Pages 5 in Mavericks no longer opens Text files?- need to open old Clarisworks files

My 90 year old uncle clung to ClarisWorks, Appleworks far too long
He still has Claris Works documents he needs to open. Some so old that even AppleWorks version  6x, the final version of AppleWorks could not open!)
In Mountain Lion, he could open the older Clarisworks- Appleworks documents in TextEdit  , save as  .TXT file and then open that file in Pages
Tonight, after installing OS 10.9  ( Mavericks)he finds this work around unrelable : Sometimes the new Pages cannot open the .TXT message
How do  I help him convert his old documents?
( he saved  names and addresses in to Claris Works documents instead of entering into his Contacts/Address Book so now he is panicky to retrieve the addresses as he starts working on his holiday greeting and gift mailings)

Will the old Pages run under Maverick?
IF so that will be something to try
Old Pages did not open up the old Clarisworks docs but Pages 09 DID respond when we changed the extension of the CW documents to "TXT".
So , Uncle can try using Pages 09
We also can try Libre
I can install Text Wrangler- there was some advice that it will open the old CW files.
My concern is that Uncle IS 90years of age. He is remarkable using a Mac but he needs, wants everything to be straightforward and resists, cannot handle any process requiring too many steps
The need to use an intermediary translation system (CW->TXT->Pages) is stressful for him.
Such a shame that Apple did not program a translator to open the files made by its previous proprietary software (ClarisWorks and Appleworks)
Thanks all

  • I need to access old MacDraw files

I kept my old Pismo PowerBook in order to be able to run OS 9.2 and old applications that were not brought on to the OSX platform.
When I went to open some old MacDraw files I discovered that somehow the translator for MacDraw no longer was available to ClarisDraw or ClarisImpact.
Does anyone out there have a copy of the translators, or can tell me where/how to get hold of it. I do not recall if ClarisDraw was distributed with OS 9.2. If so, I somewhere have the CD's and could reinstall or repair the programs. Can anyone tell me how CLarisDraw and Imppact was distributed?

The Claris (boxed) programs (MacWrite, MacDraw, MacPaint, etc.) shipped with floppy disk installers and a spiral-bound user manual.  In the early to mid-90s, they were combined into the single program "ClarisWorks," which was included as bundled software (on the OS restore disk) with the Performas running OS 7.5, sold for home or educational use.  The program included built-in translators, to read files created by the older versions of its component programs.  With version 5, ClarisWorks was re-named "AppleWorks."  You can download/install the final version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 (available here), but I seem to recall (from another Forum topic about a year ago) that some of the older translators were no longer included with the newest/final release of the program.  Because the Claris Corporation sold boxed, retail versions of the program, you should check eBay for ClarisWorks 4 on CD (ClarisWorks 3 may run on OS 9.2 - I haven't tried it).  I'm suggesting version 4, because it may have translators that weren't included with version 5 - but I don't know that for sure.  Apple's support page for AppleWorks can be found here.

  • How can I open my Illustrator 5.5 (really old!) files in CS5?

Stupid question, I know, but I know just enough about
this to be dangerous. I have been using the 5.5 program for
about 14 years on the same Mac; I just
bought a new iMac, and CS5....How do I open those old files?
    Thanks in advance!

    Jacob and Ashuto-
Thanks to you both! I hadnt selected the proper line in the dialog box when it asked what to use to open the file. I did get the legacy warning, but it opened just fine! Now I get to transfer 14 years of artwork from FLOPPY DISC (!) to flash drives...the advancements are great :-)
    Thanks again!

  • Need viewer for old AI files

I have a large number of drawing files created with AI (version 3 or 4).  Is there a viewer that can display AI files and more specifically files created with such an old version of AI?  I do not need to modify these files only view/print them.  Any help is appreciated.

However if you have the CS 4 and CS 5 version of the Bridge you can view the previews without opening the files.
This is a file saved as version 3 as sen in the Bridge.
And there is a preview window as well that gives you a larger view

  • .ear file re-deploy uses old staging files in 8.1

    Hi All,
Issue: Everytime we deploy new .ear file, we have to redeploy the .ear file from console.
Issue details: We recently upgraded to WLS 8.1 SP3 from WLS7.0 SP5. After the upgrade we noticed a problem when re-deploying the .ear file. We put the .ear in the applications directory (we are running the server in development mode) When we deploy, there is a directory <appname>/stage that is created which contains the exploded .ear file. This is then used for creating the directory .wlnotdelete. If I make a change to the application, whether it is in a jsp, properties file or java code, and create a new .ear in the applications folder and re-deploy, the new changes appear not to be picked up. The new .ear file is not exploded into the stage directory unless I remove this directory and its contents.
    Thanks,
    Srinivas

This seems a bug to me. Please file a support case.

  • Archive and install failed in process... I need to intgreate old sys files

I did a archive and install and it failed. I got replacement disks but the archive did not copy back. I now have a previous system folder I can not integrate. How can I activate the old users?

If you're an Admin user you can do a Get Info on them & change the Rights & Permissions, or Might try BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6440
You might run into some real trouble with Sys>Library though, as it's in use by the OS/Disk you're booted from.

  • How do I save them as files to re-open?

I have like 3 websites being built in my sites list on the left, but I want to close one I finished, do I have to leave it in the list to keep it saved or can I save it as an actual iWeb file somehow as well as exporting it?
Also...if I have 3 websites on the go and I just want to export ONE...how do I do that? every time I click export to folder it does all 3 I have open.
    Thanks

You need separate your domain.sites file.
You can do this by hand by following the directions on Apnewbie's Site Separation help page.
Or you can use the free program iWebsites.
There is also a new program called Multisite.
I separated mine by hand. Lots of folks here use iWebsites and are very happy with it. I've not heard as much about Multisite.
Note that your domain file is the only link to an editable version of your site. The files that are published to .mac or to a folder are not a backup. iWeb cannot reimport published files. So back up your domain files on a regular basis.

  • Browser file won't open

I'm trying to open a file of media clips & sequences to the browser. They're in Documents>Capture Scratch>P2 folder. When I click on P2 folder it opens the list in the right column. But it won't open the whole list in the brower where I need them. It normally opens right up. Any thoughts? Thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Basically I want to reopen a tab in the Browser. The tab contains video clips & sequences.
To get multiple tabs in the Browser, means that you need to have multiple projects open. You need to open the project that has that P2 footage organized in it.

  • Need more disk memory--Deleting files

I am trying to delete and back up documents, pictures, etc. because I only have 3 Gigs of space, not enought memory to upgrade to the new operating system. I am still running on Leopard (sigh) I found a folder named, "scanner output" with all the photos I have scanned onto my computer and have either emailed to friends and family or uploaded to iphoto.  Am I ok to delete these files to open up memory space? Will it delete any of the photos I have in iphoto?

If the scanner output is a separate folder, this will not do anything to your iPhoto Library.
Before arbitrarily deleting items, you have the option of either burning your data to discs, Flash drives or purchasing an external hard drive and copying or cloning your important data there.
I would save the data rather than deleting it. You never know when you might have a need to recover old data files.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard drive.
You'll need to free up lots of hard drive space.
At a minimum, at least, 15 to 20 GBs of space.
    Perhaps even more.
Hard drive full or near full:
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded  .dmg application installer  files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • HT3258 How can I convert Clariswork files to be used on my iMac OSX 10.8.3

  • Mavericks won't accept 'change all' command to open ALL pages files with v 4.3 app

    Hello again,
I upgraded my MacBook Air mid June 2013 build to Mavericks at my Apple store. The download was fast, under 30 min., and the installation went well, also fast at about 40 minutes. All apps are working fine. I spent much time before taking the plunge to learn the pros and cons of this upgrade, and the biggest issue for me was the ability to keep using the older versions of Pages and Numbers.  The new, watered down versions cannot do what I need. I followed the instructions to select a Pages file in Finder, open the Info pane, and under 'Open with' selected the old version. Then, to apply this to ALL the files, I selected 'Change all...' and 'Continue'. But, it still lists the new version as default. So far, the only fix is to go through ALL my files and manually choose the old version for each. Very laborious. Am I missing something? It seems Mavericks will not accept to change them all for some reason.
    Thank you, Cinilla

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • How can I put OSX 10.7 on a new Macbook Air. Maverick no longer allows "open file in a new window" and I really miss it. At the Apple Store they told me it can't be added to the new OSX 10.10 so I  want to change the OSX on the new Macbook Air and it

I have been using a 2012 Mac pro to do HD video editing. I bought a new portable Macbook Air only to find that Maverick no longer has "open files in a new window" which I use all the time in the very large folders of video clips and royalty-free music. I asked at the Apple Store how I could get this back on the Macbook Air and they said it couldn't be done so I thought I would re-format the HD and install 10.7 on it and was notified by the Macbook Air I can't put 10.7 on that computer. Apple use to give this as an option but now they have gone more to the attitude of "Do it our way or go to ****!" In anger I went out and bought a Dell Laptop and Pinnacle Studio 17 which I have been learning to use. I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1979 and would still rather do my video editing on a Mac. Is there any way that I can force the Macbook Air to let me load in OSX 10.7 where there is still the option to  "open files in a new window" or is there a way to add this to Maverick? The experts at the Madison, WI Couldn't give me any help on this.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and uncheck the box to open folders in a new tab.

  • No longer have a system that can run Freehand but have 1000's of old Freehand files. Can I convert them to something CC can open, like AI?

I had a graphic design business for 10 years and at the time found Freehand to be the best solution.  Now I'm an InDesign convert but many of the old freehand files I wish I could open and convert to something in CC.  I need to rebuild my portfolio and many of those old Freehand files are great works of art.  I no longer have a system that will run Freehand, is there something I can run that would convert these files to Illustrator or something usable.  I wish adobe would at least make a patch so I can run it on my Mac long enough to get the key files I want.  Anyone have any suggestions or am I just screwed and 10 years of art is gone...

Your timing is actually good! This plugin was released this month for doing what you need into Illustrator CC:
    Tensai FH>AI Plugins
As to InDesign, I have been using FreeHandMX to export my files to PDF and trying out these two converters:
    PDF2DTP | Markzware
    PDF to InDesign converter
The Markzware converter seems better and they have been eager to hear from FreeHand users. Where conversion isn't exact is text and takes some tweaking. Also any problems Illustrator had with converting FreeHand files shows up in InDesign.
As for running FreeHand on the latest Macs, virtualization with Parallels and Fusion running Snow Leopard is successful and seamless. Also using WIN versions of FreeHand with CrossWeaver and WINE on Mavericks.
