Pages Per Second, User Modes

What is being recorded in the Pages per second metrics, is it:
1) The DOWNLOAD and (emulated) RENDERING of the page with its attributes/objects (pages, images, frames etc)
OR
2) Just the DOWNLOAD of the page with its attributes/objects.
Does this change between User Modes i.e. Thick and Thin Client

Hi Paul,
A page is the eTester representation of what would be a web page in terms of navigations and actions that are performed in the web browser after the document is completely rendered and before the last transition.
Open the navigation editor and take a look at the Navigations tree. There it can be seen how the pages are divided. Each page will have between 0 to multiple navigations. Pages with zero navigations doesn't count, these pages won't even be shown in the report. If the page have frames the page will show more than one navigation. If the web application uses ajax or a similar technology with http transactions, or if the page uses java applets, flash objects or activex controls that makes http transactions and the proxy recorder was On, then the pages most likely will show more than one navigation.
eLoad will request all the navigations contained in any given page of any script in your load test scenario, if the web server will responds back successfuly for all the navigations, then this is counted as one page received. eLoad willl be requesting multiple pages from the different scripts that exists in the scenario submitted then it will count how many of those pages are being received in an interval of time, then makes a units convertion of the time interval in order to display it in seconds.
The pages received per second is the average of how many pages with all the navigations contained in it were successfully obtained from the web servers every second.
The pages per second is the same statistic regardless if you are running in thick or in thin.
The pages per second doesn't take into consideration the download of images, scripts, css, or any other object. These are considered in the hits per second.

• Cannot update pages for second user

We have 2 users on our iMac and my wife updated pages to 5.2, when i opened pages it asked if i wanted to update but i was in a hurry so said later. now i cannot get it to update. any suggestions?
thanks

There is one Pages v5.2 available on your iMac for both of you. And, if you had the previous Pages ’09 v4.3 installed, it was moved to /Applications/iWork '09 folder, and is still available for use. Two Pages versions installed will produce challenges.
We are preconditioned to believe that a higher version must be a better, improved solution. Pages v5 is a complete rewrite/redesign that offers bugs and about 100 less features than v4.3. It is intuitive which is the better solution to use going forward. This decision can be fortified by reading the reviews in the App Store, and the endless posts here about Pages v5 issues.
The problem introduced with Pages v5 is an entirely new .pages document format that is incompatible with prior Pages applications. For instance, lets say that I have Pages ’09 v4.3 running, and double-click a Pages v5 document to open it. Here is the dialog box that results:
If the preceding document had been created with Pages ’08 or ’09, then the double-click would open it in the already running Pages ’09 application. If no Pages application were running, the double-click would attempt to open the document in Pages v5. If it is a .pages document created by Pages ’09, Pages v5.2 will open it without any warning about the earlier document format. As soon as you edit and save, it becomes a version 5 document that causes the above dialog when attempting to reopen it in Pages ’09.
When you have mixed Pages application versions and documents, it changes your workflow habits. You can now only open Pages ’09 documents with either a right-click on the document, and then choose Open With > Pages (4.3). Or, use the Pages ’09 open file browser.
I dragged the Pages ’09 and Pages v5.2 application icons to my Dock from their respective locations in /Applications/iWork '09 and /Applications. These Dock aliases make it somewhat easier to work with disparate .pages documents.

• SCOM 2012 Memory Pages Per Second is too High

Hi
With the latest update from Scom Windows Server Operation System Monitoring
now we have this alert many times only on Server with a lot of Memory.
For Example we have 3 Hyper-V Cluster Server with 144 GB Ram. Used Memory is almost 40 GB. But we receive daily 2 ore 3 time this message. And it will be closed after some minutes again.
Exact the same with the Backup Server with 32 GB Ram. Uses Memory is 16 GB Ram
All other Server show never an Error like this. And before this Update come. We see never a problem.
Any Idea
Kind regrads

Hi
Now I see the Problem. We have installed DPM 2012 at the same Time and i think this is a Problem with the DPM Agent. The alerts are always on the same time.
So I think is not a problem from monitoring.
Thank you for your assistance
Kind regards

• Memory pages per sec is too high

Hi, I see the value 5000 in monitor "Memory Pages Per Second" in the tab "Threshold Comparison>Specify Threshold value to compare". Is this value in MB or pages/sec that system writes/reads.
Please make me understand.
-Satya

I don't think 5000 is a value in MB.
Taken from
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/01/29/an-overview-of-troubleshooting-memory-issues-part-two.aspx
Please check the underlined part below -
Pages/sec is the rate at which pages are read from or written to disk to resolve
hard page faults. This counter is a primary indicator of the kinds of faults
that cause system-wide delays. It is the sum of Memory \ Pages Input/sec and
Memory \ Pages Output/sec. It is counted in numbers of pages, so it can be
compared to other counts of pages, such as Memory \ Page Faults/sec, without
conversion. It includes pages retrieved to satisfy faults in the file system
cache (usually requested by applications) non-cached mapped memory files.

• I bought Pages from App Store; can't get it to come up on second user account. Is there a way to share?

I have 2 user accounts on my Macbook; I purchased Pages for one but can't get it recognized on second; is there a way to pull it up on second user account, or do I have to purchase it for each?

Is Pages in the Apps folder or has it been moved? Apps in Mac HD/Applications should be available for every user account on the Mac unless you have enacted Parental Restrictions that make the app unavailable for a user to access.

• Is it possible to have a PDF form flow to a second page IF the user needs to type in a lot of information? ( Like a Word Doc would)

Is it possible to have a PDF form flow to a second page IF the user needs to type in a lot of information? ( Like a Word Doc would)
An automated second page.

There are two approaches.
If you wish to use AcroForm technology, then you would need to write a bunch of JavaScript to enable this. It has been done, but it’s not trivial.
If you wish to use XFA technology, then it can be setup to happen automatically.
Be aware that in both cases, even though both technologies are part of the PDF standard, that the forms will only be usable in this manner in Adobe’s viewers as many others don’t support JavaScript or XFA.

• Weird number of disk-transfers per second when in SYNC mode

Hi, I've managed to configure BDB in synchronous mode (i.e., each put is persisted on disk when committing). However, now I'm doing 2000 puts per seconds, each with payload from 10 to 250 kilobytes, yet I'm getting (from iostat) that each disk-transfer is only about 6 kilobytes (because of 23 megabytes written on disk per second, divided by 3750 transfers per second). How is that even possible? Is there a way of telling BDB to minimize the number of disk-transfers per second in SYNC mode? It seems that BDB is breaking each put's payload into smaller pieces, and only then saving to disk in a bunch of disk-transfers.

Hi,
JE does not split up a single write into multiple writes -- and certainly doesn't do an fsync for each one.
JE may do multiple writes (but not fsyncs) for a single, multi-operation txn if the write buffer fills. And it will do multiple writes for a single operation, if the record is larger than the write buffer. However, it doesn't sounds like this (overflowing of the write buffer) is what you're experiencing. In any case, you can configure the size of the JE write buffer with EnvironmentConfig.LOG_TOTAL_BUFFER_BYTES, LOG_NUM_BUFFERS, and LOG_BUFFER_SIZE.
Another thing is that JE will group fsyncs (this is called "group commit") when multiple threads are committing concurrently with SYNC durability. In this case you'll see a smaller number of physical writes than the number of commits.
I asked a colleague who has more experience with iostat than I do about this, and he gave me the following information:
We would expect there to be one sync per put on average, assuming the application is doing serial writes and there are no group commits to further obfuscate the issue. Given the high sync write rate, the writes are presumably to an SSD, or spinning rust with a large non-volatile disk write cache
I'm not sure what he means by disk transactions in iostats. Perhaps he means the number of disk transfer requests issued to the device listed as tps (transfers per sec) in iostat output.
If he is using ext3 and he does not have the file system mounted with noatime, he may be observing write requests to update the file system "atime" metadata with each request. So for 2K sync puts/sec he would see roughly 4K (2k put + 2k atime update) write requests/sec and his average write payload would be ~12KB/transfer (the atime write payload is negligible), which would be consistent with the application's put behavior. This is all a guess.
I hope this helps.

• Svchost.exe with "Dhcp, eventlog, lmhosts" services is generating thousands of page faults and I/O reads per second?

On one of our Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise (SP1) servers, we're noticing a strange phenomenon.....that the svchost.exe that hosts "Dhcp, eventlog, lmhosts" is constantly generating page faults....a few thousand per second, accumulating to billions of total
page faults. I/O reads and I/O other are also rising every second. Cpu is consistently 2%, and memory is constant. (~40M).
I'm guessing that it's the eventlog service because our HP openview log reader (opcle.exe) is also working hard to keep up. I've searched for others posting a similar problem but am coming up empty handed.
This is a MS Analysis Services 2008 server, but we haven't noticed any problems coming from SSAS. We have other file sharing-related jobs that interact with this server, that sometimes take 30 min and sometimes 6 hours, for the same workload....and
we're thinking that the 6 hour runs are somehow related to this process's unusual page faults.
Anyone else seen this eventlog strange behavior?
Thanks

Hi,
The best thing would be downloading the Process Explorer and analyzing the problem.

• CompactRio software error, safe mode, Staus light 4 flashes per second

My cRio 9204 was running fine for the past weeks. But this saturday it stopped working and Status light showing 4 flashes per second.
I opened MAX, and the cRio was in safe mode (sofeware error)
I tried to reformat the controller and reinstall the software. It did not fix the problem.
After I reformatted the controller, the Status lights were flashing twice per second (The controller has detected an error in its software)
After I installed the software, the Status lights were flashing 4 times per second (The controller software has crashed twice without rebooting or cycling power between crashes).
the Error log showed the memory was mostly free, so it was not memeory problem.
I am using LabView 2013 SP1, Real Time 13.0.1, CompactRio 13.1 Feb-2014, scan mode. The cRio is doing data logging and is running without PC connected. The TDMS file is saved in USB. Everyday a startup Vi will automatically run when there is power. Today when I check the TDMS file , I fould out it stopped recording at Saturday noon, and cRio was in error.
What could the problem be, what tests could I run to figure out the error is? Any idea would be appreciated. I have attached the error log to this message

• IMac 7,1 boot only in single user mode

Hi all
I've a colleague with the following problem... his iMac 20'' (iMac7,1) is able to boot ONLY in safe/single user mode (with shift key pressed during boot).
If he tries to boot normally, after the usual Apple logo screen he gets a blank (light grey) screen. No finder, no login screen.
We've tried this procedures:
- SMB reset
- PRAM cleared
- OS Reinstall (we've tried from Lion to Mavericks... actually there's 10.7.5 installed)... note that ALL installation procedure has completed successfully.
- tested the 1 RAM module installed (seems to be OK)
- tested the HD (no problems found)
Despite all these attempts, this iMac is booting well only if we press SHIFT during startup. All programs run well, wifi is working and online update too. If we reboot leaving it to restart normally (no key pressed) it shows Apple Logo for 1 minutes, then (after a black reset of the screen) seems to crash/stuck into an empty grey screen.
Is possible to identify which driver/kext is causing this problem? It can be an hardware problem? How we can fix it?
Thank you!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

• More flexibility in limiting requests per second or minute

We've read the docs on limiting the requests-per-second (max-rps), but we would actually like to set the threshold at less than one request per second. For example, we'd like to set the maximum requests to something like once every 5 seconds. But values like 0.2 for max-rps are not accepted. So the question is:
Is there a way to set the maximum frequency of requests to something like once every 5 or 10 seconds?
Is there an add-in that does that or could we create an add-in to do that?
It looks like the server is NOT open source, so we cannot change the current code to address this, but certainly let me know if I'm wrong about that.
In case it's helpful as background, the reason we want a lower threshold is that we only intend to limit access for html or jsp pages (not gif, jpg, js, css, etc.) That's because we don't want users to get half of a page, like the html, but no images or css, which would look like an ugly error. We want them to get the html complete with all the embeded files or get an error page. We're really only trying to block bots, which might make requests every second or slightly less often, and not block any human users. If there are other general suggestions for how to meet our goal, I'd love to hear them.

No, the lowest max limit is 1rps. The request limiting isn't really meant for what you're describing, it is for limiting high request rates. At less than 1/sec such detection would have false positive with real users anyway, so it wouldn't be such a great way of distinguishing users from bots. I'm not sure it would prove very satisfactory.
You could create your own NSAPI plugin (see docs on NSAPI usage) to implement your desired logic. I'd probably look into long term counters instead, but I don't really know the details of the exact problem you're trying to address.

• Command Line Expert Needed: Deleted hostconfig (+ others) - boots to single user mode only !

Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11
Deleted folders/files when logged in as root user. (don't ask!)
On restart , wont boot up , get grey screen with white apple logo the black screen with command line: localhost:/ root#
Started up from install cd - repaired permissions (ran twice) & verified hard drive . All okay.
Restarted but still goes back into command line with same localhost:/ root prompt
Tried a bunch of different things as per advice on these boards - discovered that there is no hostconfig file.
Restarted into verbose mode.
Here are the lines that i think may reveal exactly what I messed up - and hopefully someone out there has an idea how I can try to fix without having to do an archive/install.
BSM auditing present
disabled
rooting via boot-uuid from /chosen: (here a very long string of numbers and letters looks like a password)
Then a long line about
"got boot device = IOService:/MacRISC2PE ........."
Then, the following
"BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2"
"CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop"
"IOBluetoothHCIController::start Idle Time Stopped"
(AND HERE'S THE BIGGIE:)
/etc/rc: line 93: /etc/hostconfig: No such file or directory
Apr 1. 06:01:44 launched: /bin/sh on /etc/rc terminated abnormally, going into single user mode
localhost:/ root#
I'm pretty sure I messed thing up pretty well - was mainly network/server folders and files - definitely samba, which I think I deleted, and under "network" in the finder, I also might have deleted my computer from the server list
As an aside in case this provides any insight, when I go to the terminal app when starting up from install cd, the prompt reads :
"bash-2.05b"
I'm also able to see the contents of my hard drive when using disk utility from install cd and and trying to "mount image" ---
Everything looks intact in terms of folders/files in my user account, but in the /root folder, there's only /library - which is empty.
Any help, insight, troubleshooting and even scolding - will be welcome! I need this thing booted
Cheers

I do not have a backup. Should I back up before I try doing a reinstall of the os x?
That's also known as shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted.
It can't hurt, but it's not going to help much.
Camelot: when you say "apps and user content should stay intact" - doesn't sound very definitive. Are there any variables that come into play?
No.. generally it's pretty reliable, but yours is an odd situation. I wouldn't expect to lose any user data, just CYA
I do have a start up disk along with some apps that I created in retrospect many years ago ....(I think it's os x 10.2.8) Can I use this to boot up and then just navigate to my user files so I can get some things done that I need to?
Unlikely. For one have you even tried restoring from your Retrospect backup? (it's not the most reliable system).
Secondly, you can't boot from your Retrospect backup, so you'll need to restore that system to boot from it. Have you got a second disk to restore to (you do NOT want to restore 10.2.x over your 10.4.x system).
in terms of "random deleted files" : not entirely random
Ok, maybe not entire random, but it's also somewhat unknown. You need to have some idea of what files you're trying to restore, but if you haven't got them in a backup where are you going to get them from?
You cannot just take old copies from your 10.2.x system and hope they'll work (in case that's what you're thinking).
The BEST solution is to boot from the 10.4.x installer disk and let it do its thing.
And for what its worth, Unauthorized access attempts, in and of themselves, are not a cause for concern since they were clearly caught by the OS. It's the access attempts that succeed (and are not logged) which are more of an issue.

• Data back up from Single User Mode

Hello,
I have a problem with my 700 MHz iBook, dual USB, with OS X 10.3.9.
Unfortunately the OS doesn't start up because of "overlapped extent allocation" problem...
I would like to re-install the complete OS but before doing it, I would like to back up some directories.
Is it possible to save some data, by connecting an Ipod or some sort of external peripheral, from the Single User mode?
If yes, how can I do it?
Thank you in advance from your kind support.

Before giving up the ghost check out these:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25770.
Manually fix Overlapped Extent Allocation Errors without Disk Warrior
Overlapped overlapped extent allocation errors can be the bane of any Mac user's existence. Often, these errors go unnoticed until the problem becomes visible: your Mac might refuse to boot, crash unexpected, or worse, critical data might disappear from the Finder. Disk Utility can detect, but not fix overlapped extent allocation errors, and certain third-party utilities, such as Alsoft Diskwarrior, can fix them, but generally without reporting the consequences.
Overlapped extent allocation error occur when the file system thinks that two files are occupying the same area on the hard disk, hence overlapping on the same "inode," which is the structure which holds the location of the data blocks the file occupies, and also file permissions and flags.
Clearing the "overlapped" or "overallocated" extent allocation essentially means that you'll have to lose some data, because the only way to remove the overlap is to delete the file that's occupying the inode. So, if you suspect, or find out, that the guilty file is a critical system file that resides in one of the hidden system directories such as /etc /var /usr/ or visible system directories such as /System or /Library, and you don't want to reinstall the whole OS (which might not fix the overlapped extent allocation anyway), it's good to have another disk available to copy the files back to your original disk if necessary: a second bootable hard drive or a firewire drive connected to your Mac when you remove the misbehaving file. Just make sure that when you copy the file back to your boot disk that the permissions are correct, so it's best to use the "ditto" command, so that all sticky bits, flags, and permissions are preserved.
In case you didn't know, you don't have to boot from an install CD in order to check for overlapped extent allocations. All you need to do is restart your Mac, while holding down command + S to boot in "single-user mode."
At the command prompt that appears, type:
$ fsck -fy
If you have an overlapped extent allocation, you'll see:
"Overlapped Extent Allocation" (File 123456d)
No matter how many times you run fsck -fy, you'll never be rid of the error.
So, simply issue the following command:
find / -inum 123456 -print
Note the "d" was dropped, or any extra letter that appears after the inode number.
The find will return a file name that matches with the inode number, and the path to that file. If you remove the file then the fsck will not return this error next time you run it.
However, before you can delete the file(s) in single-user mode, you'll need to mount the file system. Type:
$ mount -uw /
When done, issue the "sync" command, and that will flush the write cache so that all pending writes are written from memory to the disk. Also, since most OS X 10.3 Macs use the HFS+ Journaled file system, it might be a good idea to disable the journal before booting into single-user mode by typing:
$ sudo diskutil disableJournal /
then re-enable it when done fixing the overlapped extents and rebooting normally:
$ sudo diskutil enableJournal /

If you own Disk Warrior then it should be able to repair a drive with overlapped extents.
There are two backup utilities included in Unix - psync and rsync. You will find them in the /usr/bin/ directory. For documentation simply enter: man psync or man rsync. In order to write data while in single-user mode you need to issue the command: /sbin/mount/ -uw / (Note: there is a "space" between the "uw" and the "/".) To mount an external drive you will need to provide the mountpoint for it in place of the "/", e.g., "/Volumes/volname") without the quotes.

• How do i repair my hard drive in single user mode when disk is full?

Hi there Apple Community!
I have an old Macbook Pro 17" with an upgraded 500GB harddrive and 4GB memory. I'm running Mac OSX Lion.
Was hoping you could help me out. THis is the situation:
Long story short I spilt wine on my macbook and the screen went a bit blobby. Switched it off for a few days, removed the battery etc. etc. Opened it up cleaned out as much of the wine as possible, but unfortunately some of it came in behind the LCD, so now the screen has a nice red stain. Obviously I'm not going to try to clean that out of the LCD.
My Macbook Pro still worked for a few days after that, but then my harddrive gave up. I booted in the Recovery HD menu, verified the drive and I got the error "Keys out of order - This disk needs to be repaired, click Repair Disk." I attempted to repair the disk but got the error "Keys out of order - Disk Full Error - The volume could not be repaired".
Unfortnately of this 500GB I only have about 7GB free on it, as I have a huge iPhoto and iTunes library. I did make a TIme Machine backup of my user directory, but not the system files. I don't really want to do a clean install because:
1) I'm paranoid that there's something I did not fully back up
2) I don't want to have to download the whole Mac OSX Lion again. I should have made a USB bootable backup when I had the chance. I don't have access to a broadband connection.
What I feel are my viable options, are as follows:
1) I did buy a replacement internal 500GB harddrive, so I can probably try to make an image of the hard drive to this new drive, but not sure how. I believe it's through the Disk Utility with the "New Image" option but not sure how to go from there.
2) Start up in Single User Mode and delete some unnecessary files and re-attempt to run the fschk -fy utility again (I tried this earlier and got the same Disk Full Error). - the problem with this is, I'm not familiar with the command line and have no clue how to delete files. I don't know my way around Unix.
3) I can also probably attempt to make a Ghost Image or Acronis Image of the failed drive to this new drive, but not sure if Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image will be able to read this HFS drive - I believe it's possible as it's a simple hard drive clone.
If you can guide me in the best option - probably there is a better solution than my proposed ones above, I appreciate any feedback and comments you might have!

hi Baltwo,
So I ended up copying my user folder to another harddrive. I managed to download the whole osx lion again, reinstalled, and recovered my home folder using this discussion:

I've done an Apple Software Update but it didn't find an update for iPhoto.
One thing to note is, this library was originally created on iLife 08, upgraded to '09 and it stayed on that version. It hasn't een upgraded to iLife '11. It worked fine on my previous install of OSX Lion. How do I recover the library without upgrading to '11 ?
