  • Empty pages panel

Last week my pages panel suddenly started showing up empty.
I have deleted the prefs, to no avail.
This makes it very difficult to work on files, as I can neither delete pages nor get to the master pages.
    Help!

Me too.  My Pages panel periodically stops working.  First it just appears empty (plain grey). If I try resizing the panel, it gets even weirder.  When I click on the "resize handle" of the panel, the little dotted triangle in the bottom right corner, the panel just disappears!  The same happens when I try to grab either the bottom edge or the right-hand edge.  The panel just disappears, and then cheekily reappears when I release the mouse button.
I can right-click on the panel and select "Panel Options", which lets me play around with some options.  For example, by switching off the "Show Vertically" option, I can get some of the thumbnails to display, but not correctly.  A few thumbnails appear in a horizontal row, but then the row goes off the right-hand side of the panel leaving most of the thumbnails invisible.
After a while the resizing function starts working again, but even resizing the panel to fill the whole screen is not enough to show all the thumbnails.  They start OK with page 1 in the top left, but then continue in a horizontal row that disappears off the right-hand side of the panel.  If there are enough pages in the file, the row reappears on the left, but the page number has jumped by about six, so six thumbnails are missing.
I have tried resetting the panel with "Window>Workspace>Reset Advanced", but that doesn't make any difference.
I have also tried resetting all the preferences by restarting InDesign with Ctrl-Alt-Shift held down.  I answer yes to the "reset preferences" dialog, but this still does not fix the Pages panel.
There are several threads on this bug.  One user on this forum had to reformat his computer and reinstall all his software, and the moderator closed the thread (here) as "answered".  I don't consider that an "answer".  Is there any solution that doesn't require reinstalling all my software?

  • Missing pages panel

    Please help!
I am working in CS3 InDesign (5.03 updated)and my pages panel is missing. Well missing is not right, it is there but it is empty. All other panels are working OK but pages panel is empty, no master pages, no delete page icon etc.
I have tried deleting InDesign preferences, restarting them, change workspace to default, reseting panels from inside InDesign. Nothing helps, except reinstalling. But after a while problem re appears. My "solution" takes a lot of time and ultimately does not fix the problem.
Anyone has a similar problem and how do you fix it?

Interesting. A better solution to my apparently somewhat related
    unrelated problem is reproduced below:
Courtesy of Martien Jan de Haan
    > I found the solution! You have to clean up the map C:\Users\User
    > Name\AppData\Local\Temp. That's all!
I took that to mean delete all the files in that folder, and it worked
for me (actually my folder structure was a little different, and I moved
the files somewhere else, and then deleted them a week later, when I was
    sure everything was still working).
My problem (not being able to copy and paste text out of Indesign into
other apps) was fixed by loading ID under a new account (but it came
back when I went back to my old account). But I didn't want to take the
time to make a new account look like my existing account, so I used the
    solution above.
So if this comes back, or if you want to try some voodoo to try and make
sure it doesn't come back, try deleting the files in the above temp folder.

  • Page numbers in page panel don't match current page numbers

    Hi all,
I have been working with InDesign for a decade now and never had this problem.
I created a document in InDesign CS 5.5, very simple and with consecutive pages, no sections etc.
My page numbers show up correctly on my spreads. BUT, for some reason, the numbers that are shown in the page panel, underneath the page icons, are different. The first page is named "11", followed by 12-17, then the numbers jump to 111, 112 etc. I selected all pages and chose "Numbering and Section Options", setting them all to automatic page numbering, but to no avail.
As I said, the actual page number on the page is unaffected. But this bugs me since I am afraid that the document is somehow messed up.
I am using a simple InDesign document, no book file.
Any idea why this would happen?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you - I just found the solution to my problem (after playing around some more), and it turns out to be rather simple. In Numbering & Section Options, the Section Prefix was set to "1" - this field needs to be clear. That's why InDesign would add a 1 to every number.

  • Is there a way to disable drag-and-drop on the pages panel?

Hi, I'm using Indesign CS3 on Windows XP.  My computer is a laptop and the problem I'm having is that when I have the pages panel open, I have sometimes drag-and-dropped pages of a document into a new order without meaning to (the laptop touch pad seems made for these butterfingers-type moves).  The documents that I'm laying out are several hundred pages long, so sometimes I don't notice that I've screwed a few pages up until much later.  If there is any way to just turn this feature off, that would be great.  Due to the arrangement in which I usually work best (on a sofa), I would prefer not to have to attach an actual mouse to the laptop. Thank you for any help.

    Not that I know of.

  • Can you make each page show a different name in the pages panel?

I would like to be able to name each page with a different name so they display in the pages panel (under the page icon) with a different name for each page rather than just 1, 2, 3 etc. eg. page one called 'Matt', page 2 called 'Satin', page 3 'Gloss. Is this possible?
    Thanks

Yes, but it might not work the way you fully intend.
On each page in the "pages" panel, right click and choose 'Numbering & Section Options'.
From the popup, select 'Start Page Numbering At' and add the page number. Eg, Page 1 would be 1, Page 2 would be 2 etc (you need to do this for each page)If you don't want numbers, you can select from their 'Style' dropdown but you must select something
In the 'Section Prefix' box, enter the text you would like displayed - Matt, Satin, Gloss etc
If you want these names to show up in the document as a page number, select 'Include prefix when numbering pages'
The result of this is that each page is now it's own section of the document.

  • Page Thumbnails not displaying in Pages Panel

    Hi all,
Hopefully a quick question...I've searched through the Forum and not spotted a similar issue.
I have a user who is experiencing an unusual issue in InDesign CS6 - Page Thumbnails aren't displaying in the Pages Panel (such that the panel is completely blank - no new page icon etc.), and Swatches aren't displaying in the Swatches Panel (default swatches or new swatches - the panel is completely blank).  I've checked all of the Panel Display options, and have toggled the thumbnail display size up/down, and on/off to no avail.  This problem is also non-document specific, it's happening on all documents either previously saved or freshly created.  I've also tried multiple workspaces and that hasn't helped.
I've also tried binning the preferences  and this hasn't helped...
Any thoughts where to start?  My hunch is possibly plugins not working/missing, but I'm not sure what/where to check.
Any help would be very much appreciated...

I hate to have to bump an old topic, but replacing my prefs doesn't work either. Tried restarting the computer too. Nothing really works and I hate to have to waste time reinstalling when I doubt that would help at this point. (hates windows).

  • No option to Load Master Pages on Pages Panel (Windows)

Hi there.... I'm a longtime user in the Mac platform, but am now doing some smaller projects in a Windows platform. The Load Master Pages is not even listed among the choices when I view the Pages panel using CS6. What doi need to toggle on/off and where is it in order to get this option in the menu list please? Thanks for your help as I'm really at a loss here.

I understood that is where this was being posted, as that was the forum I chose. If not, twas not intentional.

  • InDesign CS4 page numbering not displaying correctly in Pages Panel

    Hello,
I searched the forums for a solution to my problem before posting. I am sorry if I'm doubling someone's question but here I go:
I noticed this problem I have about 6 month ago. When I create a simple document with automatic page numbering everything is fine. When I try and create a section (i.e. I want my numbering to start at 1 at page 3) it actually works however in the Pages Panel the pages are displayed with their basic numbers. You will agree this is rather confusing. I've tryed different files, same files on different computers and so on. The problem has to do with my installation of InDesign CS4 and I suppose it's some kind of a display option I accidentally turned on.
Could someone please suggest a solution? Thank you!

  • Can someone help me retrieve my pages panel?

My Pages panel has disappeared. It isn't an option to view it at all. I tried  trashing the pages panel plugin and replacing it, trashing indesign preferences and restarting (pressing shift/control/option/command while starting indesign) and disabling/enabling the pages panel hyperlink in extensions manager. None of this has worked. Can someone help me? Very frustrated.

Yes, uninstall InDesign, but try the other stuff first. See CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3 for info on the clearer tool.

  • Acrobat Standard - Pages Panel

    I am using
    - Windows 7 Pro
    - Acrobat 9 Standard
I have a lot of new PDF files every day which I need to set - Document Properties - Navigation Tab as "Pages Panel and Page" -
so the acrobat file appears with Pages Panel at Left on open.
I know Acrobat 9 Standard settings for the above must be done individually one by one.
    1. Does Acrobat 9 Professional has the option to automatically set "Pages Panel and Page" setting for all PDF files instead of individually.
    2. Can I just get the Acrobat 9 Professional UPDGRADE version as I am now using licensed Acrobat 9 Standard ?
    Thank you.

Yes, you can set this up with a batch process in Acrobat Pro, but not with Standard. Adobe doesn't sell Acrobat 9 any longer, but you could upgrade to Acrobat 10 Pro.

  • I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  Results were reproduced.  The verdict is:
    - complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
    - different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
    - using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
    - adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
    - just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating  the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality.  It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some  improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and  whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet.  But  unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was  getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

  • Page number prefixes in pages panel?

Is it possible to add a prefix to the page that appears in the pages panel (and not just on the page itself)? For example, in quark I can add 'C' before the first page so that the page layout panel shows the first page as C1 for cover 1. I can't find anything that seems to do this, but I'm probably missing something. CS3 if it matters. Thanks for any help.

If you use Different Master Pages.
You can then right click the master page in the pages panel and change the Prefix to whatever you want.
It appears at the top of the page in the pages panel, not at the bottom in page number.
I usually prefix my table of contents master pages with TOC, which appears at the top of the page and is a great visual reference to what page I'm clicking on.

  • Thumbnails disappeared in Pages panel in InDesign CS4

The thumbnails that show the page spreads and the master pages have disappeared in the Pages panel of ID CS4 (on Windows XP SP3). I can't figure out (a) what caused them to disappear or, more importantly, (b) how to get them back. In the Panel Options, I have Show Thumbnails checked for both Pages and Masters, and all 3 of the Icons options checked. Any suggestions on how to get them back would be appreciated.

In followup, I tried to reinstalling ID4 -- a painful process. That didn't solve the problem. So I tried unchecking display thumbnails vertically. That worked in that the thumbnails for both masters and pages displayed correctly horizontally. I then rechecked display vertically and they disappeared again.

  • Can "Document Properties" be set to "Pages panel and..." by default?

I would like to have Acrobat Pro 8.1.5 creat ALL new documents with "pages panel and pages" as default so I don't have to waste time setting properties for each new document.
Is there a way to set that value as a default?
    Thanks,
    Mike
