I am looking for pager which I can use which I can use with my OpenBox WM to drag and drop windows from one desktop to another with mouse.

If you use tint2 (panel) with both desktops displayed on the panel, you can drag icons from one desktop area to the other; the corresponding windows also move.
And if you haven't looked at this topic yet: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93126 you should check it out. There are lots of config ideas, including keybinds for paging windows.

  • Need a pager for Openbox

    I need a simple, nice looking pager for Openbox. Something like fluxter, but that plays nice with Openbox/PyPanel.
    I've tried wampager and fluxter, but neither are what I want.
    Looking for:
    - Transparency (pseudo)
    - Size configuration
    - no window borders
    - icons in windows
    - doesn't change the workspace area
    Thanks!

  • Openbox + firefox + certain pages: kills X (?)

    Hi!
    I am using arch, openbox, firefox... up to date....
    A few weeks ago I realiced that certain page in dealextreme.com was killing X (I tried to see it 4 times)... it was not too important, so "I continued the show"
    Now, I have found another page (this time a public page)... here it is: http://gotchance.com/demos/z-index/
    when I try to see it in firefox X gets killed, and slim shows up...
    It only happens with firefox... that page is only html+css... no flash, etc...
    any idea? what to see/search for?

  • Artifacts in openbox lxde desktop pager plugin

    I have installed Arch and lxde with its default wm.  on the tray there is a desktop pager panel that allows you to switch between workplaces.  However I find quite often there is some form of graphical glitch there that resolves itself if i switch desktops.  is this a known problem with a known fix, is it likely not something i can fix or is it something you guys can suggest ideas for fixing?  If you need more info let me know what you need.  the graphics is integrated intel graphics 4000

    It's not uncommon to have artifacts on intel graphics using the default SNA acceleration.
    Try if switching to UXA or glamor would happen to work: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ion_method

  • Python openbox pipe menu

    I somewhat hijacked a different thread and my question is more suited here.
    I'm using a python script to check gmail in a pipe menu. At first it was creating problems because it would create a cache but would then not load until the file was removed. To fix this, I removed the last line (which created the cache) and it all works. However, I would prefer to have it work like it was intended.
    The script:
    #!/usr/bin/python
    # Authors: [email protected] [email protected]
    # License: GPL 2.0
    # Usage:
    # Put an entry in your ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml like this:
    # <menu id="gmail" label="gmail" execute="~/.config/openbox/scripts/gmail-openbox.py" />
    # And inside <menu id="root-menu" label="openbox">, add this somewhere (wherever you want it on your menu)
    # <menu id="gmail" />

    ## This horrible mess is here for two main reasons:
    ## 1. The `Content-Type` header (which also contains the boundary
    ## marker) needs to be extracted from the MIME message so
    ## we can send it as the request `Content-Type` header instead.
    ## 2. It seems the form submission needs to use "\r\n" for new
    ## lines instead of the "\n" returned by `as_string()`.
    ## I tried changing the value of `NL` used by the `Generator` class
    ## but it didn't work so I'm doing it this way until I figure
    ## out how to do it properly. Of course, first try, if the payloads
    ## contained "\n" sequences they got replaced too, which corrupted
    ## the attachments. I could probably encode the submission,
    ## which would probably be nicer, but in the meantime I'm kludging
    ## this workaround that replaces all non-text payloads with a
    ## marker, changes all "\n" to "\r\n" and finally replaces the
    ## markers with the original payloads.

  • Update seems to have broken openbox theming.

    I updated about 2 hours ago and it seems to have broken a lot of my window manager.
    I use openbox as a standalone window manager and have had no issues so far.
    I update every few days and today caused the resizing-freeze issue, so I downgraded the suggested packages which fixed that.
    However I have another issue with theming.
    Programs such as firefox, thunderbird, thunar etc... all have the correct theme. However I use some gnome programs such as rhythmbox and nautilus and neither of these are themeing correctly as well as terminator and all appear to have the default gnome theme.
    I use obconf and lxappearence for themeing normally, however these seem to have no effect.
    I've done a fair amount of searching and googling and am now very tired and am going to bed.
    If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. If I am being stupid in my sleep deprived state please feel free to point it out XD.

    Hi all. I'm also running Openbox and have done the following so far;
    1. Installed gnome-themes-standard. Created a new folder ~/.config/gtk-3.0/; Created the file in the folder "settings.ini" with the following code;
    [Settings]
    gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme = true
    gtk-theme-name = Adwaita
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
    Thanks to the info on the thread here
    2.  Checked out the post here. Downloaded the tar of Adwaita from this.page and did the usual "makepkg -s" magic and rebooted.
    What I'm now getting is nm-applet in tint2 with the dark theme of Adwaita which is great but doesn't really match my dark theme axiomd but it's better than before.
    What I'm wondering is how to manage this in lxappearance, change font etc?? If I select the theme Adwaita it's a light theme? Having looked in the directory there is both gtk-2.0 (i think this is the light one?) and gtk-3.0.
    I've also noticed that it is affecting rhythmbox; slow to load and the status icon setting in the plugins is missing, so you close the GUI and find the app quits rather than the previous behaviour where it would close but the notification icon would still run in tint2 enabling one click control access to the GUI again.
    I appreciate this is obviously a new implementation and will take a bit of time to learn but any tips from those in the know would be great!? TIA.

  • Can I create a Desktop page on the wiki ?

    Hi there,
    I was using Arch since 1 or 2 weeks now, and I am still in the 'tune the system to get a working desktop' phase.
    On the way, I took extensive notes about everything I installed and set-up.
    So I was thinking about creating a wiki page (that could be named something like : "Desktop Arch : Zero2Heaven") that list every step to get a working desktop configuration.
    The idea is to provide a guide to set up a workstation easily for a non-guru arch new user like me.
    Before doing anything, I just wanted to be sure creating this kind of page isn't against some wiki protocol (I don't think so but better safe than sorry ).
    See you around
    Tereva

    That's why OP's personal preferences should go to his user page and not as a regular article.
    I've seen wiki user pages that listed some configs that their authors found useful, nothing wrong with that.
    I think there is something missing in the documentation / wiki : How to mount 'quickly' a usable desktop configuration.
    The idea was to hook false beginner / 'young' intermediate Linux user, that want to give Arch a try, but don't have the knowledge/experience to sort all the info available in the wiki to install a desktop config.
    IMO this could help expand the user base.
    Tereva
    PS :  I was going for LXDE + java + audio/video codex + usb auto-mounting + some fonts...
    Of course I don't pretend this is THE ultimate desktop experience (everyone has his own preferences).
    But at least by following the guide I was thinking about, someone can have a -fast- usable desktop in 10 / 15 min.

  • How would I load a DE/WM (Openbox?) only for use in VNC?

    tl;dr:
    How can I make a segregated virtual display that can only be viewed through a VNC connection?
    I have a computer that I'm using as a server (Files, Downloads, IRC bouncer), and soon as an XBMC front end for the living room computer to replace the original XBox.
    With the TV it will be attached to: I want to be able to watch videos, play music, look at pictures, and possibly run an emulator or two, and that's it.  No access to virtual terminals, no other programs at all.  I can figure this out on my own, I found a few guides, though if you have a particularly good resource, I'd love to see it.
    Here's what I do want suggestions on:
    I also want it to start, say, Openbox, with just a file manager, JDownloader, and maybe a VERY light IM client for sending links to the server.  (Taking suggestions, I use IRC, Google Talk, and XFire already, but on my laptop and my phone I use multiprotocol clients.)
    I want the IM client and JDownloader to always be running, and I want to only be able to access them (and my entire Openbox session) through VNC.  I will be using VNC clients on either a 15' or 22' monitor from Windows 7, Linux (Arch and Ubuntu) and OS X Snow Leopard, as well as from an iPhone.
    I would love for the VNC session to, like Virtual Box, automatically resize itself according to window size (or the iPhone's resolution) but I'd have no problems with a single resolution.
    I searched, but I suspect I'm using the wrong keywords, I've seen something about this before...  I'll be doing this in about two days, but I figured I'd ask for help now rather than later.

    Set up an appropriate ~/.vnc/xstartup file - syntax is the same ~/.xinitrc, but it's for the vnc session only.
    Details on the wiki's tightvnc page.

  • Looking for a pager with advanced functionalities

    Hello everyone,
    I am looking for a pager with which I could put custom icons for the different workspaces.
    I have an HTPC that is mainly used for three things: watching movies, playing music and browsing the internet. Therefore, I would like to have four workspaces, one for each of these and another one for administration. Since this is an HTPC, I'd like it to look good and I think it would be neat to have images instead of numbers/squares for the workspaces: a movie reel for the "movies" workspace, a note for "music", etc... I have been looking at pagers on the wiki, but most of the links are broken. I am currently running XFCE, but would install another WM for this. The idea came to me because I could do this on awesome 3, which is installed on my laptop, but my roommates are firmly opposed to a tiling WM on the HTPC.
    If anybody can provide suggestions, they will be very welcome.
    Cheers,
    François

    Howdy-ha- flamirande.  I don't want to be a total prick, as it's not my place; it's yours.  Xfwm or Awesome will get the job done, won't it?  You might be able to wow them if you get a universal remote and set up a proper lirc connection, letting them sit on the couch and have the power at the press of a finger.  I have some friends with XBMC (the real thing--a dedicated, old-school Xbox hacked with BSD for all their media),  and they're more satisfied with the results it provides than how it looks.  Yeah, their Win and Mac PCs (both my friends' and your roomates') give them Facebook and YouTube, but yours gives them music, movies and tv and internet on demand, at a smaller resource cost and with a more versatile core and interface.  If they're so touchy about polish, let them figure it out.  I'm not just saying this as the sorry excuse for a computer geek that I am, but also as a person who's been dealing with many roommates for roughly a decade. I mean I don't know your situation but what do they think, the setup you give 'em is supposed to get them attention?
    If these folks can't be satisfied by the fact that your system can provide them with a reliable, versatile, centralized, kick-ass setup that theirs can't, well...
    More constructively: If they just won't have it...maybe openbox and tint2?  You've got a low ram and cpu demand there, keeping music from skipping and video from tearing, if you work it out properly.  Openbox has always been my choice for the right balance between polish and minimalism.

  • Obmocmenu: Music on Console (moc) pipe menu for Openbox

    Sourceforge Project Page
    AUR Package
    Screenshot
    This is a simple menu for controlling the music player moc. I use moc version 2.5.0-alpha4 (found in the AUR) which has quite a few more features than 2.4.4 in [extra]. Still, this script should work fine with the moc in the official repos.

    0.8.4 released, with the ability to add a random album/directory/song to the playlist, a feature which moc itself is missing. If zenity is installed, a dialog box pops up that allows you to add the specified number of random entries (e.g. 3 random albums). See the configuration file for details.

  • [solved] associating mailto: links in firefox/openbox...

    Title is fairly self-explanatory, but I'm trying to figure out how to get firefox to open email links with claws-mail. I'm not sure how or even if it is possible to set system defaults in openbox since it is just a window manager, and there doesn't seem to be a firefox option for it.

    This is from a mozilla help page:
    Setting Firefox's email client in Linux
    These steps will allow opening your desired email client in Linux when operating in Firefox and using its menus, or when activating an email link on a Firefox page:
       1. In Firefox's Location (URL) Bar, enter "about:config" and then press <enter> or click "Go".
       2. With the cursor in the body of the resulting page, <right-click> the mouse.
       3. From the pop-up menu, select "New".
       4. From the next pop-up menu, select "String".
       5. In the pop-up dialog box "Enter preference name", enter "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto" (without quotes), and click "OK" (You might wish to cut-and-paste that phrase to ensure correct spelling).
       6. In the pop-up dialog box "? network.protocol-handler.app.mailto", enter "/usr/bin/kmail" without quotes [or the actual filesystem location of your desired email client] and click "OK". This should be the Full Path of the program, i.e. "/usr/bin/kmail", not just the path "/usr/bin".
    Without restarting Firefox, you can test by opening or switching to another tab. from the Firefox top menu select, "File -> Send Link". Your desired email client should open.
            If that doesn't happen, redo your steps, ensuring the spelling of your entries is correct, and ensure the actual Full Path of your desired mail client is entered.

  • Openbox Print Screen keybind Won't work

    In .config/openbox/rc.xml i've got:
    <!-- Screenshot -->
    <keybind key="Print">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>scrot -q 100 -e 'mv $f ~/Screenshots/'</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    Nothing happens when i press the Print Screen key.I checked with Xev and X detects the print screen key as "Print", why is it not working? How can i make it work?

    It works for me, it just uses the default filename if i don't specify one.
    The command from the man page is
    scrot '%Y-%m-%d_$wx$h.png' -e 'mv $f ~/shots/'
    my command is
    scrot -q 100 -e 'mv $f ~/Screenshots/'
    It is the command from the man page minus the filename part.
    It seems I don't have to specify file name, the command works perfectly fine on my end, dunno why it fails for you :I (perhaps you don't have ~/Screenshots/ ?)
    I can try changing the command though, nothing to lose i guess. I'll just make it execute something i know to work, like terminator...
    Yes, i changed the keybind to "W-w" from "Print" and it opens terminator, but if it's set to "Print" nothing will happen.

  • Proper way to exit openbox

    Hi,
    I'm running latest Arch with native systemd + slim +openbox.
    I think that a recent change has changed the way that slim + openbox is working.
    slim.service is working and I can log in
    openbox is started via .xinitrc using exec openbox-session
    in a terminal I see that
    $ loginctl --no-pager show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID | grep Active
    Active=yes
    so session management with systemd-logind appears to be working. However, I can only logout once from openbox using openbox --exit.
    The first time I do this slim reappears and I can log back in. The second time  logout gets bumped to the console; I can restart slim.service to get back in.
    How should I be starting openbox ie do I need ck-launch-session / dbus-launch any longer?
    How should I be exiting openbox? Is openbox --exit the right way?
    Is this the same issue as https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151304

    Hi.
    With systemd-logind as session manager, you should not use console kit and the 'ck-launch-session' which comes with it.
    If you created your ~/.xinitrc from the '/etc/skel/.xinitrc' template and so have these lines in it:
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    you don't need to use the dbus-launch command either, as a session dbus instance is already existing.
    Personally I don't use slim but only startx, and I want to return to a console prompt when I exit openbox.
    I use the 'Exit' action in the main menu (I don't see the command line --exit parameter in the doc).
    In your case, you want to return to the slim login screen, and if it doesn't return to it, I tend to think it is a problem with the slim service file.
    Is there a 'Restart=always' in it?

  • How to close tray-applications before reboot? (openbox)

    Hi! (excuse my bad English)
    I'm new to Arch and have started using openbox as standalone WM. I've managed to write a reboot/shutdown script with some code here from the forum, which closes all open windows by using "wmctrl"  before logging out from openbox. The problem is that it does not close applications which are only present in the system-tray and have no window open which wmctrl can access. Is there a way to tell those "tray-applications" to close (like it's done in GNOME and other DE's) instead of killing them? Results are for example that keepassx tells me after reboot that the database is still opened (because it was no closed "the right way"). In GNOME this did not happen, so i think there must be a way to close those apps.
    Thank you.

    As far as I know those processes are killed with a SIGTERM (like in kill -15) during a logout.
    from the wikipedia page (first source I found):
    "SIGTERM is the default signal sent to a process by the kill or killall commands. It causes the termination of a process, but unlike the SIGKILL signal, it can be caught and interpreted (or ignored) by the process. Therefore, SIGTERM is akin to asking a process to terminate nicely, allowing cleanup and closure of files. For this reason, on many Unix systems during shutdown, init issues SIGTERM to all processes that are not essential to powering off, waits a few seconds, and then issues SIGKILL to forcibly terminate any such processes that remain."
    This means the process has a chance to exit properly. Most linux software does that. So it might be an upstream problem: Your program probably refuses to clean up :-D
    Need confirmation on this, I was aiming blindly.
    Unfortunately that's true of the operating system. However, if you ask X to close (which is what logging out of Openbox does), all of the apps that depend on X to run just crash because they can't find X anymore. This is not a smart way for them to close. I would also prefer a nicer way to do this, but I've not been concerned enough to do something about it myself...
