Pages 09 won't open .pages document

Received a pages file from a colleague. When I double click to open it, Pages starts, then I get get the message: The document "xxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx.pages" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format. What the heck does that mean??? How can I open it?

Prior to pages '09 pages saved its product as packages, not individual files. '09 has the option of saving as package, but that is not the default. Packages can not be successfully emailed unless first archived. You will have to ask the sender to resend it as an archived zip file or if they have pages '09 to uncheck the save as package in preferences. This is the way it is.

    I agree with weathertx.
What in the h*** are they doing?
I hit the ALL STOP butting on upgrading to Mavericks when stuff started going sideways - this is just the latest.
Trying to use iWork for the first time - and same issue.  Created a document on my iPad in Pages (I will check for update to pages but there is none indicating I need to in my App store)....and sent that pages file to my Mac Air in DropBox - tried to open "missing XML file" error and when I open the package - there really is NO XML file.  I am not a programmer and should not have to be - to create or complie a missing system file that it needs.
Wait a sec.. WORD works but I import a file made in Pages App to Pages and is does not on my Mountian Lion MacAir..?  What?  *pinches self*
This cannot be fixed by us.  I know that I am making far too many trips to the bug page these days - this is all starting to remind me of days gone buy when I left the PC world for this same reason.  I don't want to be a beta tester.  There is no money in this for me.
In fact it's the reverse - this is costing me $$.
    This is not very encouraging.
Pathetic.  Apple should be looking over the fence at this type of thing.  Thier users are the ones that you want to keep, shoudl be your greatest testimonial.
This is not a testimonlal in the right direction.

  • Pages won't open word documents created in Office for Mac

I'm using system 10.10 with the latest version of Pages. Although I've read that if you right click on a word document you should get the option to open it with Pages, and it should be translated. But I get a message that the document can not be opened. I created it with Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 using Word.
I've been able to email those documents to people who use PC's and they have always been able to open my documents, so why not Pages?

I tried that, but no luck. I also tried copying my Office for Mac 2004 onto my new iMac 12,2 but that didn't work. because those programs won't run in the Yosemite operating system. I see that there is supposed to be a new Office for Mac 2015 version, but nobody seems to know if or when that will be released. I may purchase Officer for Mac 2011, but before that purchase I thought I'd ask Microsoft if the 2011 version would open up Work files created by the 2004 edition. Their support line put me in touch with someone in India who tried to be helpful, but I'm not convinced he really knows the answer. He tried to persuade me to get Open Office, but that's not what I want. I'd like to be able to compose documents on the Mac platform and send them as attachments to emails for people who I know are using PCs. I don't like that extra step you have to do through in Pages to export as a PC document. The same for Excel and Power Point.

  • Pages won't open existing documents or let me create new ones

My Pages application will open, but when I try to type, nothing comes up.  When I open an existing file, nothing appears, just a blank document in which I cannot edit.  I haven't changed anything with my computer.  This application was working fine a couple of days ago.

    Hi erundio,
Here's another version of Peggy's instructions for getting to the file:
    Quit Pages.
    Go to Finder.
In Finder, press and hold the option key
go to the Go menu and choose Library
release the option key (after making the choice above).
In the Finder window that opens:
Locate and open the folder: Preferences
Locate and select the file: com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
With the file selected, press command-delete to move it to the Trash.*
    Restart Pages.
    Regards,
    Barry
    * You may also move the file to the Trash by dragging it to the Trash bin at the right end of the Dock, or by going File (menu) > Move to Trash.
An item in the trash may be recovered by dragging it out of the Trash. It is not 'deleted' until the Trash is emptied (Finder menu).

  • Pages won't open Pages document created last week

Having created a pages doc last week in Pages 09, OSX 10.7.5, I find that this week I can see it in Finder, see a thumbnail, open it with Quick Look but cannot open it in Pages for some reason ?

Thanks, I managed to answer my own question in the end, I had a version of iWorks on the machine and subsequently I got the latest version of Pages from teh App store. What seemed to be happening was that the document was being written in one version but associated with the other version. I removed both and re-installed from the App store and that seemed to resolve the issue. Why this only started happening recently when both versions have been on the machine for some time !
Anyhow, thanks for your response - maybe this will help others.

  • Pages Won't Open AppleWorks document

We are preparing for a new Mac, and our old Mac has the following:
    10.6.8
    AppleWorks 6.2.9
    Pages '09 (installed from CD)
I cannot open any of the AppleWorks word processing documents from Pages. I am 100% sure they are word processing docs, as the title bar for each says "(WP)" after the title. The message received is "The document <document name> couldn't be opened."
I've validated the documents in question are in AppleWorks 6 format by opening in AppleWorks first. I found one or two that were not, but AppleWorks clearly stated they had to be converted and re-saved.
Any thoughts on why this might happen?

    1.  Review the excellent article written by Roger Wilmut on Abandoning Appleworks:

    2.  Appleworks 6.2.9 running in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels 8 for use in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • Pages won't open any documents?

    I have 5 users.  2 Admin (Parents), 3 (Kids).
Pages has stopped working on my (Admin) login, but works fine on the other 4.
How can I fix this?  Thanks

    SuportID,
Based on what we know, your Pages issue is unique to your admin account on a five-user machine. Attempts to open new blank documents, other templates, or existing documents fail with Pages hung. We have cleaned local and system caches, rebuilt the font database, removed Pages preference(s), and found that Pages acts no differently in Safe Boot Mode as it does under normal boot.
When OS X installs new user accounts, it also sets Access Control Lists on home directories, and the folders within that have an icon on them such as Library, Music, Documents, etc. If these ACL get changed or corrupted, your account access may not work correctly. This can happen when restoring home directories from a backup that may have corrupted these ACL. There is a simple process to reset them to original state.
Reboot into recovery mode holding either of following keys
    command+R
    option key
    Choose Recovery partition
From Utilities menu, run the terminal app
    type the followingresetpassword
    A panel appears
You will not be resetting any passwords
At the bottom is the option to reset ACL - choose this onlyResets ACL as originally established during account setup
    Quit recovery and boot normally
Try Pages again - new or existing files in your home directory
If Pages is still ornery after the above steps, press shift+command+U (opens /Applications/Utilities) and select the Console application. In its left panel under FILES, select system.log. In the bottom panel, lower right, select Now. And in the search window where it says String Matching, type in Pages, using leading capital. Now launch Pages again and attempt to access a local file. See what messages appear regarding this Pages session.

  • Pages can't open a document, what to do?

    Hi,
Since a couple of days Pages won't open any document for me. This includes documents I open immediatly from an e-mail, documents that I open via Pages or documents that I open via Documents. I get the message Pages has stopped immediatly then, including a large error screen. I'm also unable to open a template or a blank page. The message I get is for example 'The document 'Blank Canvas.template' can not be opened'.
Is there anyone who can help me fixing this problem? I found out Pages does work in a guest account, but I have all the documents that I need on my own account.
    Thanks a lot!

    Tim
Click on your desktop so FINDER appears in the upper left corner.
While clicking the GO menu tab, hold down the OPTION KEY, and LIBRARY will suddenly appear in the menu selection.
While holding the OPTION KEY still, click LIBRARY.
From the folders in the library, open the PREFERENCES folder. (make sure you VIEW as List, so it is easier to find, since the list will give in alphabetical order)
    Scroll down to
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.LSSharedFileList
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
Tim, I tried draging the preference files to the trash, but did not work for me. Hopefully it works for you. I even had a very nice Senior Advisor from Apple try to help me last night and we still got no where. Even he could not open the Pages 09 document file on his own computer, as I had emailed him a copy.
Just alittle note of what happened to me (21.5" mid-2011 iMac, 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5, 16GB ram, OS 10.7.5 :
Jan 25, 2013 downloaded Pages 09 (v4.3) from App store to my computer.
By Jan 29, 2013 I had typed a 58 page document using the research template within Pages (5 sections: Cover Page, Table of Contents, Chapter Page, Text Page, Bibliography).
On Jan 29, 2013 from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm while typing research paper I had no problems "saving a version", at 5:36pm I selected the Bioblography from the section pull down menu and then "saved a version" of the document and planned to 'fill in the Bibliography' after eating dinner.
I came back from dinner and Pages 09, gives me an Error box..... that the document cound't be opened.
I can View the document in Preview, unlike others that said they had the same problem, but could not view their documents in Preview.
But I noticed last night while discussing the matter with the Apple Advisor, that the last page (page 58) is actually blank, rather than having the standard "Bibliography title" at the top, like the template selection has on Pages 09. So something happened within the software when I made a selection from the "sections" pull down menu.
Also, the only other program I had running at the time was iTunes (v10.6.3).
The Apple Advisor even remotely accessed my computer last night but found nothing remarkable and took a copy of the document and hopefully Apple will have an answer and possible something to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

  • So just the document I was last working on in pages won't open. I can't email it either it just sits preparing the document no matter what format I try. I can copy it, but the copies don't open either.

So just the document I was last working on in pages won't open. I can't email it either it just sits preparing the document no matter what format I try. I can copy it, but the copies don't open either. I tried deleting documents in pages as well as the app and reinstalling it, but nothing has helped.

Try quitting Pages and then reset your iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Latest version of Pages won't open documents created in previous version.

Pages won't open documents created before update.

I got the same issue, here is what it says now: "My document" can’t be opened."
    iOS Mavericks 10.9.2
    Pages 5.1
What I did to get this issue:
    - My file was created a month ago in Pages 5.1
    - Today, I opened the file normally
    - I clicked "duplicate" in order to make a back up from the current version
    - The loading wheel kept running for a few minutes...Maybe my cache memory too busy?
    - so, I "forced to quit" Pages
    - I try to open my doc again in Pages 5.1, now it's a failure!!
    - Then i tried to open on another Macbook with Pages 5.1 = Failure
    - I updated Mavericks latest updates = Failure to open my doc
    - Try to open in pages 4.3 = It says: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document..."
I need a fix asap, it's terribly important to get my document back

  • Pages and Numbers won't open existing documents.. Any clues?

    Hello!
I noticed yesterday that Pages and Numbers won't open existing documents.
I've tried to reinstall software, but no luck.
I've done no changes to my system, other than installing updates that have been made available.
    I run iWork '09 on a MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010, with OSX 10.7.3.
I can view the documents in preview, but I really need them to work as they are work-related.

  • Pages won't open documents

I just made about 15 documents that are cards printed on half sheets of photo paper. I print a photo on one half of the page and then fold it in two and have a beautiful thank you note to use.
I made and printed many of them. I opened them again as documents, and they opened fine. Today, in trying to open them, I get the message, "Pages can't open this document"!
any idea what might be going on? Would it be have trouble locating the photo in iPhoto?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Pages won't open document because I need an updated version. But I have the most recent version! Help!, Pages won't open document because I need an updated version. But I have the most recent version! Help!

Trying to open a recent Pages document - get the message I need a newer version of Pages. Apps indicates I have the latest version.
Kind of feels like I'm running word... Ugh.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?

How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?
I have files I made with Pages and exported as PDF but I can't open them with pages to edit?
Also, where are the recent files created by pages located? Can't find those to open either..

    Hi Tom,
I was delighted when I signed up for Pages. Clunky yes, but it worked. I've been a graphic designer on a Mac for 25 plus years and have logged too many horror stories of "upgrade" wars which cost me massive lost time, data and money forcibly extracted just so I could finish a project.
When I first used Pages in April of 2012? or there about, I was able to open Word documents exported to .pdf format, emailed to me, which I then dragged into Pages. I could make the changes I needed to make, export as a .pdf, return it back to my client which they could then edit on whatever it was they were using. I'm not a neophyte with this. I've had Original Photoshop as a stand alone, Quark (which locked users out 6 months after I purchased it.) Quark again, Freehand, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop again, Creative Suite for several upgrades, Acrobat Pro. 2 years ago I lost 6 years of Quicken data and had to and "upgrade" start over. This last go around I  had to "upgrade" my Apple ID - yes I had 2 on purpose, lost my Pandora One and my ability to get into the Tulsa County Library website.
At this point, I'm retired and feel like what I've paid for in the past should WORK today. I have a 100+ page cookbook in Quark which I was able to export as a .pdf, that I've lost the tags too, Easier to start over. I have artwork that is hundreds of megs in Photoshop. Not the least bit interested in anybody's "cloud".
Thanks for letting me vent. I'm determined to keep my equipment and software up to date so I can enjoy the skills I've acquired, but I completely cringe at Apple's antics. I truly hate it when I have to respond to some new "tip" or product offer. BooHiss. Happy Turkey Day. Pages is a "turkey" program.
    Best regards, mbd

Pages crashes when opening any document on iPad 3 Latest version. I tried everything I could find on the net and finally deleted Pages from my device and reinstalled it. Still when I try to create a new document or open a document it just crashes out.

    Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version
Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings
