Pages refuses to open

So recently I downloaded the update for Pages '09, but now it doesn't open for me at all. When I try I just get an error that says "Pages cannot be opened because of a problem." It then goes on to suggest I reinstall and/or update Pages. The only problem is I can't figure out how to do either of those things when I'm not able to open the program. Going through the App Store it says that Pages is already installed and there doesn't appear to be an option to re-download it. Similarly when I click on software updates it says everything is up to date.
So I'm hoping someone can point me to some place where I can go to either re-download Pages '09 or at the very least a place where I can manually download the latest update. Thanks for your help.

This might be totally irrelevant, but I just bought a MBP, loaded with iWork. It wouldn't open and kept crashing. I did updates and still no joy. Eventually it was found to be a font issue and I was helped to resolve it by Yvan Koening here:

I hope this works for you.

  • Pages refuses to open files and export

I have become incredibly agitated as Pages will save a document then refuse to open it without any reason-does notr say it is corrupted, simply comes up with message '(doc name) cannot be opened. Also, when working on pages it has started to refuse to export docs into word and pdfs. Occassionally it will export one type and then refuse to do other, also without reason.
I activated IWork after the trial period ran out so I am confused as to how to reinstall it without it being on a disk, if I need to do so.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
When an application that was working correctly stops doing so the cause is likely corrupt preferences. There are a couple of ways to check this out. Log in as another user on your Mac & see if the behavior continues.
If you have a particular document you want to try to open in the other user, move it to the HD > Users > Shared folder. Unless permissions are set for other users to read & write you may get a message that a copy will be opened.
Quit Pages & then delete the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist from HD > Users > [your account] > Library > Preferences. Then restart Pages & see what happens. You will have to reset some Pages preferences.
If it were just one document, a trick I learned in the AppleWorks forum & has worked for some Pages users, is to save the document in iWork '05 format (use a different name) & then open it in Pages 2.
You can reinstall iWork from the restore DVD that came with your Mac. Just make sure you have your serial number written down to reenter it. Apple has written an article, Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac. Reinstalling, though, will not remove the preference files, so they will need to be moved manually as above. There is also one for Keynote in each user's Library as well as the com.apple.iWork06.plist in HD > Library > Preferences which contains the serial number. It is unlikely that this preference file is corrupt.

  • The new Pages refuses to open RTF files

I cannot open RTF files. Anything I get like that requires meto open it in Pages '09 to save to a .pages doc. Then I can get it open the new Pages. This needs to be fixed.

Support for importing & exporting RTF is just one of the many, many features that have been eliminated or changed. Leave feedback for the Pages team using the link in the Pages menu.

  • Pages won't update to 5.1, refuses to open documents

First of all, pardon me while I scream. AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!
iWork! I've stood by you all these years and this is what you do to me!!!!!
OK. So - Keynote and Numbers recently updated in late January, but not Pages. Today (18 February), I tried to open a Pages file and it won't open. The error message says that I need a newer version of Pages to open this document. I check and my version of Pages is 5.0. The app store says the latest version is 5.1 but it also tells me I have no updates available and I can't update or reinstall it because the button in the App Store just says "installed" for Pages.
    Can anyone help please??
First off, why does Pages refuse to update? And, how can a simple upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 immediately and automatically render my old documents UNOPENABLE? This is so ridiculous. I want to cry/scream because I'm wasting hours and hours now trying to open this one document.
    Please help? Thank you.

That is not a "button" that is the icon and it is for the older version of Pages.
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Pages 5.1: refuses to open documents, insisting needs update

Help! Over 200 page document, not to mention thousands of pages of work that I cannot access... is it locked down by some glitch?
Pages 5.0.1 has been on my macbook for a while now.  I'm not in love, but have adapted. Last night, admittedly after the most recent 10.9.1 update, it refuses to open my Pages created documents. Error message says, "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document"..."You can download the latest version of Pages from the Mac App Store."  The problem is, that when you follow the link, the app of course says "installed", and there is no waiting update. It's like a maniacal little cycle to drive me crazy.
I have tried the Command + I trick, and the control + click, but it will not open with an earlier version either. Yes, a restart was done. I'm on a 8GB macbook pro with miles of memory left, like 500GB out of 749 says the Storage info, graphics card, 2.2 GHz
As a possibly related (but not likely) for the past week or two I have been getting a message that kept prompting me to sign into an old appleID. I figured it was related to the update I was dragging my feet on. When I went to sync it all up, of course it made me change my other apple ID's and passwords. Grr.
I am a teacher, not a tech person...
I just want to open my docs... so any help (especially written in dunce) would really be appreciated.
The kids will thank you too.
    Feeling very frustrated.

I have 3 Macs .... all on OSX 10.9.2 and all upgraded to Pages 5.1 ... so it is reasonable to assume that I can create a document on one laptop ... save to the iCloud .... and open it on another laptop to work on later on.
    WRONG!
Like you - I get this message that I need the new version of Pages to open the document ...... but I am already on the latest one.
    It is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!
It defeats the purpose of having iCloud if I cannot access the document on any other laptop except for the one that created ti!
Forget about trying to work on it on the iPad. The alignments are all out and images don't download ........ it's a mess!!!!!!!!
Apple please fix this problem before you loose your once loyal users.

  • Pages won't open document

We are getting an increased number of users all with files that refuse to open in Pages 5, particularly Pages 5.1.
I have gone over several of them and been unable to correct the problem, only able to open the Document.iwa sub file in the package to look at the mix of text snippets and I presume .xml.
Apple reportedly has also examined these and been unable to rectify them.
To aid some kind of resolution I ask that users who have had the problem post here, detailing the last things they did with the file and whether there is anything particular to the files that may be leading to the problem.
Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.
Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?
Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?
Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?
Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?
Or anything else you can think of.
    Thank you,
    Peter

Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.
All documents were made and stored on iMac, early 2010, Mavericks OS 9.2; Pages 5.1; Numbers 3.1; some documents on  Snow Leopard, then Mountain Lion until November 2013 then Mavericks.
I often have to go to lengths which I don't understand to open Pages 5.1 since the iCloud trial.  I just stumble around and try stuff until I get in.
Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?
I tried iCloud hoping to have access from the Android smartphone, particularly contact information when away from the office.  It screwed everything up so bad immediately, especially Mac Mail Ver. 7.2 so that I couldn't receive mail, would hang up frequently, block the shut down process  and would need force quit.  Even force quit commonly would not work and I would have to pull the plug from the wall.  I have disabled iCloud the best I can, sacrificing any potential collaboration in favour of getting the Mac back.  My son-in-law has an up-to-date iPhone and I cannot receive mail from it.
Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?
I have DropBox installed but don't use it.  No synching of any type.
Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?
Most everybody that I work with used .docx and I can translate back and forth perfectly between Pages and Word. I don't use any other device or editor.
Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?
It is very common upon opening documents that have not been opened since Mavericks was installed - I don't remember the exact terminology - but  the effect of which means that 'this document was made in an older version of Pages. Do you wish to update it to Pages 5.1?'  I tried for a while to avoid 5.1, preferring 4.3, but have given up and do a lot of head-scratching but make Pages 5.1 do what I need.
I am very satisfied with my internal network and connections through FibreOp.
Thanks for your very great efforts Peter.  Forums can be critical and nasty; I prefer to be positive and complimentary when deserved.  You desrerve it.

  • Previously saved files refuse to open

Recently I have had 3 saved Pages files refuse to open because "the document does not have a valid format". Anyone else come across this and is there anything I can do to retrieve them?

This kind of thing is reported here quite often.
I wrote here many times that computers aren't perfect tools and that they may fail.
With pre-Lion systems, it's our duty to take care of our works.
Never save upon the file which we opened.
This is why I wrote an AutoSave script which save archived versions of works in progress every ten minutes.
With Lion, the system AutoSave by itself on the opened file. By default, Versions keep consecutive versions every hour which, from my point of view, isn't sufficient.
But, it would be a good idea to check if you have iWork '09 and iWork '08 installed on your machine.
Maybe, it's Pages '08 which try to open your files.

  • Aperture refuse to open the RAW files from my new Nikon D7100.

Aperture refuse to open the RAW files from my new Nikon D7100. What can I do? Thanks for help!

the raw support of new cameras will be made with a Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update not with a aperture update. But when the new RAW- Update will arrive is not sure.
And that usually can only be installed with newer Aperture versions. You cannot use the latest raw support with Aperture 3.2.4, unless you are able to update to Aperture 3.4. And earlier raw support versions cannot be used with Aperture 2.
See the footnotes on the Raw Support page  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html. That is why asked for the Aperture version.
** Requires Aperture 3 or later.
*** Requires Aperture 3.4 or later.

Trash the spyware (Chrome) and use Safari.
