Pages '08 won't start.

Everytime I try and run Pages '08 it bounces once in the Dock and then nothing else happening. I guessed it was crashing and checked in the crash log and this was the entry.

I shutdown the computer and turned it back on and got the same result.
I have place the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist file in the trash and got the same result.
If there are any solutions other than a restart that would be muchly appreciated (I am at work and don't have the disks with me and need to use it today) - but for now it's back to Word.

I am having the exact same issue with iWork. Pages, Numbers and Keynote will not launch on my new iMac. They bounce in the dock, and then fail to launch.
Originally, I had transferred the apps over from my old computer so I thought that was the problem. Here is what I have done:
I deleted all the iWorks apps.
I deleted all of the associated plist files (THat I could find).
I emptied the trash and rebooted.
I reinstalled iWorks and it failed to launch again.
I rebooted and this time, Pages launched.
However, when I rebooted again later, it failed again.
I created a new account, and the applications would launch in that account.
I am really at a loss here. Any ideas?

  • Macbook Air won't start up past the "apple" page, and has a spinning icon. help!

The computer was left on for over a week while I was out of town, came back and it was slow, then it started doing the "spinning beach ball" so I shut it down and now it won't start up again.

    Hey Sarah.
The spinning beach ball of death is a tricky issue to fix.
You can delete everything in the caches folders located at:
    ~/Library/Caches
    /Library/Caches
    Also try an SMC/PRAM reset:
    PRAM RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    SMC RESET:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If you still boot to the apple screen your next option is to boot to the Mac OSX install DVD and run a disk check/repair.
Hold down option with your OSX DVD in your drive, click on the cd that appears, boot to the OSX DVD.
Click on utilities in the menubar, go to disk utility, select Macintosh HD, run a check/repair.
If this fails you'll need to run the Max OSX installer and reinstall your Mac OSX.
P.s since you have a Macbook Air your install DVD is the usb stick you would have got with your MacBookAir.

  • Windows Vista won't start or install - firmware or EFI problem?

I am running Snow Leopard on a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, late 08 - early 09 model. I have been using boot camp to run Vista for the past year with no problem. This morning, I tried to start up Vista and it wasn't working. I got the option key screen to choose between OSX and Vista, but after choosing vista, the cursor blinks once and I get a black screen. The computer is quiet and nothing seems to be running.
At first I thought it was a boot camp problem. So I went into OSX, de-partitioned the drive, and repartitioned it. I then stuck the Vista install disk in, and clicked through the boot camp assistant to reinstall. The computer restarted to begin the reinstall process, but instead of starting the install disk, it did the same thing - a single blip of cursor, and then a black screen.
I'm not technically savvy, but that seems like it's not a Windows problem, but a firmware or EFI problem. The computer will run OSX, but it won't run boot camp and it won't start from a CD-ROM. The only other steps I've taken are to run Software Update and the Disk Utility from Safari. Neither helped. I'm out of warranty and would love to be able to fix it without spending tons of money. Any help is appreciated.

open terminal, run the following command:
    sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
(press return, enter admin password, press return again)
output should look something like this:
    Betsy7:~ kj$ sudo gpt -r show -l /dev/disk0
    Password:
gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
    1 1 Pri GPT header
    2 32 Pri GPT table
    34 6
    40 409600 1 GPT part - "EFI System Partition"
    409640 316879664 2 GPT part - "RAPTOR"
    317289304 262144
    317551448 200889128 3 GPT part - "RAPTOR2"
    518440576 262144
    518702720 67287033 4 GPT part - "XP"
    585989753 82582
    586072335 32 Sec GPT table
    586072367 1 Sec GPT header
    The first line:
"gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0"
should be identical to mine. If the "Suspicious MBR"
line is missing, then it is a GPT problem, which indicates
that the MBR information is missing or more likely corrupt.
also the second and third lines will read:
    start size index contents
    0 1 PMBR
    instead of:
    start size index contents
    0 1 MBR
If the MBR info in the GPT partition is corrupt or missing,
then (obviously) Windows won't be bootable.
The only tool reliably capable (that I know of) of repairing (rebuilding) the GPT/EFI
without wiping off all partitions and repartitioning the drive
    is iPartition:
    http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
The command line program "gpt" is incomplete, so use
    it at your own risk:
    BUGS
The development of the gpt utility is still work in progress. Many necessary features
are missing or partially implemented. In practice this means that the manual page,
supposed to describe these features, is farther removed from being complete or useful.
As such, missing functionality is not even documented as missing. However, it is believed
that the currently present functionality is reliable and stable enough that this tool can be used
without bullet-proof footware if one thinks one does not make mistakes.

  • ITunes won't start up when connecting iPhone

My wife has been having this trouble for awhile, and now I started having the same trouble too. She has an iMac G5 running latest versions of Leopard and iTunes. I have a Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet model) running the latest version of Tiger and iTunes I also have a USB 2.0 PCI card which has already been tested and is operating properly. Both of our iPhones are the original model running iPhone 2.0, but this problem was happening on her setup before the 2.0/MobileMe fiasco.
Basically, iTunes won't start on her machine when she sets her iPhone into the iPhone Dock, even though it does show that it is charging. When she clicks iTunes, it syncs new data from her iMac to her iphone, but new data on her iPhone doesn't transfer to her iMac (remember, this is BEFORE the MobileMe/2.0 update). I've tried different sync cables, plugging it in to different USB ports, and always it's the same- it may work properly when I unplug the cable and plug it back in again, but after I remove the iPhone from its dock and set it back in, it malfunctions the same as I just described. It initiates a sync if iTunes is running, but not if iTunes is shut down. The crazy thing is, her syncing was working perfectly both ways until about two months before the MobileMe/2.0 switch, so I know it has nothing to do with that.
Today, my Power Mac and iPhone started displaying the same symptoms, but with a twist- I put my iPhone into its cradle, and nothing- no charging screen and tone, no syncing startup, nothing. I turn iTunes off, pull the iPhone out of the cradle, and set it back in again- nothing. iTunes won't even start up; and when I start it up myself, it still doesn't recognize the iPhone is there. I plug the iPhone into a wall charger using the same cable I sync with, and it starts charging with no problems. I plug my iPhone cradle back into my external USB hub, connected to one of the USB 1.1 ports, and the syncing/charging works flawlessly. The weird thing is, my 4th Generation iPod Photo is on a different dock with a different cable, plugged into the same USB 2.0 card, and iTunes starts and syncs with no problems with that iPod every time.
I've taken my wife's iMac, her iPhone, and her iPhone dock and cable in to the Apple Store's Genius Bar, but they weren't able to figure out the problem. They tried to redirect the syncing issues by trying to demonstrate iPhone 2.0's wireless push/pull capabilities, but they couldn't get that to work properly, even though all the settings on the imac and the iPhone were correct. All they could suggest was that I must have had a "bad upgrade" when I upgraded to Leopard (6 months ago?!?), and that I should try an "Archive and Install" of Leopard again to see if that sorts out the issue- something I do not really have the time to do (and my wife can't really be without her Mac for that long since she uses it for work).
I see a lot of similar issues on Apple's iPhone support pages with iTunes not recognizing iPhones when they're plugged in, or not charging when plugged in, etc. I've spent a lot of money on our Macs and our iPhones based on the idea (from Apple's own marketing) that Apple's products "just work". And darn it, with all the money I've invested into these products I just want them to WORK- EVERY TIME, without fail! These are the kind of problems I left behind in the Windows world, and I don't want their ugly heads to surface here too.

  • Powerbook G4 won't start up

OK, I know others have had a similar issue but I haven't been able to find a solution to this and desperately need some help. My Powerbook G4 with Leopard seems to be dead and I haven't backed it up recently (yes. I know). Yesterday I installed the latest security update, this seemed to go fine other than causing an apparent problem with spell checker. Then I tried to shut it down in the usual way and it didn't work, just stuck on the desktop screen with the whirly grey wheel. After an hour I gave up and held down the power button. Now of course it won't start up, just gives me a grey screen and the grey wheel again. I have inserted the Leopard install disk and used disk utility to repair the hard drive. It said it "appears to be OK". It still won't start though. And I can't even eject the install disk now. Can anyone help??????

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off, this is how to eject:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2179
If this doesn't work, your machine may need a new clock battery from an authorized service center.
Furthermore, you will need to recover your data once you are able to boot off the optical drive, either using Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    Or Startup Manager:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
with a data recovery program such as Prosoft Data Rescue II, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang, Boomerang. These must be purchased from an Apple software reseller.
Once your data is recovered, we can try to repair the hard drive with Alsoft Disk Warrior.
If that doesn't work, you may need to replace your hard drive.
In the future never install new software without backing your data*:

  • [solved] KDEmod4 won't start

    Hey everyone!
I was just installing Arch on my Desktop few moments ago and decided to give Kdemod4 a try,
but it simply won't start up showing me this error: (in a xtermlike environment)
Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation.
Wondering how to solve this problem...?
So far concerning the installation everything worked quite fine...XServer works with xterm and hal fam and kdm were added to the Daemons array in rc.conf...
After I get back to the tty I also get these lines:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startkde: line11: /usr/bin/kcheckrunning: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line36: /usr/bin/kde4-config: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line86: /usr/bin/kstartupconfig4: File or directory not found
But: when I DO have those files, namely kcheckrunnig, kde4-config and kstartupconfig4, in /usr/bin...
So seems like something went wrong there...it's just that I can't figure out what...
Thank for your help in advance!

I suggest gamin instead of fam, and /etc/inittab to start kdm/gdm instead of rc.conf
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAM
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Login_manager
The kdm-thing does not work so far...but I'm workin' at it
    Concerning fam...I'll try that
onna assume you have nvidia since it rejects type1 paths...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
basically make sure theres no type1 path or dri stuff as the wiki says.
Nope it's an Ati Radeon HD3850 I got there...
Make sure you read about hotplugging if you havent...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    Got that...
Make sure you installed kdemod correctly...
    http://chakra-project.org/download-kdemod.html
Is installed correctly and working with catalyst - didn't work with xf86-video-radeon(hd)...
Still as you can see there are some warnings in the Xorg logfile I have to work on.
Though kdemod4 now starts up upon an 'startx' I won't mark the thread 'solved' till I got everything working correctly...
Any suggestions upon improvement of my configurations are highly appreciated!
Thanks for your help so far AND in advance!

Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm quite new to MySQL...
    # mysql_install_db --user=mysql --=/var/lib/mysql/
FATAL ERROR: Could not find ./bin/my_print_defaults Why the leading period?
If you compiled from source, you need to run 'make install' to
copy the software into the correct location ready for operation.
If you are using a binary release, you must either be at the top
level of the extracted archive, or pass the --basedir option
    pointing to that location.
    BTW, it exists:
    $ locate my_print_defaults
    /usr/bin/my_print_defaults

  • X11 won't start (sets monitor to standby) with nVidia card

    Hello everyone!
I'm having some trouble getting my computer to work properly. Yesterday it was working perfectly, but today it would't start again. After some troubleshooting I've determined that the problem lies with X11 and the graphics driver. The bootloader, grub, and arch itself, boots perfectly in runlevel 3, but the moment you run "startx" it would appear to be loading for a while and finally the screen goes to standby mode and there is no way out of that other than reseting the computer using the reset button. I've tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and installing nouveau drivers, but it still won't start X, this time arround, it would just hang up with a white screen.
I've also tried removing xorg.conf and also using nvidia utility to generate a new one, but neither seems to work.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't report any errors, it just gives different info from the configuration and the graphics card and just ends there.
I've tried booting with a debian live USB but it would't boot either (the computer would just restart). I've also tried a Kubuntu live USB, this time arround, it would start to boot but the graphics appeared to be corrupted (strange colored noise all over the screen) and eventually it would just hang up. Using nomodeset Kubuntu finally booted (using vesa I guess?), but the same didn't work in Arch (I'm guessing because I have the nvidia drivers installed instead of nouveau).
In conclussion, something appears to be wrong with the graphics card, I dont't know if it's a software problem or a hardware problem, as it started from one day to the other, without any upgrades in between, and it just doesn't work in any of the 3 distributions I've tested.
Any suggestions in what to do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Santiago.-

  • Firefox won't start; no error message; profile manager also won't start. What can I do?

Suddenly, firefox won't start. I get no error message--it just won't open. System restore to a month before the problem did not help.
From the suggestions on this page: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20will%20not%20start... I did not recently install add-ons or clean the registry, so I think it may be a profile problem. But profile manager will not open--only a tiny window with a white rectangle and no text.
I would like to not lose all my bookmarks. And I would like to continue using Firefox.
    What can I do?

dmcritchie, thank you for your reply!
Before I received your response, I tried something that seems to have worked. I used Chrome to go to the Firefox website and downloaded Firefox (without uninstalling it first) and went through the installation process again. For some reason, this worked, even though I already had the latest version of Firefox, and I can now open Firefox successfully.
If it stops working again, I will try your suggestion. In the meantime, thank you much!

  • Safari won't start after showing an error message: Safari can't use the extension "Omnibar" because the extension is no longer valid.

Since yesterday evening (19-01-2015) safari won't start. After clicking the safari application it shows an error message: Safari can't use the extension "Omnibar" because the extension is no longer valid.
This message almost directly disappears whereupon the Problem Report opens. I've tried to find a solution on the web but without succes.
I'm running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1 and Safari version 8.0.2 on a:
MacBook Pro (Retina 13-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor 3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB
Since I updated to Yosemite I've been having multiple problems. I already read a clean install will solve most of them. But till then I would love safari to work again.
    Thanks!

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Really ****** off - iTunes won't start?

Okay, so I had iTunes 7.4 or something like that, maybe it was 7.1... Not really sure... And for christmas I got a new iPod Nano 4G 8gb, which required my iTunes to be atleast ver. 8.0, so I upgraded it.
The upgrade went fine, but when I was browsing iTunes, sometimes this square pops up saying iTunes had an unexpected error and had to quit. Oddly, iTunes didn't quit.
A few hours later I had to restart my iTunes. I tried starting it again, but this square saying it hit an unexpected error kept popping up as soon as I tried to start iTunes. I rebooted my computer, still didn't work.
I tried every single guide on the support page, and the msconfig one actually ****** up my computer really bad.
I also tried reinstalling iTunes, didn't work.
    I really really need help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Victor.
