PageMaker to InDesign - graphics renamed

We're on Mac OSX 10.5.4 and CS3 5.0.3 - recently upgraded from G4s w/OS9 and PageMaker 6.5.
We're a tech. pubs. dept. that has worked in PageMaker since 1991. We have thousands of files, any of which could be revised on any given day. So recreating from scratch is not an option!
I don't see our problem in the forums, so I'm thinking we're missing something very simple : When we open a PageMaker document in InDesign, the links are all renamed, for example "Image 5003.eps". The line art in the art file that has been stored with the document still has the original name, for example, "sideview.eps".
We've tried all the fixes we've found mentioned, including relinking in PageMaker 7 and then doing a Save As to a different file name before opening in InDesign.
What are we missing?

We are having the same problem in our office, but when we tried to use Utilities > Plug-in > Global Link Option it only allowed us to un-embed the graphic images in the document currently open. Is there a way to un-embed the graphics from all the PageMaker documents in a particular directory?
Having to open each document and run this command takes almost as much time as opening the file in InDesign and finding the graphics.
An interesting side note: It appears that InDesign actually knows where the graphic images are because when we ignore the fact that it says links are broken, and just print the file, everything prints just fine. How strange is that??
Any suggestions?

  • Inporting Files From PageMaker to InDesign CS3

How do I import files from Microsoft PageMaker to InDesign and so that I dont lose any data.

You absolutely MUST have a go-by if you're going Pub to ID. The plugin works very well but two important things that get lost in translation are transparency and color spacing - Pub allows you to designate a singular color image as grayscale, and this image will appear as full color in InD. Transparent objects also come in at 100% opacity.

  • Converted from pagemaker to indesign

We recently converted from pagemaker to indesign CS6, how can i do this (image above) in indesign? When i open my file in indesign the part no, desc, qty, list line where  just underlined (image below) i would like the header to be within the lines like the image above.
Thank you for your help, it took us awhile to convert to indesign and am still learning.

You'll need to work with paragraph rules—rule above and rule below. Find them in the paragraph panel flyout menu or the control panel flyout menu when you have the text tool active.

  • Pagemaker or Indesign for newsletter

I'm evaluating Pagemaker and Indesign to replace Microsoft Publisher, which we currently use for our quarterly newsletters.  Our requirements aren't very sophisticated.  We just need a couple things:
    1) Newsletter template options
    2) Ability to publish to HTML (preferrable)
    3) Compatible with both PCs and MACs
What would you recommend?  Also, what is the best way for me to get up to speed with either program?
    Thanks!

Pagemaker is dead. InDesign is the only way to go. Pagemaker will not run at all on any newer Mac and will be a complete crapshoot on anything newer than WinXP.
CS5 does not ship with templates.
For InDesign the best book on the market is Sandee Cohen's Visual Quickstart Guide: http://amzn.to/97Hng2
Lynda.com has some great video courses for only $25/month.

  • Moving Pagemaker to Indesign for Devnagri Fonts

    Hi,
I want to move from pagemaker to Indesign CS6, but i am having issues with opening pagemaker files indesign for devnagri fonts
    1. Able to open the pagemaker file but its not detecting font, its displaying garbage
    2. I could have used the find font and replace with required one but unfortunately the file contains more than one font, we use different font for Main heading, subheading, body etc
    3. I have lot of the older files to move up and not the just one file, each file contains lot of pages
I am attaching a sample pagemaker file and fonts which will help you to diagnose the issue

@Peter – and there seems to be another problem with the provided TT fonts: They cannot be embedded in PDFs. The permission in the font is set to "Not embedable with PDF".
Tried the conversion process on Mac OSX 10.6.8 with InDesign CS5.5 and CS6.
Same problems found. Some glyphs are not showing up, even if I assign the provided fonts to the converted text.
Since the provided glyph set is not compatible with OTF encoding we could only do a large GREP Search/Replace action for every single gylph if we want to use something like an OTF Devanagari font. Simply assigning an OTF font is useless.
You can compare single glyphs and their codepoints in the provided TTF with the Unicode code points needed:
    http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0900.pdf
And as you can see here the TTF font is using the wrong code point in regards to Unicode (example: 0928 न DEVANAGARI LETTER NA)

  • Converting PageMaker to InDesign CS2

I have several documents that exist in PageMaker but InDesign CS2 crashes when I try to use that to open and convert the file. Is there a plug in or upgrade I need? Thanks!

I keep two old computers around - an XP machine and a G4 running OS 9 - in order to clean up old PM docs before trying to convert to ID. In fact, I'm looking at a project where I'll have to convert about 3000 files from PM to ID, and there's no chance at all that none of those 3000 files will require pre-conversion cleanup in PM.
Are you sure that it's a PageMaker file?
Are you sure that it's a PM6.5 or PM7 file?
Do you still have PM installed? Do the files work in PM?
Do they have embedded images? (That's one of the many reasons why my 3000 files require extensive cleanup.)

  • Converting PageMaker into Indesign

Working on Mac OSX, got PageMaker 7 & Indesign CS2.
I need to convert old pagemaker files into indesign files for reprint.
Has anyone got experience in that?
How to go about it to get the best result?
    Do I need special Plug-ins?
    Brigitte

Sometimes InDesign will ask you to use PageMaker to fix links and such in the file before InDesign will be able to use the file. For that reason, it would be a good idea to keep a copy of PM available on a computer that can run it correctly (one that boots into OS9).
If you have hundreds of PM files, all the more reason, since you won't want to check out hundreds of files on the off chance that you may get an order to reprint a few of them (sort of a waste of time).
I take the philosophy that old files that were built in PM can probably stay in PM, and I'll build new files in ID. Of course, you could open a PM file in ID if you want. Its up to you.

  • Pagemaker transition - embedded graphics

I am attempting to move a couple large manuals (800 pages each) from pagemaker 6.52 (windows) to InDesign CS4. The manuals have hundreds of graphics (mostly eps files) which are all embedded. In many cases we may no longer even have the graphics as separate files since the manual was begun around 1990.
When I try importing chapters into InDesign, the non-eps files come in but are not placed correctly. The eps files don't come in at all. Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

    Bob,
PM allows you to replace an embedded file with an external file. It also supports copy/paste of an embedded file to another location in the same pagemaker file or perhaps another pagemaker file but it doesn't support extracting and saving an embedded file or pasting it into ID as far as I can tell. You can export it but then you get a tiff or jpeg which don't scale well in pdf's. Our manual is distributed both as paper and as a pdf.
    John,
I haven't used Illustrator but have used a screen capture program to turn images into bit-mapped files. Again the problem is that they do not scale well when exported back into pdf's. Does illustrator have a way of turning bit maps into vector images? Adobe once had a program called streamline which did this. My graphics are mainly just text and rules so perhaps this would work

  • From Pagemaker to InDesign

OK, it took a while until I began with InDesign. But here are my questions:
    1. In Pagemaker I can place a pic or text outside the page, and still see them. How can I do that in InDesign??
    2. In Pagemaker I can move around by holdning down alt and moving the
cursor. How can I do that in InDesign?
    3. In Pagemaker I can see if a pic has been made larger or smaller than the original size. How can I do that in InDesign.
If you can help me and give the answers, you will be highly rewarded in your next life.

    >only objects placed on MasterSpread will be accessible on all spreads with this MasterSpread applied.
Master page pasteboards are also independent. If you want items on the master page pasteboard to show on document pages they must touch the page, the bleed area, or the slug area.
Dave Saunders wrote a little script for Pagemaker users (and others) that moves all pasteboard items to the current page which you might find useful. You should be able to find it if you do a forum search.
Alt + Spacebar works to get the hand tool universally in InDesign, so you don't need to remember what mode or tool is active. When not in text mode, spacebar alone will give you the hand tool.
Selecting an image with the direct selection tool (white arrow) will show the scaling in the control panel, too, but you get a lot more information in the info panel.

  • How to fix tracking values modified when open pagemaker in InDesign?

    Hi everyone,
Would you like to help me to fix my problem when I open pagemaker file in InDesign.
The problem is I always receive the message, "Tracking values were modified. Please check text composition in converted document"
What's the meaning with the message, and what I have suppose to do?
    Thank You.

It’s just alerting you that text may reflow. Given the fact that the entire document needs to be looked at carefully it’s something you can ignore.

  • Pagemaker to InDesign and a layout question

Granted, I'm not a professional production person but have used Pgmkr since 3.0 and have up converted to InDesign.
I have a small, 76 page book I created in Pagemaker. I now have it in InDesign. One of the little things I haven't been able to figure out is page numbering, without counting the covers. Right now, the front cover is page 1. Is there a way to do that or do I need to consider the covers as a separate document?
    Thanks,
    Ty Ford

    > Right now, the front cover is page 1. Is there a way to do that...
Uh, do what? Make the front cover page 1? It's done, isn't it?
Or do you want to make another page Page 1? Right-click on that page in the Pages palette and choose Numbering and Section Options.
Your help files will tell you his. Also, forum etiquette is that you sate the version number of software you are asking about. We can't help you if you don't tell us what you have.

  • Upgrade from PageMaker to InDesign. What version is best and will old serial number work?

I'd like to upgrade from PageMaker 6.5 to InDesign. Should I wait for InDesign C S5. Will InDesign C S5 support PageMaker? Or should I upgrade to InDesign C S4? And if I have an old serial number for PageMaker 6.5, how can I complete the upgrade? I understand the older PageMaker serial numbers are no longer recognized.

I understand that Adobe is already selling InDesign CS5 and therefore you would have no choice if you want to upgrade. I would think that the easiest way of finding if your PM serial number applies for an upgrade is to try buying an upgrade. You don't need to complete the purchase if you don't want to.

  • Poor InDesign graphics quality

I received a jpeg from a customer and when I printed it out in Photoshop it looked good. Then using the place command I put it in an InDesign document and the photograph is not crisp anymore. The photograph and InDesign document are in the same folder. The photograph was large 5" x 7" and the resolution was 72, but I made the photo 2 inches and resolution 300 and like I said it looks fine printed directly from Photoshop. Should I be placing differently or doing something else? Using Creative Suite 3.0, OSX 10.5.2, mini Mac. Thanks.

    > Clearly understood by the lack of response one gets.
Whoa! I'm going to assume you didn't really mean to say that the way it came across.
This is a user to user forum. And so I'm going to assume you totally understand that no one expects any official response from Adobe.
I'm going to assume that you also understand that when someone such as Dov does post on this forum that he or she does so on their own time totally unofficially from Adobe.
I'm going to also assume that you appreciate it, as all of us do, when someone like Dov does post and offers to help answer questions and suggest solutions.
I'm going to assume that your comment was totally in jest and you don't really hold Dov up to fix this situation.
Finally, I'm going to assume that you do know the URL of the feature request form (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform) and you don't need me to post it for you.
Because if I thought your comment was in the least bit snotty, I would tear you a new one.
    Have a nice day! :-)
