Pages 5.1 - Styles bug

Hi everyone,
I was very glad that Apple updated Pages.
But I noticed a strange bug in 5.1 version.
On one of my documents (a big one updated from a previous version of Pages) containing a bunch of styles, does not "wok as it should). Now, whent I scroll the (how do you say in english ?) style menu in the format section (see image) styles becomes blank.
It seems this bug occurs with my Macbook pro retina only (not such problem with my iMac).
Can somebody help ?
When I come back to the menu, styles have reappeared but always the same scroll bug !
Both images befor and after scrolling the menu :
f
Best regards.
And forgive my clumsy english : I am french !

Just to let you know, I have had the same problem since I started using Pages 5.0 on my MacMini.
I reported that bug to Apple through their developer Bug Reporter some time back...
This was my report:
09-Dec-2013 10:33 PM
Summary: When the number of paragraph styles becomes very high, the scrolling paragraph styles pane stops displaying text and becomes unusable.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Launch Pages 5.0 or 5.0.1
2. Go to Format Inspector, Paragraph styles, and access the pop out paragraph styles selection pane.
3. Click on the "+" to add a new style. Repeat this step until the text in the pop out paragraph styles selection pane disappears (approximately 23 to 47 times depending on the size of the styles added).
Actual Results: The text in the pop out paragraph styles selection pane disappears, rendering it unusable.
Version: Pages 5.0 and 5.0.1; OS X 10.9 (13A598)
Notes: It seems that triggering the error depends on the graphical height of  the pop out paragraph styles selection pane, not the actual number of existing styles.
This was their response:

Engineering has determined that your bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed.
I guess they have known about the problem for a while then. They must be busy with damage control over all the issues with Pages 5 that are causing greater negative feedback.
The only way I found to work around the bug was eliminating styles from the drawer until the bug goes away. Not a nice fix, but it is one way to be able to continue working with the doc.

  • Copy/Paste Layer Style Bug

Really, you guys didn't fix the copy/paste layer style bug in 13.0.2.  Wow, easily reproduced, there is an adobe recommended workaround, meaning very aware of the problem, and couldn't fix it for this update, very sad Adobe, very sad.  Can you let us know when this will be fixed?

The 13.0.2 update was targeted to fix one specific bug. It was not intended to be a general bug-fix update.
We are testing a fix now for the layer styles bug and others, and we intend to include these fixes in the next general update, which is currently slated for release in less than two months.

  • Styles bug in Pages 5.0?

I am editing a document created with Pages 09. The doc has probably 40 paragraph styles: certainly more than can be viewed in the new styles dropdown list without scrolling. When I attempt to scroll this dropdown list it "disappears" from the pane. See two screen grabs: #1 taken after clicking the down arrow to open the styles dropdown; #2 taken after trying to scroll down within the dropdown pane. Once I have tried to scroll, there is no way to recover the styles display other than closing the pane by clicking ourside of it.
I don't see a way around this, save reverting to using Pages 09 to edit my document. Any ideas?

    Another autocorrect bug:
I type a lot of lyrics, which tend to cotain words like ’cause and ’em instead of because and them.
I've set up autocorrect instances to change a plain apostrophe with an ending, single curly quote for these words, but they are invariably changed to a beginning, single curly quote mark by Pages. The only way I can get the correct curly quote is to type over the wrong quote manually and hope that I don't have to edit the rest of the word again, as this would cause autocorrect to kick in again and change the quote to the wrong, beginning curly mark again.
Does anyone know how to get around this tedious problem?

  • Link master page to paragraph style?

I'd like to have the first page of each chapter have a different master page (particularly no header with page numbers, etc.). I know how to apply a different page style, but I want the style to stay with the first page of each chapter -- even if more text is added and the document gets longer.
    Any way to do this?

Peter, I'm not sure what functionality we used in the past -- it's been years now since we stopped using Frame when it was discontinued -- but I didn't have these problems before. Perhaps that's just because the book feature of Frame (chapters in their own files, very easily compiled into a book) was so easy and did just what we needed it to do. Could not get IDs book feature to work well when I tried it. Haven't been back.
I'll also try out the idea you have. Thanks for the input.
There's a faction of ex-FrameMaker-on-Mac users who are gathering signers for their petition to revive FrameMaker on Mac. Search Google for terms like "framemaker mac petition" without quotes.
FrameMaker 7.1, I believe, is the last Mac version. It ran on System 9, or a few earlier releases, and on Classic, the System 9 emulator on Tiger. Yours is the most valid reason I've seen for leaving FrameMaker - it's not on the OS you're committed to. I use Parallels on my Mac to run FrameMaker and other applications in Adobe's Technical Communications Suite which is Windows-only.
Aa Peter S. said, InDesign's book feature is a workable tool. Some folks report problems with cross-file cross-references in InDesign books. I'm not familiar whether they are more common on Windows ID or Mac, and not sure which update-level of CS4 or CS5 they affect. If you're having problems with x-refs, search Google for "InDesign cross-references across files," and similar terms without quotes, and if your issues aren't addressed in the links you find, post them here. One cross-file problem with x-refs in books that I can recall occurs in PDFs exported from InDesign; if the PDF export dialog box uses the Interactive output option, instead of the Print output option, the links in the single PDF that's created fail because the output processing goofs up the links it creates in the PDF. I've reported it as a bug. There were instances in later FrameMaker releases that had a similar problem with the Save As PDF process; fixed later, though.
One ID x-ref issue I've seen on the forum is that lots of them slow down InDesign. I believe the commercial InDesign cross-references plug-in from dtptools.com doesn't have the problem; it's also got smarter x-ref format options than either FrameMaker or InDesign.
I believe that InDesign's indexing isn't easy for FrameMaker users to grasp. It took me a while, partly because I don't do it much, and partly because it's a different mindset. Some earlier releases had bugs that soured folks on the index, but they're fixed. Search Google for terms like "InDesign index scripts" or "InDesign online free index tutorials" and similar terms without quotes for more info.
The span/split columns feature in InDesign CS5 that Peter S. mentions is like FrameMaker's straddle (across columns) paragraphs, with a bit of Word's multi-column paragraph attribute thrown in. It's still got a few annoying behaviors, but not disruptive bugs. However, InDesign totally lacks FrameMaker's true side-headings and true run-in paragraphs (a paragraph that can be followed by a paragraph that begins on the same line; IOW, a paragraph with a hard Return but no new line feed.) There are some workarounds.

  • [1.6][Widgets] HtmlPannel in IE6/IE7 CCS internal style bug

If you use htmlpannel widgets, there is a bug in IE7, work

I must test it with CSS link, also you could link the css in

  • Load Styles Bug? (IDCS4 WinXPSP3)

    Do the following:
    1. open a document that contains a bunch of paragraph styles
    2. delete all pages and all paragraph styles from the document so that you're left with a single blank sheet.
    3. do a "save as" and save the document by a new name.
    4. try to load the paragraph styles back again from the previous incarnation of the document (i.e., from the original file before you did a save as)
    5. do you get an error?
The workaround seems to be to close the document and reopen it. InDesign seems to miss that the document has had a "save as" done, and is no longer the same document.
    Thanks,
    Ariel

It's to do with the Word-footnote-styles-don't-import issue that I started a thread about just below. I'm basing this book on a previous book, so I deleted all the pages and did a save as. Then I placed the text of the new book. Saw the footnotes styles didn't import properly. Thought it was because of all the previous InDesign styles. Deleted them. Placed again. Still didn't work. Tried to load the InDesign styles back in to try something else. Got the error! (One bug leads to another, as they say.)
By the way, do you have any ideas about importing footnote styles from Word? That's really my biggest issue.

  • IPhone Pages lost character styles in reimport

OK, this is really bad. I was editing a Pages document on the iPhone. A 200,000 word novel. Upon reimport, i have lost all my character styles. (paragraphs styles are still there). The text is still formatted, but has no associated style
This is a complete distaster. And an outrageous bug. How am i going to fix this. Manually go through and restyle ever instance? Is Apple going to fix this?

Don't you have a backup copy somewhere with the styles intact?
As for what Apple might fix, nobody can here can tell you, all you can do is ask:

  • Pages Default Hyperlink Style

I want to change the default hyperlink style but don't see any means to. The default is the blue underlined text which is a bit MS Word. I can create a new style and convert it but this is an extra step I'd like not to have to take!
Any ideas for changing the hyperlink default style?
    Thanks.

Yes, but we are talking about cutting and pasting text which contains URLs into a Pages document. Pages has its own style for hyperlinks - blue text that is underlined. This is what I wanted to alter.
Anyway I found a solution for anyone else who is looking to do this.
Make a new character style of how you want the hyperlinks to look, e.g. no underlining, but bold text. When you insert the text and Pages auto-detects the hyperlinks and applies its own style, but click the downward arrow next to "None" in the character style window, and choose "Select All Uses of None" and it will highlight all the hyperlinks. You can now click your character style and it will be applied to all the hyperlinks.
I don't know if this is a bug as such (as the style is not "None"  - it is Apple's default style for hyperlinks) but at least it does the job.

  • Pages '08 eliminates styles?

I've been reading reviews on pages '08 and there is talk of the new formatting bar, but no one has mentioned if the Styles feature has been removed. I use styles for my documents and was wondering if Pages 08 eliminated them in favor of the formatting bar.
    Thanks.

The formatting bar saves me "trips" to the menus to make changes in a paragraph. Then I can create a new style or redefine the existing one. In AppleWorks I used "copy ruler" which would copy margins & spacing mostly, but not fonts or font sizes, which I could then "paste ruler" to other paragraphs. Styles save the need to have to constantly make changes elsewhere.

  • I am forced to hold shift and refresh the page on 99% of the sites I visit. How do I fix this from happening? If I don't the pages are missing style sheets and etc.

When ever I go to sites they half load or are missing style sheets. If I view the source for the page and click on a style sheet link I get the following error:
    Content Encoding Error
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.
If I hold shift and refresh the page loads as normal.
It's happening on 99% of the sites I visit. I have disabled my plugins and add-ons.
I do have some add-ons or plugins that I would like to remove completely but there is no uninstall or remove option, neither in regular or safe mode.

  • Pages 5.5 Tables Bug?

So I updated to Yosemite and upgraded iWork to the latest versions, which included Pages 5.5.  Upon opening several different documents which I had saved in the previous version of Pages (5.2.2), I found that the tables in these documents were not displaying in the same way as they used to.  The problem seemed to be that Pages 5.5 refuses to make a table that has too many rows for one page flow onto the next page.  It simply moves the entire table to the next page.
I did a few tests with a new document created in Pages 5.5 with the following results:
1st Test: Created a new document, adding text to cover half of the first page, then inserted a table underneath.  Increasing the number of rows to the point where the table no longer fits on page one causes the entire table to move to page 2.
2nd Test: With the same document as above, I increased the number of rows of the table until it could no longer fit on an entire page.  Pages correctly flowed the table from page two to page three.
3rd Test: With the same document as above, I deleted the text and whitespace on page one.  This forced the table back to page one, and Pages successfully flowed it to page two.  But now, adding any text above the table on page one causes a bizarre result: the table moves down and the rows which flowed onto page two display correctly, but the first part of the table is entirely invisible.  It isn't just a drawing problem, since zooming in and out does not help.  See screenshot below (notice the row numbers are in the 30s, proving that this is the second part of the table).
4th Test: I saved the document to iCloud Drive and then reopened it.  This results in absolutely nothing of the table being displayed, not even the second half.  I have not figured out any way to make the table display itself.  Opening this document on an iPad, Pages shows me the text on the first page, with the table flowing from page two to page three.
Anyone else noticing similar difficulties?  I have documents that I had created in native Pages 5.2.2 format that were able to flow a table from one page to the next, so this looks a lot like a bug introduced by the 5.5 update.
    Sincerely,
    Alexander Dominic

I think i found the reason for this behavior.
The tables are fine. It depends on a layout option that seems to be activated by default. In the inspector-panel is a "more…" There you can select the option "Avoid lonely lines" (dunno english term) When the section with the table is selected and you uncheck this feature everything is as expected.
    Apple should change the defaults
    See the screenshots attached.

  • Pages Copy & Paste Style Buttons don't change font size and style?

Shouldn't the font size and style also be copied and pasted when I use the buttons to copy & paste the style within a page?

    Hello
It seems that the description of these buttons in the Help is not clear.
After several attempts, one may understand that they don't apply to attributes inserted "by hand" with cmd + B for instance but to "styles" defined in the Styles drawer.

  • Looking for a way to load 100 pages without images/style

    Hi,
I have a bookmark folder that contains nearly 100 pages
I can right-click on the folder and choose "Open all in tabs", which is what I want, but I'd like to get rid of all the pictures/style otherwise it lags and eats too much bandwitdh.
I don't really need those, I just want to have the pages loaded once.
Any suggestions on how to do so ?
    ty!

hello, you can use the quickjava extension in order to disable the loading of such elements conveniently: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/quickjava/

  • Addining additional page types or styles to the pages icon drop down list

in the tool bar - pages - i have one page of latintype of text as the only choice. How do I add other types of page layout or templates to this drop down list that only has the one page of weird text on it?
    I am stuck. thanks.

    Hello pbmb,
Pages is a document-centric editor. That means all you editings and saves will stored in the document. This is why Pages provides templates. It is like heaving a library of documents, sections and objects. So if you need something often, create a template of it and you will have it with two clicks at hand. Yes, it would be nice to have real customer created libraries of paragraph styles and objects or masks, directly at hand by one click like the Pages objects, etc. Maybe this will come in next versions when Pages will grow up more and more.
I can't imagine why the section templates (Pages names it pages, too) doesn't work for you the way I described in this thread. You wrote above you have saved it as a document. Have you opened exact this document and the saved creations were not there? I only want to solve this problem, so please write to us if a saved document template (menu: "File/Save as Template...") with such created section templates are not working fine.
I know it can be frustrated not to achieve the goals easily or not in the way we know right. Pages goes an other way and - despite little adversities - I find the workflow and handling very good. I am missing some features to name Pages a pro app, but I have done some pro designs with it. If you are interested in using Pages further more, I will write an in-depth tutorial about the topic "Section Templates".
