Pages causes iMac to shutdown

Hi. I have a very infuriating problem with my iMac randomly shutting off while typing a paper in Pages. I haven't had to type a paper for a while, but during my first paper of the semester, it shut off while on the third page. I also remember it doing this a lot before, during a previous semester. I would be writing, and without warning, it would just turn off. Its not overheating, cause I monitor the temp with SMCfancontrol. The only thing that I can find amiss in the console is a message: "Not the Finder!". I do not know what this means.
I have the older generation of the iMacs, the 20" aluminum intel-iMac. I have not had this problem while running any other software.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I don't know what "Not the Finder!" means either, but I do have a couple of things you might try.
First, try using Pages in another user account. If you don't have another account, go to System Preferences > Accounts & create one.
If that works, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & restart Pages.
It's a good idea to have a second admin account anyway, in case something happens to your main one. I have a couple of admin accounts & one "standard" account for testing & "just in case."

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Can i use iCloud for pages documents iMac?

can i use iCloud for pages documents iMac?

    Hi lmdavis72,
    It looks like you can.
From "iCloud: Documents in the Cloud overview"
You can download a document from icloud.com/iwork to your Mac or Windows computer, edit it, and then drag the revised version to icloud.com/iwork. It’s then automatically updated on all of your iOS devices. You can also drag an iWork ’09 (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers) or Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) document created on your computer to icloud.com/iwork.
So it looks like it can go between iOS devices and your iMac.

Does the search button work for OTN Forums work? Every time I get "The page caused an ESI processing exception. "

If you go to any forum's search result page down the bottom you can select any other forum. I have used this to avoid ESI bug while search the JDBC\SQLJ forum.

  • Can i download java for my ipad, the problem is i open glovis.usgs from my ipad, but i can't see the full page, cause the page need a java...help me please

Can i download java for my ipad, the problem is i open glovis.usgs from my ipad, but i can't see the full page, cause the page need a java...help me please

Nope. The iPad (and iPhone and iPod touch) cannot execute Java applets. It's a limitation in iOS from the beginning (just like lack of Flash). You will either need to use a desktop computer or access a desktop computer via RDP or VNC to access that page on iPad.mIn short: there is no native way to use a Java applet on iOS.

  • Eliminating blank pages caused by conditional text

    FM 8.0p277
    Windows 7 32-bit
My PDF file contains extra blank pages caused by hidden conditional text. All files are set to "Delete empty pages." Is there anything else I need to do?
    Thanks!
    Karen

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for responding!
The blank pages do not use custom master pages and do not have any empty carriage returns. However, because of the way the page break happens to fall, the marker for the hidden conditional text is the only thing on the blank page. If a hidden condition marker is the only thing on a page, can FM not delete the page?
Also, is there any way that FM can ignore a file in the book that is 100% conditional, and not create any pages for it in the PDF?
    Thanks,
    Karen

  • HTML5 media such as HTML5-enabled YouTube and the Ingress Intel page causes Firefox to crash my nVidia driver.

I've began to notice that HTML5 media causes strange issues with my graphics drivers. Watching HTML5 videos on YouTube or browsing the Ingress Intel page causes Firefox to lock up after a period of a few minutes, though I can still hear audio and use keybindings, I'm not able to move my mouse onto the desktop that Firefox is currently on (I use two monitors). I'm forced to reboot my PC to resolve the error.
This appears in the event viewer when the issue occurs.
"The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
    \Device\Video5
    !06d7(2640)"
I've tried resetting Firefox, reinstalling video drivers, etc. It only happens with HTML5, not Flash.

    Yep, that fixed it.

  • My Book Firewire External Causing iMac to not shutdown

I have several external devices connected to my iMac.
    1. My Book Firewire External HD
    2. My Book USB External HD
    3. USB Hub for mouse, keyboard, USB connection for M-Audio keyboard
    4. Presonus 1394 Firewire Audio Interface
My iMac does not want to shutdown all of a sudden and I have traced it down to trouble with the My Book Firewire External HD. For some reason, when I Shut Down the iMac, when it does shut down, the My Book remains running even with the iMac off. I have to unplug the My Book to turn it off. Any ideas on why the My Book is causing trouble with my iMac and why it will not dismount when I try to dismount it via Finder?

The software I was referring to is the Button Manager software which now that I look at it may not have anything to do with the auto power down nor have I even tried it. Just thought I would through out some ideas.

  • Pages on iMac

    Greetings,
I have a problem with Pages on the iMac. I work away from my office on the iPad with Pages. These doc’s sync to iCloud with no problem but Pages on the iMac cannot see them. Both are using the same apple ID as is iCloud. I cannot see why this would happen. Both the iPad and the iMac are running the latest OS from Apple . Does anyone have an idea why the Mac won’t sync with iCloud? This problem is causing a lot of problems work wise.
    Many thanks
    Mike

    Hi mikehr,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that it can be frustrating when you cannot access updated documents across all of your devices. There are some troubleshooting steps that I would recommend in this situation. Please read over the attached article and work through the steps to help isolate and resolve the situation.
iCloud: Troubleshooting Documents in the Cloud
    Updates made on your Mac
Check the iCloud system requirements and make sure that you're using the latest version of Pages, Numbers, or Keynote.
In the iCloud pane of System Preferences, confirm that you're signed in to iCloud and the Documents & Data checkbox is selected.
Confirm that the document is in your iCloud Documents Library: Open the application for the document and choose File > Open. Make sure the iCloud icon on the upper-left side is selected. If your document does not appear in the list, navigate to your document in the Finder. Drag your document from the Finder window into the Open documents window. You should see a small cloud icon and "Waiting" appear under the document icon. When the document has been uploaded to iCloud, a date appears under the icon.
    Cheers,
    Joe

  • How can I stop Firefox from recovering pages after an unexpected shutdown (for example sudden power outage)

I don't want Firefox to recover pages after a sudden power outage causes the computer to shutdown - how can I stop it?

  • Imac random shutdowns

    Imac G3 500mhz
It will power up and run fine and then will shutdown and the power light pulses slightly, can hear a slight buzz from the power supply/monitor part of the Imac, changed motherboards and downconverter and still the same problem. Possible bad power supply? Can unplug system and let it sit and then plug back in and it will start up and then shutdown again. Any help would be nice, Thanks

It is most likely (and obviously) a hardware problem. It sounds like a problem with the monitor. It sounds like the fan is faulty. This is probably the buzzing noise. And if the fan doesn't work, it will oftenly cause the computer to act strangely. The monitor is turning off from the heat that has collected in the caseing. Try to turn it on again (the way you do when you try to get it to work) and then check to see that the fan is spinning and it is spinning freely. (nothing is stuck in the fan blades, slowing it down.) Hope this helps! -TWA

  • How do i sync pages from iMac to iPad. I am new to mac and this is confusing

how do I sync between IMAC and IPAD. I just downloaded pages into my IMAC and I can not figure out how to download it onto my ipad2. I do not want to download the product again for $10. i was told that this is handled in itunes but i can not figure it out

You got some bad information if you think that you do not have to buy Pages for the iPad and you think that it will work without it.
You have to purchase Pages for the iPad as well as for the Mac. You cannot install any computer program on an iPad - Mac or Windows applications will not work on the iPad. You will have to download and install the iPad Pages app or you cant sync files from the Mac to the iPad and the other way around.

  • Transferring "Pages" from iMac to iPad

I downloaded Pages to my iMac, can I transfer and use it on my iPad or do I need to purchase it for the iPad too?

Thank you all for replying.  I read the terms and sure enough, I will have to purchase it for the ipad as well.

I have a new to me MacBook and wish to have just pages to create documents.  I have already purchased Pages for my iMac.
    Any suggestions?

The App Store version of iWork ‘09 programs will only work with 10.7 or 10.8. You can get the Work ’09 DVD which will run on 10.6  on eBay fairly cheap. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p4684.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=iwork+%270 9&_sacat=0&_from=R40
