Pages 5.5 Spell check

Why doesn't the spell check in Pages 5.5 work at all?  Anyone else having this problem?
(God, I wish they'd bring back AppleWorks...)

I'm having the exact same problem as you, Bmartinak, and don't use spelling corrections while I'm typing for very similar reasons.
Using: MacBook Pro June 2011, Yosemite, Pages 5.5. Spellcheck stopped working after I installed Yosemite and upgraded to the new pages, so I presume it's a bug. Wondering if anyone has found a Terminal fix or some other workaround. And Tom Gewecke, your reference to the "afterwards feature" rather dates you and me (and maybe Bmartiniak)...  this "feature" is how things used to happen back in the day: we wrote something as correctly as possible the first time, and checked it for mistakes afterwards, then fixed them. Typewriter ribbon with white-out was an innovation. God I'm old. I just want to be able to write on a clean page and then hit a button to perform a spell check. How complicated is that?

  • Pages IWORK'08 spell check doesn't work--here's the fix

Pages stopped spell checking. Some suggested deleting com.apple.iwork.pages.plist off the HD in case Pages was corrupted so it could rebuild the spell check feature but that was not necessary in my case.  Here is the painless fix.
    -Open a pages document
-Go to Edit and SELECT ALL
-Then go to INSPECTOR  text  (blue T) MORE and be sure language is set to English, then close out of Inspector
-Go to EDIT, SPELLING and set “check spelling as you type”  or "Check spelling"
Just remember that PAGES needs to know what you want to do so you have to SELECT ALL for it to check everything on the document.

That is not sufficient if you have not also corrected your Text Styles to the appropriate language.
Text is styled with a language, usually the default, just as it is with a font or color.
Unless you update all your styles and use them, every time you reintroduce new text or use those like Free Form you will have text with either the wrong language or no language.

  • Pages, other languages, spell check

I have Pages 08 and it serves me well but recently I have needed to use other languages and check spelling. Is there a language pack? Do I have to buy the new version? Other software? Anyone know? I'll bet someone does.
I have tried changing the language in Inspector and in system preferences but it doesn't seem to take effect. Meanwhile Mail is doing spell checks from what I guess  is the source to do this.

Language is an attribute of the text (like bold or color etc) so you have to select the text and apply a language to it from the Inspector.
Not all languages have dictionaries and not all the dictionaries are as comprehensive as the English versions.
You can get extra dictionaries from OpenOffice and add them to your system and there are also 3rd party dictionaries available.

  • Have IOS5 and new Pages version. Spell check in French does not work

Pages works fine on my IPadI, but how can I get it to spell check in French, used to work fine with other version.
Checked my preferences on my IPad, they are french. What to do?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Checked and yes I did have Pages in French and had the French keyboard checked on my IPad preferences.  Your suggestion reminded me of that "world key". Read something about it, long time ago.  Never used it before but when I taped it, it brought me a choice of keyboards, so now I can go back and forth from English to French on my Pages texts, and all that without going back to my system preferences!
Thank you for the comment, helped jog my memory.

  • Pages - why no spell check/grammar icon?

I'm a writer. I want to like Pages. It's very clean-looking. But simple things like not being able to click on a spell check or grammar check icon really irritates. Why do I have to go up to Edit, then down to Spelling & Grammar, then click again...
    What a faff.
Yes, I can do the shortcut keystroke. But what about giving the option of a spellcheck icon here, Apple?
    Adrian, London

Well, yours must be a rhetorical question because no one here works for Apple, or understands the decisions made by the Pages design/engineering team. The closest you will get to avoid menu navigation for spelling and grammar check are the built-in keyboard shortcuts:
Show Spelling and Grammar - command + :
    Check Document Now - command + ;
You can communicate directly with the Pages team via feedback, but do not reserve great expectations. Throngs of frustrated users have been using this Pages feedback mechanism with nothing to show for it in the last twelve months (Pages v5).

  • Pages won't spell check after page 15?!?!

I have a pages document that will only underline or spell check words before page 15. After that, nothing is underlined or spell checked when right clicked on. Any ideas whats going on or how to fix it?

I have the same dilemma. The spell checker on pages seriously lacks.
Also i don't think my proofreader works. When I highlight a word and click proof read, it automatically skips to the next underlined word.
I'm about to go back to Word.

  • Pages 08+Korean Spell Checking

Hey there! I have not purchased iWorks 08 but if this feature is in Pages 08 I'm sold! lol I type a lot in Korean and I noticed that Office 2004 for Mac doesn't have like a spellcheck for Korean. It has a spell check for Japanese and a lot of European languages. But does Pages 08 have like a spellcheck ability for use when typing in Korean? Like a language package or something? Thanks everyone in advance for the help!

i found it when I went to their website and went to purchase up at the top. then I had to go to one of their partner stores. They have one on the east and west coast of the US. and then I just clicked on the software and found a 2006 version of the software he was talkin about. it's a lil pricey tho...
but thank you so much for helping me out with that product daniel! do u use this program? now is it like a plugin or is it an actual Word Processor. Because I was looking at it and it seems like that for the Windows side. But how bout the Mac version of it?

  • Spell check option to skip master pages

I'm still running CS3 so perhaps this has already been solved for but I need a spell check option to ignore the master pages. I'm a magazine designer and our master pages contain placeholder text so we can work our layouts before we have final copy. Problem is we can never run an effective spell check because there is no option to ignore the master pages so a spell check tries to check the lorum ipsum text rendering it useless. It would be wildy helpful if in the search dropdown option you could select "no masters" or something of the sort. Similar to the option in the Find/Change search dropdown, where you can choose "story" instead of "document"; in fact, this same functionality in Find/Change would be great as well. Also, "Story" is a good option, the whole document minus the master pages would be even better. That way we could check all of the active text in the document, including folios, rubrics and captions that are divided from the story.
Let me know if I can explain this better.

    Peter,
I'm familiar with the workaround. Trouble is when you place or paste
your text in later, you have to remember to take it off of "no
language" or it will continue to ignore the text. We're dealing with
editors here, with very quick turnarounds, and the whole idea is not
to make a mistake. Just think how easy it would be to forget to turn
off "no language", run a spell check and think you're good to go to
press. ... and don't say InCopy has the solution, because its not a
useful product for us; it's cumbersome and doesn't serve us well at
all. I really think adding functionality that would allow you to
simply filter out the master pages in a spell check would be an
    excellent help.
Have you tried creating customized placeholder text, something like "Replace this placeholder text with real text and tag the replacement text with such-and-such paragraph style." instead of lorem ipsum? You do this by creating a text file named "placeholder.txt" that contains your customized text, and saving it in the main InDesign directory. When you perform Type > Fill With Placeholder Text, the customized text appears with instructions.
You can create object styles for the placeholder text frames that apply the no-language paragraph style. You can make the no-language paragraph style a color, bold, etc, to call even more attention to it.
A simpler option would be to assure that all the text in your customized placeholder.text file is spelled correctly, so it doesn't get a hit when spell checking.
Being able to omit Master pages from spell checks is a good idea. Would you want it to be a scope option in the spell checker, or a property of a master page? If it were a master page property, you could specify which master pages are skipped. You can enter a formal feature request at

  • Dictionary for spell checking

    Hi,
why can't I change the dictionary that Pages uses for spell checking as I can in any other application?
    Best Regards,
    Michael

    Dear Foretcalme,
I was reading your post and looked for the pull-down menu you mentioned for changing the language of the text. At first I had the same problem you had, I would change it from one language to another and it would switch back when I went back to the document. Then I realized that you need to select text in your document and THEN change the language. Think of it like bold. You have to bold text. If you just bold where the cursor is, nothing gets bolded. I hope that makes sense. When I did that all the red marks went away and it was able to correct spelling in the correct language.
This method is actually better because then you could select some text in the document and set it to one language and select other text in the same document and set it to another language. Multiple languages in the same document and the spelling dictionaries take it all in stride. It is actually very useful.
    Hope this helps.

  • Spell Check with All Caps Not Working

I feel like i'm missing something that should be pretty easy. I've searched both in the forums and the help file for pages 09, but can't seem to find it. so maybe i'm missing something fairly obvious...
but, i can't figure out how to get pages to do spell check on a word that is in ALL CAPS. For instance, if i type 'bddy' it shows up with a red-line underneath it, but if i type, "BDDY" there is no red-line.
how do i get it to stop skipping the words in all caps?

There's also no mention of this in the Pages '09 User Guide, which I'd go to before the Pages Help files.
Looks like a design choice to assume that anything that is ALL CAPS is to be treated as an acronym.
    Your choices seem to be:
    1. Don't use all caps, except for acronyms, and check closely that you make no typos in acronyms.
    2. Use lower case for acronyms so that the spell checker will flag them. Replace with ALL CAPS when you do a final spell check. (Acronyms that form properly spelled words will need an extra character added to cause the spell checker to flag them.
    3. Copy the text you want to check and paste it into an application that will flag acronyms. For word processors, this seems to require one that uses its own dictionary rather than the Mac OS X dictionary.*
    4. Do your writing/editing in a word processor fitting the description in #3. Transfer the text to Pages only for formatting (or not at all).
    Regards,
    Barry
    * One such 'application' is the Compose frame in this forum, running on Firefox (I haven't checked it on Safari).
PS: With luck, someone will have a more workable suggestion than the ones above.
PPS: Addition of the option to check or ignore ALL CAPS words in spell checking seems a natural for a feature enhancement request. Got to the "Pages" menu in Pages, choose Provide Pages Feedback, make the request, then be prepared to wait until at least the next full version of iWork to see any results.

EDIT: See, my PS was correct. Peter's suggestion is simpler than some of mine.

  • Pages 08 Spell Checker Not Working

When I started using Pages 08, I turned on the Spelling --> Check Spelling As You Type. One day it stopped to work, in fact I do not know whether it is working or not since the red lines that highlighted incorrectly-spelled text no longer appeared. I tried turning the feature on and off several times, and fiddled with Text Inspector, but have foind no solution to this. Please advise, anyone. Thanks.

Repairing Permissions did not do anything for me. I have tried various and other sundry things as found in other messages about this major issue w/ Pages, but to no avail. Spell check works fine in other apps, TextEdit for example.

  • Pages 08 spell checker not working after pasting in a windows document.

I am working Pages 08. I pasted a Windows document ( Microsoft word I am assuming ? ) that I saved from another email account(not safari, school based) into my Pages document. Now the spell checker will not work in the Pages document only, Works fine everywhere else. Even if I paste the Pages text into a new document the checker will not work in the document. Any suggestions /

I figured it out. The language was set to none in the inspector

  • Pages 08 - Spell check as you type has stopped working

    Hi,
My Pages 08, which is ticked to 'check spelling whilst typing' is no longer checking spelling as I type.
It was working fine yesterday, but has stopped today.
Moreover, it's not even spell checking when I ask it to do it manually.
    Can anyone help?
    Regards,
    Mont3

I didn't install the British English language on my machines so I can't check the behavior of Pages when this language is the first one.
Here is the brute force way describer for the Blank template used in WP mode.
It would be the same for others.
    ctrl click the Pages.app icon
    show package's contents
    open Contents
    open Resources
    open Templates
    open Blank
    ctrl click Blank.template
    duplicate index-iso.xml.gz or index-trad.xml.gz in a safe area (folder named Pages-Blank-template ).
    double click index-iso.xml.gz or index-trad.xml.gz
You will get index-iso.xml or index-trad.xml
Open it with TextEdit or TextWrangler for instance.
    Search for
    <sf:language><sf:null/></sf:language>
    Replace all occurences by
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="en_GB"/></sf:language>
    save index-iso.xml or index-trad.xml
for English, the replacement string would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="en"/></sf:language>
    for French it would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="fr"/></sf:language>
    for Spanish it would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="sp"/></sf:language>
The next time you will use this template, it will default to British English everywhere.

  • Is there a way to make the spell check work on the entire web page without making the content editable? Or at least those boxes that appear when you enable spell check on the entire page, can you make them disappear?

I found an addon that allows you to spell check on the webpage but it make the entire page editable and these boxes appear on everything i highlight. Can i get rid of the boxes?

I had thought this situation was solved but it just got worse. In addition to being without service for several days I am now being charged  a cancellation fee for a broadband service that BT disconnected in error. BT Vision was also terminated by BT but the set up charges are still in place. Does anyone know who the relevant Ombudsman is? I called BT from America on Friday - for an hour - while someone called Aruj sorted out why there is an order 'in progress' that I didn't initiate; why I have fees relating to a problem created by BT and why there are references to a house move that didn't take place and a BT Vision service I no longer have but didn't cancel myself. He assured me it would be rectified and my bill would be reduced by 139 pounds and we would get confirmation of this later that day. I asked him what chance there was that this would not actually happen - he said no chance at all; my new bill would be 23.50.
There was no text message. An online chat person today told me there had been a fee reduction request which had been declined and there was nothing else he could help me with as he dealt only with broadband. But he would get BT Vision to email me. They always seem so helpful.............
I'm sure I'm listed somewhere as 'a problem', there's no other explanation for why I get the runaround
