JPEG. EPS is unreadable (we have already discussed this) in Word, and looks ok when I reach the final PDF made with PDFCreator, but using Acrobat Pro there is a black field where the EPS should be.
    Any suggestions?

  • Pagemaker line art loses quality when opened in ID

    Hi,
I have a small booklet which I created some years ago in PageMaker 6.5.  Each page is 11 x 17 inches black and white.  I would like to redo some of the pages and create new ones in InDesign.  I have at this point no significant experinece working with In Design.
Initially I was just hopeful to be able to print the old pages from InDesign since the computer with PageMaker is probably on limted time.  When I try to open the PageMaker file they do open, but the line art illustrations which were "fine line" art of boat profiles turn into very crude looking art.  They look like they were drawn with a crayon.  Is there something that is controlling the quality of these illustrations when opened or imported?  Is there any way to get back to at least the original quality that I see in PageMaker?
I'd like to have the original pages to at least use as a starting pong.
    Thanks,
    chuck

    Hi
Thank you all for your help.  I thought I'd post a short response to what I've since found out and a link that was helpful in doing so.  As I said because of my lack of experience both with PageMaker and with InDesign I reslly didn't understand how the original PageMaker files were set up nor did I remember how I originally made them.
Searching, I found this link called "Processing Adobe Pagemaker Files for Conversion to Adobe InDesign".  http://www.ideastraining.com/PDFs/ProcessingPgMkrFiles.pdf
It walked me through identifying what I had and how to correct it.  It turns out that the page had a number of embedded graphics that had links that were no capable of updating for various reasons. A number of the graphics were also in .gif format which apparently InDesign didn't accommodate. So in trying to open these pages, InDesign dumped the original graphics and only left a crude tiff image which is what I was seeing.
I could try to salvage the sheets, but there are so many small problems that I think it's best to bite the bullet and just redo them.  Going through the excercise with the help of the link above,  however, 1) educated me in what I really had and 2) helped me to locate the original graphics which were on my computer but I didn't recognize. They were all clearly identified in the Links Manager. I simply didn't realize they had originally been linked.  That at least allows me to find the original art then message or convert it as necessary in Photoshop or Illustrator.
I've made a template and now I'm just going to start one page at a time.
I just wanted to post the link above in the hopes it may help someone else.
Again thanks for the quick response and thoughtful replies to my question.

  • Designers for a Better Illustrator

Recently I paid the upgrade tax to CSDP5, mainly because we have been getting more and more files in the newer format. I have worked with several vector design applications over the years (Freehand, FlexiSign, Corel) and appreciate the industry standardization that Adobe brings to the table. However, with each new iteration of the application (and another $600 paid), I get more and more resentful of the 'candy stuck to the side of a card shack' improvements. New features are great, and can advance the envelope, but it is a little frustrating when it still takes a doctorate in linguistic ellipses to get text on both sides of a circle. Or that Illustrator doesn't take advantage of the built-in spell checking feature OS X brings to the table (with the handy squiggle). Or, and this is my biggest pet peeve, that you cannot assign function keys to tools (especially the eyedropper/text tool). And there are hundreds more great suggestions for improving the program -- just spend a few hours reading the forums... I'd love to love Illustrator again -- come on Adobe, rewrite the application for modern operating systems -- give it the overhaul you gave PageMaker when you brought out InDesign. For that, I would be willing to pay the full price of admission.
    Peace!
    -g-

First things first - this should've been 64-Bit a while back. We're limited to 4GB of RAM - on systems that can support up to 32GB! As POP and Wide Format options have exploded the demand for larger, more complicated layouts at larger sizes and at higher resolutions has also grown. We run into the "unable to preview" error more than we used to in CS3.
Second - stability. Of the three installations of Illustrator CS5, two are constantly crashing - multiple times a day. These are fairly clean systems without a lot of extraneous software running. Yes, I can troubleshoot the preferences, reinstall the apps, etc., but we've only been running CS5 for about 3 or 4 months, installed on clean Snow Leopard installs. For two of those to have so much trouble is bothersome. These are newer MacPros with 16GB RAM - and the software is the bottleneck.
Finally - fix some bugs before releasing the next version.
Ugh - I've never had more of a love/hate relationship than I have with Illustrator. I know designers and illustrators that still rock AI 8 because it is the most usable version of the software! Pros, Adobe, are still using V8 of your software because of stability/usability issues.
Mkay - my two cents. Back to troubleshooting our exploding software.

  • Help! Pagemaker 7.0 Help Files

    Hello,
A while ago I upgraded from Pagemaker 6.0 to Pagemaker 7.0 (Windows XP)
All went smoothly except that I notice when I click on "Help - Help Topics", nothing happens, that is, there seem to be no help files.
Would anyone know how to get Pagemaker 7.0's help files back?
    Thanking you,
    Fred.

John Davies - you're the man!
On xp Windows PM 7 I have produced a 60-page chapter for an illustrated book. The diagrams comprise a paper filled line rectangle, with a black filled rectangle behind it. The black rectangle is nudged to the right and to the bottom, to create a black drop shadow. I placed the eps diagram over it, to the front layer.
I need to produce pdf file. So, I generated a postscript file; then used Adobe 9 distiller to produce a pdf.
Everything is perfect up to page 28. After this page, all of the diagrams show the black rectangle through the paper-filled ones.
I have double-checked PageMaker diagrams, and even tried to generate just one of the rogue pages but it still shows the black rectangle in Adobe Reader. All text and fonts are perfect.
    Please, any help appreciated! Thanks

  • Pagemaker 7.0.1a to InDesign

What steps do I need to take to convert a highly formatted book of 412 pages to InDesign from Pagemaker 7.0.1a?
I have Windows 7 Ultimate. I also have Creative Suite Premium CS3. Do I need to update to CS1 or CS2 before going to CS6? I plan to sign up for CS6 Cloud annual membership.

Thank you much! I have been sitting here terrified of the results even though my files are backed up! However, you just enlightened me about the embedding. It is a sports book with 450 photos and 125 illustrations from Corel Draw. My hard drive was "accidently F-disked" by a shop and I lost half the book. I got recovery files for HALF the book about 15 years ago from a recovery lab, and some files I can't open but have about 200mb of data. Now everyone is asking for the book in Europe. Time to get moving and push the button! Do you know if there are any advances in data recovery from such loses?

  • Swatch libraries to Illustrator

I am, regretfully, in the process of converting some 3000+

    It goes like this.
    1. Create empty FreeHand document
    2. Import BCF colors into swatches
    3. Save the document and export as Illustrator 5 file (AI)
    (Version 7 don't work)
    4. The ai files is ready to be used as Illustrator library
file. Swatches > Open Swatch Library > Other Library ory copy
    to Illustrator's Presets/Swatches folder

  • Placing Illustrator Files into InDesign-Apparel Industry Related?

    Hi,
I am working on a larger document, approx. 60+ pages.
    I'm actually having 2 issues:
The apparel sketches are done in Illustrator, and normally what I do is raterize the files and place them into InDesign. I've been encountering some difficulties lately, however and I wanted to see if I could get some input as to whether or not this is best practice. (It has never been an issue in the past, but the document size was maybe half- around 20-30 pages.)
Also, these documents grow to an enormous size of 2.74 GB in the last case and I had a heck of a time getting it down to under 10MB in pdf format when it needed to be sent off. Is there anything I can do to make this easier on myself?
And last when making a pdf, it has happened that some of the apparel illustrations come through discolored or blacked out, if you have any insight to this as well, I'd appreciate it.
I've only been working with 5.5 for a few months and never on documents this large, but this project is ongoing, so I need to get a handle on this situation.
    Thanks

    Hm, okay.
How would I know if the file is corrupt?
Well, you often don't, until it crashes and is unrecoverable. Then it's too late. But "insanely swollen file size" is a symptom. However, I can't know if your file size is reasonable or not, depends on the content, and it sounds like your content is pretty heavyweight. For instance - I thought it was possilbe to strip out custom brushes when saving AI files to bring file size down. I've never touched an AI file that was too large because of the number of swatches. So, depending on how much you have in there, then maybe your two-gig file isn't on the verge of crashing and burning.
I did inherit it, but have since used it as a template and "saved as" various versions. I'm not really sure if it started in 5 or not.
Cool trick: Click on Help, then hold down Control when you click on About. This will take you to a "Component Information" screen, and in the lower-left-hand corner you can see the Document History. So you can learn if you inherited a file that started in CS5. Or in CS3, or in PageMaker.
General best-practices as recommended by forum regulars is to finish a file in the format in which it started. If a file has to be moved from an older version to a newer version, then exporting IDML or INX before moving is advised. This is because of a lot of anecdotal evidence that opening up old files in newer versions and then doing a bunch of work is correlated with file corruption.
I have not tried to export-to-IDML-and-reopen, but I certainly will. What does this do exactly?
Well, it'll do a bunch of different things. It'll reinterpret the file format, which can strip out corruption. It'll strip out all image previews. If there is cruft in your file, then this will probably remove it.

  • How to create a 2-color job in PageMaker?

how to create a 2-color job in PageMaker?

You need to set up a job with two inks. I would advise that you check with your printer before starting.
In pagemaker you need to set up your colors. If you are using black as one of your colors you don't need to do anything for that, but the other spot colors need to be loaded up from the colors pallete. Everthing in your page maker documents needs to be only those two colors. You can check your document by printing to separations, where pagemaker prints all of the individual colors in the document. Two color images can be placed from Photoshop or Illustrator (they need to be saved as eps files), but they need to have the exact same colors as the pagemaker document. If the color names are even slightly off then it will show up as a different colors in pagemakers color pallete.

  • Crosshatch effect instead of shade in EPS for PageMaker

I'm using CS2 on OS 10.5.2 and PageMaker 6.5 on Vista.
Unless I save my CS2 files as Illustrator 8 EPS, I can't use them in PageMaker. When I place these files in PageMaker, I get a crosshatch effect instead of a shade, both visually and in print, unless the color is black.
I've tried quite a few different ways of working with the Illustrator file and have come up with interesting results. I found that when I created a Word document on the Mac and dragged the Illustrator file, or a png created from it, or wmf as export from it, I got the Illustrator file as I'd expect it to be: shades of different colors. When I used the eps file, I got the crosshatch effect, and this was using the default eps CS2 settings, not saving as Illustrator 8.
There's probably an easy solution for this and hope someone here will have it. I also would like to understand what's actually happening, so if there's something I could read on the topic, I'd like to.
    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you don't have a PostScript printer. I think PageMaker can render AI and EPS files up to version , or maybe 10.

  • IBook Author Illustrations

I have now completed my first iBooks Author publication which is heavily illustrated. Having previously worked with PageMaker where illustrations had to be sized exactly at the correct resolution before being inserted into the page layout, I need a final assurance that I can drag any size of illustration onto my page in iBooks Author, crop it to the required size and iBooks Author will take care of the required resolution for publication?

Your images need to be no bigger than 2 million pixels. This  subject is well covered in a very long thread origininating back to when iBA was new to us!
Pagemaker and the others should be  forgotten - when  using iBA, which  assembles content totally different than a desk top publishing application or web  builder.
The  easiest way is to think in maximums  for your  images and these can be reduced using the  mask function - to any lesser size and it can also be used to  "crop"  the  viewable picture and still leave the image intact.
    Simple facts - iPad Retina is 2028 x 1536 DPI / PPI is a matter of choice, 72 - 150 is OK
BTW, if you have not checked.. the  Apple 2million pixel rule is busted- 2048 x 1536 = 3.1 million!
    I  Use 2048 x 1536, 1536 x 2048 and some at 1024 x 748, and  748 x 1024 - only because they are already done !
I suggest you take time to study as already suggested, and also download the iBooks Assett Guide
This forum has answer to virtually all problems and taking an  hour out to  "search" a topic is well worth it in the end.

  • Illustrator Colour Management Bug

    Hello,
When I load in a CSF in illustrator CS 5.5 whose "CMYK profile" is not installed on a Mac, Illustrator Changes the CMYK profile to something else without changing the "settings" pull down menu to "custom...".
When i do the same in InDesign & Photoshop, the correct profiles are used as (i'm assuming) they are contained within the CSF file itself?
This means that i can have synchronized colour settings with totally inconsistent results because the ICC profiles are different from Mac to Mac & CS app to CS app etc.
Can you please fix this to work the same as Photoshop and InDesign?
    Thanks!
    Matt

The feature was browser independent. It even worked in IE < 9 which had never heard of color management. If I understand it correctly FlashPlayer gets the current primary display profile from the system not the browser and works with it. The browser independence was the most innovative part of this.
Anyway, whether color management works in Flash Player today or not is somehow intertwined with the wmode in use. Only wmode="window" works anymore. "opaque", "transparent", "gpu" and "direct" always give the stage.colorCorrectionSupport: unsupported status. Chrome's built in Flash player always gives that, too which makes sense considering what I wrote above. I have tested this on OS X, Win XP and Win7 64-bit today. On the latter I could not get it to work at all - might accessing the system's display profile be different on 64 bit windows or could it be a problem of having multiple screens on that machine? For testing I used the same ICC v2 display profile on all systems. I am very confident that in the past this worked with wmode="opaque" which I need to allow other things like lightboxes to be displayed above Flash elements.
The example http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/color_correction_as3.html also uses wmode="opaque" so it fails today. Publishing the downlodable source files and viewing them with wmode="window" makes the feature work again. Could your team please fix this for the other wmodes - especially "opaque"?
