Pages always opens in a super wide window with extra columns

I work with simple spreadsheets, often with just two or three columns, and usually with just one table that fits easily on a single page.
In spite of this, when I open files the opened windows are much wider that they were when saved and have additional columns that were not there when last saved. I believe sometimes the columns are wider than they were when last saved.
How can I stop this from happening?
Thanks,
Eric Weir

Hi Eric,
Your tables are definitely not likely to be growing new columns or wider columns as they sleep unopened. I don't doubt that it looks that way to you, but we need to find something else to blame this on.
With Numbers, it's best to eliminate all unused rows and columns before working with your data or Saving. Whatever columns or rows you don't need for data or calculations, delete them. Then Save. Otherwise, when you go to print your work, you'll get extra pages with blank cells on them. The Numbers way of doing spreadsheet work is that when you need to do a summary or add some different type of data, don't appropriate some unused cells in your main table, make a new table that fits what you are about to do. This way you don't have a patchwork of occupied and unoccupied cells in an oversize table.
Hope this help.

    Hi konee,
You should look at [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+has+just+updated+tab+shows+each+time+you+start+Firefox this article about that specific issue] and the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved]. These should give you all the information you need!
    If that doesn't work:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    Hopefully this helps!

It is probably a JavaScript link.
You can probably force it where you want it with a keyboard shortcut
    either "Ctrl+click" or "Ctrl+Shift+click". see

  • Windows Explorer always opens folders in a new window

Yes, yes, I've googled it already.  And bing-ed it just for fun too.
    This doesn't work:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/samewindow.htm
    Nor does this:
    http://blog.hansmelis.be/2009/05/17/windows-vista-explorer-opens-folders-in-a-new-window/
Yes, yes, I've checked the Open in same folder option in folder options.
I've used shellex to disable context menu items.
    I've rebooted a hundred times.
This is rediculous.  Windows should only recognize ONE setting for this and that is the one in folder options.  Anything else that affects it is a BUG!
    I'm on build 7100 RC.
And I'm quite frustrated with this.
    Please help!

<<...tried to import the key from that known-good windows installation ...... (but
    was 64bits)...>>
importing x64 keys to an x86 installation may not work.  HKLM\WOW6432Node\Classes\Interface would have to be combined with (overwrite)
the standard location and then that be copied/imported to the x86 install.  Even then, there might be some unanticipated problems.
It's good that you had a registry backup available in system restore.  Although I like the inherent security and reliability in the Vista/Win7 system restore implementations, one thing that I miss was being able to pluck only the registry files from
a restore point; like I used to do with WinXP.
<<...Yes, my case is precisely (Windows Explorer always opens folders in a new window) on
    Win7. ....>>
Also, that is too general.  There is more nitty-gritty details that have to be verified, such as whether the issue is per-user,
or whether the "Explore" option is in bold and works properly when manually selected.  In a lot of cases, that simply may not be in bold which means it's no longer the default action on double-click.  (requires different set of steps to resolve,
focusing on another part of the registry)  But from what you've stated on JAVA update 20, there well could be some changes to the HKLM portion of that Interface key... don't know.  A before and after registry compare usually helps pin down the issue.
    EDIT 10y04m24d_130735:
One other thing that occurs to me, is that the dreaded Yahoo toolbar often installs with Sun Microsystems's JAVA.  I've removed such toolbars on many browsers because they render IE8 unstable/unreliable with occasional to routine freezes/crashes.

  • Kate always open files in a new window after kde upgrade

kate always open files in a new window, instead of the existing window as a new document after kde upgrade to 3.5. someone else have the same experience and have a solution for that ?
    cheers,
    notz

    The problem is solved!
Apparently the Content Disposition: Attachment in the BLOB Download Format Mask does the trick.
For some reason I have to logout and login again in the application to see the change.
I tried changing the Content Disposition to Inline and then back to Attachment, and the file keeps opening in the same window unless I start a new session.
Is there any explanation why it is working that way?
    Thanks!

  • Pages always open last document

After installing Lion, Pages always open with the last document I worked on.
I've been to System Preference / General and unchecked the box about this new feature.
But Pages still does it. And only Pages. Not Keynote, not Numbers.
I seriously don't know what to do about this.
I don't even have a Save Application State folder in the Library.
    Someone?

    Hello
May you edit your signature ?
It's often useful to know the system in use to answer questions.
Your signature claims OS X 10.6.6 but it appears that you run Lion.

  • Pages always opens a new window on the wrong monitor

Is there anyway to fix this I don't understand why always open on the wrong monitor I can't seem to open on the correct one

    OS X 10.8.4:
Drag the window back to the correct monitor and position it where you want it to open. Make certain that you actively save and close your documents before quitting Pages.
In System Preferences > General, check the box adjacent to Close windows when quitting an application.
Your Shutdown, Restart, and Logout dialogs should have the “Reopen windows when logging back in” unchecked.
If this does not correct the problem, select all contents (command+A) of the following folder only, and then use the right button to select the menu item, “Move to Trash.”
    /Users/yourlogin-name/Library/Caches/
Also, drag the following file to the Trash as well:
    /Users/yourlogin-name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
Empty the Trash. (You may have to reboot to fully empty the Trash.)
The next time you launch Pages, the application window will open where you want it.

  • If I have several tabs/windows open and I go to a new page, it hijack several of my current windows with that same URL. How to stop?

I frequently have a couple of windows with several tabs in each window open. For example, I always have a small window open in the corner of my screen with a time tracking program set up. Sometimes when I open a new tab or window and go to a URL (not thru a search engine, but just directly), it will "hijack" one or more of my other tabs/windows and plug in that same URL, losing whatever I had previously open. I've checked through all the prefs and I don't see why or how this problem is happening. What gives? I'm on an iMac using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 using Firefox 34.0.5. HELP!

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • When I select a "compose email" from my GoDaddy email page, it opens up another whole Foxfire window. I can't seem to have it open into another tab instead.

When I select a "compose email" from my GoDaddy email web page, it opens up another whole new Foxfire window. I can't seem to have it open into the existing Foxfire window but just another tab instead.

Firefox diverts most new windows to tabs, but there is an exception when a website uses a script to specify the window's dimensions or removes some toolbars. To remove the exception, you can make a change under the covers. This could be awkward for genuine dialog windows that don't make sense to view in a separate tab, but if you find it more annoying than useful, you can easily switch back.
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (3) Confirm that the '''browser.link.open_newwindow''' preference is set to its default value of 3 (divert new windows to a tab instead), or right-click > Reset to get that value
    (4) Double-click the '''browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction''' preference and change the value from 2 to 0 (that's a zero) and click OK
    Any luck?
For future reference, the possible values for the window/tab preferences are:
    <strong>(A) browser.link.open_newwindow</strong>
3 = divert new window to a new tab (<u>default</u>) (checked*)
2 = allow link to open a new window (unchecked*)
1 = force new window into same tab
<strong>*</strong> First checkbox in Options &gt; Tabs
<strong>(B) browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction</strong> - for links in Firefox tabs
0 = apply the setting under (A) to ALL new windows (even script windows)
2 = apply the setting under (A) to normal windows, but NOT to script windows with features (<u>default</u>)
1 = override the setting under (A) and always use new windows
<strong>(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external</strong> - for links in other programs
-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links (<u>default</u>)
3 = open external links in a <u>new tab</u> in the last active window
    2 = open external links in a <u>new window</u>
1 = open external links in the <u>last active tab</u> replacing the current page

  • Where is the "Always open folder in new Finder Window/Tab" option ?

Prior to 10.9, we have an options to choose whether to open folders in the same window in Finder preference. But I can't find anything similiar to that in Mavericks. Now I'm forced to open folders within the same window / tab, unless I press the CMD key while double clicking on the folder, and I still yet to find a way to do so with keyboard navigation.
    Did I missed something ?

Yes I know that, but that option is completely useless, since you're forced to open a folder within the same tab.
Even with that option turned on, you still can "open folder in new tab" only by holding CMD key while double-clicking on a folder. And there is still no way to open a folder in new tab with keyboard navigation: CMD+O or CMD+Down-Arrow will always open folder within same tab.
So I consider this as a bug; maybe someone just forget to enable this option in the Finder preference dialogbox.
Is there any terminal command (defaultswrite ?) or 3rd party tool like TinkerTool, OnyX or Deeper that can change the default behavior of Finder ?

  • I prefer NOT to use "tabs" but have all new web pages I open come up in new windows...

I just downloaded the newest version of Firebox and I don't like the tabs feature. Every time I click on a link within a web page or do anything else that takes me to a different web page, please open a new window.

Links that you click on a web page should open in the same tab or in a new window if you deselect:
*Tools > Options > Tabs: [ ] "Open new windows in a new tab instead"

  • How do I make my page links open up within the same window?

I am completely stumped. By default for some reason, every single link I have on all my pages opens up in an external window rather than within the same window. I can't find anywhere to turn this off. I have my hyperlinks open to my other pages not an external page. Please help!

Are these text based hyperlinks that you created?  If so then go to the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane and make sure the checkbox to Open link in new window is unchecked.

  • After automatic update to firefox 23, the wlecome to firefox/ Android page always opens

The automatic updater did the update to Firefox 23 several days ago. Since then, when I open Firefox the add-on compatibility check runs before Firefox opens, and Firefox always opens to the Welcome to Firefox page that wants me to connect my PC with an Android phone. Considering that I don't have an Android phone, it is annoying to have to close that tab before I do anything else.
Previous updates took me to the welcome page only the first time I opened Firefox after the update. At least this time Firefox didn't try to change my home page from the one I choose to the Google search page. I can search from the toolbar if I want to; I don't need Firefox to open to the Google search page.

Thanks, that took care of this problem. Now I can go back to last week's sync problem and try those solutions.
I did have to reset my home page to the one of my choice, but that didn't take very long. I might find a few other things I need to set again, but sometimes it's nice to clean the slate so to speak and start fresh.

  • Home page always opens to bank of america website since my last update of firefox.

since my update of firefox 1 day ago, whenever I open a new page it always opens to the bankofamerica.com website. I am not a customer of theirs and have no intrest in using there site as my homepage. I have tried the old method as well as the new drag and drop method to change the homepage but it will not work.

I had this problem, too. Setting your homepage to "blank" won't do it, because none of your account settings will save when you close your browser. You will need to COMPLETELY uninstall Firefox and reinstall a whole new copy. Save your bookmarks in a word doc so you can get them back later.
I know it's a pain, and maybe someone will eventually figure out a better fix, but this works.
