Pagemaker or Indesign for newsletter

I'm evaluating Pagemaker and Indesign to replace Microsoft Publisher, which we currently use for our quarterly newsletters.  Our requirements aren't very sophisticated.  We just need a couple things:
1) Newsletter template options
2) Ability to publish to HTML (preferrable)
3) Compatible with both PCs and MACs
What would you recommend?  Also, what is the best way for me to get up to speed with either program?
Thanks!

Pagemaker is dead. InDesign is the only way to go. Pagemaker will not run at all on any newer Mac and will be a complete crapshoot on anything newer than WinXP.
CS5 does not ship with templates.
For InDesign the best book on the market is Sandee Cohen's Visual Quickstart Guide: http://amzn.to/97Hng2
Lynda.com has some great video courses for only $25/month.

  • Moving Pagemaker to Indesign for Devnagri Fonts

    Hi,
I want to move from pagemaker to Indesign CS6, but i am having issues with opening pagemaker files indesign for devnagri fonts
    1. Able to open the pagemaker file but its not detecting font, its displaying garbage
    2. I could have used the find font and replace with required one but unfortunately the file contains more than one font, we use different font for Main heading, subheading, body etc
    3. I have lot of the older files to move up and not the just one file, each file contains lot of pages
I am attaching a sample pagemaker file and fonts which will help you to diagnose the issue

@Peter – and there seems to be another problem with the provided TT fonts: They cannot be embedded in PDFs. The permission in the font is set to "Not embedable with PDF".
Tried the conversion process on Mac OSX 10.6.8 with InDesign CS5.5 and CS6.
Same problems found. Some glyphs are not showing up, even if I assign the provided fonts to the converted text.
Since the provided glyph set is not compatible with OTF encoding we could only do a large GREP Search/Replace action for every single gylph if we want to use something like an OTF Devanagari font. Simply assigning an OTF font is useless.
You can compare single glyphs and their codepoints in the provided TTF with the Unicode code points needed:
    http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0900.pdf
And as you can see here the TTF font is using the wrong code point in regards to Unicode (example: 0928 न DEVANAGARI LETTER NA)

  • Converted from pagemaker to indesign

We recently converted from pagemaker to indesign CS6, how can i do this (image above) in indesign? When i open my file in indesign the part no, desc, qty, list line where  just underlined (image below) i would like the header to be within the lines like the image above.
Thank you for your help, it took us awhile to convert to indesign and am still learning.

You'll need to work with paragraph rules—rule above and rule below. Find them in the paragraph panel flyout menu or the control panel flyout menu when you have the text tool active.

If you have used FreeHand before it is sill FreeHand of
course - as long as it works in our OS and there are no new
    features you like to use.
If you have documents with a lot of text elements and
multiple pages InDesign may be the second best choice. For
typography it is the best tool available.
Illustrator is more for illustrations, although it seems that
it has good control for type it is clumsy and there are a few major
bugs that makes it unsuitable for body text.

  • I've been using InDesign for class.  Now it "stops working" when I try to apply text and closes out

I've been using InDesign for class.  Now I'm trying to do a newsletter for assignment and it keeps "stop working" and closes out the program.

What Operating System? Is ID patched to version 8.0.2 (the patch was released last week). Do you have a Font Manager?
Have you tried replacing your preferences? See Replace Your Preferences

  • Converting PageMaker into Indesign

Working on Mac OSX, got PageMaker 7 & Indesign CS2.
I need to convert old pagemaker files into indesign files for reprint.
Has anyone got experience in that?
How to go about it to get the best result?
    Do I need special Plug-ins?
    Brigitte

Sometimes InDesign will ask you to use PageMaker to fix links and such in the file before InDesign will be able to use the file. For that reason, it would be a good idea to keep a copy of PM available on a computer that can run it correctly (one that boots into OS9).
If you have hundreds of PM files, all the more reason, since you won't want to check out hundreds of files on the off chance that you may get an order to reprint a few of them (sort of a waste of time).
I take the philosophy that old files that were built in PM can probably stay in PM, and I'll build new files in ID. Of course, you could open a PM file in ID if you want. Its up to you.

  • How do I use an Edge Animate project with SVG files in InDesign for DPS output?

Is there any way to include an Edge Animate web content using .svg files in InDesign for output to DPS?
Edge Animate works great with InDesign, except for when you're using SVG files. I've worked with SVG files on the web successfully (writing .htaccess files and such), but it seems like InDesign doesn't like them.
This is pretty important because I don't want to have to design multiple renditions on the DPS suite. Currently I have it setup as a PDF format (DPS) and that scales all of the vector-based type perfectly. It would be wonderful if the animations could also be in a vector format so that when the iPad (3) users see the designs, they will scale naturally through the PDF framework.
    Any advice would be invaluable.
    Thanks!

    moved to the DPS forum....

  • InDesign for wireframing websites?

Do any of you use InDesign for wireframing websites?  I need to create a wireframe for a site.  I was all prepared to do it in Fireworks.  Fireworks has some fantastic features, but I need better PDFs than what it can export.  (I tried every setting I could think of but PDFs created from my wireframes always looked fuzzy -- I guess Fireworks can't export vector into a PDF.)  So next up:  I was considering Illustrator.  Then, I saw something on InDesign Secrets about how some folks use InDesign for wireframing.  And I do know InDesign better than Illustrator.  So wondering if I should try it that way.  Do any of you use InDesign for that purpose?  If not, got any recommendations for software for wireframing (something that will give me better PDFs than Fireworks)?
    Thanks, Phyllis

    Hey Phyllis!
So recently I've created a REALLY basic wireframe using InDesign. I basically created the visual direction so my client could easily understand how the Web site would flow. In other words, boxes with page names and lines connecting them. It can be really simple if all you're trying to do is show the site's direction.
From there, we will create the in-depth visual layout for the splash page, home page and a global page (This is where I utilize Photoshop/Fireworks/Illustrator or Flash). This is where we will dive into color schemes, and layout schematics. In our case, this a site where we have no logo established, but have the overall concept in place, so that's why we haven't decided on an overall theme just yet. Still working out the kinks!!
    Hope this helps!

    >told by my father that he had  Acrobat Pro trial downloaded on the same PC
You are not allowed to install the trial a second time
Since a "secret code" is put on your hard disk to prevent a 2nd install, the only way to install the trial a 2nd time is to completely wipe your hard drive and install everything again... starting with Windows
Actually, I am not sure that a simple FORMAT command goes to the hard drive area used for the secret code... you MAY need to remove the partition and start as if this was a brand new drive that has never been used before

  • Inporting Files From PageMaker to InDesign CS3

How do I import files from Microsoft PageMaker to InDesign and so that I dont lose any data.

You absolutely MUST have a go-by if you're going Pub to ID. The plugin works very well but two important things that get lost in translation are transparency and color spacing - Pub allows you to designate a singular color image as grayscale, and this image will appear as full color in InD. Transparent objects also come in at 100% opacity.

  • Buy desktop version of Indesign for teachers at special discount

I'm a teacher and want to buy InDesign for my desktop which runs windows 7, I understand as am a teacher and eligible for  at a special discount.
PS help me with the link to buy the product with the discount available.
    Thanks,
    Arif

Despite the name, no version of InDesign runs "in the cloud". It is always a local app, running from your hard disk.
However, current versions are ONLY available in subscription and ALWAYS need to check the internet regularly.
At least, that is the retail position. An educational establishment should enquire about volume licensing and possible offline use.
