Pages 5.1 trashing format on docs with alternating margins
We are working on a book that (like most books) has alternating left/right marigns ("gutters") and alternating left/right footers (page numbers) and headers (title of book on the verso, title of chapter on the recto). I know the Pages 5.1 cannot do any of this, nor can it view "page spreads," but we discovered to my chagrin that it actually strips out such formatting if you open a document that contains it. There are several chapters this happened to in my office for whcih we do not have a Pages 09 backup. Is there anyway to recover the formatting?
The person who said that Pages 5 was an "unmitigated disaster" was right, but he forgot to add, it's not a disaster in the passive sense, like a bombed-out building, it is an active disaster, like foot and mouth disease or a radioactive site. It's not just that it can;t do ordinary word processing tasks, like insert book marks or format with alternating left/right marigns, it actuially damages work you've already done. Amazing.
Pages 5.01 & 5.1 are supposed to warn you.
Pages 5 was Apple's practical joke on all its trusting users.
You probably still have Pages '09 in your Applications/iWork folder.
Rate/review Pages 5 in the App Store and go for the one that actually works.

I cannot send a Pages document, Word via email if the doc contains a picture. If I email a Pages doc without a pic in Word format or pdf with a pic it with go through to sender? Not sure why Pages won't send Word doc with a picture in it. I check the security on the email recipient and the email doesn't get blocked or throw in the junk box?

drainguy41If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, Save As… has returned to the File menu when you hold down the Option/alt key. But you don't really "save" as other file types, you translate & export as Word or RTF or text or PDF & that is easily done by going to File > Export or Share > Export.
Also, please do us all a favor & don't use all capitals in your posts, either the body of the post or the title. All caps is the internet equivalent of shouting & is very hard to read. -
Open Word docs with the new Pages?
Pages does not open. I had the new one installed but apparently had the old one still up. How can I open Word docs with the new Pages?
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

I created a pdf form from a Word doc with 9 pt aerial font formatting; the text on the pdf form is aerial 9 pt, but the fields are formatted in courier 12 pt - How do I reformat the font in the fields??
You can set up a temporary button (or link, bookmark, etc.) and add the following JavaScript action:

It also sets the font size, but you can remove that line if you don't need to do that. -
I have my Mac with Mountain Lion and my IPad synched and have Pages on both. I have doc in Word on my Mac I want to access on my IPad while I am away travelling. But I can't locate them. Where should I look to find my previously saved Word docs?

It looks like you haven't got them on iCloud. On your Mac, open Pages and drag the Word documents to the iCloud window -

Menu > Pages > About Pages
Can you select the footer? And what is in the footer?
Sometimes Word has these things in separte textboxes under other things and you need to lassoo them to get rid of them.

Can anyone recommend an alternative software programme to Pages? I have an OS X 10.7.5 macbook pro, so I am unable to get it. I want a programme that I can create docs with pictures and text on, invitations, posters etc. Many thanks in advance…..

Do I have to Replace Every Word doc with a New Pages doc?
Everytime I open an old Word document (I now use Pages exclusively) in Pages, I have to re-save the document as a Pages document. The old Word file stays on my computer, as I'm creating something new, a Pages document. I now am left with two files: the old Word file, and the new Pages file. Is there some sort of "batch" operation, a way to convert ALL my word files on my HD into Pages files?
Or (more realistically) is there a way to have Pages automatically REPLACE the Word file with the new Pages file, so that I'm left with 1 new file, not 1 old and 1 new.

LeeThe difference between the two files is that one's extension is .doc and the other's is .pages. So, for the Pages document to replace the Word document, it's name would need to be "Testdoc.doc" instead of "Testdoc.pages" as it would normally save. This may cause problems in the future since .doc isn't a Pages document, so that wouldn't be something you'd want to do for documents you intend to keep.
It seems that Automator would be a good choice for this, but I don't know enough about Automator to be able to say if it can be done or how to do it. -
I am trying to make Pages the default app when opening .doc (MS Word) files. I try selecting a .doc file in Finder, Get Info, and select Pages from the "Open with" drop-down list and Pages is displayed. When I click "Change All...", then "continue" on the confirmation dialog, the drop down box immediately switched back to Microsoft Word and nothing is changed.
Any Ideas on this would be much appreciated!Hi Hank

Pages '09 docs with imbedded images crash app after OS 10.6 upgrade
I'm unable to open Pages '09 docs with imbedded images (JPG, GIF, TIF, etc) since upgrading to 10.6. I have not seen the same behavior from Pages docs w/o imbedded images. Permission repair lists no errors; can re-install iWork '09 if needed. Below are portions of the report the OS sends back to Apple:

Thanks.After further investigation, I need to refine my evaluation of the problem. I'm able to insert JPG, GIF, and TIF files taken from WWW or CS.
The issue is not with Pages, but with MakeMusic's Finale. You are able to export score/part examples as graphic files (TIF in v2008). As a music teacher, I'm importing those TIFs into pre-existing Pages documents for student assessment.
I've now been unable to open those TIFs directly in Preview or Finder Quick Look. It seems the expected information about a TIF in SN is no being produced by Finale.
I have consulted MakeMusic's forums and currently, there are no official statements from MakeMusic on the compatibility of 2008-2010 versions with SN.

Can't open Word docs with Pages 08
Since upgrading to SL I found that I can no longer open Word documents sent to me via email attachments. Can this be remedied? I thought Macs were able to "translate" Word files.
Help!I did discover I can open Word docs with Text Edit, but it's a multi-step process now. I really don't want to upgrade to iWork 09 and I'm not sure that would solve the problem. I also have to use Quick Time now to open movies in iPhoto. Another multi-step process. I'm not very happy with SL.

Converting MS Word docs with coloured bacgrounds to pdf
Forgive an Acrobat 'dope' but this outwardly appears to be a simple problem ....... that I can't figure out!
For work I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 (MS Office Pro 2003) and Acrobat 8 Pro. I have no problem converting an MS Word doc, with background or foreground images and text, into a pdf. However, if I give any MS Word doc a coloured background, using the Format Menu > Background > and then selecting a colour, that colour is not carried across in the conversion to pdf - I end up with a standard white page, instead of the coloured one!
Where am I going wrong? Or is this coloured background something that Acrobat won't convert, whatever I do? I don't wish to produce a 'pseudo' effect by placing a coloured image behind the text (which I know will work) because the pdf file sizes become larger than I want. I want to 'colour the paper' using MS Word's menu, and convert to a pdf with that same 'coloured paper' being the result. Is it possible? If so, how?
Thanks, in advance, for any help that may be available out there ......In WORD: TOOLS>Options>Print>Background Colors and Images (I already had background printing checked, but that refers to the printing process, not the background. Checking this other box does the trick. It is probably off by default to keep from using ink in regular printers.)

Converting Word (97-2003) docs with tables
I have tried converting a few Word docs with tables using Acrobat.com. There is one small image in the upper right corner that in the converted doc stays in the same place so I know that is not the issue. What happens is that the converted document takes a nicely formatted document with tables and nested tables and turns it into a 4 page document and places all of the information in a larger table in the first column and looks nothing like the original with the exception of the header.
I figured out that if I save the file to ODT that only the font gets changed (but this can be fix on my end by using a supported font). However, the person responsible for converting documents in the future after me neither has Acrobat pro or a way to save files in ODT format (they refuse to upgrade to Word 2007 for some reason so no ODT or Convert the PDF/XPS plug-in for them) so Acrobat.com is a sollution I was looking into to keep productivity going.
If needed, I can send the original documents for anyone who would like to troubleshoot them and give feedback on what I could try so that they will work on Acrobat.com in ODT format.Thank you for your post. Would you please send along some sample files to us? Please reference this forum post, and I'll pass the files along to our QA folks for testing. Hopefully we'll be able to resolve the issue shortly! One more thought - you might try either creating your original document in Buzzword, then converting to PDF OR importing the word file to Buzzword, making any edits, and then converting to PDF. Could help. Let us know!

Put a Landscape page in a Portrait format Document

SebastiaoDepends on your version, and what you mean by a landscape page.
CS 4 allows you to rotate a spread view, but the page size and shape remain the same. This is what most people mean by a landscape page in a portrait doc, but you might really mean a page the same height, but wider, that needs to fold out -- common in technical work. For that you need to add a page or more to your spread (and don't forget that page also has a reverse, so add it to the corresponding opposite spread, too).
For earlier versions of ID you can rotate the text frame on the page where the table goes and tip your head, or you can make a separate document and combine it in a book, but ultimately you'll need to either rotate it back for printing or do the fold-out as above, so I'd stick with rotating the frame for just one or two tables.
Fold-out pages require special handling and a discussion with the printer.
