Pages in iCloud cannot edit a converted MS Word to Pages file

For our monitoring program we use some MS Word documents converted to Pages. Using the local Pages app these converted to Pages file works perfectly on our Mac. Life is good.
What we cannot do is edit with the Safari iCloud Pages. It appears these forms were created using MS Word Tables. Yes it opens, but the body of the form is a table, wherein the entire table border is highlighted in blue thus we cannot edit the table as we can using the local Pages.
Other than recreating this and other forms is there something we can do? We want others to be able to fill in these forms from within iCloud Pages in their browser.
MBP, Mavericks.

The following is from an older post:
You can do this from icloud.com  (using a web browser on a Mac or PC). iCloud.com will give you the choice to download a Pages document as a Pages, PDF or Word document.
Please read Apple's Support document titled iCloud: Get documents stored on icloud.com.
HOWEVER, while I can download a word file on icloud as a word file, one of my Pages files can only come back as a Pages file.  Perhaps the advice above is no longer appropriate given the changes on iCloud.

Turned on Mac mini and cannot get rid of the word definition page and get to my home page. What is the problem?

    Is this a screensaver?
    Whatever
Push the power button and hold it until the mini shuts down, then start it again.

I am having the same problem I think.  With mobileme you simply copy documents to the idisk folder and then synch.  I cannot seem to sink that folder anymore.  Any idea as to how I can simply copy folders to icloud and then access the MS Word and PDF files on my iphone?

Apple never bopthered to explain that this would happen
Your iDisk is still accessible after moving to iCloud in exactly the same way as before. Nothing is deleted until June 30th 2012.
, so I could easily have lost ALL of the files I kept on iDisk.
No, you couldn't. Firstly, nothing was deleted from your iDisk. Secondly, any files stored on your iDisk should never be your only copy. Even if your iDisk spontaneously combusted, you should keep local backups elsewhere.
Does Apple WANT people to move their storage elsewhere and stop paying Apple for it?
Yes. Apple doesn't provide such a service anymore, nor are you paying them for it.
Apple has made no effort to suggest remedies for the problem it has given iDisk users
They've provided instructions on how to download your files from your iDisk. What you do with them after that is your choice.

  • Can you convert MS word to pages?

Can you convert MS word to pages?

I see you just list an iPad, but you've posted in the Pages for Mac forum, so I'm going to assume you are asking about Pages on a Mac. Pages can open most Word documents (probably Word 97 or later). The conversion most likely won't be perfect, so be prepared for some differences.

How can I keep the formatting when converting from Word to pages?

Use only formatting that is supported (in the same manner) in both applications. You'll need to find which that is through trial and error. Beyond those formatting options, you'll need to do some corrections, as Fruhulda suggests.

  • Page/chapter numbering probs in material converted from Word

Situation: Need to convert ~300 pages (multiple files) of Word into structured Frame. I'm not very familiar with structured Frame (but am working on this), and am a long-time user of nonstructured. Moving Word 2007 files into Frame9 (in TCS2).
Problem: Chapter/page numbering. No matter what I try, including copies of a file that demonstrably works, one copy does not accept the "Continued" settings for page numbering. It resets the TOC to page 1. Copies of that file added to the TOC also reliably reset page numbering to 1. When I go in to see what's going on I find that the Numbering dialog for each problem file shows it mysteriously reset to start page numbering at 1. (These copies are nearly identical, differing only in a numeral in one heading to remind me what chapter each is file supposed to be.)
Further, when I added an autonumbered ChapterTitle paragraph at the top of each file to test chapter numbering, the page numbering problem resolved itself (!) but the chapters don't increment as expected. Numbering string: "C:Chapter <n=1>" for Chpt1 and "C:Chapter <n+>" for the rest of them.
Test setup: Saw this in production files and stepped back to use a simple Word source file as a test. Constructed several Normal paragraphs, a bulleted list, and a numbered list, and two heading levels (Heading1, Heading2) in this file. Saved; closed. Opened the file in Frame (Structured). Created several nearly identical copies and added all to a book file. Added a TOC to the book. Set the numbering: Chpt1 starts Chapter and Page at 1 and all others are set to "Continued" in both categories.
Added the ChapterTitle paragraph to each file after conversion.
In one experiment I applied several of the "target" Frame paragraph formats. Target formats were supplied by writer who works primarily in a  structured Frame setup that is similar to the one planned for the  converted material. In one file all paragraphs were set to their Frame equivalents. In others there was a mix of original (as brought over from Word) and Frame formats. Made no apparent difference.
Questions: Is this something about structured vs. unstructured? About  structured Frame WRT conversion from Word? Either way, has anyone else  seen (more to the point, *resolved*) similar?
Thanks in advance for any insight!
    Anne

    OK--
WRT "<$chapnum>": check, thanks for the reminder. (Yes, I agree that chapter/page numbering tabs are different items.) :-)
To clarify: yes, the idea is a Word > Frame conversion. The process stumbled upon so far starts with opening Word files in unstructured Frame. (I'd never done it, either---never had a need to try. Somebody new to Frame asked if it was possible, so we experimented and voila!) I have recommended dropping files into .mif and then resaving as .fm in order to lose any artifactual Word stuff.
Step 2 is applying appropriate Frame paragraph styles from a supplied list, and creating book files. (The page numbering issue resolved once I added a ChapterHead paragraph.  Using the <$chapnum> tag handles the remaining chapter number  issue.)
In theory Step 3 will be the move into handling the fully-converted material as structured Frame documents. The key point, though, appears to be the conversion table. I get this from a WritersUSA article by Alan Houser at http://www.writersua.com/articles/frame/index.html:
FrameMaker provides a mechanism called a conversion table to automate  much of the task of legacy document conversion. The conversion table  maps unstructured FrameMaker paragraph and character formats to  elements, and allows you to automatically nest groups of elements. If  your legacy documents were created using a style-based authoring tool  (typically FrameMaker or Word [!]) and your authors have used those styles  consistently, you may be able to automate 80%-90% of the conversion  process. If your legacy documents include a significant amount of manual  or ad-hoc formatting, the conversion will be substantially more  tedious.
Looks like my group will have to create this.
Thanks, all, for the help. :-)

  • In Pages, what do you do when converting to Word and get "unknown error occurred" How can you fix the conversion?

Can anybody help me. In Pages how can I deal with "unknown error occurred" when converting to Word?

Thanks for you suggestion roaminggnome. I tried typing in 13019 like you said and it gave me a few options to try and fix it but none of them worked (of course). I fiddled around with it for a while some more on my own and some how got it to work again, lol. Thanks again though for offering a solution.

  • Cannot edit pdf text in word 2013

I have just opened a PDF document on Word 2013. However the entire document is showing up as a picture and I am unable to edit the text.
please tell me how i can edit the pdf file using word 2013 as I believe we can. maybe i need to change the way the document is scanned.
    please advise.
    philip

PDFs produced by scanning processes and the like often have no text in them or, if they've been made searchable, have both the scanned pages and the text behind them. The text in such cases is typically produced by an OCR process and may not be entirely
    accurate. If the PDF isn't searchable, then all you have is page images. When such PDFs are opened in Word, that's also all you'll get. If a scanned PDF is searchable, the opened file in Word will have the same structure - images overlaying the OCR'd text;
in that case, deleting the images will reveal the text behind them.

  • Tables converted from word to pages

Students send me tables that have been created in word. When I open them in iWork, I lose any section of the table longer than a page. What can I do?

Open them in Word instead of Pages. Unfortunately the display of Word documents in Pages isn't perfect, and some formatting doesn't survive the translation.
It pains me to say this, because I refuse to use Word myself and I sympathize with anyone else who does. But in your position, there's just no choice. You have to accept that Word is the standard, bloated and clunky as it is.

  • Why does Apple downgrade Pages... they want us to use Word Instead Pages?

I'm really frustated about new Apple Pages 5.0. Many many many features are not there anymore.  Why this update? Jobs... we miss you!!! I can't believe I will have to use MICROSOFT WORD!

It seems that Apple is locked in to a cycle of continuous 'improvements', for the sake of making headlines, which in reality turn out to be just doing something differently rather than improving things. As with most people in this forum I agree that iWork '11 is a catastrophe of a 'productivity' suite. iWork '09 was -- is -- excellent and never at any time did I wonder if Apple could remove some of the respective applications' really useful features
Pages 5 might look a bit slicker, but it is far less functional than 4.3. As for Numbers (and I know we're on Pages, here) the same issues applied, although there have been some retro-fixes by Apple that added back in some essential features that were lost in the 'upgrade'.
I shall now be much slower to upgrade any Apple software in the future and hope that the next revision of Pages, Numbers and Keynote offer genuine improvements.

  • Cannot Edit Pages

    Hello All,
I'm new to DW so please keep that in mind. I have a site
that I need to tweak and have been able to edit most pages in that
site. However there are a group of pages that I cannot edit in any
mode.(Design or Code) Each of these pages displays in yellow at the
top right of the window "Template:internal" I'm not sure what that
means. I have looked at much of the code but have found no obvious
differences between the pages I can edit and those that I cannot.
Could someone help me understand what is going on here?
    Thanks, Jeff

    > Is DW as bad as FP?
Without a comfort level in HTML and CSS, anything will be
    trouble for you.
On the other hand, if you are not put off by looking at code,
    then DW's
templates are quite simple to understand and adapt to.
    > The site is quite large and has a few sub webs.
DW will not play well with sub webs. Each sub web must be
    treated as an
independent site in DW with its own site definition and local
    site (although
you could nest your local sites in DW).

Does your site's usage require a testing server? By that, I
    mean to ask -
are you using server scripting? If not, then you do not need
    a testing
    server.

  • It doesn't save as word but as picture I cannot edit. Why?

I read forum and followed the step by step instruction. But Adobe still doesn't alow me to save my pdf file as a word document. It saves my pdf file as picture, that I cannot edit. What is wrong? My file is 146 kb. Vanda

    Hi vanda123456,
May i know which application of Adobe including with application version you are using to convert the PDF document to word document.
Also let me know the work flow that you are using to convert the document.

  • Renaming new files in pages for iCloud

When I create a new blank file in Pages for iCloud beta the file is named blank. There is no obvious way to rename it. If I close the document and then try to restart Pages for iCloud I get an error message stating that pages can't be loaded.
This seems fundamental so I presume it is addressed somewhere.

That is what I thought would be the way to do it. However it seemed the only way to see the file selector window was to close the file I was working on and and then hit the pages for iCloud icon again to get the file select window. However, pages refused to reload. I was left with checking the iCloud files on the Mac. I changed the file name there. It sees to me the online and iOS versions of the program should allow for naming of the file from within the files editing window just as can be done on the mac version.
Thanks for the follow up. I guess I just need to figure out why pages for iCloud wouldn't relaod. I suspect it needs to be closed first and that must involve more than closing a window. That begs the question of how the web based program is closed.
