Pages '08 - spelling in British English

Hi,
In Pages '08 when I open a word file I go to Inspector ---> Text ---> More ---> Language
I change this to British English as the american one always brings up spelling errors. The problem is that the change sometimes doesn't stick. In any case even if it does, the second I go to a new line it automatically reverts back to 'English'. Thus I want to know how to make the change permanent for at least this document if it's not possible to make it for Pages entirely.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Alex M

If any readers of my previous posting are wondering what I have ended up doing to resolve this problem. It’s thanks to Magnus in another thread, that I have set myself up with a Template, configured to spell check in British English, every time I open Pages. This is what he suggested:
If you want all new documents to use spell checking of another language, you have to go through the following steps, for each template you intend to use.
1. Open a new document with the template you want to use.
2. Open the Styles Drawer (View > Show Styles Drawer).
3. Select the first style in the list. (This is often "Free Form".)
4. Change the language in the inspector as described above.
5. Click on the red triangle to the right of the style name in the Style Drawer, and in the menu that pops up, choose "Redefine Style from Selection".
6. Repeat steps 3-5 for every Paragraph Style in the Style Drawer.
7. Go to File > Save as Template, and choose a good name of the template.
8. If you have only one template you always want to use, you can choose it in Pages > Preferences > General > For New Documents, where you select "Use template:..." and then click on Choose... and choose the template.
Note that you can have several styles in the same document for different languages. You can for example have one style called "French body" and another called "Italian body". You can even associate shortcuts to the styles, in the Styles drawer, so you quickly can change between one language and another.
So far it works very well for me. It seems to be the best answer until Apple gets around to having Pages work completely in British English... or other language forms... automatically, without the user having to constantly highlight and self-check their work as they proceed through a document.

    Inspector > Text > More > Language
Only applies to selected text, like making it a particular font.
It is not a setting that sticks. If you continue to paste in text from elsewhere particularly the Internet it will have a different or None language set to it. You need to select it and make it B.E.

  • Adding British English to 10.6.8

    hi,
I'm fed up with the American English spelling default in Pages and have tried to add British English  to my list of languages in system prefs> language & spelling > language> edit list. Though British English is there I can't select it, nor any of the others for that matter. I can't deselect any of the checked languages either.
I've looked on the original install seedy but can't see any additional languages. There's translations but that's all, no mention of British English there anyway.
All the other posts I've found on this whole English/American issue suggest simply checking the language in 'edit list'  - I've not seen any responses yet from anyone not able to do so.
    Anyone any ideas?
    thanks
    J

Sounds like a broken preferences file.  Try setting up another user account and see if you can check the box for British English where you are logged into that.

  • HT3155 How can I change the language for Finder to British English?

Hi, I've been using a mac for almost all my life but recently something has been really bothering me on my new macbook air.
The finder window has a category called 'favorites' which to a native of the UK is incredibly annoying.
This has been a slight issue before.. the last version of pages used US English as its preference but you could get round it and it has since been corrected in the the new version. Finder is a completely different story. British English is down as my preferred language in System Preferences..so how can I change Favorites to Favourites?!

The 33 languages which the Finder (and all menus and dialogues) can appear in are listed in the tech specs:
    https://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
"English" on that list  meana US English.  Apple has not so far offered a British English localization, but you can ask for one via
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
Putting British English at the top of the list should make that the default spell check language, but will not change the menus and dialogues, except in an app where that has been especially provided for.  I think iTunes may do it.

  • Trying to change keyboard to British English?

I bought my iPhone 4S in the United States, however, even though I have set my keyboard to British English it continues to autocorrect simple things I type such as "colour" back to "color". Everything else on my iPhone is also set back to UK setting as well: language, voice control, region format, etc.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Go into Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Auto-Correction and Check Spelling.
With those off, click on Keyboards and verify that your keyboard is English (UK). If it is, click Add New Keyboard and change it to English (Australia) and then restart your device.
After restarting your device, go back into Settings > General > Keyboard and change your keyboard back to English (UK) and turn Auto-Correction and Check Spelling back on.

First of all, you're using Firefox 34.0.5 as your details say.
This addon called "[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary-/?src=search British English Dictionary]" is the most used addon currently.
    Reply if this doesn't help.

Naeem, Thank you, point taken about the version number - I simply saw the download page state that each of the dictionaries I tried said "Not available for 31.1.0". What actually happens is that any of the dictionaries I download are not recognised by Thunderbird. The spell-check pane appears, but does not highlight any misspelt word nor give any suggested replacement. I have found a dictionary downloaded to "My documents/ Downloads" but when I double click it the system cannot open an "xpi" file. Is this because I do not have Windows XP but Windows8. I also checked the download site for "Other versions" which all say not suitable for my system
? I fearI am confused! PS the spell checking has just worked on this message!

  • Where do I get the BRITISH English version of Firefox 15.0.1 for a downgrade?

I want to downgrade Firefox to v15.0.1, but US English versions are the only old versions I an find. Where do I get old BRITISH English versions?

The reason is there is a bug in Tabmix plus that the developer isn't going to release until January. However, you can use the Beta version, which will work with Firefox 17 until the dev releases a full update. [http://tmp.garyr.net/tab_mix_plus-dev-build.xpi http://tmp.garyr.net/tab_mix_plus-dev-build.xpi]. this is a much better solution than downgrading

  • In the language preferences, what is the difference between British English, English, US English-

I mean, I do know that there's differences like -our or -or in the language, but what exactly is "English"? It's apparently not British English, not Australian English, not Canadian English, not US English. What is it? Is it a mix of everything?
I would have thought that "English" is the real one (from England I mean) but apparently it isn't since there's "British English".
    Maybe someone knows

British English, Canadian English, and American English are each a little different. I did not specifically look at the selection you are describing but I assume that if you want American English you select it. If you want British English you select it. If you are Canadian or some other English speaking nationality then you would select English.
But this is only an assumption on my part because as I said I did not check out your selection options and their differences.
Really?? I would never have guessed

  • Mail's spell-checking set automatically to British English in Snow Leopard

Upon upgrading to Snow Leopard, the system wide spell checker is set to British English. Any ideas how to change it to American English?

Try going to the "language & text" preferences, select the "text" tab and look for U.S. English.
I always thought "U.S. English" was an oxymoron.

  • Why can't I install the British English Dictionary?

I get the message "British English Dictionary could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 4.0".
I'm trying to install the most recent version, Version 1.19.1, dated December 5, 2010, and supposed to work with Firefox 2.0b1 - 4.0.*.
The Release Notes state "This release updates the installer for compatibility with the new extension packaging format in Firefox 4 ".
But still it won't install and I'm stuck with the US dictionary. Anyone got any idea why?
I'm running Firefox 4.0 on Windows XP SP3

Are you installing the dictionary from the add-ons site?

  • I need to change the language rotor on my iPad from british English

Why will the language rotor on my iPad not change from British English to Irish English or any for that matter? I am partially sighted and rely on VoiceOver daily. I can hear the sample but it will not change permanently. Please help me get this changed.

Are you sure your rotor is set on Language? Perhaps it is set to something else (such as words, headings etc)?
If not that, maybe you don't have the other options selected in the rotor option - in which case Steven Tanus has described the solution for.

Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Language & Text > Language > drag English to the top of the list
"English" according to Apple is what everyone else would call American English.

  • Can you change the language shown in templates, all templates in pages are in Spanish not English?

Every time that I use pages it offers me templates but when I go to use them they are always displayed in Spanish and not in English.
Does anyone know how I can change this please?

It's pseudo-latin filler text and can't changed.  You need to create you own english content to replace the filler.
