Pages: page numbers in TOC don't match document

I originally created this document in Word.  I then converted it to Pages.  I had gotten most of the bugs out, then updated Pages just a week or so ago.  When I opened the document in the new version of Pages, the pagination was out of whack.  I got the pagination in the body of the text corrected except for one thing.  In this doc, I have used roman numerals in the front matter, then in the body, I have used 1, 2, 3, etc.  Well, in the TOC, the title of the first section correctly shows as on page 1, but the title of the first chapter is shown as starting on page ii (whereas in the text, it actually would read "2"), similarly, the first subsection in the text is on page 2 (correctly labeled in the text), but in the TOC it reads "ii".  The TOC incorrectly shows roman numerals for all of the subsections in chapter 1, except the second to last one, which correctly reads "13".  The TOC also shows chapter 2 starting on "xvi" whereas in the text it is actually "16".  Then, starting on page 17, to the end of the TOC, all of the numbers are correct.  How do I get Pages to correct the TOC to replace the roman numerals with the standard numerals?  I want to emphasize that the numerals are correct in the body of the text, they are only incorrect in the TOC.  I also want to emphasize again that this problem developed only after I made the most recent update to Pages 5.0 and Mavericks 10.9.

Peter,
Interesting suggestion.  I actually had a major complaint with Pages 5.  In Pages '09 you could activate a search function to the left of the document, that would allow searching for any term, and would identify and list all of the instances in the document.  This is a tremendous time-saver when editing a large document (in my case, a book) where one needs internal consistency.  I don't understand why they would remove that feature and leave us with only a tiny search box that goes through instances one by one.
From what I read in your forum, it looks like I might lose some formatting again if I return the document to Pages '09.  But, if there is no alternative, that's what I'll do.
Not sure how to archive Pages 5.

In pages(not the New version) footer is over to the left, so when i put the page numbers in they don't sit right. How do i move the footer

The footer is not only to the left. To get the page number to the right you can use Format > Align right. That will make all page numbers move to the right. Is that what you want?

  • How do I put page numbers in TOC to left of sections?

This is how the actual Pages manual does its toc, yet within the manual, the page numbers always appear to the right of the text.  I thought this format might solve another toc layout problem I have.  I'm cleaning up a book of poems written by a friend.  Every poem has a number (and is on a new page) but only a few of the poems have a title.  This means that if I tab between number and title, where this exists, the entry goes off the line, see number X  (not my choice to use Roman numerals!):
So, I thought if the page numbers were to the left, I could format the style so where there was a title (like Au suivant) this could be properly aligned.

fruhulda was amazingly helpful, worked beyond the call of duty on my document, and provided me with the essential idea , that I needed two styles for the poem heading line, one when there was just a number and the other when there was a number and title.
I still wouldnt mind knowing for the future how one can put the page numbers to the left in the TOC.
And for the record, dont do what I have just done: workin Pages (as I dont have word), and then export and send to the friend using Word.  I have discovered the hard way that my Page styles did not export to Word!

  • Page Numbers Not Appearing in Data Merge Document?

Hello, hopefully someone can help. I am pretty new to InDesign but learning a lot.  I am creating a member directory of about 200 pages (about 2800 records merged from .csv to InDesign 6). Everything is working fine with the merge, except generating the page numbers.  I tried adding page number at the bottom of the page to the master BEFORE merging. But if I do that, it greys out the "multiple records per page" option when trying to perform the Data Merge (using "Create merged Document").  So, I tried adding the page number to the A-master AFTER creating the merged document, but the page number is not appearing on any of the pages.  There must be a way to do this, can anyone help?
(FYI - to generate the auto page numbers, I am going to the Type-Insert Special Character-Markers-Current Page Number, and placing that within a text field at the bottom of the page.  Thanks in advance. )

Here is a screen shot.  I have placed it on the A-Master.  See Screenshot#1.  Screenshot #2 shows Page 70 with no page number (and no other pages have page numbers that I can see.  Thanks for your advice on fixing....
Sorry, here is screenshot #2, (with personal details redacted but the records are there behind the grey boxes):

  • How do i start page numbering in the middle of a document in pages

I need to begin page numbering after the initial pages in my thesis. I can get the page numbers to not appear for the first few pages but when it does begin (say page 4), it counts the previous pages.
I there a way I can get pages (5.2) to count from page 4 onwards?
So that page 4 will read "page 1", page 5 read "page 2" etc.....
    Thanks

Have you divided the document by Inserting Section Breaks?
Have you unchecked Continue from previous section in Section under Document?

  • Page Numbering when printing a multiple sheet document

I moved this post from Pages after accidentally posting it there earlier...
In considering an approach to solving a problem posted earlier today I thought about using the Continue (Page Numbers) from Previous Sheet setting in the Sheet Inspector to display a sequence of numbers on a series of sheets. All looked good on the live document, but when Printing to PDF or Exporting to PDF, I get the same first page number on each sheet. Further, the number on that first page depends on which Sheet was selected when I did the export. All pages and sheets print/export, it's just the page numbering that seems anomalous.
Let's say I have a document with three two-page sheets. On the live document, page numbers are 1 and 2 on the first sheet, 3 and 4 on the second sheet, etc. Just what I would expect. When printed to PDF or exported to PDF, I get 1,2,1,2,1,2 or 3,4,3,4,3,4 or 5,6,5,6,5,6 depending on which sheet is selected as I begin the export or print dialog.
Any one else seeing this? Is there a logical explanation for it? This is on a MBP with Snow Leopard. I haven't tried printing to paper to see what happens there.

    Hi Jerry,
Not the same results, but I did get weird ones.
    Using iBook & OS X 10.4.11.
Three two page sheets, each with a single table. Sheet 2 and sheet three produced by Duplicating Sheet 1.
    Live display shows pn/pc as
    1/6, 2/6, 3/6, 4/6, 5/6, 6/6
Preview (sheet 3 selected), created by clicking preview button in Print dialogue, shows
    1/6, 2/6, 3/4, 4/4, 5/6, 6/6
Preview (sheet 1 selected) shows same as above.
Preview (sheet 2 selected) shows same as live.
    1/6, 2/6, 3/6, 4/6, 5/6, 6/6
Repeating print to preview with s2, s1, s3 selected gives correct results each time.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Is there a way to place page numbers in different places within a document in Pages?

I have a document with multiple chapters and I need to place the page number in a different place at the beginning of each chapter than the rest of the document.  For example, on the first page of each chapter, the page number must be at the center in the footer while on every other page, the page number needs to be in the right of the header.  I know that there is a way to do this in Microsoft Word but I'm not sure how to do it in Pages. Anyone have any ideas? I would prefer not to have to download Word.
    Thank you.

    Hi Brian,
If you go with Peter's suggestion, there are some details that since I've got a minute here, I'll mention...
Set your Line Spacing for the document text to "Exactly" before you begin adjusting your table, otherwise you will have registration problems.
Your Table will have to be a Floating object. Otherwise you won't be able to slide it into the margin. And, speaking of the margin, stay out of the gray area with the numbers if you want to print them. The gray border around your document is the area that the printer driver says is non-printable.
In the Table Inspector, set Columns to 1 and Rows to 20 or whatever you prefer for your document. Set the number of Header Rows to 0.
To apply the numbering, use the Fill feature: Type 1 in the first cell, type 2 in the second cell. Select both cells. Grab the Fill Handle in the lower right corner of the selection and drag it down to add a series of numbers to the rest of the column. (Easier than typing.)
Decide how you want to justify the numbering. The Text Inspector has both vertical and horizontal justification controls for this. Just select the entire table and make the settings.
Set the cell height to match the text line spacing. You can get close with the table row height, and maybe closer with a minor line spacing adjustment. Don't expect perfection, but you can get pretty close.
You probably don't want the cell borders to show, so with the entire table selected, go to the Graphic Inspector and set Stroke to None.
Lastly, cause the table to appear on every page by doing: Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master.
    Regards,
    Jerry

  • Page numbers from deleted book file persist in document

I have 4 documents that I needed to merge so I attempted to put them in a book file (which I am not at all familiar with how to use). I removed the documents from the book file because it was not doing what I needed it to do, but the auto section page numbers are persisting in the individual documents and I cannot get rid of them. For example I have page numbering starting on page 5, but pages 1-4 have page numbers 5-8 on them and I cannot get rid of them. (I can do this manually of course but would like to know why they are persisting)

Do you mean the numbers physically appear on the pages and you don't want them there (if so, delete them from the master page(s)) or do you mean the numbering scheme is wrong (if so, check your section and numbering options)?

  • Page numbers are repeating in Page Thumbnail view.

Using Adobe Actobate XI Standard with Windows.  When I in insert another adobe document into my current document (by either using the tool Insert from File or dragging it from another screen), my page numbers in the thumbnails get the same page number.  For example, original document is 5 pages, insert a page 6 from somewhere else and it is now listed as a second page 5.  Insert a page 7 and now I have three that are labeled page 5.  How can I stop/fix this.  Thanks

Those are page labels, not page numbers, and they don't have to be in order, or to use the same scheme.
To set them all as the actual pages numbers click the Options button in the Pages panel and then select Number Pages. Select "All" and then your numbering scheme and you're done.

  • TextEdit won't print page numbers.

I have followed directions of choosing to print "headers and footers" in the print dialogue and the header is indeed printed but no page numbers. This happens with any document I print.
    Is there a solution?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Since it works in the new account, then there's something corrupted/conflicting in the original one. While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Page numbers different sizes on different pages

How do I get the page numbers I added (version 9) to be the same size througout the document?  My document has different font sizes throughout and there are a few pages where the page number gets real small.  How Do I keep the page numbers the same size throughout the document? Thanks!!

Look in the Inspector palette > Lay out > Section. Is "left and right page different" ticked? Detick it.

  • CS3 and page numbering

Sorry but I cannot find where to change page numbering from the start of the document to say the 3rd page would now be page number 1. I found the preferences for section numbering under preferences but can't remember how to start page numbering at a different page. Thank you for help.

Hi. Nothing is selected. I just went into my document and clicked on the continue text at bottom and then clicked on next page so a new text box would be created with the continued text. I did this for 26 pages. Every one came up as centered text and ignore text wrap when I went back to check them.
Also, might you know how to get the 3rd page of the document to start automatically as page 1 (page 2 and 3 are my spread but when I go to numbering & section options and click on start page numbering at 3... so that hopefully it will start numbering there... it messes up my document and makes page 2 a separate page instead of keeping page 2 and 3 as my 1st spread... and then it makes page 3 and 4 as my new 1st spread. Thanks again.

  • Book Page Numbering Broken - InDesign 5.5

I've been experiencing some very persistent and reproducible errors with book numbering in InDesign 5.5.
Any feedback or ideas would be very welcome.
Platform: OS X Lion (relatively clean install), InDesign CS5.5 7.5.2, no plugins on test environment
    Reproducible condition:
Create a new book, enable automatic page numbering (continue from previous section).
Create four new documents, to each add ten pages. Ensure automatic numbering is on.
Add each of these documents to the book.
    Save the book.
Update page numbering for the book.
    Result:
Documents do not display correct book page numbers in the book palette. They show document, not book, relative numbering. Each document displays (1-10) in the book palette.
When viewing the documents themselves, the first two document page number as expected: (1-10) & (11-20). This is also the result when exporting to PDF.
However documents 3 & 4 in the book take page numbers (11-20) as well, as though they were each positioned second in the book.
    Tested:
I've tried alternative automatic page numbering options for the book (start on odd/even) with no change. UPDATE: on a 20 document book there are some sections that seem to restart as "pairs", so number restarts randomly throughout the book. Same document and book numbering options as described here.
I've tested with different numbers of documents, different page counts.
I do update the page numbering after each attempt, no change.
Message was edited by: EthanJA - split up screenshot
Note about large document test added.

lilia@, thanks for the ideas, keep them coming...! Regarding these two, I've tried both already, no joy. Reordering document 3 to document 2 does result in it being re page numbered, but the "new" third document loses it's page numbers again (i.e. the book seems to be maintaining "pairs" of docs and reordering just changes which document is being re numbered).
Have also added using the plus button on the panel, same. Thanks for the ideas though.
Fwiw, this problem shows up on both existing books and new test books with fresh test docs. I've also tried the borderline voodoo method of exporting to IDML and reopening/saving the docs. Pretty much at my wits end. Well, a little more wit left, but not much.

  • Page numbers in page panel don't match current page numbers

    Hi all,
I have been working with InDesign for a decade now and never had this problem.
I created a document in InDesign CS 5.5, very simple and with consecutive pages, no sections etc.
My page numbers show up correctly on my spreads. BUT, for some reason, the numbers that are shown in the page panel, underneath the page icons, are different. The first page is named "11", followed by 12-17, then the numbers jump to 111, 112 etc. I selected all pages and chose "Numbering and Section Options", setting them all to automatic page numbering, but to no avail.
As I said, the actual page number on the page is unaffected. But this bugs me since I am afraid that the document is somehow messed up.
I am using a simple InDesign document, no book file.
Any idea why this would happen?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you - I just found the solution to my problem (after playing around some more), and it turns out to be rather simple. In Numbering & Section Options, the Section Prefix was set to "1" - this field needs to be clear. That's why InDesign would add a 1 to every number.
