Pages freezes, beachball spins on startup
When I start Pages (I have installed the latest update), the template menu loads, then I get the beachball. Are there prefs somewhere I should trash?
do a search for "pages.plist" and delete that.
Pages may be having some difficulty with an internal part of it's file. Aside from the usual methods of maintenance (delete this, clear that, lick those thingies over there) I have found that sometimes it is easiest to just reinstall all of the iwork program.
Of course,since that is a bit more time consuming than most people like for a fix (I said it was easy,, not quick) You may want to create another user and then open pages. If pages works properly, then you will know it is something to do with the stuff in your userr folder.)

Freezing crashing spinning and lagging!! ^$%@
Ive been pretty happy with FCPX so far, but the last week or so its beginning to freeze, lag after 20 minutes of working just fine. Then I have to restart and t works fine for another 15-20 minutes before it lags, freezes and sometimes crashes. Freezing = beachball spinning and wont stop. So most times I have to force quit.
Even on simple task as playback. What gives?? I have created a new Admin and tried that account but that still makes no difference.... URG!!

I am using Lion lastest version and FCPX 10.1. Im on a core i7 2.3 GHZ and 8GB of ram... but if it works great for 20 minutes why would it just begin to freeze for "no reason" after that?Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and quite safe).

With Pref Manager, you can backup the Prefs first, then if trashing makes no difference, you can restore all your settings.
If you trash them and don't restore them, you will need to go over your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then you can ditch the bad prefs and restore from your (Digital Rebellion) backup.
It's worth a try.

Having the exact same issue. Also, on right click, many apps freeze/beachball and must force close. Additionally, uTorrent and Transmission are not operating correctly-uTorrent constantly beachballing and unresponsive. Right-click freezes with everything from Word to iMovie. Takes way too much time to do anything, and lots of cursor freezing, here is a sys log excerpt:

That killed the hard drive, so I got a new hard drive and had the Apple Store install Lion on it, then used Migration Assistant to bring files over. Since then I've upgraded to Mountain Lion and have been experiencing lots of beach balls, freezes, etc. They're so bad that I've had to forcibly shut down 3 times, and each time can't restart. Each time I've erased and done a clean install of Mountain Lion from a USB, then used migration assistant and time machine to bring files back. IBook G3 Freezing at Spinning Gear on Startup.
I recently bought an iBook G3 700MHz (the silver tone one) online, and the seller had Ubuntu installed on it. He described that he didn't use Mac OS X as the installers froze. I thought I could fix this.
I then swapped the hard disk from my iBook G4 (with faulty logic board, and Leopard installed on the drive), turned it on, and it wouldn't get past the Apple logo and spinning gear (the spinning gear would usually freeze at a point). Sometimes it would only get to the Apple logo on grey screen.
I then tried to install 10.1 (Puma) from CD with an Erase and Install, and it worked and booted fine.
I put my iBook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, and used my iMac G5 to install Tiger on my iBook's drive from the iMac's original DVDs with an Archive and Install without retaining user preferences. (I've done this numerous times with G3 and G4 iBooks with no problems).
The same problem - freezing at spinning gear. Sometimes the gear would keep spinning but the hard drive would stop any activity.
Now I'm stuck, wondering what on Earth is going on! This is definitely not the iBook G3 video card issue, I know the problem intimately and this is nothing to do with it. The only thing I can think of is updating the firmware somehow.
Here's what I've tried on startup:
- Zapping the PRAM
- Starting in safe mode (shift key, maybe makes the gear spin for a little longer)
- Starting in verbose mode (no difference)
- Starting in single user mode (no difference)
- Removing Airport card
- Removing battery
Other notes:
- Startup disk chooser (holding option at startup) works.
- The iBook won't boot the iMac's drive when the iMac's in Target Disk Mode.
- The iMac Hardware Test boots on the iBook, but gives says it's unsupported.
- The hard disk is not faulty, the iMac boots the iBook's hard disk without problem.

I tried to install Tiger with the retail DVD today (using the iMac's DVD drive with it in Target Disk Mode), with no luck. The iBook wouldn't boot from the DVD; it has the same effect as booting Tiger from the hard disk.
I feel I'm running out of options. I have found more reports of this problem on the web, but none seem to have been resolved. One example being http://www.macfixitforums.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/460697/Ireformatted_iBook_G4_now_Ic

Hi,
I create documents in pages Layouts with many images. I have had on-going problems with the pages freezing up and not being able to manipulate images or move around the document. Ball starts spinning and application can not keep up with commands. I have been instructed to re-install my operating system twice now by apple (which allowed pages to work for a few weeks then back to same problem). I have been on the phone countless hours with techs taking me through various hopeful fixes. Still doesn't work. I have removed pages 09, and Apple sent me new Iworks 09 software. The problem is worse. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE AS TO FIXING THIS PROBLEM?

The images I use are normally jpegs that I either copy/paste or drag into pages. the images are normally 1-2 mb in size.
Large numbers take up resources. Depending on compression method, 1-2mb could be large files. The final size needs to be 300dpi and no more.
Sometimes smaller. I usually just mask the images and I do use Alpha to take backgrounds out.
Alpha masked images will especially tax the system. Better to prepare images "deep etched" ie background removed in Photoshop or the like.
I add text boxes to the pages with limited text. Apple has said that Pages should be able to handle docs that have higher mbs and that I should not be having this issue. But I agree it has to do with the images. I am now breaking up and doing single pages but even then it is freezing up. It is odd but I find that the problems get gradually worse. I can create a page with images and manipulate it just fine and then 2 weeks later open the same page and nothing responds. Very frustrating. I am now told by apple that I need more RAM but the fact that I sent a 7 mb doc to a MACPRO user with much more power and she had the exact same issue makes me question that.
Thoughts? I am brain dead from this.

Macbook air freezes with spinning wheel
So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

Only Apple Logo and beachball spinning after restarted
After force shut down. I try to restart my Macbook Air (OS X10.6) , it only appeared Apple logo and beachball spinning. It was spinning over 30 mins....
What can I do?Try booting in Safe Mode (hold Shift key down when booting) and/or run fsck.
Run fsck.
1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
/sbin/fsck -fy
3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.

Before I start, thanks to everybody here - this forum is very helpful. Have found many answers.
However, no I am stucked. I have found other topics talking about it but none helped. So that is the story:
Pages freezes the whole iMac Core Duo. Nothing works anymore - not even the keyboard combination of force quit. This is very frustrating and it happens a lot. Unfortunately can I not figure out when and why, seems to be totally random. There is no crash log or at least I can not find it using console

icon in the dock
After that, the system becomes completely unresponsive; switching between
open applications works, but finder functions are unavailable (the dock
doesn't work, menus are inaccessible, force quit key command does not
respond).
You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Eventually, you are left with a spinning cursor and must shut down the
machine using the power button.
These symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS
X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS
X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
The Quick Fix
If you find yourself in this situation, the quick fix that has worked for me
has been to disconnect the ethernet cable from the system for about five to
ten seconds and then plug it back in. You may also have luck turning off the
hub, router or access point for five to ten seconds and then turning it back
on. This forces the system to kill and restart lookupd, thereby freeing up
Mac OS X, until the next time it hangs...
If you're accessing the net at all (which, if you're on broadband, your mac is doing most of the time), lookupd will eventually hang, freezing the OS.

Actually, what needs to be accessed depends a lot on the context. For instance, an open dialog in an app that can only open certain kinds of files must check file extensions or other file metadata before it can show which items it can open. If in Finder windows or open or save dialogs you are in a view that shows an open subfolder hierarchy (essentially anything besides icon view), the items may need to be accessed to fetch metadata about them before they can be displayed. Even in Finder icon view, view settings to show icon previews or item info may require access. At the least, the permissions must be checked before anything can be accessed.
Much of this is cached temporarily, so that recently accessed folders don't need to be accessed each time you return to them, but the info is discarded after a while to prevent it hogging large amounts of memory.
IOW, even though you don't think of it as such, you are often accessing a lot of stored metadata info just by opening a Finder window or open or save dialog. You can minimize this by avoiding contexts that display it, like by closing folders in hierarchal views before accessing them again & choosing the minimum view options for Finder windows, but you will probably find this tedious, limiting, & a much more primitive way to use your Mac. -
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?

The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. when i first open firefox homepage (opens with google as set by firefox) after about 3 seconds the page freezes and cannot be closed or minimised. i have to open second homepage to shut pc down or continue to use pc. this has only happened since i installed firefox 4. what do i do to fix this
I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6. -

When quickly scrolling through documents with more than a few pages, Pages simply freezes up. Scrolling halts and menu items become unresponsive. The only way to bring Pages back to life is to click on the desktop or another application's window and then click on the Pages window. This is extremely annoying.
However, this only seems to happen when another user is logged on via Fast User Switching.
This problem does not happen with Open Office, Neo Office or Text Edit when editing the very same documents.
Is Pages somehow not compatible with Fast User Switching?I should add that when Pages freezes the system.log contains items like this:

Computer STILL freezing and spinning ball after mountain lion update
I have an early 2011 Macbook and like many others I am STILL experiencing the sporadic freezing and spinning beach ball of death/ pull my hair out / F*in up my life MULTIPLE times a day for hours on in!!!
I've erased all caché, reinstalled OS X Moutain Lion and conducted a reset of some sort by using Command + Option + P + R (I got this tip from another thread I randomly found). The reset works only for a short period of time, then I'm back at square one.
I love the update but its really starting to impact my life in a major way.
If someone could PLEEEEEEEASE advise a permantent fix to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, please tell me how to uninstall this OS completely!!It is time for ALL of the new MBP machines to be replaced that are having the same issues. There is no reason that the new ones should be experiencing this issue. NONE of the Apple applications allow any work to occur since the update to 10.8.2 - something has destroyed the memory - it does not matter which Apple application I use, the memory is reduced to < 10 MB though it should be 8 GB. Not going to fight any battle. Apple must do the right thing as these steps are a joke designed to take my time. Replace the machine. If that doesn't work, replace again. If that doesn't work, repeat. -
Mac freezes on the apple startup screen?
My iMac 24 inch freezes on the apple startup screen, then it takes along time for the cog wheel to start turning, and then that's all you'll get untill you switch off. I've fixed permissions and erased and reinstalled but still same issues, any ideas for what to do next????
If you can afford to erase everything again...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.
Or...
Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.
