Pages from OSX Server - Slow and impossible

Is anyone using Pages 08 in an office setting with OSX Tiger Server? We are an office with only 5 users and trying to migrate from AppleWorks to Pages '08. The speed at which Pages '08 saves and opens files from our server is terrible... documents take 4 to 5 times longer to open and to save a doc that it does with AppleWorks.
Is this typical? The speed is so slow that my staff is now suggesting we move to Word or some other WP. With AWs no longer supported, we need to a new WP. Pages '08 is all that we need but the slow performance with a server makes this app a lesser choice.

Mac Mini OSX Server Version and installation

I am very interested in the New Mac Mini with OSX server configuration.
But I would like to know what is the difference between the "Retail" OSX server version and the "Bundled" OSX server version which came with the Mac Mini ?
Can the "Bundled" server version be installed on another intel-based Mac ( in case of hardware failure in the Mac Mini ) ?

The difference is that this is server software, it is not the Mac OS X client software for day-to-day use on a Pro or Consumer Mac.
The bundled software according to the Mac mini Server specs page is on an Install/Restore DVD. These are usually machine specific so it will not be usable by directly placing it in the ODD of another Mac, it should spit the disc out as unusable. But there are ways to connect the Macs and install the software to another Mac. However, the End User Agreement licenses the software for installation on only one Mac at a time.

Downgrade from OSX Server to NON_SERVER

Hi, upon recommendation of an Apple employee friend I bought the OSX server 2 years ago. I would like to downgrade to the non-server version. I currently run OS X 10.4.11 Server. I would like to be running the non-server OS. I have a 10.5 upgrade/install disk that I will use when I have a non-server OS to upgrade (but currently the upgrade will not allow me to upgrade from osx-server).
In the past 2 years I have added tons of software and configuration. To rebuild my machine from scratch may take a week and I still wont have all the settings I currently use and need. So I want to avoid a fresh install of the non-server OS.
Is there a way to do this? Whether following apple rules or perhaps just tweaking a file somewhere that makes the OS think its non-server? I am very comfortable editing files and using bash etc.
I would like to trick the OS into thinking it is non-server so that I can use my Leapord install disk to upgrade me to 10.5 non-server.
Any ideas here? Before I rebuild my entire system from scratch?

That would likely work, but the OP wants to retain all his customization, and some of that will be in the (admin) user sandbox.
OP: what have you tried? Have you:
Bought a spare decent Firewire external drive (like a seagate), clone your existing OSXS install to it with carbon copy cloner or superduper, then experimented on the clone (like, try to upgrade it with the 10.5 installer, or try Antonio's suggestion but keep the user settings)? That's where I would start. You can reclone over and over again until you find a formula that works -- or exhaust all possibilities -- without risking your existing install.
And report back here with your results -- it may save someone else someday.

No. You need to buy it for your Apple ID and for the other. You will have problems with updates

How to customize an existing OAF page from Oracle, change it and reload it

Hello all Oracle Developers,
I am having a question regarding to customization, basically I am going to follow a very simple example.
We have form: APXVDMVD and OAF web Page AP_APXVDMVD.
Applying all our custom code via forms personnalisation is piece of cake. However trying to apply the same code to OAF web Page AP_APXVDMVD
is a total back box for us.
The basic example seems like this: Suppose that in the Suppliers/Vendors Page we type the supplier name and then right after that we populate in consequence all the fields:
Taxpayer ID, Tax Registration Number, DUNS Number
We want to grab the OAF Web page from oracle apply the custom code in java code or whatever necessary to make it work and deploy it onto the server.
Is this achievable, if so how we can do it??? Can we grab the web page extend the classes that are necessary and deploy the solution. The demo provided from Oracle
is showing how to create pages from zero, however Oracle have not provided how to grab an existing applications page, put the code and the deploy it
Let me know any inputs, whatever you did and surely we will be sharing the same stuff all migration R12 long :-)

You can extend OA framework pages and customize them. There is also a section for customizations in the OA Framework Developer's guide. IF this requires extensive customizations, Iwould advice to be very careful as any extensions should not interfere with the base logic of the pages. Please post here if you need more details.

As you wrote that you have tested on local system .. now try on portal and let me know that its working or not.
Suppose if rendering of page taking time then try to use ajax or some java script function to embed the page
which leads to quick load.

OSX Server Edition and Samba

I am new to the Apple world and have been slowing converting to OSX. I have a quick question that I hope makes sense. I have a mixed environment of approximately 10 Macs and 5 PCs. I'm using a Mac Pro as a server, but it's running OSX, not server edition. Does the OSX server edition give us more control over shared access than ordinary OSX - in particular, there's an issue with Samba that requires anyone using a PC who wants to access a disk shared by a Mac to have an account on that Mac, and the logins seem to have some problems on the Windows side. (For instance, it fails if the disk is already connected, without telling you why -- it just re-presents the login dialog.)Can you give me any advice as to why?

OS X Server is intended for uses in which you are running a server with 10 or more clients. It is not a replacement for the Client version connecting to a Windows server nor facilitating simple sharing between a Mac and a PC in a home environment. Furthermore it's far more costly than the client version.
For a specific networking issue post a detailed description of your problem, what your physical network setup is, alternative solutions you may have tried but which did not solve the problem in the Networking forum.

OSX-Server, iCal and Z10

Hello everybody,
i have a problem with syncing my iCal to my Z10 and I hope that there is a solution.
Im hosting my own OSX-Server 10.6 and on it there is the iCal-Servis witch runs perfectly with all Devices exept the Z10.
I inserted the login informations in the calendar setup and checked them multiple times but no succsess. In the Server logs there is only the massage that the login credentials aren´t correct. Is there a problem with the encryption of those?

It's a known issue that the VPN client will not connect if it has a static address on the local network. You must get an address from DHCP. Maybe "DHCP with manual address" will work, but I don't know for sure.

Download issues from OSX Server...

Hello,
I have an odd issue occurring with our OSX Server (XServe RAID)... We have a directory setup as a LAMP Web Server (Apache2/PHP4). Everything works great except for one thing: downloads.
When I attempt to view or download any file (whether it be graphics in an HTML doc or files access directly by URL), it will only allow my to view/download a small portion of the file (anywhere from 64k to 500k).
The first place I looked was my php.ini file. This was because this problem first manifested from a PHP app I am using. Everything is set correctly in the ini file, though (I can upload files of any size -- depending on the ini settings, etc.).
Shortly after, I realized that this issue occurs even when trying to access a file directly by entering the URL to the file (i.e., it's not a PHP issue). So, I checked my httpd.conf file and found that nothing was odd there either.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there somewhere else I can check for a "download" setting?
Keep in mind that I'm not a LAMP expert (nor ISX server). I just need to get this working so that people can view more than just half of a webpage!

It's putting out that message because the apachectl that you're running isn't the one that you think that you're running. I'd estimate that you have 3 Apache setups on that box. The Apache 1.3.x, which is centered around /usr and /etc. The default Apache 2.0.x install in /opt/apache2 and an Apache 2.0.x install that you have based in /Library/Apache2.
When you execute a command, if the command doesn't start with "/" to specify an absolute path the shell will try appending the command to each of the directories in you PATH variable until it either finds the command, or runs out of possible paths (which is when it will give a "Command not found" error). So if you type in:
apachectl status
it will find the apachectl program in /usr/sbin instead of the /Library/Apache2/bin/apachectl that you want. You'll either need to modify you PATH variable or use absolute paths with the commands to keep these versions straight.
AFAIK, ServerAdmin will only work on the default install (the 1.3.x version). For any of the Apache2 setups, you'll be coniguring by hand, probably in /Library/Apache2/conf/httpd.conf.
FWIW, I was running the /opt/apache2 daemons for a while and they started hanging and crashing. I never did figure out a reason, and had to keep the sites running, so I went back to the 1.3.x httpd.
