Pages & ePub

I recently purchased an eBook and have been trying to convert some of my personal files to the ePub format. I use Pages and the "Best Practices" template and everything works fine except when I open the same file on my Nook there are question marks (?) between paragraphs. Can anyone help me get rid of these?

  • Trying to follow the Pages/epub instructions but ...

I've read through all the relevant discussions I could find here, and while I've learned a lot (thank you) I am still having a major problem.
I'm tryingt o export a book-length Pages manuscript to the ePub format. I've had some success, but I can't seem to get the chapter titles correct. When I open the new document in iBooks on iPad, chapters aren't linking to the TOC (sometimes the first one will) and they don't reflect page break or section breaks, either.
Part of my confusuin comes from the instructions on the "E-pub Best Practices" document. Somehow if I delete the existing text as instructed, I delete the predefined styles as well. Since the Chapter Name style is precisely what I want, I always go back and delete only the first couple of pages, then paste my text in and finally delete the remainder after I'm done.
This would be simpler if I understood how to create a Chapter Name/TOC linked style on my own, but I don't. I have been changing the typography on the predetermined style to make it smaller (redefine from selection) and that seems to work fine.
Sorry to ask rookie questions, but ... well, I'm a rookie.
    Thanks for any assistance.
P.S. To Apple: I'm not a dumb guy, but the instructions on the Best Practices document simply are not clear to me.
"...delete the instructions and add your own content to the next page: Replace the existing styled paragraphs by typing or pasting in your own text..."
Does that mean delete everything on the template page? Sounds like it. But if I do I also delete some of the styles I need to make it work.
    I'm bamboozled.

Many thanks, fruhulda. I did not know that about styles.
Most of my use has been simply typing manuscripts, which are by design very plain so that designers can use the text as they wish later. Thus I haven't had any need or opportunity to explore the richer features in Pages.
I am grateful for this forum and especially for you and other talented users who willingly help the rest of us navigate.
    Thanks again.

  • Keeping audio played to play even when scrolling pages (epub)

    Hello,
I am about to produce a new epub, a fixed layout book, in which I want an audio mp3 file that can be heard in the background.
It is an audio book, the user can either read by himself, or choose to listen to the recording.
The problem is that each time the user scrolls to a new page - the audio player stops... and has to be activated again.
Is there any smart way to avoid it? Maybe setting the audio player in a header?
I have tried in a master page, but it did not work.
    Thank you!

    Thank you.
What I am actually aiming out to is to make a page with two columns, in which in one the text scrolls from page to page, and the other one is sort of a "constant vertical header" - which will stay the same in all pages. In this column I want to place the media files - which are independent and not linked to any page. Thus, the user can select on each page any media he wishes. The problem is that when the media is playing, and a page turns - the media actually "resets" - and you need to activate it again - which is very annoying.
Would you have any solution or idea for such an issue?
BTW - I use the epub fix layout method.

  • Pages ePub export - Can I use TOC for page breaks?

I want to export a Pages file to ePub. Things work *almost* perfectly, except the page breaks disappear.
I've read a few other threads, such as this one, that say that Pages uses the *first* style from the TOC to make page breaks. That doesn't work great for me, since I have multiple styles in my TOC that should all be page breaks.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3722549?start=0&tstart=0
Is there any way to force pages to use multiple styles from the TOC as page breaks, or will I have to enter them manually? Thanks.
**Edit:** I noticed that the chapters are actually occurring correctly. So I guess what I want is to force the epub to start each chapter on a new page. Is that possible?

    Fair enough.
I used the word "chapter" because that's what the epub document calls them, but section is a better word. Some headings look like this
    Test 29
    Section I - Logical Reasoning
    Test 30
    Section II - Reading Comprehsion
    Passage I - Wine
    Test 32
    Section I - Reading Comprehension
    Passage I - Wine
Sometimes the Test # should appear in the TOC ( if it's the first section from that test) and other times it shouldn't. As things stand, I had to remove the Test # from the headings where the Test # doesn't appear in the TOC. Because a new section starts from the line styled to appear in the TOC, I was getting:
    "Test 30
    <section/chapter break>
    Section II - Reading Comprehension"

  • URL Links  in Pages ePub

Can one arrange to place and use a web link in a pages document such that it will work when transferred to an ePub?
A second question how to return the reader back to the original epub afterwards

Can one arrange to place and use a web link in a pages document such that it will work when transferred to an ePub?
Any selected text in the main word processing page (i.e., excludes objects) can be turned into a hyperlink.
A second question how to return the reader back to the original epub afterwards
That would depend on the reader. For instance, with iPad iBooks, simply close the Safari app and re-open iBooks. It will automatically re-open on the page that opened the link in the Safari app.

  • Confused about cover "art" versus cover "page" (ePUB)

I'm just wrapping up the creation of my first fixed-layout book for the iPad, and treading a vicious circle in my mind over the difference between the cover art as I want my book to be represented within the iTunes Bookstore, and the cover page I see referenced in documentation, books, and sample code.  In designing my book I have images/xhtml for the front and back covers (as you'd see in a printed book), and then I have a cover page within my book that acts as "the first page" to correctly align all following pages to work as two-page spreads.  This interior cover page is intended to look different that the exterior cover page.
My confusion is in the specification of elements within the package.opf file.  Is the interior cover page for a fixed-layout book supposed to specify as the "cover" in the <spine> and <guide> elements?
I think my brain is simply freezing around concepts that are probably too simple to grok.
    Thanks!
    John

    Sort of... but not entirely.
I created two versions of my cover: one is simply a jpeg image, while the other is xhtml.  Within the package.opf file I specified the jpeg in the "cover" meta tag, and this image appears on the bookshelf when the book has been loaded into my iPad.  The xhtml version of the cover is the first item specified in the <spine> and <guide> elements so the reader can flip back to a nice full page cover  (and back cover) while reading.
Where I'm now slightly confused is how the cover dropped into iTunes Producer relates to the cover image jpeg included in the epub file.  Does this image:
Represent your book within the iBookstore?
Appear on a reader's bookshelf after the book has been purchased
For me, this distinction is very important, as my book is a fixed-layout landscape book of photography, and landscape book covers look pretty horrible on the bookshelf side-by-side with portrait books.  As such, I designed a very nice looking portrait version of my cover which acts as the cover jpeg in my epub file.  It looks good on the shelf, but once you start reading the full landscape version of the cover appears (which is what I want).
I'd also like the full landscape version to appear in the bookstore, but I don't want this to end up replacing what buyers see on their bookshelf.
Wish there was a little more clarity on how various aspects of a book directly relate to the bookstore.

  • How to fix Pages epub formatting changed in 4.3

I cannot get exported Pages documents to show "second header" formatting correctly when exported to epub.
Since I switched to using Pages because of its epub exporting this is very important to me.
I had no problems in 4.2.
    1. Now in 4.3 my "second header" shows as a first header in TOC.
    2. Now in 4.3 my "second header" shows as regular text instead of bold, centered, Helvitica, and larger point size. It defaults to the standard Times font, 14 point, left justified.
    Any solutions?
    Any workarounds?
    Any updates coming soon?
My latest book is ready to go once I get past this problem.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.

Thank you so much for your sage advice. Since I am always in the middle of important projects I will now never update my computer or even one porgram. Who knows what might happen? And so sorry for making a new post with more information, clarity, and a better focus. I am sure you are right about that too. Who would want or need more information to solve a problem? Who would want clarity or a single focus? Thanks again sweetheart.

  • How to get back to Text from an Pages ePub footnote on an iPhone!

I have noticed that there does not seem to be a way to return to a page that one has left to read a "footnote" that has been coverted to a endnote in export to ePub. It all looks great, but I can not find the way to return to the page I was reading on after I follow a footnote link from that page to the end of the document where the footnotes are cataloged... short of going back to the table of contents and then manually finding where I left off reading in the document before I clicked on the footnote number in ePub.
Any suggestion... maybe this is a fault of ePub or of iBooks reader?

I have noticed that there does not seem to be a way to return to a page that one has left to read a "footnote" that has been coverted to a endnote in export to ePub.
It depends on the software used to create the ePUB file. Some applications may not support returns, others return by pressing the "footnote number" associated with the specific "footnote" that sent you to the "Endnotes," and still others (e.g., Legend Maker), employs a separate symbol placed at the end of the "footnote" entry to return you to your sending text.

  • Tabs not moving from Pages to ePub

My Pages doc moved to ePub, and then my iPad great... except there's no tabs. Every new paragraph starts flush left.
    What went wrong?

Ahhh that's what you are after.
Yes you will need tabs, or have you tried en or em spaces? I think Pages' ePub "solution" is going to kill either as they really need hand encoding.
I can only suggest you search for explicitly ePub software:
    http://www.macupdate.com
This is starting to look much like Apple's previous html feature in Pages. Basically useless until users cottoned on, then it was removed.

  • Epub document in Marathi

Task - Create a marathi unicode document and export it to epub. The epub file should be readable on iOS and Android.
Problem - I have created an ebook using apple pages in Marathi Language. I have used marathi unicode font to do that. I have exported it in epub format. Now the porblem is the epub file is readable on Apple devices (macbook, iPhone, iPad) but not on android. Font is missing on Android.
What I have tried - I have downloaded Adobe indesign to perform the same task. It is helping me to do that, but there is a problem with some characters.
What I want -  I want to know whether pages exports the documents in epub3 format. Is that the format right so that it will be readable in android. Is there a process to embedd the font to ebook in pages, so that I don't have to worry about it for different operating systems.
    Please suggest.

I think  you would have to modify the Pages epub to embed fonts.  A google search on "pages epub embed fonts" might find some info on how to do that.
InDesign should work, but you may have to use the Devanagari font provided by Adobe instead of those provided by Apple to get proper display.  Check in the Adobe forums regarding any problems
    https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
I would have assumed that Android would normally include a Devanagari font, just like iOS does.  Is that not true?

  • Can I get spoken narration in background when pages are swiped?

    Hello:
I have a 20-illustration picturebook currently in print publication. I've reworked all imagery from original AI files, and they look great, but I've hit a stumbling block in my efforts to incorporate spoken narration, page-by-page, of the 20 couplets which comprise the text for the book. (Actually, the text is contained within each illustration), but I still need a means to integrate an audio file per page, containing the spoken words of each couplet.
Actually, I intended also to have a musical, instrumental file playable in the  background...one-time activation button on first page, hopefully, with looping.
I've looked for answers for these querries, but all I find is many others with the exact same questions...how to keep an audio widget playing continuously as one swipes through the pages... Some people seem to suspect that this deficiency must already be in development, and it's sure to appear very soon. I'd love to know one way or the other, so I don't finish this up without any sound integration only to find it becomes available in iBooks Author a week later...!
Any suggestions, web sites, models of similar books out there already...would be greatly appreciated.

Liz Castro is one of the preeminant ePub experts sharing what they know on the web.  She discussed Apple's new "Read Aloud" feature for iBooks here.  Adding Read Aloud to a Fixed Layout ePub is precisely what you are asking for.  However, it's not  an easy solution as you'll read in Liz's article.  She's published an inexpensive ($5) mini-guide to help you create this kind of ePub file.  It will help to have and know how to use Adobe inDesign but you can also use this information to hand code this kind of ePub file with a plain text editor.
Another possibility is an iOS app called "Book Creator" by Red Jumper Studio.  It creates Fixed Layout ePub files to whick you could add the Read Aloud feature with hand coding.  You'll need to learn a bit about SMIL though.  It's not that hard.
So, yes, there are solutions for what you want to do but they are not easy to implement yet.  I have hope that Apple will add Fixed Layout to Pages ePub export and possibly Read Aloud as well.  You can petition Apple for enhancements such as this using the feedback function in the Pages application: In Pages do Pages > Provide Pages Feedback.
You should have an iTunes Connect account (it's free) so that you may access Apple's documentation and example files.  Sign up here.

  • Issue with big books in ePub

Yesterday I converted my fist book from Pages format to ePub, the books has 344 pages, 3.5 Мб and I got 544 pages ePub version (standard font size, Times Roman TTF) The issue is that there is a delay in opening book that was created with Pages but that's not the case with book similar size I downloaded from the App Store. The problem gets even worse - longer delay in a page rendering, when I rotate my iPad and it has to split each page and it effectively doubles the pages number.

The whole concept behind epub is that fonts, formatting, etc. are up to the reader, not the publisher. Personally, I was kind of sorry to see apple opt for epub, but that's a whole 'nother issue.
The convention in configuring for blind paper-less exchange is that if the conversion from content information to imageable appearance cannot be trusted, it is ignored and instead a trusted conversion is applied. In other words, if the chance of a corrupt CMAP Character Map in the customer's font configuration is high, then ignore and assign a correct CMAP Character Map. This is basically what is done, just as if one were developing an ICC-enabled RIP design, and if, as was the case in the past, a large proportion of ICC profiles were misconstructed, then one ignored the embedded profiles and assigned trusted ones. For what it's worth, Heidelberg until August 2000 successfully sold ICC PRTR Printer profiling software where the Relative Colourimetric tag, to which Adobe applications default, was preconfigured to close to 400% total area coverage independently of the user interface; until August 2006 when Heidelberg sold the Linotype Library, it successfully sold character-coded Adobe Type 1 software and intelligent-font software that changes correct ISO-IEC 10646 input into incorrect public or incorrect private character information. So did Adobe. And so forth. Searching, spelling and sorting don't operate on glyph codes; searching, spelling and sorting operate on character codes.

  • Illustrations and Pages 4.0.4

I can get illustrations and even videos to appear in Pages>ePub, but when I double-tap the illustrations they are not sharp.
I've included them in Pages at "original size," which is minimum dimension 850 pixels.
Am I correct that they should be maximum 850 px in largest dimension?
I notice that, when I pinch once after double-tapping, they get sharper (though they are no longer full screen; they appear to be about 4/5s of the width).
Shouldn't they zoom to maximum viewable size at best resolution?
    Thanks

I've included them in Pages at "original size," which is minimum dimension 850 pixels... Am I correct that they should be maximum 850 px in largest dimension?... Shouldn't they zoom to maximum viewable size at best resolution?
No. Michael of ZappTek (Legend Maker) indicates the limit is 740x560 pixels for a "full page image." Anything larger or placed in a "reduced" page area will automatically be down-sampletd to 72 ppi (in the "image-#.png" file stored in the ePUB package) to fit the area you allocate. When you then double-click the ePUB illustration while reading, it is expanded to "fit within" the full display screen area which further reduces your perception of its quality.

  • EPub comic book possible?

    Hi guys,
I've been experimenting with Pages' ePub powers and wonder if there is a way to create a comic book, using my artwork. Thanks for any help.

Red Giant's Toon-It is what should do it but it's not compatible with CS5.  I know it says there is an update coming 'Summer Time' but that's been there for months and now summer is over!!!  I assume it's not going to be available unless you use CS4.  Shame - they make such good stuff.
Just noticed they have a good new denoiser.
