Pages Auto Correction

Okay, I disabled everything under auto correction in the pages preferences. However, it's been bugging me to no end that whenever I type something along the lines of 1/100 it will correct it to a date of "Dec 3, 0099" and when I put down 2/4 it will automatically correct it to 1/2 when I don't WANT that. Also when I try 1/1000 it will put it to 1/999 and I cannot complete a lab report when it keeps messing with my numbers and I cannot stop it!

What you describe isn't the result of an auto-correction.
It's the result of the cells auto-formatting.
As it is clearly described in Numbers User Guide, when a cell is in auto-format mode, when we enter two numbers separated by a slash, the entry parser try to convert the entry as a date.
If it can't, it "reduce" the fraction which is the logical mathematical behavior.
The results are linked to the settings in use on the machine
On your machine, 1/100 become "Dec 3, 0099", I get the same behavior on my French system.
On your machine, 2/4 become 1/2. Here, I get 2 avril 2010.
On your machine, 1/1000 become 1/999. Here, I get 27 décembre 0999.
As other helpers wrote, the problem isn't an Apple's one but an user's one.
Define the cell format before entering datas and you will be able to insert what you want.
The true problem strike when the datas are stored in a Tab Separated Values text or in a CSV one.
In such case, we can't change the format before the import process.
There is a workaround : don't import the document directly.
Edit it putting a single quote in front of every value.
It's annoying for true numerical values but it's easier to switch numbers from text to numerical format than to switch dates or reduced fractions to their original state.
I will post a script to edit TSV or CSV files so that fractions remain unchanged.

  • Pages auto corrects words when I don't want it to and will not accept my word the way I want it spelled.

I am writng a paper and I have spelled someones name the correct way but pages keeps auto correcting it to something else. I have retyped the name over and over again but pages keeps changing it back to the word it thinks it is suppost to be. I have made sure the spelling features are all turned off. I can't figure out what to do. I am about to throw the stupid thing out the window. : )

    finally figured it out nevermind.

  • Pages auto correct

okay i was wondering, does pages have a feature that notices if your using the wrong form of a word? like if you used weather and it was supposed to be whether? or like the wrong there? and if it does how do i enable it?
i know microsoft word does and i was just wondering if i works did to.
    thanks!

There is a proof-reader, but I just tried it &, no, it doesn't do what you want. You probably need to get a third-party spelling & grammar checker.
The lack of capitalization makes your post difficult to read. I hate to say it, but it might be worth you composing your posts in a word processing document that can apply correct capitalization & then paste your posts into these forums.
Also, FYI, iWork is one word with no 's'.

  • Undo auto-correction for typing particular words into Pages

This is starting to drive me nuts - whenever I type the word "march" Pages automatically capitalizes it to "March". Is there any way to stop it from capitalizing this word without turning off auto capitalizing?
I realise it may sound trivial but I am using this word a fair bit and it just takes up time having to constantly go back and correct it, then I have to be careful not to change the sentence or it auto-corrects back again.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(K_Gal: This primarily addresses RHPC's issue, but does include some comments regarding yours)
    B
    RHPC:
Yours is a different issue than that described in the initial post in this thread.
Pages has several auto-correction features, all set in the auto-correction pane of Pages Preferences. The two indicated by the arrows are the significant ones in this thread as started and in your hijack of this thread.
Fix capitalization (blue arrow) applies a format (CAPITAL or UPPER) to the initial letters of 'sentences' and words identified as 'proper nouns' (such as "March") in the spelling dictionary. It performs no action on 'words' that have been typed with initial capitals.
In the examples above, the first two lines were typed with 'Fix capitalization' unchecked. The second pair of lines were typed using exactly the same keystrokes as the first, but with 'Fix capitalization' checked. Note that both occurrences of 'will' are the same in each set.
"Automatically use spell checker suggestions" (red arrow) does precisely what it says: If a 'word' is not found in the spelling dictionary, the spell checker will make a 'best guess' and suggest that as a possible replacement. If the 'Automatically use…" box is checked, then Pages will immediately accept the first suggestion, replacing the 'questionable word' with the spell checkers first ('best') suggestion.
There are at least two solutions to this issue:
Uncheck the box and don't use auto-correction. (works for either of these issues)
Teach the spellchecker the correct spelling of the Polish name. (does not work in the case of march/March, which is part of the base dictionary)
    To do this:
Go Pages (menu) > Preferences... Auto-Correction
    Uncheck the "Automatically use…" box.
    Close Preferences
Open a new Pages word processing document.
    Type the Polish name.
Ensure that the spelling and capitalization is correct.
Right click on the name and choose Learn Spelling.
    Go Pages > Preferences… Auto-Correction
    Recheck the "Automatically use…" box
    Close Preferences.
    Done.
Pages (and other applications using the system's spell checker dictionary) will now recognize the spelling of this name and will not 'correct' it.
(K_Gal: Unfortunately, when I tried this on "march" the contextual menu did not include the Learn Spelling option , probably because the dictionary already 'knew' how to spell "March". I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages message to report this to apple, and request a feature enhancement to the Fix capitalization feature.)

  • I'm having trouble with auto-correct in Pages

I am having trouble with auto-correct spelling in Pages.  I have read a past discussion of this in which I believe the last comment was made in 2012.  (I have the latest Macbook Pro purchased Dec 2012 and it is totally updated.)  The problem is just with one word, as far as I can tell.  It seems that perhaps the older problem of contractions has been resolved except for one word: "hasn't".  Auto correct insists that it should be "hans't".  I follwed the suggestions offered in the previous discussion about using SYMBOL AND TEXT SUBSTITUTION to correct the word but it hasn't worked.  Do I just have to live with this?  Surely there is a way to fix this problem?  I really like using the auto-correction and would hate to have to stop using it just for one word.  Thanks in advance for your help.

It should work if you have a Symbol and Text Substitution set for hans't → hasn't. Are you sure you have this substitution checked, or Symbol and Text Substitution checked overall?

  • I am brand new to pages and got it when I got Mavericks. The manual says there should be an "auto correction" tab in the preferences.  I don't have one. is that right?

What I am really looking to do is to turn the auto capitilization on, like it is on my iPad and iPhone.  I tried the system prferences too and couldnt find anything.

I find the New Pages to be less useful, less powerful than the Pages 09 version. Auto Correction was a Big Deal in that older program. It's only flaw was that it didn't function when writing in other word-processors from Apple. For instance, if you had a boatload of entries in Pages, then went into iBooks Author, none of your carefully prepared list of auto-correct entries were available.
Apple could have done an update in a way that allowed you to blend lists, use one or the other, or start anew, according to your preference, but no, they simply blew all your hard work away and forced you to start over.
Now you can also no longer start sentences with an automatic capital letter.
This earns the Pages undevelopment team a well-deserved "*&^%$#@!!"
Where do we send the "What the heck were you thinking" trophy? 1 Infinite loop?

  • Turning off auto-correction in pages 5.0???

Preferences used to have an "auto-correction" section where you could change the  "symbol and text substitution" settings but I cannot figure out how to do that now -- or if I even can -- and would really appreciate some help. Thanks! As a reference, here's what preferences used to look like (ignore the arrow, borrowed a screen grab from another thread):

Fruhulda, thanks for the response. I see "Language and Region" in system preferences and within that, "Keyboard" and within that, "text" but no longer see a list similar to the screen grab I included earlier -- of substitutions. For example if I don't want (c) to automatically become ©, there's nowhere to un-tick that box like before.

  • How can I get pages to correct my spelling automatically? I can't get it to change dont to don't!!!

Please help! I'm a PC to Mac converter and so I'm running into the usual problems I suspect. I probably sound a bit simple, but I've tried Edit>Spelling>Check spelling while typing but it's basically just giving me the red line underneath and not auto correcting.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    H

Are you sure that you did that in the app's preferences ?
There is a similar setting at system level but it doesn't apply to Pages.
Here I took a screenshot of the System Preferences pane.
iWork apps are too old to benefit of this one.
    They use their dedicated scheme.
I may be wrong but it would be useful to double check.

  • Why did Word on Office 2013 REMOVE Auto Correct from Right-Click Context Menu??

    Hi Microsoft -
I normally don't rant, but this is a killer feature removal, and the reason given is for aesthetics - 'Removal of clutter" is how it's worded here:
    [Changes in Office 2013]
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178954(en-us).aspx
I copy n pasted below the operative row from the linked TechNet page as to the reason WHY this critical (and very popular feature) has been removed from Microsoft Office 2013 Word's context-menu: LESS CLUTTER
And your answer is ambiguous and doesn't solve the issue that you created to make things prettier: "Click the AutoCorrect Options button" Then what?  ADD EACH WORD MANUALLY?
Please advise ALL OF US that want this feature back how to have our commonly misspelled words fixed and added automatically to the dictionary.  If I am missing this in a major way somehow, I apologize completely and will issue a public apology via any
social media platform of your choice.  If it really is gone, and I have to manually add the entries into a buried table 6-clicks deep, then I will issue a public excoriation of this feature on as many social platforms of my choice.
    Sincerely,
    Maximus Mednick

Auto-Correct and certain formatting tools are no longer available from the spelling error context menu.
To make Word 2013 cleaner and less cluttered, we removed AutoCorrect and certain formatting tools from the spelling error context menu. The features are still available in Word 2013 through other entry points within the Word user interface.
Less clutter in the spelling error context menu. This enables users to find popular commands more quickly. In addition, the spelling error context menu now fits better on the screen.
To change AutoCorrect options, do the following:
Choose File -> Options -> Proofing
    Choose the AutoCorrect Options button.

Microsoft used to be about allowing users to customize the OS and apps however they want. This was one reason I have always preferred Windows over Mac. There are 5 ways to do any one thing, and you can customize it to do it however you want. It's all about
user choice. Please don't go the way of Apple and force users into the way that you *think* we should do things.
    <rant>
While I whole heartedly agree with this suggestion, if you look through this blog about the design decisions that went into the 2007 ribbon:
Jensen Harris: An Office User Interface Blog -
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jensenh/archive/2008/03/12/table-of-contents.aspx
You'll see that one of the considerations of the ribbon was to ELIMINATE/REDUCE customization because it was costing large corporate customers too much time/money to support their users with 2003 customized menu/toolbars.  In other words, the ribbon
was intentionally built as a fixed design so that average user cannot change it.  The QAT was an afterthought, a sop, to allow users minimal customization.
They found that the 2007 lock down was too much of a "good thing", too much like the good old "IBM 360 green screen" (even if most people don't recognize the reference), so in 2010 they
re-introduced limited Ribbon customization within the UI.
But you still can't customize the default tabs. And to add injury to insult, if you do want to customize a default tab and go to the effort of trying to recreate the default tabs and groups
within the Ribbon UI, you'll eventually find that YOU CAN'T'! There is no way inside the UI to force the buttons to layout the same way! AHHH!
    Even in 2007,
EXPERTS have had the option of creating custom Ribbons/tabs by editing XML, but that is pretty serious programming, out of scope for 99% of users.
The "solution" to the problem was too simple. Just add an option to allow users to turn on the old menu UI.  Even if it had been buried as a registry hack, the people who really wanted it would have learned about it. Then MS could have collected statistics
on usage that would have "proved" that the menu was preferred over the ribbon.  The thing is, if the ribbon was defaulted "out of the box", over time people would eventually all switch over to it. Simply because it was the default, because MS only produced
new training material referring for the ribbon
Now, I'll concede that the ribbon really may be more "intuitive", but only for new users. For long time users the change is very jarring.
They made the same choice with Windows 8.  In the last Windows 8 consumer Preview there was a registry hack to bypass the Start Screen.  I learned about it in July or August. But MS was so sure the Start screen/metro was the only way to go they
rushed out a Windows Update to eliminate that registry entry. And it was eliminated from the RTM version.
    WHY?
Why did they remove the user's right to chose the UI that worked best for them? I don't know.
</end rant>  sorry, this is a hot button for me.

  • How can I import auto correct form old version

How can I import all my auto correct list from Pages into the new version 5, they have all been deleted

The Auto Correct function is now the System Auto Correct in System preferences.
You will need to re-create your list unfortunately.

  • Is there a way to Auto-Correct Spelling of text as I write text in Dreamweaver CS6 ?

While I write text on the html pages using Dreamweaver CS6 (Adobe Cloud downloaded version 2014), there is only an option to Spell Check the page.
But I am asking if there is a way to set preferences to auto-correct suggestions such as how Word Docs offer solutions to mis-spelled words?

    Thank you for your replies.
I am using Adobe, Creative Cloud /  Dreamweaver Software Program iMac Downloads, updated to current.
I believe there not to be the feature present in Dreamweaver on "Page View" to Spell Correct Automatically by giving word options, etc.
I know to spell check the entire page before posting the page(s) live.
I am not only writing in code view, designing HTML 5 pages, but  I am the Author and Editor of all content as well.
I can see how the coders would hate having text auto correct.
But, on the editor side, as a writer, from the page view, ... it would rock as an option.

  • Lost all my iWork 08 auto-correction data - is it still hidden somewhere?

Having spent a year or more adding my custom auto-correction list to Pages 08, I upgraded to iWork 09 and deleted 08 - only then realising that the auto-correction data didn't come across (which is a bit daft iWork Team!) Is there a way of getting it back into 09? Unfortunately I used AppDelete so the app deletion is fairly thought
    Thanks.

I was not writing about a full backup but about a backup of preferences files.
In My Preferences folder, I created a subfolder entitled: "safe_Prefs"
It contains copies of some important preferences files:
    the AppleWorks ones,
    the iWork 's ones
the charPalette one with my Favourite page.
Given that, at startup time (every morning) a script copy these prefs in the true location.
So, I always start a session with clean preferences and if for some reason I destroy an 'in use' file, I may replace it easily
Of course, I have also a copy on an other device.
I didn't understood what AppDelete does.
I thought that it was an eraser to remove entirely trashed files.
Thanks to Peggy I understood that it's a tool removing every files linked to a program.
    It's really a dangerous tool.
I hope that it doesn't remove the custom templates folder

  • How to turn auto-correction the opposit way?

The auto-correction Works the way that I as a user has to recject the suggestion from the system, if not, the suggestion will be put into mytext.  This is really anoying and completeley unlogical to me.  It should be the way that I should actively chose the suggestion, if not, my own text should be prefered.  Is there a way to turn this upside down the way that the system's suggestion only reamin as a suggestion until I actively chose it?  In case not, why not?

to do that you need to go back to Pages 4

  • What has happened to auto correction in Lens correction filter CS6?

Hi. When I try to apply lens correction in Auto Lens correction it is greyed out. Why is it not recognising my camera and lens which it does in CS5?

Thank you Peter. I appreciate your help but it is not viable. I translate huge document with amount of styles. My computer is set up in English so when I open a new document default language is English.
I mark the text I want to translate as Spanish and start out. The texts are not complicated and have a lot of repeatings. For instance all motors in a factory project may be assigned: "Explosin proof type".
I have untill recently just copy-pasted this into Edit & Replace, translated into Spanish and replaced this sentence throughout the whole document.
Know Pages is correcting what I paste into the field. It is no longer "Explosin proof type" but has changed into "Explosin proof tupe".
If it works I can translate maybe 500 positions in one document with only a few operations.
Does anyone know how to take "Spelling Auto Correction" off in the Edit & Replace part.
