Pages hangs on opening any word processing template

Have re-created the problem consistently.
Deleted plists for pages and iwork from root level and user library preferences, deleted and re-installed the application a number of times. Any page layout template will open, but attempting to open any of the word processing templates causes the beachball to appear and I have to force quit pages. This, after having used the program quite extensively.

Who told you to
Deleted plists for pages and iwork from root level
They have no effect on the way the program behaves.
At this time, I have no idea about what may cause the described behavior for Word Processor documents.

  • Pages hangs on attempting to load word processing templates

Anyone have any idea why Pages should hang whenever I try to load most word processing templates. Blank, Outlines and Miscellaneous all load fine, as do all the page layout templates. Letters, Envelopes, Forms and Resumes all just hang Pages. I have tried leaving the program for 30 minutes but no change and eventually have to Force Quit and start again.
I see there was a reference to this issue in 2008 with no apparent resolution but I am also assuming that was Pages '08?
I have updated to the version 4.0.3 (766) as well as reloading the whole of iWorks several times.
    Very frustrating!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Perhaps a font issue? You may have duplicates or not used the Mac OS 10.6.3 combo update.
There is also a possibility of corrupt Pages preferences (this is not fixed with reinstallation). Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist, empty the Trash & then restart Pages.

I recently updated to the OSX 10.8.3 Operating Sistem.  I am writing a book and now cannot open any word document I've created with the old system.  Could not find a newer version of the Microsoft Word Processing Program.  Is Pages the next thing? Can I recover my documents?  How?

I'm in the same boat: new to OS X and Mac, and in the middle of a book. I switched because I heard about the the ease of using Mac, but so far, for me, it's been a nightmare. I bought 2011 Office Mac and hate everything about it, the most recent being the inability to open or cut or paste any of my original word files. I understand that this could have easily been done with earlier versions, but not Mountain Lion (which I learned is what OSX is.) Since I work with language, I am amazed at the assumptions of the Apple community. It helps to use common language and explain even the basics.
So all the helpful hints to use the latest version of Office Mac are to no avail. Now what?

I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

    Pages '09
ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
When to use ePub or PDF
Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.

    More details on using PDF
Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.

Pages will not open any of my word documents.  The I works documentation states that it will open them.  I have tries using the open under the file menu and I have tried dragginh the file to the pages 09 icon.  Either way I get the following Message "The document “*****.docx” couldn’t be opened. What do I need to do to open them?

hello, the most likely cause is a firewall/security program preventing firefox from accessing the internet. see [[Firewalls]] for information on how to configure them correctly.
also make sure that firefox is set to directly connect to the internet in firefox > options > advanced > network > connection - settings... in there "no proxy" should be selected for normal use cases.

  • Office Open XML word processing document

I am getting the following message when I try to open a Word (docx) Document on my iPhone 6 running iOS 8 (latest build at 08/10/14) from within an email account:
"Office Open XML word processing document"
I have tried installing Microsoft Office Mobile and a third part App called Documents.
I have been sent different emails in DocX format (.docx) and I can not open any of them.
I have tried pages on my iPhone and that does not work eaither.
I can however open PDF documents.
I have rebooted/restarted the iPhone twice.
I have a coleage with an iPhone 5 with iOS 8 and they have the same problem.
I have another coleage who has an iPhone 4 on an older version of iOS and theirs works fine.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Anthony

I have had this problem for a while now. The only thing that worked is:
    On your iOS Device:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings
Once it restores, connect to iTunes
do not Restore from Back Up (this doesn't work) - instead select Set up as New Device
This resolved the problem opening all mail attachments (PDF, .docx, .doc, .pptx, .ppt, .xlsx, etc.)
    Good luck.

My Macbook pro came with snow leopard. I decided to upgrade to lion so I could use cloud. Now I can't open any word doc. that I receive in emails. Is there any way to remedy this?

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.

Pages crashes when opening any document on iPad 3 Latest version. I tried everything I could find on the net and finally deleted Pages from my device and reinstalled it. Still when I try to create a new document or open a document it just crashes out.

    Try this:
Make sure IOS is updated to latest version
Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

Did I miss something in the fine print? I installed Lion and and come to find out, I can no longer open any Word documents or Excel spreadsheets as they are no longer supported (apparently because they are PowerPC apps).  Seriously?!?!?!?!!   What are my alternatives?

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • The application "Microsoft Word" can't be opened-600. I cannot open any word document anymore. do not know what to do...please help

The application “Microsoft Word” can’t be opened-600. I cannot open any word document anymore.  Every time this message appears. I went to apllications and open a new document but my word icon cannot open. Please help

Word can't open or does it open but you can't open documentts?
If you have Office does Excell or Power Point open? If they do you can perhaps check for updates with either of them: Help > Check for Updates. You can also try to reinstall Office with your installation disks. Don't delete Office, just try to install it again.

  • How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?

Being a relatively new Mac User, I haven't yet figured out how to associate programs with particular file types.
How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?
    Thanks.

    Hello Argelius
If you select a word file in the Finder and do File>Get Info you will see a section in there where you can specify which application should be used to open files of that type.

  • Templates opening at 'word processing' format instead of 'page layout'

I have many templates created before upgrading to iwork-8. When I use them in the latest version they automatically open as a 'word processing' format. But I need them to be in page layout format. Any suggestions?

    Not,
Before Pages 3, there was no page layout template -- there was only word processing. So Pages open up any document (prior to Pages 3) as a word processing doc. You can't change it. You can only copy the material to a new template.
But I have to ask -- what do you want to do that can't get done in a word processing doc?

  • Opening appleworks word processing docs

So I am in the process of converting my 40,000 appleworks documents so they will open in Pages. I am converting all the word processing docs to appleworks 6.2.9. My question is: Is this enough? Will these documents now be safe or is there another step I have to take? I have converted my data bases to fileworks and just want to be sure that, down the road, I won't have a problem once all the AW WP docs are saved as AW6. I've been doing about 100 at a time. I open them all in AW6 and then quit AW and save them as AW6 docs and (I just hold down the return key) trash the AW pre-6 and Clarisworks docs after saving them as AW6 docs. Now they open in Pages. I'm just worried that the next system upgrade might screw me up again. I've been avoiding upgrading from 10.6.8 until I'm sure I won't lose these docs.

You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents.
There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock.
If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.

  • Pages won't open ANY file, old or new

Pages '09 won't open previously saved documents (.pages or .doc), or open a new document from template. When attempting to open a previously saved document, I get the error message "The document "document-name.pages" couldn't be opened." Pages, as a program, however, stays open. When attempting to open a new document from a template, the progress indicator simply spins forever and does not open a document.
Keynote and Numbers work just fine, both being able to open old and new documents.
When opening an old document, Pages creates these Console messages:
    5/25/09 7:10:01 PM Pages[211] Assertion failure: Method: markerOfType:forRulerView:atLocation:listLevelActive:
    Object: <SFWPRulerMarker 0x2d10800>

5/25/09 7:10:01 PM Pages[211] Failed to open document, but no unrecoverable error
I have tried deleting user, system, and font caches, deleting iWork preference files, and reinstalling iWork, but none of this has worked.

Well I finally got it to work. I uninstalled and AppTrap grabbed a few preference files that belonged to Pages and I allowed it to delete them all. I rebooted and installed iWork again, but I got the same issue, again. I was attempting to select a blank document style from the Template Chooser, but it wouldn't open any, just spinning the wheel in the template preview in the Template Chooser window. I went into preferences and told it to create new files using the Blank template, and that worked. However, it wouldn't let me use the Template Chooser to open a new document.
I saved the new document, created from the Blank template in Template Chooser, to the desktop. I double-clicked on this document and it said it couldn't be opened? However, I could open it from inside Pages, just not by opening the document and having it use the default application (Pages) to open it with.
Lots of odd stuff going on here. I came to the idea that something residual was sitting on my HD, and decided to try a better cleaning. I opened Clean My Mac and dropped Pages on the Applications window. Clean My Mac did a scan and identified a ton of items pertaining to uninstalling Pages, nearly 900MB of misc documents, caches, and other stuff. At this point I wasn't too worried about deleting the wrong thing, as I am nearly ready to wipe and reinstall, whatever it takes to straighten it out.
After removing everything, I did a reboot just to be safe. Then in reinstalled iWork 09, and attempted to open documents using Template Chooser. SUCCESS! However, I remembered that it worked just fine until I applied the 9.0.2 update to iWork, so I was cautiously doubtful that I would be able to work this time once I applied the update. Well, it seems CleanMyMac pulled something off that was complicating things, possibly from the old iWork '08 version, or the Trial Version? I'm not really sure.
Anyhow, thanks for the help and suggestions. I've got a bunch of errors showing-up in the Console, and slowly, little-by-little, I'm working on trying to research and solve them all. I wish I could find a good source for referencing all of the errors that are showing-up, as this seems like it'll take a long time.
    Thanks again!
    Pete
