Pages breaks words using "Justify text" on certain accented characters

I'm working on a document in Hungarian, and it seems that when I use the "justified text" setting, this puts extra white space around certain accented characters.

In this case, "időszak" should be a single word, and it is, when I write it as "Idõszak" (using õ instead of ő, but this is not the character that is needed there). The problem seems independent of the font that I use (Big Caslon, in the example above).
Is there a way to work around this?

My old eyes fooled me.
I saw a "lowercase o with a tilde" when it was a "lowercase o with double acute"
With your font which is a bit more recent than mine, the missing glyph is grabbed from an other font (I didn't search which one it is).
I didn't got what was in your original screenshot.
I just get a character with a fully different drawing.

Given what I get, I will not call that a bug but a feature that many users (most of them ?) are unaware of.
The operating system does its best to display the character we are asking for even if it is not built in the used font.
This trickery has PROs and CONs.
For your use, I'm afraid that CONs are the most important and that you will have to search for a font embedding the needed characters.
To scan the contents of a font, I uses the free Linotype FontExplorer which displays the defined glyphs in black and the missing ones in red so, it's easy to see if a font fit our needs.

Soft break should force justify text

Hello
Got a bit of a problem in Pages.
I'm using a 2 column text block with justified text.
I want to insert a soft break, which would supposedly force justify my text to the right.
I hit Shift+Enter and all i get is a normal paragraph break…
Any clues on how to fix this?
i've tried to export my document to Word and change it there, but even in Word it doesn't work… I'm baffled.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm curious where in the Pages documentaton it describes the behavior you are calling a bug. In my opinion, t works the way it was designed to work. You can call it a missing feature if you wish, but it doesn't look like a bug to me.

Adding page break while printing dynamic text matter

Hi!
This is a bit of a tough one ...
Im trying to print the content of a large scroll pane that
spans multiple pages. So far i have managed to get the contents
printing out, dividing the content between the pages using the
PrintJob class.
My problem now is that i want to add a header and footer
(both movie clips) on each page and want to add page break like
ms-word.

Still playing around with this, but I still can't get it to work correctly. I've selected Page 1 and tried to change the Content from Positioned to Flowed, but when I do, all my boxes are moved to the 2nd page, and the items on the 2nd page are now on the 3rd page. Can't for the life of me figure this out.
I just want my boxes to grow as you type in them, allowing them to expand to additional pages by moving existing test boxes down the page.

Why can't i write text directly in a Pages document without using a text box ?

Once upon a time, when I was running Leopard on my MB black, I was able to open a Pages document and type text directly without creating a textbox. That was a great way to take notes during a meeting or to past a long document in, without thinking how many pages it will takes.
Apparently, this is no more possible ...
Is any of you can tell me why ?
And then how can I do to have this possibility back ?

Because you have opened a Layout template.
Go back to the Template Chooser and pick a Word Processing template, they are listed in the sidebar.

Is it possible to label photos in pages docs without using a text box which is not directly 'fixed' to the photo

having imported photos from iPhoto I require to label them to make it clear as to what they represent in the text.

My two cents.
Insert the picture in the text box embedding the label.
This way you will be able to move both of them easily.
Here the text box is deliberately too large so that you see it.

Using TTS (Text to speech) What characters are illegal?

I'm using TTS to generate lots of audio files from text documents. TTS hangs up from time to time on different characters. Is there a list of illegal characters that I can try to avoid? The text is already written so I'll need to make some sort of batch process to strip and/or replace illegal characters. Here's an example of what Im typing in the terminal: say -o ~/Desktop/TTS/AudioFile.aiff This is the text to be read in the audio file.
Maybe I'm just looking for characters that are illegal in the terminal?

Yeah, excel might be putting escape codes or such in there, maybe een a printer driver & fonts if I know MS.
I don't know about excel, but from NeoOffice I can save as an .xls file as txt/csv.
I looked a an xls file in HexEdit & there is far more junk than text in it.

Web Service response from XMLA (using BW SAP) returns french Accent characters as question marks '?'

I am using .Net Framework 4 C# web service project.
I am connecting with XMLA service (using as web reference) in my C# project. The issue seems to be able to handle the French characters once i am getting response back from the XMLA execute method.
At this moment the data is coming back as '??' whenever it contains french special characters.

Pages '09 Breaking Words

Can I stop Pages breaking words and continuing them on the following line?

Inspector > Document > Document > uncheck Hyphenate
or for individual paragraphs:
Inspector > Text > More > Remove hyphenation for paragraph
…if the above is checked.

If I print a web page, either just print or save as PDF, only the first page prints well. Page 2 is offset to the right such that the information is cut off at the right edge. Information is lost at the page break, several lines of text will be lost. If I need to print a page, I open Safari, which does a very nice job of formating the page for print. But I want to use FireFox. Can you help me?

I use several add-ons for work that are only on Firefox, so using another browser doesn't help much.

Somebody had a similar problem and was advised to start in safe mode or create a new profile. (Here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/906274?s=firefox+print+first+page&r=2&e=sph&as=s). Starting in safe mode disabling all add-ons does not fix the problem for me. When I try to follow the instructions here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles) to start the profile manager, Terminal gives me an error message after I enter the line of text: "The application firefox-bin quit unexpectedly." I have tried it with and without the "-bin" (the error message is the same - just with or without the "-bin"), with a capital or lower case P at the end. Nothing works. Please help.

Trouble with ordered list & page breaks

I'm using Framemaker 10. I was using numbering and selected Numbered Next, but FM started numbering from 1, although there were previous numbers up to 4. This has never happened before. Also in the same document, FM is sometimes forcing a page break whenever I mark text as a heading. Any ideas?

The numbering issue all depends upon how the numbering is defined in the paratag and if or which series is being used. Some paragraph before your NumberedNext is in the same series and is resetting the numbering back to 0.
Again, it all depends upon the settings in the specific heading parattag that you are using. It could be set to start at the top or it could also be set to keep with next and this is causing it to roll over on to the next page.

Well, what I was concerned is AppleScript 2.0 (OS X 10.5) might not provide conventional utxt-to-TEXT (Unicode text to plain text) coercion in passing text to AppleWorks 6 and so AW6 receives UTF-16 data and yet interprets them in system's primary script (e.g. MacRoman), which should yield wrong result... (Perhaps "A" wrongly becomes 0x0041 instead of 0x41, "•" becomes 0x2022 (which is interpreted as SPACE and QUOTATION MARK in MacRoman) instead of 0xA5, etc)
As for replacing text in AW6 document using AppleScript and ignoring case, a complete test code would be like the following one. The point is to get text from text body of AW doc, coerce it to Unicode text, perform text items' dance on Unicode text, put resulting Unicode text back to text body of AW doc.
If it returns {true, 49, 49, 49} under both OS X 10.4 and 10.5, it would be OK.

List and justified text problems

I'm creating a PDF that uses justified text for all paragraphs and centered headers. One of the problems I'm having is that if the last sentance in a paragraph contains just a few words, it ends up far to spaced out. It ends up looking rediculous, in extreme cases there is a word against the left margine and one against the right margin. How do I limit the space allowed between words?
Second, how do I creat a numbered list without it indenting the left margin of the paragraph that comes after each number? I need the number to be indented, just as you would indent the first sentance of a paragraph, but the rest of the justified text needs to have the same left margin as the non-numbered paragraphs.
Third, how do I keep the space between the number and the text the same with justified text? As it is now, it changes to acount for the number of charicters in the line of text. I aso need to keep the distance for number to left margin the same, I'm just pressing the tab button twice right now. I'm not using the list function right now because of the margine issues, I'm just including the number in the text.

1. To prevent the last line of text from spacing out, make sure you use a hard return at the end of the last sentence in the paragraph. That marks it as the end of a paragraph, and Buzzword won't try to justify the last line of what it recognizes as a paragraph.
2. You can use the ruler to adjust the indents and margins for paragraphs. For more details, open up the Help documentation, click on Buzzword tips (it's under Using Buzzword on the left), then click on Editing, then select the first item -- How do I create indents. It's a little tricky, but I think that you'll find that it provides the control you're looking for. Note that when you're adjusting the formatting of list paragraphs, all paragraphs in that list that are at the same list level will have the same paragraph formatting.
3. I think that if you use the paragraph formatting (via the ruler, as noted in #2) and the list functionality, the problem of the inter-character spacing will go away.

How can I control unwanted page breaks in exported .pdf files?

I am building a form that, for a variety of reasons, must be available offline. Unfortunately, the .pdf export is introducing a page break on the 3rd page that leaves 80% of the page empty. The next element after the page break is a small text field which would easily fit on the preceding page. I have _not_ put any page breaks into this document, so the editor is following its default behavior regarding page breaks. Is there any way to tell the editor not to break at a given spot?
Also, in terms of a more general feature request, it would be very nice if there was a more intelligent method of handling pagination. I understand why (in a separate spot on the same form) the editor is pushing a large form element to the next page (since it won't fit on the previous one), but I would much rather have the option of splitting a large rating scale instrument so that the first half fills one page and the final half (with headings repeated) begins the second page. All of this empty space just looks tacky, and I can't imagine anyone actually wanting the default behavior if it would leave more than a few lines of empty space at the bottom of a page.

Well, I downloaded the trial of Acrobat XI to see if I could fix this, and lo and behold it allowed me to define the .pdf page breaks exactly as I desired! The "secret" was to switch to page view from the view menu. It also works in the online version of FormsCentral.

ALV Page Break

Dear SDN,
I found lots of posts with this title, however, after following all the instructions, my ALV does not show any page break.
Using input table IT_SORT of the ALV Function Module.
WA_SORT-FIELDNAME = 'PSPID'.
WA_SORT-SUBTOT = 'X'.
WA_SORT-GROUP = '* '.
APPEND WA_SORT TO IT_SORT.
What might be missing?
How should this page break come up?
