Pages Document won't open

Hello, in need of desperate help. Im having trouble opening a pages document I saved. It's coming up with the following error 'document could not be handled because Pages cannot open files in the “data” format. Is there any way to fix this? thank you in advance

Hi,
I also have problem with a presumably corrupt file. My tip is to open the XML document with Safari and then copy and paste the text into a new document. That way you get rid of the whole <xxx> tags in one swoop. However, you also loose formatting and paragraphs that way.
This just happened to me:
• Pages immediaately crashes when I try to open a 200+ pages document....
• The same happens with my Backup files...
• When I try to open it with the File:Open menu, the same thing.
• When I try to drag and drop the file into a blank document, it says (among other things) that the file might be corrupted....
• When I look at the package contents, i can open and read every single file just fine!
• So what is pages doing? it doesn't even try to recover it!
Actually, «Apple», it would be very very easy to write a small script to convert this XML file into RTF or even better yet, have an option to read it back (recover) into Pages. Why don't you do this?? Really?
Thanks,
Gary

  • HT4942 pages document won't open on ipad or icloud

I have created a document in pages on my ipad.
All of a sudden after switching to another document and then trying to switch back, on my ipad which wasn't connected to the internet at the time, I could no longer open my document in Pages.
I message popped up saying document won't open.  I tried making a copy of it and the copy had the same error message when I tried to open it. I tried emailling and exporting it in the ipad Pages app but it froze up when trying to do it and didn't work.
I logged onto icloud and I see the document there but it won't open. I get a message that says "Document Can't be downloaded, please try again"
Is there any way to recover this document?  It is so frustrating because I can see what I wrote is still there in the thumbnail - but I just can't get the actual document.

  • Pages documents won't open on MacBook

I've got a number of Pages documents on iCloud, and all of a sudden, none of them can be opened from Pages (5.2.2) on my MacBook Pro. They all appear, but they either say "zero bytes" or there is just a gray line. If I select any document, the "Open" button remains gray. I CAN open all docs on my iPad, and I can also open them using the iCloud web interface. Meanwhlie, Calendar is syncing new events to all devices without problem, in all directions, so it can't be a problem with the account.
Any ideas? Very frustrating, makes me want to forget about iCloud.

I have a similar situation. I write a Pages document on my Macbook Air and save to iCloud, I can see the document on my iMac but it gives the grey bar which eventually becomes "zero bytes", I cannot open it. However, I can see, access and modify this document on my iPhone, my iPad and iCloud via Safari browser and they all sync beautifully together through iCloud. The iMac stays at "zero bytes" and just doesn't want to join in at all.
I have reinstalled Pages on both machines, I have removed Pages 09 as I thought that it might be the cause of the conflict/problem.
I am running the most recent versions of IOS & Mavericks on all machines/devices.
Any ideas what might be the problem? I've wasted way too much time on this already, I do so want iCloud to work .. . . but I am be pushed back to Dropbox. Sigh.

  • Saved pages documents won't open

I have suddenly developed an issue with my "Pages" documents that have been saved.
I am not able to open "any" of them. All but one is grayed out and will not open.
This is something that just recently, as in the last few days,  has happened.
I had several copies of my resume stored on my desk top that had been created and saved on
a laptop computer using a MS Word program. I had been using them to download to job applications on line.
They are not able to read the copies saved as a pages document.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Did you create your resumés in Pages '08?
And have you upgraded recently to OSX 10.9 Mavericks and Pages 5.2?
Because Pages 5.2 can not open Pages '08 files.
However Pages '08 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder. Open the files with that.

  • My Pages document won't open

I was working on a document when it asked me about update (I don't remember clearly what it said, but it said I could make a copy just in case). I did make a copy but, after closing and now trying to open it again, I can't open both documents. An error message saying "The required index.xml file is missing" pops up. Very alarming. What does that mean? How can I get my document to come back?

I'm not sure if this will help, but I had the same problem. My password was correct.... I was going crazy. One time I typed the password and automatically touched the space bar after the word before I hit " Done" and it worked. I'm not sure why a space is part of my password but that must have been how I set it like typing a sentence it's just automatic. Good luck!

  • Recent update OS10.5 to 10.6 to Lion. Using Pages (4.1) only some documents won't open. At Genius bar loaded new copy Pages; reloaded Lion clean install. Still won't open although will on another computer. What now?

Pages question: recent update OS10.5 to 10.6 to Lion. Using Pages (4.1) only some documents intermittently
won't open. At Genius bar loaded new copy Pages; reloaded Lion clean install. Still won't open although will on another computer. On the other Mac (running Lion), saved a copy of a document with a new name and sent it back to first computer. At first it would open, but now it as well as multiple other Pages documents won't open. What now?

    yes;
I got Pages to work now- there were two versions, one Universal, and one Intel- by moving the Universal to trash ( although I can't delete it) and moving Intel version to iWorks folder in Applications, it is now working. Doesn't explain why it didn't work though- the other MacBook pro 17 inch that could open all the Pages documents also has two copies of Pages as I see now....
I still however can't open Numbers documents on the MacBook pro 15 inch.... it is a Universal version of Numbers.

I have downloaded the latest pages update on my iPad, but my iMac still has Pages version 4.3, and I cannot find out how to update it on my desktop. When I try to send something from my iPad pages via email to be opened on my desktop in Pages, it won't open in Pages. I get a message that it can't be opened because the version is too old. I sent the document as a PDF and it worked. But I want to be able to use Pages back and forth. HOw do I update the Pages version on my desktop iMac?

The file format used by the iOS versions of the iWork apps can only be read by the new iWork apps on your Mac - i.e. Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. Those versions for the Mac require Mavericks, OS X 10.9. The "too old" error on a Mac comes if you are trying to open an iWork '08 or earlier file in the newest apps. If you do have the newest apps you can open the files from your iPad.
If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Mavericks & the newest iWork apps your best option would be to export/share the files from the iPad to a type an older version of iWork can read such as Word, text, Excel, etc.
Or contact AppleCare. They made this mess, let them fix it.

  • A Pages document will not open.  Others do, but are slow.  Need this document!

A Pages document will not open and there is a screen annoucement it will not open.  Other Pages documents do open, but are slow.  The one that will not open now was also very slow.  My last visit to the Apple store the Genius Bar said I needed a new HD.  Is this the final straw and it's time to take it in and let them replace it?  Under warrently.

Do we know what document won't open?
Do we also know what version of Pages you are talking about, on what MacBook Pro?
Something tells me you are not using Mac OSX (10.7), the only thing you have noted.
If your Mac is running slow, the usual reason is your hard drive is too full. OSX likes 10-15% free space.

  • Word documents won't open in Lion

I installed Lion and now my Word documents won't open. I tried to open them with Pages but that didn't work either. Any suggestions?

If you upgrade word the documents switch from .doc to .docx

  • Had to erase hard drive, now pages docs won't open

I had an issue with my Mac and had to erase my hard drive, and start from scratch.  I sent my essential pages documents via e-mail, and re-downloaded them, then re-downloaded pages, but now the documents won't open, with no explanation given.

JPS3, if by any reason there was a problen while uploading the file, I think there is nothing that can be done. Now, if the problem was downloading, you can try redownloading the file again and give it a try.
Any chances you have a copy on iCloud? (sometimes I hit save superfast without knowing it was save at iCloud).
Is this file created in the same version of the Pages you downloaded? or  is it older?
I know that its no good for this case, but next time I recommend you use sites like Box, Dropbox or iCloud.
Hope you can recover your files.

  • Pages file won't open

One of my pages files won't open. It has been fine, but all of a sudden a message comes up saying the file cannot be opened. There is no information as to whether it has been corrupted or not. When I try to open it in the mac-Microsoft office program it says the file is too large.
Either it is just too large at 669MB and I need to reduce the size? or perhaps it is corrupted. I can open a preview version from its folder, by going to file and 'Quick Look "file name." But I can't copy any of it from there to paste into a new file...
Could someone tell me how to reduce the file size? Or increase the memory of the Pages application? Or some other way of opening it.
And no, I haven't backed it up like a fool.
    Thanks guys

    Yvan,
Thanks for the tip on Activity Monitor, I did not know about that! I have a similar problem, and I hope you can help me. I have a MacBook with 2GB mem and early Intel Chip (see SN provided).
I am writing a book with MANY pictures. They are all .JPGs and are fairly big. I have to keep the book in a single file if I want the Table of Contents (TOC) to work (I think... TOC is quirky). The file is 165.4 MB on disk and loads in Activity Monitor as 173.5 MB. With Preview Open and Safari Open, the system memory report says Free 161MB, Wired 296 MB, Active 1.06GB, Inactive 497.4 MB, Used 1.84 GB, Swap used, 41.8 MB. Pages loads the book slowly and functions okay with major hesitations from time to time; but it does take a VERY long time to save and will freeze with a wheel of death from time to time.
The obvious answer is to divide the book; but that would defeat the TOC advantage I'm enjoying.
    Advice?

  • Page documents will not open.

Suddenly some of my page documents will not open. I get this message: You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. I have the newest version and it has been opening these documents just fine previously

Sounds like you have both Pages 5 and Pages '09 on your Mac and are alternately opening them.
When Pages 5 was installed, your iWork '09 software was moved to your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages '09 can not open Pages 5 .pages files.
Don't toss Pages '09 however as it has vastly more features and is less buggy than Pages 5.
