Pages keeps reopening old documents in Mavericks

This has been happening for about a month now and is starting to really get on my nerves. Documents that I was working on months ago keep opening up in Pages when the application is first launched.
I have already cleared my preferences and my saved application states, but nothing seems to work. I have also tried as a last ditch desperate attempt to clear recent items in system preferences.
Any help would be much, much appreciated! Please help me keep my sanity!

It's Pages 5.2. This is the only version of Pages I have ever had so the documents I had created with pages were just test documents to see what Pages was like. They were created once and then edited once right after being created.
Pages is now not letting me create new documents. It sits there and becomes unresposive. I have tried to uninstall pages and reinstall to see if that would do any good. It didnt seem to effect it at all. So now I can't even use the whole program unless I want to edit those two documents which I obviously just want to get rid of.

How do I reopen old Word files? I have many, many documents that I created in the last century with earlier versions of Word for Mac. Here is the version information of one such file chosen more or less at random: "Microsoft Word

Everytime I start Pages it opens old documents

When I start Pages, older documents are opened automatically. I have unchecked "Restore Windows when Quitting and re-opening apps" and yet, everytime I open windows, it opens the last couple things I've been working on. How can I stop this?

I'm a bit puzzled.
Not only here it behave as I described but this behavior was also described in several threads in which some users were ranting against some Lion's features.
For what I get here, it may be a localization problem because when I tried to apply one of the tools listed by Peggy : Lion Tweaks, I correctly got the property NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows in the preferences files
but it changes nothing to the apps behavior.

When I drop a page into a second document the text and numbers are misaligned. How can I stop this?

I have a master PDF that I am coping pages into from a sub-portion PDF document. When I drop the new page in many characters (text and numbers) are misaligned on the recently added page and some characters have just vanished. I tried converting to PDF/A Mode for one source document and PDF/X Mode for another that seemed to fix the issue.
I'm wondering if there is a better better way, maybe some setting I can change in order to prevent my plain old PDFs from having this character jumbling?

You very likely have fonts embedded in the source file that are not in the new file and that scrambles things. Why not just extract the page from the old document and then do an insert to see if that does the job. Extra work, but it might help identify the problem.

I also had this problem after I installed Mavericks: Pages files freezing at close, need to force quit.
Workaround: when saving any document created with an earlier version of Pages, be sure to untick the "include preview in document".
For some reason, this resolves the problem.
BTW "loose" is not a verb. You probably mean "lose".

I keep getting the message that I need to download the images update to open old documents. The update was downloaded on 11/24/13. Checking for new updates shows all updates have been made. What is the issue?

You have both your older iWork apps and the newer Maverick apps on your computer.
The new Maverick apps are in the Applications folder.
The older iWork apps are in the Applications/iWork folder.
Of the two, the older iWork apps are more useful so don't throw them out.

Inserting pages before pg 1, document then opens to old page 1 (XI Pro)

Dear Support Team,
I am baffled. I use Adobe Acrobat XI Pro 11.0.2. Here is the scenario that is driving me crazy:
I open a multi-page pdf document (titled Report).
I then view the thumbnails of that document.
I find another pdf document (titled Charts) and drag it unopened from my desktop and place it before the thumbnail of the first page of my opened document (Reports).
All seems well, all pages of the Charts pdf were inserted before the first page of the Reports pdf and are showing correctly in thumbnail view.
However, if I close the pdf and reopen it, it will automatically open to the old first page (what used to be the first page of Reports), let's say page 5.
So, I have to go to the file properties and change the "open to page 5" and make it say "open to page 1"
This happens every time I insert a pdf document or even just a pdf page from another document before page 1 in my open document.
It's like Acrobat keeps making the document open to the old page 1 no matter how many pages I insert before the old page 1.
I just want to insert pages and have it open to the new page 1 without having to go to the file properties menu every time.
Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your time. My acrobat preferences were already set to disable the restore last view settings, so that didn't work.
I've done a bunch of testing since you responded and have discovered that this issue only happens when I insert pages into a pdf document created by our office scanner (Konica Minolta bizhub C452). When I scan a document, it creates a pdf. If I then take that pdf and try to insert another document or page before page 1, the document properties immediately change to "open to page 5" or whatever the original page 1 used to be.
I'm not sure what's going on here. I tried copying the scanned pdf to a different location/drive, and still no luck. This is a bummer because we work with scanned documents so often and frequently need to insert and rearrange pages. For now, whenever I insert pages before page 1, I promptly go to the document properties and change the "open to page" to page 1. Very annoying.

Pages v5 doesn't update/old documents not readable

Using Pages to write assignments with iCloud to sync between iPad (travel) and iMac (home).
Update iMac with Maverick and then free Pages update to v5.
Now can't access old documents ! And the Pages version says v 4,3 even though it says updated to v 5 on the app update page
And then they ask for 20 $ to update when you follow the link from the can't open page box .. that's more than I paid for the app.
Can anyone help me please ? Need to send in assignment

Pages 5 does not combine List styles into Paragraph styles.
Use Pages '09, if you have it, it should be in your Applications/iWork folder.

Just thought I'd add my solution, I decided to go with WebDAV and I think it actually works better than the iTunes way, the steps are pretty much the same but avoiding the iTunes interface just makes things easier and faster.
I followed this guide but it does have a small mistake in the httpd-dav.conf file, on line 2, where it's WebServer/WebDAV">, it should be <Directory "/Library/WebServer/WebDAV">.
The tricky part is setting permissions which if wrong will give you errors when connecting with the iPad, I opted to set all to Read&Write since my home network has a hardware firewall. Another convenience was to add an alias to the webdav share on the Desktop.
I'm still expecting the call from Apple but even if they fix the iTunes I'm sticking with WebDAV, atleast until I see what's new with iOS5 and iCloud this fall which should bring true sync for documents (I'm hoping that they will offer encryption with my own keys, if not, then I'll probably keep using WebDAV).

Safari keeps opening old pages

Safari keeps opeing old pages even though I have closed them. It seems like I have several versions of safari open, but I don't think I do. I just did the latest software update and the problem continues.

You can empty the caches in Safari by pressing Option+Command+E keys. This will likely stop the behavior.
You might have to remove Safari plist files from User Library (might be hidden hold down option key under Finder window Go Menu>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Safari.plist.
Place plist on desktop or in Trash without emptying trash, then reopen Safari. This will recreate a new plist.
Finally you can "Reset Safari" which will remove various Safari settings. "Reset SafarI" is available under the "Safari" Menu…

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

I downloaded the new Pages and Numbers through my app store but when I open my old documents, it still tells me my 30 day trial is over. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize the new applications?

More information: I have a 3 year old MacBook and had been using "Microsoft for Mac" until last week when I took my MacBook in for some upgrades- including the operating system Lion. I have been unable to use the Word, Excel, etc. programs because they are not supported on the new operating system... and I already used my 30 day trial of iWork when we first purchased the computer. I decided to buy Pages and Numbers through the App Store icon. When I open the Pages and Numbers under my Applications, I can get them to work. However, when I open old documents saved on my computer, they go into the 'old' iWork messages of that my trial has expired. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize that I've purchased Pages and Numbers?

You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

It's either in local folders, as it seem you had been doing, or in icloud. If you go into the mac's Pages and view the icloud files, you can drag on onto another to create a folder. But you can only have folder one level deep, so you can't organize your files/folders like you can on a mac, using nested folder several levels deep.

Thank you, but after an hour with apple support on the phone we came to the conclusion that the documents are lost... So the lesson is, don't trust icloud as a back up solution! A month worth of work down the drain...
